EXPERTS have sent out a warning to Brits buying DIY botox kits online and injecting themselves with the drug.

Injecting the wrinkle smoothing jab can cause paralysis and blindness.

Figures show a rising number of Brits in the recession are using cheaper homekits, costing around £100 rather than spending £250-£300 for surgery treatment.

Buyers learn how to inject themselves using crude injection sheets or by following videos posted online.

Gwen Davies of the Clinic group Transform, based in Manchester said: “Buying botox off the internet is very dangerous, bypassing the procedures which are in place to protect the public.”

In the UK, Botox is a prescription-only drug but can be bought from internet sites, mainly in Russia and the Far East.

Poor Nancy, what is she to do? Could she have known? The Plastic Surgery Surtax is one that has slipped through the cracks. First floated this summer, the tax would impose a 10% surcharge on all plastic surgery, an industry that has little to do with health insurance in the first place.

Say it isn’t so– you promised me!!

As neurotoxin science continues to advance and more drugs become available, patients will be offered more choices of treatments.  Currently Botox (Allergan) and Dysport (Medicis) are the only FDA approved neurotoxins (also called neuromodulators) to treat facial lines and wrinkles.  Numerous other similar drugs are currently in the pipeline for FDA approval, including products from China and Germany.  Patients outside the USA have more options and US patients will soon have some of these options.  More options are not necessarily better options as Botox and Dysport have long track records of safety and efficacy, but these new products will more than likely also offer safety and effectiveness and may also be more cost effective for patients.

All neurotoxins will be compared to Botox in terms of safety, efficacy, time of onset and duration of the effects.  As with any new product competitor on the market, positive and negative rumors will abound that can assist or detract from the new product.  Finally, all new products will settle in to their niche based solely on their effect and not conjecture.

Dysport has big shoes to fill in taking on Allergan’s previous monopoly of Botox.  Dysport has an excellent track record in Europe where it has been an option for a decade.  Like any new drug, doctors must figure out “the right way to use it”.  More than ever before, drug companies are strapped in getting the word out by Big Pharma regulations.  Although regulation is necessary, drug companies are literally hamstrung and sometimes voiceless.  Dysport would love to tell doctors the “best way” to use the new drug, but simply are not allowed, so it rests in rumor and conjecture as the means of determining “best practices”.

The biggest question of doctors new to Dysport is “how does the Dysport dosage relate to Botox dosage.  Being a consultant for both companies, I am asked this question frequently in my teaching travels around the US.  Initially, doctors were saying that “one Botox unit should equal 2.5 Dysport units”.  Although not an official comparison, this suggested that in order to have an equal effect, a patient that would normally have 20 units of Botox to treat their frown lines would require 50 units of Dysport to appreciate the same effect.  Comparison of units are not “apples to apples” official pharmicopia, but rather convenient conversions to anecdotally arrive at a standard between the two drugs.  Unfortunately, I believe that this first round of “units to units” comparison gave Dysport the short end of the stick.  Here is the reason.  When a new drug is introduced that competes with a standing giant, patients will try it (or not try it) based on numerous factors.  These selection factors include the advice of the treating doctor, cost factors, rumored advantages, the “newness” factor and the possibility that the new drug will simply work different or better.  Herein lies the catch.  If a patient has been getting successful Botox treatments with 20 units to their frown lines and wants to try the new Dysport and their doctor gives the rumored 2.5:1 ratio (50 units of Dysport), the patient is going to be a hard line test of which one works best.  In my experience, the 2.5 conversion is not enough Dysport to produce the effect of 20 Botox units.  If so, the patient will have a less profound or shorter acting effect and Dysport will be “dissed”.  My experience (and that of other surgeons) of using 3 Dysport units for 1 Botox unit seems to be a more accurate dosage in the quest for equipotent treatment between the two drugs.  If doctors are truly interested comparing these two drugs, they must use an equipotent dosage, which I believe to be 3 Dysport units for each Botox units or 60 units of Dysport for an area usually treated with 20 units of Botox.  Failure to use this ratio may give patients a false comparison of the effects and longevity of Dysport. 

Why is all of this important?  Personally, I feel that Allergan and Medicis are both great companies and I use fillers and neurotoxins from both of them.  From a doctor standpoint, you have to offer all contemporary options to your patients and from a consumer standpoint, every Coke needs a Pepsi.  What is important is that when comparing on new product to another, it is done in a fair way for the surgeon and patient to accurately evaluate.  Having said this, I believe the fair and balanced (hey, does that sound familiar?) way to this is to inject 3 Dysport units for where you would use 1 Botox unit.  Then the surgeon and patient can fairly evaluate the drugs.  It is unfair for the company and patients to compare with a lesser amount.  You will never find an official chart that says use 3:1 and Medicis is not allowed to even think that out loud, so it is up to the experience of scientifically minded clinicians to fairly sort this out for everyone else.  I am trying to do my part and I think it is 3:1 ad nauseum. To prepare Dysport for this dilution, 3 cc of preserved saline is added to the 300 unit Dysport vial.  Five one half cc syringes are drawn up and each will contain 60 units.

The remaining sleepiness in my head was shaken when I faced the mirror Saturday morning.

I have eye bags and there are some wrinkles around them too.

For the first times in many years I feel my mortality became a threat. I felt I was getting old and it’s beginning to show on my face.

I have been going to bed late the past week and getting up early in the morning. My body’s requirement for sufficient hours of sleep was not being met and the results were beginning to show.

I know I’m not getting any younger and the inevitable reality of aging seems to threaten me for the first time.

When I was a young kid, I was impatient with myself. I wanted to grow up fast so I could do what adults were doing. One of them was staying up as late as I pleased and as my body would allow me to do.

I did that in my early 20s.

In fact, I once stayed up for 72 hours, literally not a bit of sleep. I fuelled my self-induced insomnia with instant coffee and cigarettes.

I was writing with a friend a collection of poems that we were going to enter in an annual literary competition in the Philippines.

Part of what we were writing was about insomnia itself.

So, we thought what better way to find the imagery, symbolism and cadence of phrases but by walking into the realm of such experience.

After three days with no sleep, my body gave up and I went to sleep for the next two days with no interruption.

I’m in my late 30s and nearing 40. I’m no longer capable doing what I used to in terms of being a night owl.

My body begins to show the repercussions of the abuse it has endured over the years.

My vision is no longer 20-20 all the time.

There are times that I could barely see images ten feet away from where I’m standing.

I know there’s a solution for that. 

Seriously, though. I’m just saying.

A St. Louis resident experienced partial respiratory paralysis after receiving an overdose of Botox at the St. Louis University Hospital recently. He was being treated for muscle spasticity, and Botox was being used for one of its off-label purposes in this particular case.

The patient Richard Hart suffers from a medical condition that affects his neck, and reportedly received 300 units of Botox on August 20, 2007, 200 units on September 20, 2007 and 400 units on October 5, 2007. By the middle of October that same year, Hart reported breathing problems and difficulty swallowing. The effects continued, and resulted in blurred vision, muscle weakness and the partial paralysis of his respiratory muscles.

The lawsuit alleges that the doctor who administered the drug was negligent and did not accurately monitor Hart’s Botox doses. If the doctor had maintained the recommended dosage schedule, Richard Hart may not have experienced any of the side effects or had to deal with the eventual partial failure of his respiratory system.

Mr. Hart’s case is being represented by the Lowe Law Firm based in St. Louis, a firm that handles a variety of personal injury, medical malpractice, product liability and commercial cases throughout the United States. According to Jeff Lowe, one of the attorneys representing Dr. Hart, “Botulism is one of the most toxic substances known to man. My client suffers from botulism poisoning, a painful and terminal illness.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already taken a stand on the potential risks and dangers of Botox, requiring that a warning is added to the packaging of all botulinum toxin products. The FDA requires that the Botox warning label explains that toxins can spread from the injection site to other areas of the body, and that they may also be the cause of many symptoms associated with botulism.

Will the Dems tax plastic surgery to pay for healthcare?   It’s unAmerican!

A ideia que fazemos de alguma coisa sem retoque é que não está burilado,  as arestas não foram aparadas, falta lapidar. A ideia é essa mesmo. Mas como assim uma mulher sem retoque? Significa que não usa botox? Não fez  plástica? Não lipoaspirou? Mais ou menos, porque nada, nem ninguém, nos dias de hoje, é totalmente sem retoque. Uma tinta no cabelo, um aparelho para corrigir os dentes, uma dietazinha de vez em quando, um corte novo, um jeito de vestir… uns mais, outros menos, a verdade é que estamos sempre nos retocando de alguma forma. Mas acredito piamente que existe um lado nosso, essencial, por trás de todos esses adereços da modernidade.  Esse nosso lado “secreto” se revela vez por outra, quando a máscara cai. Um momento de indecisão, um falar mais alto, um sentar diferente, um olhar mais ou menos intenso, uma entonação mais ou menos enfática na voz. Vivemos nos traindo e nos punindo (às vezes de forma inconsciente) por essas derrapadas da identidade reflexivamente construída diariamente. Ninguém quer aparecer mal na fita não é? Dessas inquietações e da busca por uma essência, sem que ela jamais, em tempo algum, seja pura, é que nasce o Mulher Sem Retoque. A ideia é publicar aqui crônicas, micro-contos e outras filosofias femininas o mais cruas e sem lapidar possível (permitam-me uma edição cuidadosa e um certo zelo com a língua). Do jeito que as mulheres se apresentarem à mim, na rua, no ônibus, no consultório médico, na minha cabeça, elas saltarão aqui para estas páginas virtuais com suas histórias. Ficção e realidade vão mesmo se confundir e pretendo nunca revelar o que é uma coisa ou outra, senão perde a graça e deixa de ser expontâneo. Aos corajosos que pretendem se aventurar, boa leitura!

In looking for a way to pay for their healthcare plan, the US Senate has proposed a 5% tax on all cosmetic surgery. They’re calling it Botax. Catchy, eh? It’s projected to raise $6 billion.

Frente a otras técnicas quirúrgicas, este tratamiento ofrece “una clara ventaja” ya que “su aplicación es fácil, nada agresiva y los efectos sólo duran 6 meses”. Además, añadió esta experta, “las contraindicaciones son mínimas” y se producen básicamente en aquellos pacientes que tienen alteraciones en la conducción nerviosa o alteraciones musculares como las miotonías.

Para los pacientes que tienen que repetir las infiltraciones, la doctora Mir advirtió de que la aplicación es “muy cómoda” y se hace en 20 minutos en la propia consulta. Aunque “puede parecer engorroso” volver cada seis meses a realizar las infiltraciones, señaló, “si se tiene en cuenta que hay pacientes, por ejemplo, con distonía laríngea que prácticamente no pueden hablar y que gracias a una infiltración cada seis meses pasan a hablar de forma normal, es evidente que el beneficio es enorme”.

When Nancy Pelosi heard about this, she almost blinked.

The bill levies a 5 percent tax on elective cosmetic surgery. The provision raises $5 billion and was needed to make the numbers work, according to a Democratic Senate aide.

The Finance Committee considered the tax but dismissed it, in part because it was a public relations battle that senators were not willing to wage.

Pana la urma nu timpul ne da durata. 24 de ore trec insensibile. Ce face ziua sa dureze este un timp facut sensibil. Poti sa observi cum trece o zi, sau poti sa simti cat dureaza o zi. Diferenta e ca de la cer la pamant. Ca de la punga de botox la gura cruda.
