I recently took my first trip to Napa Valley, CA and I have to say…I am officially hooked. Besides the fact that I was traveling with a great group of people, it was as if the stars had all aligned to ensure a perfect weekend. The weather was picturesque and although I was only there for four days, two of which were spent in San Francisco, it was plenty of time to fall in love with the beautiful foliage, fantastic food and incredible wine. If you haven’t visited Napa (or San Fran) yet and are curious about where to go and what to do, then pack your bags, get on the next thing smoking and take this guide with you!

Wine, Wine and More Wine

Pine Ridge – Get your palette (and your wallet) ready for Fortis, their trademark Bordeaux blend. At $140 a bottle, you’ll want to savor every bit of its rich notes of currant, cherry and raspberry. Feel free to do so while sitting beneath their mysteriously romantic wine caves, set 130 ft below the vines and beautifully accented by the artwork of Dale Chihuly.

Grgich Hills Estate – The owner of this certified biodynamic winery, feisty 86 year old Mike Grgich, came all the way from Croatia with only a few dollars and a suitcase. Periodically he shows up to the winery to say hello and sign a few wine bottles. Look for a movie on his fascinating story to come out in the near future.

Lunch Fit for a Queen

Cuvee – They make a pinot noir sorbet that is to die for!

Brix – Love the lamb and argula pizza and the view of their very own organic produce growing outside

Lark Creek Steak (San Francisco) – I particularly enjoyed my pumpkin soup, savory and sweet.

Go for the View

Auberge du Soleil – Although the food and wine was good, when you see the view you won’t care what the food or wine tastes like!

Yountville, CA – Quaint little town center near Napa with great boutique shopping and lots of great restaurants.

Dinner for a True Foodie

Bottega – The braised short ribs fell off the bone, the beat salad was delectable and the service was impeccable. If you watch The Food Network then you’ll be excited to hear that this is Michael Chiarello’s restaurant.

The Slanted Door (San Francisco, CA) – Great place to “see and be seen” while at the same time partaking of a delicious meal. My personal favs were the yellow tail from the raw bar, and the vegetarian spring rolls. Trust me, you’ve never had a spring roll like this before!

Café Claude (San Francisco, CA) – Fantastic live music on Thursday night was the perfect backdrop to this fantastic French find nestled in an alleyway. Tasty beat salad and a yummy vegetarian Lasagne.

Mike and I took my sister and her husband to Napa for a weekend before they moved from the Bay Area to Hawaii. We decided we would dine at Bottega, Michael Chiarello’s newest creation. On the night we arrived he was actually in the house. While waiting for our table he walked through the bar and mingled with guests. As he was making his way back to the kitchen he made a comment to my sister and brother-in-law. The waiting area is small and the place was packed so my sister was sitting on her husband’s lap. Chef Chiarello said something like  “You guys look comfortable… I’m gonna bring you a menu, actually maybe just dessert.”  (at lease that’s what I think I heard — it was noisy so I could be a little off but that was the jist).

Soon after we were seated at a large round table in the side dining area. We started our meal with a raw fish appetizer and fresh mozzarella. For mains, I chose the seafood stew, Mike had the Quail and my sister and hubby shared a giant porterhouse steak and fries. For dessert we had a yummy cookie plate and a tart. The food and service was very good definitely worthy of a Top Chef Master but we didn’t expect anything less. For years Mike & I have been fans of the NapaStyle empire Chiarello created. If you haven’t heard about his wine club check it out. We have been members for over 2 years and we love it.

Before we knew Frank Stitt owned it, we found Bottega Cafe and Dining Room. It’s beautiful Itanian style building on the hill above 5 Points area. The Cafe is on the right and the Dining Room on the left.

We’ve only eaten at the Cafe. It’s very casual. College student casual if you know college students with good taste and a Mom’s AmEx.

Wood oven pizzas, warm sandwiches, entrees such roast trout and grilled chicken paillard. Very nice salads. You can also make a meal out of some of their snacks–but that would be an expensive way to go.

La mostra, oltre a ricostruire la vicenda attributiva e collezionistica di questa pregevole tela, analizzerà il ruolo che veniva attribuito alle copie dagli artisti e dai collezionisti di un tempo, attraverso l’esposizione di due quadri del tardo Seicento, che riproducono due opere perdute di Annibale Carracci. Fashionista now connotes a common cliche, eruding the true essence of simply looking fabulous and glamorous.To be one must feel one.It is beyond dressing and styling…its a way of life.To be a fashionist, one must have a high knowledge of the accessories of the gods and goddesses.The likes of Louis Vuitton, its messenger’s bags, trunks and wallets, the Balenciagas,the Hermes’and the Fendis.

A fashionist must have a fashion bible where ever she goes- the Vogue.He or she must understand by heart fashion verses and correctly name names fashion gurus and disciples..it’s a fashionist mantra to recognize and accept the high priestess of fashion, Miss Anna Wintour…!

He or she must have a penchant for shopping and must update their sense of style in wardrobes,make-ups,shoes and bags.
A fashionist reads the fashion and lifestyle column first before any current events and issues.

Now isn’t it eccentric? or mind blowing?…. do you know anybody who fits to a “t”?…whose obssesiveness reaches bounderies and limits,whose basic existence is being enslave by such outrageous show of materialistic rape of “good things in life are free” verses?..then we say..wake up!!! and get a life!!! for fashion sake!..duh!

The final week of round one.  Tonight’s list of competitors is no less extraordinary than the first five.  Roy Yamaguchi (Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion® Cuisine, Nationwide), Michael Cimarusti (Providence Restaurant, LA), Art Smith (O, the Oprah Magazine), and Jonathan Waxman (Barbuto, NYC) are all competing for the final spot tonight.

Quickfire: Aisle Trial
The chefs are assigned a different aisle that they can shop from at Whole Foods.  The judges were Whole Foods employees.  They did not appear to be very knowledgeable about food though, odd.

Waxman 3.5 stars, Yamaguchi 4 stars, Smith 4.5 stars and Cimarusti took the early lead with 5 stars.

Elimination Challenge:  More Mystery Box
The chefs draw each other’s names and must create a mystery box for that chef to prepare a meal with.  Each contestant then prepares a dish using ingredients from the box. In other words it is a rip-off of Food Network’s Chopped which most people recognize as a rip-off of Top Chef’s Aisle Trial. So this challenge has come full circle.  Wow, this challenge is tailor made for Debbie on NFNS 5.  No doubt she’d pack her box with marbles and cyanide.

Final scores:
Yamaguchi 15 stars, Cimarusti 17.5 stars, Waxman 20 stars, Smith wins with 22 stars.

Art Smith will join Hubert Keller, Suzanne Tracht, Rick Bayless, Anita Lo and Michael Chiarello in the champion’s round which begins July 29 on Bravo.

The next-to-last preliminary round.  Tonight’s chefs include Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson (Frasca Food & Wine, Boulder, CO), Nils Norén (Vice President of Culinary Arts at The FCI, New York City),  Rick Moonen (RM Seafood, Las Vegas), and Michael Chiarello (Bottega, Yountville, CA).  Of the group Chiarello is the best known because of his three-time Emmy winning TV series Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello.

Quickfire: Junk Food
The chefs must recreate a classic junk food as a fine dining dish.  Chiarello was the first to chose so he took fish sticks and tarter sauce, next was Lachlan who chose the hot dog, then Moonen with corn dogs and finally Norén went with fried shrimp.

Lachlan 3 stars, Moonen (did not finish his dish) 0 stars, Norén  3 stars,  took it with Chiarello 4.5 stars.

Elimination Challenge: Mini 3 Course Meal
The chefs must prepare 100 three course meals by themselves.  Not meals so much as samplers – the mission is to prepare 3 hors d’oeuvres based on an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert.

Final score Lachlan 15.5, Moonen (what a come back!) 17 stars, Norén 17 stars, Chiarello 19.5.
