Qualified therapist, Donna Hammett, has offered her services freely to assist Lincoln with his recovery.

Lincoln has been demonstrating intense nervousness and discomfort whenever anyone tried to touch his back, but by the end of his treatment today he had yawned nine times in relaxation. And he wasn’t the only one. The treatment was so relaxing that both Lincoln’s foster carers were yawning and the horses in the yard next door went to sleep too!

Donna used her experience to proceed gently and professionally with Lincoln, assisting him to gain confidence and trust in humans once more.

Donna also treats humans and other animals and is located in Yarraman in south-east Queensland.

Thanks Donna. You’re an angel!

Amy was the daughter of Miles Leroy Hineman and Elizabeth Ann Rowan.

She was born 30 Jun 1896, in Tomah, Wisconsin. She married Earl Benjamin Scott and moved to Eau Claire Co., Wisconsin. Earl was born 16 May 1891 and lived in Augusta.

-From the Tomah Journal, 02 Oct 1914

A quiet wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Hineman of the town of Tomah on Thursday, Sept. 24th, when their youngest daughter Amy was united in marriage to Mr. Earl Scott of Augusta. The ceremony was performed at noon by Rev. Jonathan G. Smith of the Congregational church. Only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties were present. A wedding dinner was served and the newly wedded couple took the afternoon train for La Crosse. They intended to go from there to Milwaukee but were called back next day by the death of a nephew of the bride. They left Tuesday for Augusta where they will make their home, Mr. Scott being engaged in the moving picture business there. We join with the bride’s many friends in wishing them happiness and prosperity.

NOTE: The nephew mentioned was Virgil Frederick Hineman, son of Ralph W. Hineman, Amy’s brother. He died from TB, as did the wife (Bessie Martin, died Aug 1914) of Amy’s oldest brother, Gardie.

AUGUSTA : Robert Scott, 86, of E19110 County Road N, Augusta, passed away at his home Wednesday morning, May 30, 2007.

Robert Miles Scott, son of Earl and Amy (Hineman) Scott, was born January 16, 1921, in Scott?s Valley, rural Augusta. At the age of 2, he moved into the city of Augusta, where he attended grade school and graduated from Augusta High School. He was united in marriage to Loradean “Eny” Harke on February 7, 1940, in Cresco, Iowa. The couple lived all their married life in Augusta. During WW II, Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre, stationed mainly in China. Bob had been employed in Eau Claire by Dolly Madison Dairies and Gillette Tire Company before taking a job with Northern States Power Company in 1950. During his 32 years of employment with NSP, he worked as a ground man, lineman and eventually as the district manager in the Augusta office. Since February of 2006, he had enjoyed making his home with his son and daughter-in-law in Ludington Township, rural Augusta.

Bob took pride in his community, and throughout his life volunteered his time for the betterment of Augusta. For many years he had been a member of the Augusta-Bridge Creek Fire Dept., where he had served as secretary-treasurer. In the 1960s, during the construction years of the elementary school, he had served on the Augusta School Board. He also served on the Augusta Nursing Home Building Committee and eventually on the Nursing Home Board. Since 1950, he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta, where he served in various capacities. He served on the Augusta Cemetery Board, and was an active member and officer with the Augusta Lions Club, American Legion, and past commander of the Augusta VFW Post. He was a member of the Eau Claire County Conservation League, and during this time was instrumental in establishing the Eau Claire County Public Hunting Grounds and Coon Fork Lake. While working for NSP, he became a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, and in 1970 was awarded the Citizen of the Year for NSP.

Bob enjoyed the time he spent coaching girls softball teams and being involved with his children and grandchildren?s activities. He was an avid deer hunter, and looked forward to the annual family hunts. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, pool and bowling.

He is survived by his son, William and Kathryn Scott; daughter-in-law, Lynda Scott; brother, Allen and Elaine Scott; and sister, Rose and Don Grams, all of Augusta; four grandchildren, Jon Scott, Michelle (Don) Wade, all of Kenosha, David (Lisa) Scott of Omro and Richard (Kristine) Scott of Sherwood; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eny, on October 26, 1990; son, Larry Scott, on December 9, 2003; and siblings, Elizabeth Campbell, June Cain, Kathryn Hanson, Richard Scott and infant brother, John Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Augusta VFW and American Legion, will be held in the East Lawn Cemetery, Augusta.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Augusta VFW Post, Augusta Lions Club or Augusta Cemetery Association.

I would love to hear from any descendants of Earl Scott and Amy Hineman, and am hoping they might be able to provide more information and/or pictures, especially of the Hineman family. Amy’s brother Gardie, was my great-grandfather, and I don’t have any pictures of him or his first wife, Olive Bessie Martin.

Amy had a sister, Pearl, who lived in Augusta as well. Pearl was married to Ralph W. Bowen, and from what I can tell, they never had any children of their own. However, according to one census record, my grandfather, Nathan Hineman was living with them shortly after his mother died from TB.

Any info would be appreciated!

Andrea Bowen could not look anymore gorgeous in her NO H8 campaign picture. The 19-year-old Desperate Housewives actress joined the likes of Kathy Griffin and Brooke Sher in support of the movement. The NO H8 Campaign started with portraits of everyday Californians who were shocked to hear the passing of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in California. If you would like to participate in the NO H8 campaign make sure to check out their website for their next event!

Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company is committed to manufacturing its furniture in a responsible and environmentally friendly manner. Through its “One for One” program, Vaughan-Bassett has contributed 150,000 tree seedlings in 2007 to the Virginia Department of Forestry.

The planting of these 150,000 maple, oak, ash, pine, poplar and applewood trees allows the replacement of every tree used in the production of the company’s bedroom and dining room suites. It covers the trees used in all domestic production (96 percent of our total) and the 4 percent that is imported. Carl E. Garrison III, a Virginia state forester, writes: “Your idea to plant one new tree in Virginia for every tree you harvest each year is sustainability at its best.”

Vaughan-Bassett has also installed $2 million state-of-the-art rough end systems in each of its two factories. These computerized rough end systems have increased the lumber yield by over 20 percent, thereby significantly reducing the number of trees needed to produce furniture.

Vaughan-Bassett is a leader in the “Buy Local” movement. Over 99 percent of its lumber comes from within 500 miles of its factories – 80 percent from within 200 miles, reducing the carbon footprint associated with the transport of primary raw material.

Vaughan-Bassett is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and is committed to a program of continuous improvement of its systems, striving to be an industry leader in producing environmentally responsible bedroom and dining room furniture.

In recent years, we’ve heard a lot of talk about increasing college access for working-class student

In recent years, we’ve heard a lot of talk about increasing college access for working-class students. As I have noted before, access is just the starting point. A new study by William G. Bowen, Matthew M. Chingos, and Michael S. McPherson, Crossing the Finish Line: Completing College at America’s Public Universities, finds that while lower-income students may be entering college, they are less likely to graduate than their wealthier counterparts. (It’s worth noting here that their data focuses almost exclusively on income rather than other aspects of class.) At flagship universities, only 68% of lower-income students graduate in 6 years, compared with 83% of higher-income students. Across state systems, the numbers are even worse (for both groups): 55% of lower-income students finish in 6 years, while 74% of higher-income students graduate in that time.

Bowen, Chingos, and McPherson identify two primary causes for this disparity. The first, money, seems obvious. Especially these days, as workers lose jobs amid the economic crisis, working-class students and their families are more vulnerable to tuition increases as well as other rising college costs, such as books, transportation, and housing. As states defund higher education, many colleges have responded by raising tuition and other fees, and we shouldn’t be at all surprised that some working-class students drop out, at least for a while. Working-class families tend to have less wealth to help them get through a tough economic period, so often students’ only option when faced with either lost family income or increased college costs is to drop out of school.

But the other reason offered in Crossing the Finish Line is more surprising: the authors suggest that lower-income students often “undermatch” in their college choices. That is, they tend to enroll in less-selective institutions than they could. Students with family incomes in the lowest quartile and/or whose parents did not attend college are the most likely to choose a less-selective and the authors therefore surmise less demanding college than their test scores and high school grades suggest they could. While this choice seems to puzzle the authors, it actually makes perfect sense to me.

Many working-class families have limited knowledge about the landscape of higher education, so they may not recognize the differences among types of institutions. Working-class students may also choose less-selective schools because they are closer to home, less expensive, or offer aid packages that cover more of the cost of attending school. For others, undermatching may reflect self-doubt about whether they will succeed in college. Working-class students often have less confidence in their academic abilities than more well-off students have.

As someone who has taught at an open-enrollment university – exactly the kind of place that Bowen, Chingos, and McPherson would see as an “undermatch” for a bright working-class student – I have long believed that less prestigious campuses with many working-class students serve those students well because we are likely to provide a friendlier atmosphere, better support, and stronger faculty commitment to teaching working-class students. In some cases, such schools also provide more financial aid, and a scholarship at a lower-cost institution can go much further toward covering the cost of college.

Certainly, the experiences of working-class students on elite private or more-selective flagship campuses would support this notion. As Bobby Allyn notes in an essay on his experience as a working-class student at American University, such elite settings can be alienating. He advocates creating “spaces where like-minded students from comparable socioeconomic backgrounds can come together and foster a community,” exactly what the Working Class Student Union is doing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

So I was puzzled by the claim that undermatching could undermine students’ academic success. One reason might be that academic challenge yields better performance. A Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching study of student learning at community colleges advocates for asking more of our students rather than less. Faculty who teach working-class students are often tempted to make their courses a little easier than they would at a more elite school. After all, we know that many of our students come from high schools that didn’t offer strong college prep programs. Many are also working long hours to pay for school, or commuting long distances to avoid the cost of campus housing. We’re also concerned about the challenges that single parents face in juggling school, work, and family. Because we want to help students succeed, we ask a little less. This study suggests that we may be cheating them.

While feeling like an outsider creates emotional and social obstacles for working-class students, it might also work as an academic motivator. Such students want to prove that they do belong among their more elite peers, so they may work harder just to “show them,” while on a more working-class campus, they fit in and may feel less of a need to demonstrate their full abilities. Indeed, working-class schools may even encourage this, as strong networks of support services to help students get through college can communicate, inadvertently, that the goal is to get through, not to excel. Because middle-class culture emphasizes individual success and competition, more elite campuses may, in contrast, create a stronger atmosphere of achievement.

Another key difference in the educational experiences of working-class students who attend more selective schools and those who undermatch is geographical. Attending a selective school is, in many cases, more likely to involve moving away from home. Allyn’s experience is typical, as he went first from Pennsylvania to Ithaca, New York, and later to Washington, DC. Why would leaving home help? After all, going away to school usually means leaving behind a family support system. On the other hand, that very support system can leave working-class students feeling torn between the competing demands of school, which is an essentially individual pursuit, and family, which reflects the greater commitment to the communal that is often part of working-class culture. When students live near home, the pull of family commitments can often interfere with their school work. As one of my students explained a few years ago, she had to miss classes for two weeks because her sister was having surgery and she had to look after her young nieces and nephews. It may well be that families are less likely to make demands on working-class students, and students may be less likely to respond to family needs, if they’re living on a campus more than a few hours’ drive away.

While all of this may explain why working-class students are more likely to graduate if they attend a more selective college, it doesn’t solve the problem. The real challenge posed by this study is to less selective, more working-class institutions: how can we do a better job of helping students succeed? Stay tuned. I’ll take up that question next time.

Last Saturday we hosted an in-store tasting of 3 South African wines picked by our wine guy, Paul Rickett and included Moreson Blancs de Blancs brut, Graham Beck Gamekeeper’s Reserve Chenin Blanc, and Glen Carlou Grande Classique Cabernet Merlot. All the wines were delicious but the star of the show for most was the Graham Beck Chenin. Delightfully crisp, it was a great wine to match with Thanksgiving dinner. We’re going to try and get some more in but this wine was imported into BC as a one-off and may not be available any more.

Next in-store tasting will be in November and will feature wines from Bleasdale Winery in Australia. This has been owned by the Potts family for 5 generations.

——————————————-

Gardie is my direct line:

Gardie Hineman married Olive Bessie Martin 05 Nov 1910 in Minot, Ward Co., ND. They had one son, Nathan Hineman, born 15 Aug 1912 in Monroe Co., WI. Bessie died in 1914 from TB, leaving Nathan and another young son, Ladoit “Dick” Houston, from a previous marriage.

Gardie next married Frances Adams (Adamski,) 28 Dec 1916 in Minot, Ward Co., ND. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska sometime before 1920.

—————————————–

Ralph W. Hineman married Emma B Pingel on 11 May 1904, in Wilton, Monroe, Wisconsin. They had 8 children: Leslie, Gerald, Virgil, Laura, Avery, Gertrude and Wesley. They also moved to Omaha, Nebraska, sometime in the 1920’s.

—————————————–

Pearl Hineman married Ralph W. Bowen on 05 Nov 1905 in Monroe Co., WI. They had no children. Gardie’s son, Nathan, evidently lived with them for an unknown period of time around 1920, as he appears on the census with them, and I found a mention of him in an Eau Claire Co., WI newspaper, which is where Pearl and Ralph were living at the time. I think Pearl and Ralph may have lived in the Chicago, IL area around 1910, but then returned to the Augusta area.

——————————————

Ruby L. Hineman married William Ernst Gerke on 28 Nov 1909 in Wisconsin. They had 7 children: Harold, Raymond, Miles, Pearl, Allen, Howard and Maxine. They stayed in Wisconsin.

——————————————-

Amy Louise Hineman married Earl Benjaman Scott about 1914, probably in WI. Amy and Earl had 8 children: Elizabeth, June, Allen, Robert, Katherine, Rose, Richard and John. They lived in the Augusta, Eau Claire Co., WI area.

——————————————-

Glen Wellyn Hineman married Florence Caroline Mackey about 1924. They had 2 sons, Earl Raymond, born in Wisconsin, and James Miles, born in Minnesota. It appears they were divorced, as Glen was living in North Dakota in 1930, and later, ended up in Blaine, Montana, while Florence was still in Minnesota, living with her parents in 1930.

———————————–

This is just an outline of the Miles Leroy Hineman family. I will be posting more information on the various children and related families in separate posts.

If you are related to any of these people, or think there might be some connection, feel free to leave me a comment; I would love to hear from you.

What makes a person change their name and does changing ones name also change their identity? Name c

What makes a person change their name and does changing ones name also change their identity? Name changing is a lot more common than you think and when you really think about it and it is not only just the actors and musicians we commonly associate it with.

Some of the more famous singers that have changed their names include Elton John who was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight and Freddy Mercury was born Farookh Bulsara.

Did you know that Jason Patric was born Jason Miller and Bruce Willis came into this world as Walter Willison?

So for many different reasons we find that entertainers change their names and in the case of Freddy Mercury you can understand it but why would Jason Patric change from Jason Miller. Perhaps he didn’t have a connection with the Miller name and took on his mothers maiden name. Who knows? But you know what? It doesn’t matter why. So long as someone wants to change their name that is their choice and is often a deeply personal reason of which I can understand.

But it isn’t just entertainers who have changed their names. Do you know who William Jefferson Blythe was? He was the 42nd President of the United States. Yep, Bill Clinton was not born Bill Clinton. His biological father died when young William was still 3 months from gracing our planet and he eventually took his Step-Fathers name. That is ok and is quite noble and is a great way to honour the person who helped raise you even though that person is not blood related.

And Bill Clinton is not the only President to change his name. Even Gerald Ford opted for a new name as well. He was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. Gerald Ford is a massive deviation away from his birth name and I am sure he had good reason to change it.

A couple of other quick examples from http://www.famousnamechanges.net/:

David Copperfield was born David Kotkin.
Rodney Dangerfield was born Jasob Cohen
Harry Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss
Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz

So if all of these people can change their name and have it accepted by all, then why can’t I? Well I’m here to tell you, I can and I did and I am very pleased that I made the decision. A decision which had been stirring in my mind for many years but was given serious though only a few short years ago.

Below is an excerpt of the info that I have provided to friends and family as to why I changed my name. I wrote this, not seeking approval, but so I didn’t have to repeat myself over and over but to also give my name change a little credibility. I think it did that.

Jack McClane – The Name Change

I have officially changed my name. I want to explain the reasons surrounding this very important decision:

1. So I don’t have to explain the reasons why over and over again.

2. To debunk any rumours that I am hiding from the mob and am going into witness protection!

3. That I am not changing my name so I turn into perhaps the greatest action hero of all time.

At the end of the day I don’t care what anyone thinks as it is a deeply personal reason and some of you who are reading this will scoff at the thought of it, and that is ok because it won’t affect me at all, I am doing if for me and I am thankful that my wife and my daughters support this decision by all changing their surnames.

So I am changing my full name from James Warren Smith to Jack Bowen McClane. I’ll explain the relevance of each name starting with ‘Jack’.

Jack – Since birth I have been called Jamie and I have never really liked James. Jamie to me is a young boys name and not a man’s name. James is too formal and for those of you who know me really well you will know I am far from being a formal kind of guy. So where did ‘Jack’ come from? Back in the early 90’s, I think around 1992 or 1993 I was sitting around having a discussion with some work colleagues and somehow the conversation got onto names. I mentioned that I hate ‘Jamie’ and they said if I had a choice of name what would I like to be called, to which I replied, ‘Jack’. It stuck. Soon after a lot of my friends and colleagues started calling me Jack and this still occurs to this day. I like the name. It is a strong name and one I think suits me.

Bowen – Ah the place I feel most at home. Most of you don’t know but I lived in this tiny North Queensland, Australia town from age 10 to 12. I love it. Whenever I get up there I always feel as though I am home and it is the place I intend on retiring to. Bowen is approx 2 hours drive south of Townsville and only about an hour or so north from the Whitsunday Islands. It is a magnificent spot with warm winters and wonderful people. You may have heard that the Baz Luhrmann movie “Australia” was partially shot there. I did consider changing my middle name to ‘Danger’. “Yes, Danger is my middle name”. What a line and a conversation starter with new people but in the end I didn’t want to turn my name change into a joke. ‘Warren’ is the middle name I share with my dad.

McClane – Yes it is based on Bruce Willis’ hard nut New York police officer in Die Hard, John McClane. Does this mean I want to be an action hero? Of course! That isn’t going to happen but this movie holds a significance to me for a couple of different reasons. Die Hard was released in 1988 and at the age of 16 it was the movie I loved going to the cinema to watch. It set the standard for action movies of the future and one of my best memories of my high school years was watching Die Hard with my best friend, Mark when we would watch it over and over again, reciting the lines and being amazed at this modern day hero without a cape. Later in life it also became a favourite movie of my niece and nephew, Misti and Aaron. Over the years when chatting on IM we would type in the one liners from Die Hard and we would try to outdo each other with the next line. My favourite line is, and please excuse the French, “No fucking shit lady, does it sound like I’m ordering a pizza?” Classic. A few years ago Misti, Aaron and I were sitting around and we gave some serious thought to changing our surnames. Misti and Aaron have both now officially changed their surnames to McClane and for different reasons to mine but they have maintained the link back to Die Hard. The way McClane is spelt is actually not that common and that really differs from ‘Smith’. I really hate the Smith name. It is so common but not as common as ‘Chang’. Think about it! I don’t have any brothers or uncles and I also didn’t have a son so therefore the ‘Smith’ family name ends with me. Of course ‘Smith’ isn’t going to leave the White Pages anytime soon so me changing to McClane isn’t going to hurt.

The ‘Smith’ family name ends with me so why not live the rest of my years with a name I like and am proud of. I hear you ask “Why aren’t you proud of the Smith name?”. I don’t want to go into too much detail here but my mum and dad divorced when I was 1. I was born in Adelaide and when I was 7 my mum packed myself and my 4 sisters up and moved us to Brisbane. I think it cut him pretty bad. That being said, dad never came to Brisbane to visit us until 2006. It was always us visiting him in Adelaide every few years. I don’t feel close to my dad, even though I would have loved to have a close bond with him. So if I don’t have a close connection to him why should I keep his middle and surnames? What’s the point? I can’t see one.

So they are the reasons why I am changing my name. You don’t have to like my reasons but I do hope that you support it by now calling me Jack. It is quite a process to change your name but I haven’t changed my identity. I am still the same person I was before, I just have a new signature to go with it.

It is not our name that defines us but it is our actions that make us who we are, I just now have a name that I like.

Overall it has cost us about $1,100 in fees to change our names including application fees, land title fees, loan change fees etc. I think it is the best $1,100 I have ever spent.

So what do you think? Have you ever considered changing your name? What would you change it to if you decided to do it? Let me know below by leaving a comment.

I just learned from Jesse Johnson’s blog that Vlad Markovic and Jeremy Kahn have announced a proof of the surface subgroup conjecture, that every complete hyperbolic -manifold contains a closed -injective surface. Equivalently, contains a closed surface subgroup. Apparently, Jeremy made the announcement at an FRG conference in Utah. This answers a long-standing question in -manifold topology, which is a variation on some problems originally posed by Waldhausen. If one further knew that hyperbolic -manifold groups were LERF, one would be able to deduce that all hyperbolic -manifolds are virtually Haken, and (by a recent theorem of Agol), virtually fibered. Dani Wise (and others) have programs to show that hyperbolic -manifold groups are LERF; if successful, this would therefore resolve some of the most important outstanding problems in -manifold topology (in fact, I would say: the most important outstanding problems, by a substantial margin).

In fact, the argument appears to work for hyperbolic manifolds of every dimension , and possibly more generally still. Details on the argument of Markovic-Kahn are scarce (Vlad informs me that they expect to have a preprint in a few weeks) but the sketch of the argument presented by Kahn is compelling. Roughly speaking, the argument (as summarized by Ian Agol in a comment at Jesse’s blog) takes the following form:

Given , for a sufficiently big constant , one can find “many” immersed, almost totally-geodesic pairs of pants (i.e. thrice-punctured spheres) with geodesic boundary components (i.e. “cuffs”) of length very close to . In fact, one can further insist that the complex length of the boundary geodesic is very close to (i.e. holonomy transport around this geodesic does not rotate the normal bundle very much).

Conversely, given any geodesic of complex length very close to , one can find many such pairs of pants that it bounds, and moreover one can find them so that the normal to the geodesic pointing in to the surface is prescribed.

If one takes a sufficiently big collection of such geodesic pairs of pants, one has enough of them in oppositely-aligned pairs along each boundary component, that they can be matched up (by some version of Hall’s marriage theorem), and furthermore, matched up with a definite prescribed “twist” along the boundary components

One checks that the resulting (closed) surface is sufficiently close to totally geodesic that the ambient negative curvature certifies it is -injective

Many aspects of this argument have a lot in common with some previous attempts on the surface subgroup conjecture, including one recent approach by Bowen (note: Bowen’s approach is known to have some fatal difficulties; the “twist” in 3. above specifically addresses some of them). All of these points deserve some comments.

First, where do the pairs of pants come from? If is a totally geodesic pair of pants with boundary components of length close to , the pants retract onto a geodesic spine, i.e. an immersed totally geodesic theta graph, whose edges all have length close to , and which meet at angles very close to degrees. One can cut this spine up into two pieces, which are obtained by exponentiating the edges of an infinitesimal (almost)-planar tripod for length .

Given a tripod in some plane in the tangent space at some point of , one can exponentiate the edges for length to construct such a half-spine; if and are a pair of tripods for which the exponentiated endpoints nearly match up, with almost opposite tangent vectors, then the resulting half-spines can be glued up to make a spine, and thickened to make a pair of pants. One key idea is to use the exponential mixing property of the geodesic flow on a hyperbolic manifold, e.g. as proved by Pollicott. Given some tolerance , once is sufficiently large, the mixing result shows that the set of such pairs of tripods for which such a matching occurs have a definite density in the space of all pairs (and in fact, are more and more equidistributed in this space, in probability). In fact, one may even insist that two of the pairs of prongs join up to make some specific closed geodesic of length almost , and vary the pair of third prongs a very small amount so that they glue up. This takes care of the first two points; this seems quite uncontroversial (exponential mixing comes in, I suspect, to know that one doesn’t need to wiggle the pair of third prongs much, having paired the first two pairs).

The matching (i.e. the gluing up of opposite pant cuffs) apparently is done by some variant of Hall’s marriage theorem. One needs to know (I think) that for any finite set of cuffs to be glued, the set of other cuffs that they could potentially be glued to is at least as big in cardinality. This probably needs some thought, but it is plausibly true: given a cuff, it can be glued to any cuff which is almost oppositely aligned to it, and since there is some tolerance in the angle of gluing — this is where dimension at least is necessary — and moreover, since oriented cuffs are almost equidistributed, one can always find “more” cuffs that are opposite, up to a bit of tolerance, to any given subset of cuffs (of course, more details are necessary here). There is an extra wrinkle to the argument, which is that the gluing must be done with a “twist” of a definite amount, so that cuffs are not glued up in such a way that the perpendicular geodesic arcs joining pairs of cuffs match up.

(Update 8/8: I think there must necessarily be more details to the matching argument, as very loosely described above. There are at least two additional issues that must be dealt with in order to perform a matching: a parity issue (since each pants has an odd number of cuffs) and a homology issue (if the argument relativizes, so that one fixes some collection of cuffs in advance and glues up everything else, one concludes a posteriori that the union of the unglued cuffs is homologically inessential). Probably the parity issue (and more subtle divisibility issues) can be solved by gluing with real-valued weights, then approximating a real solution by a rational solution, and multiplying through to clear denominators. Maybe the homology issue does not arise, if in fact the argument doesn’t relativize.) Both these issues suggest that one does not specify in advance a collection of pants to be glued up, but rather wants to glue up a definite number of pants from some subset.)

This issue of a twist is important for the 4th point, which is perhaps the most delicate. In order to know that the resulting surface is -injective, one must use geometry. A closed (immersed) surface in a hyperbolic manifold which is (locally) very close to being totally geodesic is -injective. One way to see this is to observe that a geodesic loop in the surface is almost geodesic in the manifold; the ambient negative curvature means that the geodesic can be shrunk (by the negative of the gradient of length in the space of loops) to become geodesic in the ambient manifold; if it is close to being geodesic at the start, it very quickly becomes totally geodesic, without getting much shorter. Any closed geodesic in a hyperbolic manifold is essential.

If one builds a surface by gluing up almost totally geodesic pieces in such a way that there is almost no angle along the gluing, the resulting surface is almost geodesic, and therefore injective. However, one must be very careful to control the geometry of the pieces that are glued, and this is hard to do if the injectivity radius is very small. A geodesic pair of pants has area no matter how long its boundary components are. So if the boundary components have length , then at the points where they are thinnest, they are only across. If cuffs are glued where the pants are thinnest, even if the gluing angle is very small, the surfaces themselves might twist through a big angle in a very short time. So one needs to make sure that the thinnest part of one pants are glued up to a thicker part of the next, which is glued to a thicker part of the next . . . and so on. This is the point of introducing the twist before gluing: the twists accumulate, and before one has glued pieces together, one has entered the thick part of some pants, where the injectivity radius is bounded below by some universal constant.

Anyway, this seems like a really spectacular development, with an excellent chance of working out. Some of the ingredients — e.g. the exponential mixing of the geodesic flow — work just as well in variable negative curvature. In fact, some version of it should work for arbitrary hyperbolic groups (using Mineyev’s flow space). Without knowing more details of the argument, one can’t say how delicate the last part of the argument is, and how far it generalizes (but readers are invited to speculate . . .)

Storm at home should be too strong for the inconsistent Cowboys. Storm lost a tough one against the Dragons last week, but showed their premiership credentials in the first half. The Cowboys will need Thurston and Bowen to spark up again this week, but I think it will be too much for them after a strong showing against the Titans at home last week. Storm have won their last 5 meetings and have not lost to the Cowboys at Olympic Park in all 6 matches. The Storm should continue this streak tomorrow night.
