4/5

Directed by: F. Gary Gray

Starring: Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler

Clyde Shelton is an inventor. Seemingly a good-natured family man, the devil takes hold of his extremely well motivated hands following the murder of his wife and daughter. Nick Rice is an attorney. After striking a somewhat Faustian deal with one of the killers, to secure the conviction of the other, he finds himself the target of Shelton’s latent malevolence. Ten years pass and, needless to say, the tragedy is not forgotten. The Philadelphia justice system shudders as Shelton emerges a fully fledged terrorist with the imagination of Leonardo da Vinci and the know-how to back it up.

Starting out as the love-child of Enemy Of The State and Saw, Law Abiding Citizen soon establishes itself as a story deeply rooted in biting moral debate. Much like the tragic heroes of Sophocles and Euripides, Shelton is a man throttling down the path of hubris towards a gripping climax. Director F. Gary Gray frames Shelton brilliantly as an early Catholic martyr praying the rosary; defying a corrupt system as he calmly twiddles the beads on a bracelet his daughter made for him. Both committed family men, Rice and Shelton play tug of war with a rope twisted from dual strands of intellect and action. The story pivots on this constant back and forth; two forces, each fighting in the name of God, with no right answer. The issue is a fascinating one.

A well balanced combination of ballsy action sequences, powerful rhetoric and stinging pathos, Law Abiding Citizen is easily appealing to a wide range of audiences. More Daniel Craig’s Bond than Roger Moore’s, the gutsy script provides a safety net of humour with just the right amount of gore to make the experience feel dangerous. It’s edgy, it’s clever and more importantly it asks questions, and valid ones at that! Foxx and Butler are even matched in ability and both turn in convincing and engaging performances. Where Law Abiding Citizen possibly falls flat is in the unravelling of the game.

Whilst wanting to surrender and just go with the flow, you could easily be forgiven for feeling like you need a bit more detail. All of the scheming, the technology, the wizardry seems to be just a little out of reach. Though not necessarily a bad thing, the final reveal is perhaps a little less empowering than other similarly successful thriller flicks. If you can live with a bit of mystery, problem solved. If not, you could well find yourself a little underwhelmed.

This past weekend, Twilight-ers proved that not even a movie about Sandra B., Tim Mcgraw, and some fat, black kid (Another movie about fat black children? Read: Precious), an unfunny Robin Williams, and the ghost of Jim Carey’s career could stop them from being number one.

New Moon, the Twilight sequel, earned more than $42 million dollars at the box office this past weekend. Even though that’s a 40% drop from the previous weekend, that’s still a shitload of money. That brings it’s total receipts, in the US, to $190 million (*final figures due later today).

But this past weekend also showed some other strong contenders, with “The Blind Side” starring Sandra Bullock bringing in an impressive $40 million (Take that, Twi-Bitches!). “Old Dogs” starring that dude from “Look Who’s Talking” and that other dude from “Patch Adams,” despite horrible, sucky, reviews, managed to pull in $17 million.

Door closed for this weekend. Let’s see about next weekend. Your prediction: Who is going to be #1 next weekend?

Let ME know! (See below for full list)

New Moon has set a record for the biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever with over $66 mil for the first 5 days of being out. And they have made over $270 mil so far. That’s pretty darn good. The Blind Side did really well too with over $40 mil and over $100 mil total so far. I hope this helps Sandra realize she doesn’t have to make terrible movies. Good ones will do better for her.

Other Film News:

This is funny. For his audition to play the park ranger in the live action Yogi Bear film, this guy filmed himself reading his part to a real bear! And he got the part! Good for you, TJ Miller. They are filming now in New Zealand. Here is his audition:

J.J. Abrams, they guy who directed the awesome Star Trek film is going to direct a feature film version of Samurai Jack. It will be animated with some 3D.

Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps is filming in New York with Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf. Donald Trump has a cameo. Charlie Sheen, Josh Brolin, and Susan Sarandon are also in it. Maybe it’ll be good. I liked the first one.

On top of all the whoring advertising James Cameron has been doing for Avatar he’s going to have a live webcast Q & A on MTV with the cast BEFORE the 1/2 hour TV special that they will air. Overkill? I think maybe so.

From Variety.com:

The DreamWorks principals have greenlit the “Rocky”-esque robot tale “Real Steel,” to star Hugh Jackman, as their first pic since raising $650 million from both J.P. Morgan Securities and Reliance Big Pictures and an additional $175 million from Disney, which will distrib DreamWorks titles.

Story centers on a fighter who has to reinvent himself when human boxers are replaced by robots. Jackman will play a struggling Robot Boxing promoter who finds a discarded robot that always seems to win. He also discovers he has a 11-year-old son, and they bond as the robot brawls its way toward the top.

Although grounded in the father-son relationship, Levy describes the film as a “rousing sports movie” with Jackman’s character “a former boxer who can no longer do the only job he’s good at, and one particular robot that may be his return to grace.”

Okay, I gotta say that I did not see this coming. A lot weird shit went on in the box office this weekend and I find myself rather surprised. The big story this weekend is not any of the openers or New Moon, but The Blind Side in its second weekend. Why? I’ll get to that in a minute, but first we have to discuss New Moon, which repeats at number one.

Well, New Moon tops the charts for a second weekend, which was easily expected. However, the margin by which it claimed number one was significantly smaller than anyone expected. I knew New Moon would crash and burn this weekend, but I didn’t think it would be quite this bad. Anyway, it plummeted 70% down to 42.9 million. Ouch. If Thanksgiving weekend did in fact mitigate that fall, I can’t imagine what it would’ve hit if this were a normal weekend. We could’ve been talking an 80% drop. Damn. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter at this point. The total is already up to 231 million, about forty million more than the first entry in the series. I’m really on the fence about the ability of New Moon do reach 100 million. On the merits of the first weekend alone, it really should. To open to 140 million and not at least cross 300 is ridiculous. At the very least, though, it should end up in the 285 million ballpark, a massive improvement over Twilight.

The Blind Side

Wow. Just wow. This came out of nowhere. After The Blind Side debuted to a stellar 34 million last weekend, it continues to defy expectations. It’s not like it just a had a really small drop this weekend. No, it actually increased. And substantially too. It comes within an inch of supplanting New Moon too. The Blind Side increased a remarkable 18% to 40.1 million. Damn. You never see that kind of thing without a significant increase in the number of theatres. The Blind Side only added 30, which is negligible. Really, that is remarkable. What we have on our hands here is one hell of a crowd pleaser. For it to go up like that…. wow. Don’t get to discuss things like this very often. Anyway, the total is now up to an even 100 million. By comparison, The Proposal, which debuted to a similar 33 million, had amassed 69 million by the end of its weekend. I never, ever thought I’d say this, but based on what The Blind Side has done this weekend, 200 million isn’t out of the question, especially with the rest of the Holiday season ahead of us. Next weekend will tell a better story, though. Wow, this is motherfucking Sandra Bullock’s year.

2012 levels off a bit, dipping 33% to 17.7 million. As the only more male oriented picture in the top three, it’s not surprising that it held pretty well. However, that 138 million total is still kind of disappointing, at least on the domestic front. I really would’ve loved to have seen this plummet again this weekend because it was so terrible, but oh well.

Debuting disappointingly in fourth, we have Old Dogs. This performed nothing like Wild Hogs and I’m very, very grateful because of that. It pulled in a decent 16.9 million. It’s rocking an abysmal 6% at Rotten Tomatoes. Wow. But then again, Americans are fucking retarded and this will probably find its way to a respectable gross anyway. Fuck people.

As expected, A Christmas Carol enjoys a nice boost over this weekend, one that was desperately needed. It went up 28% to 15.8 million, lifting its total to 104.9 million. It still has a long way to go for profitability, though.

And debuting in sixth amidst a crowded weekend, we have the hidden gem that is Ninja Assassin. Two of my friends that saw this with me absolutely hated it. One said part of him died inside. Another seriously considers it “one of the worst movies ever.” Me, I loved every minute of it and don’t feel like I wasted my money at all. But, anyway, I already reviewed this, so on to the box office. It grossed a respectable 13.3 million, which given the reviews and all the other movies in the market, I think that’s pretty good. Plus, its per theatre average actually exceeded both A Christmas Carol and Old Dogs. Even still, I really don’t expect any sort of legs from this. But I’m sure as hell going to get it when it comes out on DVD.

Planet 51 holds well, slipping just 17% to 10.2 million. It has a somewhat decent total so far of 28.5 million. I wouldn’t quite call this a failure per se, but–well, actually looking at its budget and seeing that it cost 70 million, maybe failure would be so inappropriate a label.

Precious made 7.1 million. Down 35%. 32.5 million total. I do not care.

The extremely creepy looking The Fantastic Mr. Fox debuts to rather weak numbers in ninth. And I say, well, good. It looked and seemed weird as well. Made a little less than seven million this weekend. Though, admittedly, on any other weekend, seven million would normally get you much higher than ninth, but the box office has been in hyper drive the past two weekends.

George Clooney takes up the bottom two spots of the top ten with The Men Who Stare at Goats following his creepy fox movie. And it’s a distant tenth at that. TMWSAG grossed 1.5 million for a gross now of 30.5 million. Eh, not bad, but given the starpower, I think more was expected.

EDIT: Well, this is why I sometimes prefer to wait for the actual numbers to come in. As it turns out, TMWSAG didn’t take the number ten spot. The Road, which I personally thinks looks quite good, (I love Viggo Mortenson) breaks into the top ten while only in 111 theatres. It edged Goats by only about five hundred dollars, which is ridiculously close. It had the highest per theatre average in the top ten. This reminds me that I really need to see Old Country for Old Men. Anyway, yeah, The Road FTW!

Yeah, so there you go. New Moon’s drop is almost as amazing as its opening weekend and The Blind Side treats us to something we don’t see often, an uptick in box office due to soley word of mouth. I’m afraid this hot streak may be over next weekend as we got a whole bunch of shit.

Armored: An utterly ridiculous premise that I can’t see doing anything special at the box office.

Brothers: An even more ridiculous premise that has produced one of the most unintentionally hilarious trailers I’ve ever seen. It’s supposed to be so intense and suspenseful, but it’s just bad. And really funny. I just can’t take Tobey Maguire serious in this. If I were ever forced to see this, I’d definitely be laughing all the way through.

Everybody’s Fine: Probably the best choice for next weekend. I like the fact that it’s a Christmas movie released during the actual Christmas season as opposed to something like A Christmas Carol, which got started like two days after Halloween.

Transylmania: Why, humanity, why? Please, please, please, everyone, ignore this movie. Pretend it doesn’t exist and don’t go see it. In fact, as soon as you’re done reading this, forget you ever heard of it and let’s let it fail as miserably as possibly.

Until we meet again.

Cybill Sheperd in L’ultimo spettacolo

!!!

Peter Bogdanovich presenta L’ultimo spettacolo, uno straordinario, indimenticabile affresco sull’America del 1950, con tema la giovinezza di un gruppo di ragazzi che vedrà la propria vita cambiare a seguito di avvenimenti di piccola entità, prova concreta che la vita non è solo sconvolgimenti biblici. Il film, che si avvale di una colonna sonora sontuosa, diviene ben presto un cult;

1975: Occhi bianchi sul pianeta Terra (Omega man)

Continuavano a chiamarlo Trinità

Nino Manfredi in Per grazia ricevuta

Bello onesto emigrato Australia sposerebbe compaesana illibata

Laura Antonelli in Il merlo maschio

Cosa che invece non accade al kolossal Scipione detto anche l’africano, di Luigi Magni: il film, che pure annovera nel cast Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni, Silvana Mangano, Turi Ferro ottiene scarso successo;

Maria Grazia Buccella in Basta guardarla

Senta Berger in Roma bene

Tra i film dell’anno, che ebbero un’accoglienza tiepida dal pubblico, immeritatamente, cito E Johnny prese il fucile di Dalton Trumbo con Donald Sutherland, storia terribile di un ragazzo ridotto ad una larva umana dalla guerra che chiede di poter morire e invece viene trattato come una cavia da laboratorio;

Lo strano vizio della signora Wardh

L’abominevole Dr. Phibes

Pierre Clementi in La vittima designata

While New Moon continues to dominate the past two weeks at the box office, The Blind Side comes out of nowhere with an even stronger 2nd weekend (+18%). This is unusual for any ‘non-holiday’ movie. Obviously strong word of mouth helped it to almost take 1st place over force of nature New Moon. It be interesting to see if it can take first place in its third week, which is unheard of. Good luck to The Blind Side!

The film New Moon (A follow on from the film Twilight) was released in November 2009, breaking a block buster record for most views of a new a release in its first weekend. Staring a lot of popular characters including male stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner known for there large female fan base. This was an exciting experience as the first film twilight gained such a large audience in such a short space of time, the movie made a much larger profit then expected as it was in fact a low budget film leaving new moon with a larger budget. You are able to notice a great difference in not old the filming techniques but the locations, scenery and special effects that create this spectacular movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film as I am one of millions of fans of the series. The story line not only develops with plenty of twists and unexpected occurrences, I think the higher budget has enabled the project to be taken to a new level. The drama of the film keeps you interested from start too finish with excellent man candy to stare at! My favourite part of film is when a new love arises between two main characters Bella and Jacob, however it gets exciting when the return of Edward creates friction between Bella and her two loves who are great enemies. The ending leaves you questioning the rest of the storyline which I think is unfortunate for those who have read the books and know what happens next.

After hearing all the hype I just had to check out Paranormal Activity at the weekend. But whilst you’d expect to leave the movie terrified and wanting to find out all about ghosts, demons and the like, instead I was more interested in the marketing behind it. This movie cost just $11,000 to make and has made in excess of $60 million within the first 6 weeks of US screenings.

So what made it so successful? Is it actually the most terrifyingly scary movie you’ll ever see? Or did it just involve very clever marketing? Whilst the last 20 minutes made the movie for me I’d have to go with the latter!

The screening of this movie was initially limited to only a handful of midnight screenings in college towns which promptly sold out. Fans who missed out on a screening were told to “demand it” to be shown at further locations via the official website, whilst the lucky few who got to see the movie were prompted to share their reaction via the website, twitter hashtag and facebook. This generated large amounts of interest about the movie, whilst adverts showing audience reactions only added to the hype already generated. When demands for the movie hit 1 million people it was released nationwide, and that’s not the end of it. Now rumour has it there are several endings to the movie and the one being shown in cinemas at the moment is actually a much shorter version than the one shown at earlier screenings. Which could potentially lead to increased hype if they alternate the versions shown in the cinema. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see on that one!

Either way, I think the use of consumer involvement to generate hype has been fantastic, and what did I think of the movie you ask? Shot in a similar way to both Blair Witch and Cloverfield, the relationship of Katie and Micha is believable and draws you in, there are some funny moments and the subtle goings on during the first few nights helps build the suspense. I’d definitely recommend a watch, worst case you can amuse yourself with the audience reactions! And considering it cost just $15,000 in total, makes me want to pick up a camera myself…….

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!

Man, do these guys have a lot to be thankful for….

Following its record-breaking first weekend, first-place finisher New Moon brought in $42.5 million over the three-day (Friday through Sunday) weekend, driving its cume to a fantastic $230.7 — the sixth highest of the year, just below Star Trek ($257.7 million). Not far behind, The Blind Side came in at number two with $40.1 million by appealing to audiences who would rather watch a movie about football than stay home for a game on TV. With a $100.3 total so far, the pigskin pic is Sandra Bullock’s second $100 million hit of the year after this summer’s The Proposal ($164 million).

It’s Friday, November 20, 2009 and something is rotten in the state of Box Office Sales.

A usurper to the throne of Single Day Ticket Sales has smote the hither-to unchallenged king… or… maybe he wasn’t smote, perhaps he was just ‘sparkled’ off the throne.

Still, the world watched in shock as comic book super heroes set down the scepter and backed away from the throne, stepping in line with the ranks of their slack-jawed disillusioned fans, muscle-bound 80’s action heroes, and legitimate movie monsters, and actually bowed down before the new king: temperamental teenage vampires and the girls who love them.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon outsold the opening night totals of Iron Man, Spider-Man 2, and yes, even 2008’s Dark Knight, earning the best world-wide opening night of all time with a confirmed $72.7 million dollars made on Friday alone. The king of all comic books films, Dark Knight, racked up $68 million on its opening night, and that was during the summer; blockbuster season. New Moon earned itself the best November opening in history, topping the positively passé Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire by over $20 million.

But what do all of these numbers mean? What shocks me the most about them is the apparent purchasing power of the 9-15 year old girl demographic – not the fact that this group exists as a mighty market niche, but that it’s equaled – and in some cases surpassed – the strength of the nostalgic, entertainment starved and heavy-walleted males age 16-35 machine.

I realize that more people than girls aged 9-15 saw New Moon. There obviously would have to have been some parents filling theatre seats, required to supply the cash and transportation for their daughters and their friends. I pity these parents, who, unlike their children, have critical tastes that outweigh juvenile crushes on the film’s stars. The film is averaging a grade of 4.7 out of ten on movie site Rottentomatoes.com.

It’s also possible that there was some crossover from the mighty comic book crowd; that rarely seen ‘nerdy girl’ demographic that happily and freely went to view both the Dark Knight and New Moon in theatres. Besides parents and comic book-friendly girls I think the next largest group, possibly the main reason for New Moon’s devastating opening couple of days, is that of teenage couples. One half is a superhero-obsessed teenaged boy and the other is a vampire/werewolf obsessed teenaged girl. The girl has been dragged along to see Dark Knight in theatres, and, depending on the length of the relationship, also Iron Man, Spider Man, X-Men, etc. The boy may been dragged to some of the later Harry Potter films, but he was certainly dragged to see Twilight and now, New Moon. It’s payback time. And every time this happens it cancels out some of the Dark Knight’s box office winnings.

There he is. Get a good look. A young Robert Pattinson. How many years before we see his face scroll by, one March in the future, on the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ screen? Hopefully when his Cro-Magnon mug pops up on that big screen it’s greeted with a moment of disassociation before a few former fans recall, oh yeah, the Twilight kid, and then his memory is immediately set aside, never to be dusted off again, as he is over shadowed by an adored costume designer or cinematographer who’s also died that year.

As for me, I’m staying away from the Twilight series. Call me a fantasy purist or a comic book geek, but vampires and werewolves do not pal around with young girls in forests. They graphically devour them.

Is it a generational thing? When I was say, 13, I deposited a lot of money into the pockets of whoever had the rights to the Pokémon television show, and movies, and video games, and trading cards. Now that I’ve given all that up, I can still look back fondly on those days, while I simultaneously loathe everything that’s made to be enjoyed by kids of that age today.

I was definitely lined up to see the first two Lord of the Rings films earlier this decade – though sans costume, makeup, or ‘Team Hobbit’ t-shirt.

Before this turns into a nostalgia-fest, I’d like to bring this story back to New Moon’s smashing of comic book movies’ box office records. Kristen Stewart and crew had already blown away all comers in the category of November release, online pre-order sales, opening night sales, and midnight screening sales, and, in the category of biggest opening weekend, they were rolling over titles like X-Men 3: The Last Stand (a paltry $102.7 million) and Spider-Man ($114.8 million) like villages in the Westfold.

Spider-Man 3, second on the all-time opening weekend list, was holed up comfortably in its impenetrable $151.1 million – so it thought. After all, New Moon showed in two hundred fewer theatres than Spider-Man 3 during its opening weekend. But with its first night of sales reaching $72.7 million, and Saturday adding on another $42.3 million, New Moon was really crashing against Spider-Man 3’s fortress walls – so to speak. If New Moon could muster $36 million on its Sunday, then Spider-Man 3 would join the ranks of defeated foes, snuffed out by a flood of screaming teenage girls.

But New Moon failed. Maybe it was the slew of barely-passable and negative critical reviews? But no, that can’t be, this movie is part of a wildly popular saga. It has been called ‘critic-proof.’ So how was it that New Moon fell short of having the highest grossing opening weekend of all time? Don’t be coy, you know what it was that saved Spider-man 3 at the crack of dawn of what seemed an un-winnable battle.

Post script:

How come we can’t get the Christian right to come protest these movies? They didn’t like the Da Vinci Code or Harry Potter but I haven’t heard one peep about them hating on this godless sparkly vampire shit. Maybe they’ve learned that drawing attention to these movies only ever beefs up the eventual box office tally.

Still, I’d really like to see the Jesus Camp lady holding up a copy of the Twilight Saga and preaching its evils. It’d finally be something we could agree on.

New Moon”, scrive Carl Diorio in The Hollywood Reporter.
