Actualmente la industria musical tiene dos maneras de ser rentable: la primera de las opciones son los directos. Hacía tiempo que no había un volumen tan elevado de propuestas semana a semana. La segunda de las opciones es sacar cajas recopilatorias de éxitos o de discografías completas. Los box set suelen traer además numerosos bonus track a modo de rarezas, libritos, material inédito, videos, ediciones de coleccionista, limitadas… en fin, un conjunto de características de gran reclamo para los fans más incondicionales.

Ahora que se acercan navidades, los box set florecen de la mano de las grandes discográficas. La discográfica EMI, durante estas mismas fechas del año pasado, sacaba una caja recopilatoria remasterizada de todos los discos oficiales de El Último de la Fila llamada Grabaciones completas. Los bonus track que adornaban este pack eran un DVD lleno de videos y un libro en el que destacaban las fotografías y una entrevista realizada por Diego A. Manrique. Aquel box set se agotó rápidamente y un año después sale la segunda edición. Respecto a la primera edición, la única novedad de la nueva edición que sale a la venta el próximo 1 de diciembre en edición limitada de 2.000 ejemplares, es que el formato es en vinilo. Desde Cuando la pobreza entra por la puerta, el amor salta por la ventana del 85, pasando por Nuevo pequeño catálogo de seres y estares del 90, hasta La rebelión de los hombres rana del 95; están todos los discos de estudio de El Último de la Fila.

Artífices de una de las mejores bandas que ha conocido el país, Manolo García y Quimi Portet, han escogido caminos distintos en sus carreras en solitario pero la actividad no cesa. Manolo García sacó el pasado 2008 su último disco Saldremos a la lluvia con gira incluida y Quimi Portet tiene nuevo disco desde septiembre llamado Viatge a Montserrat. La principal pregunta que se formulan los admiradores de la banda desde su disolución en el año 98 es… ¿Volverá algún día El Último de la Fila con nuevo disco o nueva gira? Suddenly it is end of year poll reflection time again, and the UK Sunday newspaper The Observer has today recommended The Beatles Stereo box set as the box set of the year, obviously. So, what I intend to do here is mashup my favourite ten tracks from the Remasters with my favourite ten tracks from 2009. As you DJs out there know it doesn’t quite work like that as you need to go with the Flow, so this isn’t quite my 10 /10 selection but I think it works as a mix; so lets start with a wake up call! GOOD Morning Beatles Fans…

Love the fade-out of the animals at the end, Johns’ request to Geoff Emerick was to engineer a fade out sequence of animals who would eat the previous one. And in a dog eat dog (!?) world Miike Snow have come out in 2009 with a personal view of what the credit crunch makes them feel like; an Animal right? Sequencers set to stun on this one…

So circling synthesizers courtesy of of a Swedish Rasputin mashup, what can the Beatles say to that? The weathers fine, with swirling Rain, backing tapes and absolutely awesome bass from Paul. If you are reading this Mr Paul McCartney let me say that the revelation of the Remasters for me is your bass; absolutely unbelievable!

Nice alternative Rain video from Filippo Paparelli’s “Art and the Beatles” series, worth a look, but we need another video from a world-straddling four-headed musical colussus with a manager as the fifth member of the band and who want to change the world; that’ll be U2 then. Inspired by Ringo’s Rain drumming? Don’t hold your breathe… Breathe!

So after that we need something else that is uplifting and driving and joyous, so take a deep breathe and you can sing along to the happy guitar riff song… (yeah I know this is the bass and laughter remix) For those of you who want the laughter outtake it is here

OK, you can Ignore the Ignorant after that, even with Crib kids from Leeds, well county town Wakefield actually, as a West Yorkshire boy We Share The Same Skies, even with that Lancastrian loser Johnny Marr, what does he not know about jangly guitar riffs? Here they are ripping up the Letterman Show, whilst David pops out to his private room presumably? Oh yes only we know and “I know”

So if you are” lonely” and “wanna die” HOLD IT! Here are “Yer Blues” from the White Album, remastered and played by that cheap covers band Dirty Mac. John Lennon on rhythm and Boss, Keith Richard on bass and Clapton let out on lead for the duelling guitars section and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Beatles, Cream, Stones and Hendrix sidemen, no wonder they didn’t catch on. I Like It though! Low-fi version here…

And now my own personal favourite track of the year.  My “honesty is concentric” too, as it was created on turntables of course, it is The Invisible now with a Monsters Waltz for all of us. Just brilliant, who are these guys? And a cracking live version here, but this is what I grew up with back in November 2009…

A riffingly thoughtful challenge from The Invisible there, so George what can you come up with to challenge that then? Old Brown Shoe! This was hidden behind The Ballad of The Bagism Duo but is a driving sock that sparkles afresh in the light of Remastering; foot down and drive it away, Georgie boy…

Less original than The Invisible, and with a title like that they must be American, but well Beatlesy on the chorus, Empire of the Sun (is that inspired by Spielberg or JG Ballard, or both) hit minor key majesty with We Are The People which of course is almost the American Constitution; it’s a kicker and you can sing along. Oh I see they are from Oz and their singles flopped! What do I know?

But a definite lead in to The Ballad of John and Yoko. The Beatles were arguably more popular in Australia than anywhere else, having the Top SIX singles there when they had the Top Five in the US, April 1964. And their top single was the All My Loving EP, extra-ordinary stuff, but here is the newspaper ballad instead; just John and Paul in a day. Remaster version here but here is a video cleverly cut to match the lyrics;

And a great 2009 track from Zero 7 which Swings along to the filmic theme of the year. Notice the sweet use of the “Hang” drum towards the end, kind of like an expensive steel drum, and also judiciously in evidence on the Portico Quartet Cittagazze.

You say you want a set of Remasters, well you know, we all want to remix the world. Shooby doo-wop, got to be the live version for me.

So after a Revolution I guess we might all speak Fula like Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba as West African music continues to refresh itself, especially in Mali and Bamako. The sound reminds me of Salif Keita’s classic Soro album. Here they are on Jools Holland’s Later going even faster than the recorded version!

I love the story that The Beatles recorded Hey Bulldog whilst they were filming the video for Lady Madonna, too boring just to mime so lets’ make some new music guys. I think this was the last song they made all together with the four of them, but here is the out-take from the movie.

And here is a genius piece of  re-invention, Norah Jones Chasing Pirates. Sexier than Keira Knightley with a great voice and a thumping tune (?) Here is the official video, but still a great studio performance…

As well as coming from Somalia Pirates can be Losers too, even before heading off towards Davy Jones locker. This was written by Lennon in his Fat Elvis period and for some reason they released the great I Feel Fine as the single instead of this Dylan inspired sing-a-long, I’m A Loser; notice Lennon’s sartorial tribute to Dylan hanging off his neck…

Old bands never die, or fade away, they just beget generations of successors. Here is Bad Lieutenant, title by Abel Ferrara (remake by Scorsese soon), yet another bit of genius from the Fact know as Manchester, sounds like The Smiths meet Joy Division on a day off at the Lido; Sink or Swim time guys

And it really reminds me of something, something with a harmonica and that New Order lilt and “little girls” and trains and the invention of the video by Dick Lester and a fade-in groove, what else? I Should Have Known Better! With the Liverpool Shuffle, here they are, “The Beatles”…

Magical Mystery Tour is The Beatles (one?) moment of madness when they tried to manage themselves ofter Brian Epstein died, watch out for the upcoming movie about him The Fifth Beatle. I missed MMT as my Dad was in the Army and we were living in Germany so I have always had a soft spot for it, and for the well ‘ard I Am The Walrus, which just seems to get Howlingly better over time for me, and how wonderful to hear a Remaster, despite the endless layers of tape hiss. Well that is what you got from the endless layers of invention involved. Electric Light Orchestra were invented in response to this track, and Oasis did a great version as an early calling card before they became mega. George Martin hated it but it changed the life of my “pornographic priestess” friend. Here is the original, now available in three flavours, original, remastered and Loved Up in Las Vegas…

And in The End, you have to love the trilogy of guitar solos, prefaced by Ringo’s one and only whole kit drum mashup. The Abbey Road song-cycle, pop opera at its most sublime. And by 1′31″ The Beatles have anticipated all of cock-rock, but with precision, inter-play and power. The sequence of three guitar solos lasts just 55 seconds; you can  guess who plays which and then find the answers here.

This past September, the cult 70s power-pop band Big Star released a box set anthology. If you’ve never heard the band,  check out their albums #1 Record and Radio City. Odds are, many of their songs will sound familiar to you (their song “In the Streets” became the theme song for “That 70’s Show,” for example). The box set is not for the uninitiated, but fans will appreciate the large number of unreleased tracks and alternate takes including a version of “The Ballad of El Goodo” with different lyrics.

This anthology reignited my interest in the band, which I first read about in Rolling Stone while I was in high school. At the time I made a mental note of the band, but didn’t pick up an album until a few years later. In my sophomore year of college, I really started listening to their first two albums, and thought, “I could have written those songs.”

This “I could have written that” quality of Big Star’s music is partly what inspired me to begin writing songs during my junior year of college. Big Star has had a similar effect on several generations of performers – The Replacements, R.E.M., and Elliott Smith have all cited Big Star as an influence. Yet, the seeming simplicity of Big Star’s music is misleading. Few songwriters have the ability to write a tune as sweet, compact, and meaningful as “Thirteen.” It is largely singer/songwriter/guitarist Alex Chilton’s ability to craft elegant, yet seemingly effortless pop songs that makes Big Star a band worth talking about nearly forty years after their formation.

Big Star represents a blend of genres and sounds that is difficult to pinpoint. Both historically and aesthetically, they stand in the intersection of punk, British invasion rock, soul, and classic country; a Genius playlist for the Big Star song “The Ballad of El Goodo” included songs by Wilco, The Replacements, The Zombies, Television, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Whiskeytown, Pavement, The White Stripes, and T. Rex. These groups are all very different, but Big Star somehow holds them together like a spider in the center of a web. Sometimes Big Star sounds like a power-pop band from the early 70s, which they are, and sometimes they sound like a band from 2009 trying to sound like a power-pop band from the early 70s. I like that.

While the current tour ends this coming weekend in Buffalo, all is not lost. According to Rolling Stone, there are plenty of goodies on the way to tide fans over until the next album of new material. First up, a DVD of the current tour is scheduled to come out just after Christmas. No details yet on whether this will be a single show dvd in the same vein as the Live In NYC (actually filmed over two nights) and Live in Barcelona DVD’s or a compilation of different shows. Either way, it’s sure to be worth picking up when it hits stores.

But the even better news: 2010 will finally see the release of the Darkness on The Edge of Town box set. It will likely contain a remastered edition of the 1978 classic, a documentary on the recording of the album plus live footage from the subsequent tour. If it’s anything like the Born to Run box set, this will be killer. I can’t wait.

The Triple Threat campaign was groundbreaking. It marked the beginning of Sean Price’s solo career with his debut release, “Monkey Barz.” Fans were introduced to the witty word play of Sean Price as he displayed ignorance at its finest. The campaign was the first time that grammy-award winning producer 9^th Wonder teamed up with Buckshot, for their project, “Chemistry.” The pairing of an MC & Producer from outside camps, which at the time was a novel idea, has since become a more popular trend.

Here’s a blurb about H&O’s recently released box set, “Do What You Want, Be What You Are,” from Creative Loafing’s Crib Notes blog. I’m pretty much a Hall & Oates completist, so while I have most of the songs included on the new box set (save for some live cuts and previously unreleased tunes), you can be sure that I’m adding it to my wishlist. It spans four decades (yes, four DECADES — and that alone is pretty impressive, regardless of what you might think of the duo’s music) of material, and from what other reviews are reporting, includes some very comprehensive liner notes which are just an added bonus to the great tunes.

Why? Because look what I just got for review!

Two new box sets from country legends! YEE-HAW!

The first box set, “Hank Williams: Revealed,” is a three-disc collection that is actually the second in a series from Time Life Entertainment. (The first was released last October under the same title.) In the early 1950s, at the height of his popularity, Williams recorded numerous commercial radio shows for Mother’s Best Flour Company. In between advertisements for hog mash and cow feed, he performed both classic hits and personal favorites, all recorded live and in their entirety. Those recordings were recently uncovered, and a handful of them have been collected here. The 50-track set starts off with what would go on to become Williams’ career changer, “Cold, Cold Heart.” But when this live recording took place in 1951, Williams had no idea that it would go on to make him a legend in the annals of country music. What sets this collection apart from most others is the storytelling and banter that was captured in between songs. Similar to Johnny Cash’s legendary jailhouse performances (Folsom or San Quentin, take your pick), the core of the collection is the music, but those side interactions and comments are really what make the set special. It serves as a time machine of sorts, whisking listeners back to 1951 and into the studio with the country legend himself. If you’re a fan of country greats and have a desire to hear them raw and uncut at their peak, this set is for you.

With a title like “Dolly,” I shouldn’t have to tell you who the second box set’s artist is. First, I have to get the art nerd stuff out of the way: This four-disc set is damn pretty. It’s designed beautifully, features amazing photography (some of which is by photographer Jim Herrington), and is a wonderful shelf piece for all CD dorks. Now that the visuals are out of the way, let’s get to the music. This set collects some of Parton’s best work from 1959 to 1992, starting with a scratchy little number called “Puppy Love.” From there, the discs roll through the decades, mixing well-known hits with previously unreleased tracks and demos. Included are a few of her duets with Porter Wagoner, whose popular television show Dolly appeared on numerous times. Of course, I’m not that big on her “9 to 5″ days, but I have to admit to a bit of nostalgia for “Islands in the Stream.” Kenny Rogers! Listening through the set chronologically, I realized how much Dolly’s voice matured through her career, changing from a squeaky girl into a strong-sounding woman. Sure, I probably like her earlier work a little more than I do her more recent stuff, but capturing that wide range of material–more than four decades worth of music–made me realize how cohesive it really all is. If you’re not familiar with Dolly’s work and easily chalk her up to Dollywood and big breasts, you should do yourself a favor and pick this up. You’ll soon learn what lies beyond her caricature.

Take Me to the Water: Immersion Baptism in Vintage Music and Photography 1890-1950
It just came out, published by Dust-to-Digital press, an Atlanta-based imprint responsible for some of the best history-music fusion products I’ve seen recently, including “The Art of Field Recording,” a multi-volume set that collects folk and traditional American music from an impressively long time ago, from all over the country, with a Smithsonian-level care for historical accuracy and preservation. Bob Dylan recently gave the set to Neil Young as a gift, if that says anything. This new book, though, especially interests me, it compiles vintage photos of immersion baptism– think that scene in O Brother Where Art Thou– and recordings of fire and brimstone preaching from radio stations of the time, gospel, and country folk. I got a chance to look through the book while fact-checking a review of it for Paste, and was blown away by both the review and the book itself– Jubera’s article is still the best description I can offer of what this book brings to the table. Seeing these photos is truly incredible– the racial barriers and commonalities, the leap-of-faith aspect, the river itself, the concept of seeing how something so marginal and stigmatized was actually so prevalent– it’s just a fascinating thing to sink your culturally-interested teeth into. The ritual itself is both haunting and intriguing, and this book really brings that to light. I strongly recommend checking it out. Meliodious Intoxication November 2009

Has anyone else heard of 1950s B Movie director Ed Wood? Famed for being the worst film director of all time and the maker of the ‘worst’ film of all time, ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’. I have to say before I saw Tim Burton’s excellent film, ‘Ed Wood’, I’d never heard of him. But watching that film and the way Johnny Depp, who played Ed Wood, managed to bring the late director ‘back to life’ as it where with his childlike enthusiasm for film making, I wanted to check out some of his films. I finally bought a VHS copy of ‘Bride of the Monster’, a film so bad it is actually very good.  When VHS went out of fashion and DVDs took over (I think I must’ve been the only person to have not seen that coming) I re-bought ‘Bride of the Monster’ on DVD with 5 of Wood’s other films. I’ve also got his biography, though it’s really more a collection of the individual memories of people who knew him, titled ‘Nightmare of Ecstasy’ by Rudolph Grey. What really makes me sad though is that Wood never really made it in his chosen profession during his lifetime. In the years before he died of alcoholism aged just 54 in 1978 he’d descended into making monster ‘nudie’ movies and turning out pulp novels to earn a living. I think it’s a real shame that Wood didn’t live for just a few more years to see his films finally achieve the recognition that he always hoped they would. Thanks for reading.

What I hope for is that when this is all done and dusted, there’ll be some universally epic DVD box set, possibly a Blu-Ray one, and it’ll have everything, everything and more on it, plus spectacular packaging. This is what I’m holding out for, really. With Blu-Ray at least. And also, I looked at the UK Blu-Ray and there was no mention of LOST University on it. Hmmm.

Maybe you have to be a guitar player to appreciate it, but the new AC/DC box set just may be the coolest one ever released.

Not only does the $200 box set come with musical rarities and memorabilia, but it’s packed inside a fully functional 1-watt guitar amplifier.

Inside the working amplifier comes three CDs, two DVDs, one vinyl LP, a 164-page hardcover book and memorabilia from the band’s earliest days of touring including a button, sticker, tour flier, track sheet, temporary tattoo, guitar pick, three lithographs, a poster and a replica of one of the fake $100 bills used to shower audiences during the ‘91 Moneytalks tour. The package is now available from the AC/DC Backtracks website.

The Backtracks CDs includes six never-before-released tracks, plus two discs of “live rarities” spanning from 1977’s Sydney Arts Festival to a 2000 show in Phoenix.

I want the Beatles Mono Box Set, the first ten albums as George Martin and The Beatles (and God) intended them to be.

On 09/09/09 the entire Beatles catalog was reissued with a remastered sound, new liner notes and embedded mini documentaries. Also released were both mono and stereo box sets which include all the remastered albums. By mid-morning, the box sets were gone, and attempts to reorder were in vain.

However, your worries are over dear Beatles fan. We just received a second shipment of the stereo box sets. At this point we have 16 left, so your dreams of owning the set, or gifting your resident Beatles fanatic with this box of awesomeness can still be realized.

Also, there is a hopefully-maybe-fingers-crossed buzz that we may be able to get our hands on some more of the mono set. We’re being told that some are being released late October/early November and we have a pending order for as many as we can get, so if mono is your thing and you didn’t get the set the first time around, keep the faith and check in with us in a couple of weeks.
