Box.net announced today that it has integrated its cloud-based document storage and sharing solution

Box.net announced today that it has integrated its cloud-based document storage and sharing solution with Salesforce.com. Current Box.net customers that want to integrate with Salesforce CRM can contact Box.net directly to activate the service. Salesforce.com customers may now download Box.net from the Salesforce.com AppExchange.

Box.net services will now be available in the Lead, Account, Contact, and Opportunity tabs of Salesforce CRM. In addition, the Box.net native interface and full range of services will be accessible via a dedicted tab on the Salesforce CRM interface. Users can upload new files to Box.net, edit existing files, digitally sign electronic documents, and e-mail or e-fax files. Large enterprise users will be given unlimited Box.net storage. The Box.net video embedded below briefly demonstrates the new Salesforce CRM integration.

While Box.net started as a consumer focused business, today’s announcement marks the first tangible manifestation of its emerging enterprise strategy. Box.net intends to be a cloud-based document repository that can be accessed through a broad range of enterprise applications.

The content-as-a-service model envisioned by Box.net will gain traction in the coming months. I believe that a centralized content repository, located on-premise or in the cloud, is a key piece of any enterprise’s infrastructure. Moreover, content services — functionality that enables users to create, store, edit, and share content — should be accessible from any enterprise application, including composite applications such as portals or mashups created for specific roles (e.g. sales and/or marketing employees, channel partners, customers). Users should not be required to interact with content only through dedicated tools such as office productivity suites and Content Management Systems (CMS).

Other content authoring and CMS software vendors are beginning to consider, understand, and (in some cases) embrace this deployment model. Box.net is one of the first proprietary software vendors to instantiate it. Adoption statistics of their new Salesforce CRM integration should eventually provide a good reading as to whether or not enterprise customers are also ready to embrace the content-as-a-service model.

Over time, this acquisition should improve the ways that you can view, share and collaborate on documents within Box.net, as the Increo Solutions tools become integrated into the service. Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box.net, said, “We really like what Increo has accomplished with their technology, which supports our goal of providing Box.net customers with a better way to share and work with documents and content in the cloud.”

However, for now, the Increo Solutions products remain standalone, and users can continue to work with the products and get technical support as before, according to this handy FAQ about the acquisition for current Increo customers.

Is this acquisition good news for Box.net customers?

While we have covered the social media aspects of LinkedIn in the past, the service is now being ext

While we have covered the social media aspects of LinkedIn in the past, the service is now being extended with third-party applications. Right now, Box.net Files and Huddle WorkSpaces enable you to use LinkedIn as an online document collaboration platform. These free tools are light versions of more full-featured products, but should serve you just fine for one-off collaboration needs.

The potential of LinkedIn for document collaboration may sound hinky to some, but there are some real benefits, including:

Secure access via the LinkedIn social network of contacts.

No infrastructure or administrative costs.

Access documents anywhere via the web, as long as you are a LinkedIn member.

However, there is a flip side, in that that there are basically two types of LinkedIn users — those who log in faithfully on a regular basis, and those who log in just often enough to respond to network invites, and otherwise spend little time on the site. Online document collaboration via LinkedIn is going to work best for organizations where LinkedIn is already part of the corporate culture. In other words, frequent LinkedIn users are going to be the best adopters of these applications.

Both of these applications are accessible from your LinkedIn profile, via the “Featured Applications” section.

Collaborating With Box.net Files

LinkedIn offers Box.net Files as an application you can add to your LinkedIn Profile offering the following:

Posting files to your LinkedIn profile.

Sharing files with your LinkedIn contacts.

You can view and edit files via your LinkedIn profile:

Collaborating With Huddle WorkSpaces

Huddle WorkSpaces is another LinkedIn application offering online document collaboration features, allowing users to work together with unlimited connections. It includes private online workspaces with 1GB of online storage space free. While this may not seem like a lot for document storage, it should more than accommodate your ad-hoc online collaboration needs.

It also includes an online discussion forum for the exchange of information and ideas. The Huddle Workspace forum should be familiar to those who spend even a minimal amount of time in online discussion forums.

While Huddle WorkSpaces touts that there is no need for Microsoft Office (s msft) or OpenOffice.org (s sunw) because you can create and edit documents online using the app, it’s probably better not to stray from your desktop apps when creating a document you are sharing online, because you’ll only suffer for it with incompatibility issues down the road.

You can also post comments and request approvals from your browser.

Online Collaboration with LinkedIn

If you’re on a budget, you can definitely find some good online collaboration options via LinkedIn, providing your group is comfortable with using it.

Have you tried LinkedIn’s online collaboration applications? What do you use them for?

Editor’s note: With this post we wecome Doriano Carta to the WWD team. Doriano, better known as “Paisano” on Twitter and everywhere else online, has written for several blogs including Mashable, SarahLacy.com, PistachioConsulting and Chris Brogan’s Dadomatic.com where he is also the Editor-in-Chief.

How much are you willing to pay for your favorite web apps and services? That’s the key question to which every app developer wants an answer. It seems as if the provider of every once-free service is now pondering ways to make money and extract revenue from their members, which makes sense when you consider that they are, after all, businesses.

Remember that old adage, you get what you pay for? Will we continue to see more of our favorite free services following this model of offering stripped down freemium accounts along with feature-rich premium plans? Will online advertising ever allow these sites to generate enough revenue to avoid going this route?

Proven Winners

Here are a couple of services that have found the right formula for success when it comes to charging their members. There might be some valuable lessons learned by examining these successful services to see how they managed to get their users to take out their wallets rather than their pitchforks and torches.

Flickr (s yhoo) was one of the first sites to capitalize on the fact that its members needed its services. They knew that people love their photos and they would be more than willing to pay a small fee for the convenience of storing and sharing their precious collections online. The paid accounts offered a few other bells and whistles, too, which only made the decision to pay easier.

Evernote is another service that was clever enough to jump on a need it knew its members would pay for — storing notes and information in the cloud, and then having them accessible via the web from their desktop and mobile devices.

When the iPhone (s aapl) was released with its feeble notes app, Evernote swooped in with its own much more fully featured app, which allowed even more users to tap into their service, and thus into their wallets.

Contenders or Pretenders

Here are a few services that show promise as they venture into paid subscription territory from the freemium universe. They originally hooked their users with totally free service, and only later announced their membership plans. Time will tell if they made the right move.

Jott emerged on the scene with an ambitious service that allowed its members to save their audio notes to the web via their mobile device. It also cross-posted to other services such as Twitter, Facebook and Remember the Milk. For the longest time it was free and in beta, then it announced its premium plans. There’s still a free plan but it’s extremely limited. Many members opted out, but many of them stuck around for one of the new paid plans.

Box also enticed members with free online storage but then later added premium plans with greater features such as larger file size for uploads (25 MB vs 1 GB, for example) and much more storage space (1 GB for free accounts vs. 30 GB for Business accounts).

While there are a slew of online storage services comparable to box.net (including some free ones with much larger storage), Box has wisely continued to innovate and has released many new features and options to make its service stand out. For example, its ability to work with your desktop applications as well as mobile devices is very handy. It has also released its own online apps to create documents and save them directly to your account.

Dropbox is another online storage service. It’s similar to Box but it does things a little differently. It provides the ability to automatically synchronize your files from multiple computers and provides twice the space of box.net for free accounts (2 GB). It also has premium accounts for far greater amounts of data.

Services That Will Start Charging Someday

Hulu is extremely popular these days. It remains free, but look for it to trot out some premium services soon. The companies behind it, NBC (s ge) and ABC/Disney (s dis), are no slouches when it comes to making a buck, so hold on to your wallets. Clear signs of its financial plans is the way it has thwarted boxee’s attempts to share its content with its user base. The message is “No pay, no play”.
Yes, even the red-hot popular media darling Twitter has been struggling with the subject matter of monetization. Its difficulties with discovering a way to make money have been analyzed to death by countless financial experts and business gurus. It has looked at charging users for premium services, implementing advertisements and charging third party services for access to its API. Ultimately, no one knows how Twitter will cash in on all of its recent media coverage. No matter what it does, they will become the perfect case study in courses for future web entrepreneurs.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, most sites will fail if they aren’t careful when it comes to charging for their services. Recession or not, there are only so many services anyone can pay for, no matter how slick the interface or how many bells and whistles they offer. However, they also need to conduct themselves as a business and find a way to pay the bills. At the end of the day, it’s always going to come down to a question quality of service and quantity of need.

Do you use mostly free services, or mostly pay? What factors help convince you that a service is in fact worth paying for?

<title>LA MUSICA DE TITO &laquo; eblog_de_pedro</title>
<p align="center"><embed src="http://www.box.net/static/flash/widget_player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" FlashVars="subString=folderId=s2oilbak9i,color=000000,title=LOS_MEJORES_DE_TITO" wmode="transparent" width="1024" height="800" target="_blank"></embed></p>

Cloud file storage app Box.net (previously covered on WWD) today announced some nifty new features

Cloud file storage app Box.net (previously covered on WWD) today announced some nifty new features that should prove useful, particularly if you’re a freelancer working with remote clients: Tasks, Global Folders and Custom Branding.

Tasks lets you assign tasks around files, which should be handy if you have a workflow that involves client approval of files or collaborating on files with others. For example, you can assign the task of reviewing a design right from within Box.net. For any file you can assign tasks to yourself, someone else or a group of people. By having this kind of functionality built into the app, you can keep the tasks together with the file itself, which should help avoid the kind of confusion that can result when assigning tasks via email.

Global Folders provides a simple way to publish files on the Internet, with just a few mouse clicks and no HTML fiddling required. You can take any of your Box.net folders and turn them into a publicly accessible web page with a customized, static URL.

Custom Branding lets Business edition subscribers customize the Box.net UI with their own branding, projecting a much more professional appearance when sharing files with clients.

What do you think of Box.net’s new features?

FileshareHQ, a new file-sharing and sending service that was launched today by UK design agency Slipstream Studio, joins a very crowded space, one currently occupied by the likes of Dropbox, box.net and YouSendIt. But FileshareHQ differentiates itself by targeting “pro users” — designers, web developers, photographers, video editors and the like — and offering FTP access to files, in addition to the usual web interface.

If you’re one of those pro users, this service should appeal to you for two reasons. You’re likely already using FTP for managing file uploads, so FileshareHQ should slot right into you workflow. You can use your favorite FTP app; you won’t need to download additional programs or have to deal with a web interface. And your less tech-savvy clients can access the files through an easy-to-use web interface. Plus, with a paid “Business” account you’ll have the option of branding the service, making it easy to create a professional-looking client area for your files.

FileshareHQ's web interface

FileshareHQ launched today with free accounts offering up to 1 GB of space, and a maximum of two users per account. Paid options should be available within the next seven days, offering more space and more users per account.

iPhone users will be able to view but not edit documents, workspaces using Soonr's application

Think of Soonr as Mozy (online backup) and Box.net (collaboration) combined.

First, you install Soonr software on a PC or Mac and start backing up your files on the Campbell, Calif.-startup cloud. Then you start sharing and collaborating, using an iPhone or almost any device (mobile or not) equipped with a Web browser.

“We refer it internally as A-B-C: access, backup and collaboration. Online backup is an enabler for the collaboration piece. Because, it’s just too hard to make money with just online backup,” confided Martin Frid-Nielsen, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Soonr.

Soonr will now charge for its service

Today’s release improves the collaboration piece with online workspaces, called Projects, that lets users organize and securely share files, print or fax (through a partnership with eFax) directly from their devices.

Version 3.0 also adds Universal search which can find documents with full text search across all computers and project folders. And the video playback functionality now supports most major video formats.

Despite keeping a free offering now called Soonr Lite which is limited to 5 online project workspaces and 2GB of combined storage space, Soonr will begin charging for its service, with its Soonr Premium and Pro accounts starting at $7.95 a month for more workspaces, users and storage.

“Advertising does not work with business users. But we are looking at other ways to generate revenue, like selling directly to enterprises and bundling the technology with hardware devices,” adds Frid-Nielsen.

The 5-year old and 25 employees startup which so far made its money in selling its service “white label” to operators worldwide is finally approaching profitability. Soonr has so far raised $20 million from Intel, Cisco and Clearstone. “Being in the cloud computing space right now, feels really good,” the executive jokes.

Do what you want ’cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate !

- Gallery Piece (Minitel Rose Remix), d’Of Montreal.

For those who need to save their files and share them on the cloud. Here is a list of free websites that offer online storage (some can sync our files across multiple computer without the need for individual downloads and uploads):

Box - Free 1GB storage, 5 collaborators and a limit of 25MB per file upload.

DropBox - Free 2GB storage, offers sync’ing.

ADrive – Free 50GB storage, simple storage and sharing capabilities, ability to edit documents online.

ZumoDrive – 1GB free storage, sync’ing, iPhone application.

MediaFire - Free and unlimited file storage, limit of 100MB per upload, upload different files to different folders and share them.

eSnips – Share files with people of the same interests, Youtube and Delicious meet files storage.

There are many more services to explore, but these are just a few that stand out to me. You can find more by simply going to a website like Go2Web20 and looking for the tag “storage”.

Have your own suggestions, please share them here.

I am also interested in the use of file storage services like these in learning contexts (at school, at work, when designing instruction, etc.), besides the obvious: there is no excuse for forgetting a document anymore and the ease to share any type of file with colleagues, classmates and instructors…

Song for Friends.mp3

I recently read a post in Doug Johnson’s eloquent Blue Skunk Blog about cloud computing that started me thinking more about this topic. Are you cloud computing? You’re probably doing some form of cloud computing without even realizing it. There are many different definitions of cloud computing, so whether you are cloud computing depends on who you ask. I like Doug’s definition, which is using the Internet for applications and file storage while using nothing on one’s own computer hard drive except a web browser. Ahhh…the freedom…like floating on a cloud. But I’m a little bit of a coward. Are my files really secure when I save them on the web? Really, really secure? For example, when I send messages via Gmail, I have noticed that Gmail’s sponsored links reflect topics I’m discussing in my email. Are they also scanning my Google docs or files I’m emailing to myself as part of my cloud computing start-up agenda? Suppose my docs contain details of an invention I’m trying to patent, and someone at Google steals my ideas? Call me paranoid, but cloud computing does involve an element of trust. But if you are a trusting soul, here are some baby step apps you may want to try:

Box.net | Simple Online Collaboration: Online File Storage, FTP Replacement, Team Workspaces ~ Free Version via kwout

First, for file sharing, and online saving, in addition to Google Docs, consider box.net and drop.io. These are great to recommend to your students who do not use flash drives to store their information, or who lose them fifteen minutes after purchasing them. Box will allow you to save files up to 25 MB, and will give you up to 1 GB of storage for free. You also get five collaboration folders that you can share with your colleagues–for your students, this could be a shared project. Box is like an online file box for all your important files to help you feel safe, secure, and organized. You can upload and download your files with no special software needed, and you can share files instantly with anyone. All you do is email your file to Box and they save it for you until it is needed. You can even host photos with no bandwidth limit. If you need more storage, there are paid versions available. If you aren’t sure the paid versions are worth it, you can try them out for free for two weeks.

With drop.io, you always get 100 MB “drops” for free. For $10 a year you get one drop (upload) and one GB of storage. For more money, you get more storage and more drops. You don’t even have to create an account or remember a user name and password as with most Web 2.0 sites. You do have to remember the location (URL) which you assign to your “drop” as the exchange points are called. The drops are private, and you determine how available you want them to be to others, such as students allowing access to teachers. All you do is name your drop; upload your file; decide whether or not to password protect the file; choose a date when you want the file to be deleted (tell your students, for example, to select a couple of weeks after their papers are due–don’t make it too early in case you give them an extension or they have to do a rewrite, or in case they get a reprieve from the governor!); then select an option of whether others can view; view and add; or view, add and delete. Now just hit the big red “Drop it!” button and your file is saved in lovely cyberspace. All you do is go back to your previously-named address (what–you didn’t forget that URL already, did you?) and open that file. What could be easier?

For photo sharing, may I suggest Flickr, Picasa, and Photobucket. Photobucket allows you to store up to 10,000 photos and hours of video for free. Picasa is a Google product that gives you one GB of free storage–about enough space for 4,000 wallpaper-size photos. Flickr is probably the most popular online photo storage site. It allows you to upload, edit, organize, and share your photos. It is also home to Flickr Creative Commons that provides copyright-friendly photos for our students to use in their school assignments, making it transparent to them how to give appropriate credit to the photo’s creator.

If you try these great Web 2.0 tools, you still won’t be completely in the clouds, but you’ll be on your way! In the meantime, check out Doug’s great blog and another great article from InfoWorld.
