sensitive to gender. Protect your cheeks. I’d self-
identify as a Cyclops. I’d buy a print for forty
copies of your stroll. Norman Rockwell will
have the special of the day. The boy likes to match
his hunting bag to the size of the copper’s
arm. The copper self-identifies with meat. You would
like the shiny chrome there. You would like
to spin on ink. Norman Rockwell broke the
black-board by scratching the teacher’s
face. The teacher broke the child by calling
it “boy.”

It’s Thanksgiving.  The time of year when we are supposed to reflect on all of the things we’re thankful for.

But sometimes, and maybe it’s just me, being thankful is hard.

With career, kids, husband and housework, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and start to take things (and people) for granted.

That’s why this Thanksgiving I’m focusing on being thankful for the little everyday things that I usually miss or dismiss because I’m too busy to notice.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very thankful for the big things–my health, my home, my family and friends–but I need to focus on the trees and not the forest.  The forest is too heavy for me right now.

So here’s my starter list for the day.  I’ll be adding to it via Twitter (@BeingSuper for you tweeps) throughout the day as all those wonderful little things pop up.

1.  I’m thankful that Non-Bio Daughter finally bought a car, so she doesn’t have to borrow mine anymore.  But for the love of Jesus honey, please slow down.

2.  I’m thankful that Boy! got his hair cut.  Now I can see his eyes and know what he’s up to.

3.  I’m thankful for Monkey’s nose.  It’s Michael Jackson-esque, always cold, perfect for kissing and a great source of entertainment at Steiner Haus.  I want to bite it.

4.  I’m thankful for Brent’s chest hair. Because you either dig the Magnum PI look or you don’t.  I totally dig it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

On Wednesday 18^th November, Foundation 1 and 2 visited the Post Office in Somersham. 

Earlier in the week, we had written individual postcards to Mr Peace. The children worked out what size of stamp their letter required and purchased the correct stamp over the counter. We met a postman and found out how our letters will get to Mr Peace. We watched him unlock the post box, collect our postcards and take them away in his van. We also met a postlady who was returning undelivered parcels and worked out what will happen to them. 

We have made our own post office in the classroom and are enjoying reliving all the things we saw on our visit.Thank you to all the parents who accompanied us and helped to make our visit a success.

Un et deux et trois …. You could hear the children of Year 3 practising their assembly and getting ready for their performance to parents on Wednesday 11^th November.  Leaving their classroom behind they headed to the school hall to show off to parents what they have been learning over the past few weeks. 

With loud, clear voices they told us all about their recent work in English lessons – nouns, prepositions and non-chronological reports – followed by Science. With pride, they showed off the work they had completed on Materials and Properties (last half-term’s topic) and the work that they have started on Food and Eating.  

Next, they sang two songs in French followed by a journey into the world of the Ancient Egyptians.  The children had recently visited the Fitzwilliam Museum and were now keen to put their knowledge into practice.  Daniel made a fine pharaoh and beautifully led his classmates as they took on various roles. 

A lot of hard work was put in by the children and they should be tremendously proud of their efforts.

We were very lucky at Gardening Club this week…Mrs Johnson brought in Snuffles the hedgehog! We found out all about Snuffles, how she was rescued and the food that she likes to eat. Snuffles was quite shy and she curled up into a ball when Mrs Johnson picked her up! 

We also met Sasha the rabbit! She loved exploring the classroom and we all had a turn stroking her.

On Wednesday 4^th November 2009, Mrs Peace and Mrs Burrow led an assembly about the Christmas shoebox appeal. We spoke to the children about why we take part each year, where the boxes go and what to put in the boxes. The children asked lots of questions about the children that they would be helping. We asked the children to cover the boxes in festive paper, then decide whether they were going to provide gifts for a boy or girl. 

The children managed to collect 62 boxes…a fantastic total! Thank you to all the children and parents for making such a difference to the lives of less fortunate children.

We started the day with all of the children and staff participating in a non-school uniform event. Everyone gave a donation of £1. 

Each class took it in turns to visit our huge drawing of Pudsey Bear and cover him with the pennies that we had brought in from home. By the time we had finished, we couldn’t see him! 

We are really happy that we were able to raise so much money…a grand total of £202. Well done everyone who took part!

It makes me remember those incredible first few days with Tom. (The first time I touched his skin, smooth as caramel. The first tim I unbuttoned his cotton shirt and felt the hard warmth of his chest. The first time he kissed me until my bones shook. The first time I kissed him until his blue-green eyes lost focus and turned slate gray.)

I’m reading a book by my Victorian literature professor over this short Thanksgiving break. It’s pregnancy based chick lit, but I kind of love it. I’m back in my old bedroom right now. I went to the high school this morning, and seeing my old teachers was fantastic. I’m not close with my professors now like I was last year. The one thing I was really looking forward to for this break, though, was seeing the boy, and hopefully going on a date with him. But now I’ve been diagnosed with fucking strep throat so I can’t do a thing. I’ll see him with a group on Friday, and then not again till May. God Fucking Damn. I realized that I don’t consider here home anymore. I consider school as my home. I’m happy there. It took me such a short amount of time to slip into my own ways- I found my way into my room and into my bed and I’m just not leaving. I hate this and I want to cry and this book is the only thing keeping me from doing so.

mhm, so today was successful – weather was cooperative – i experienced vegetarian cuisine for the very first time  - i stepped foot in washington park [?] – saw the big fountain – checked out the dog park across from it – i saw chubby little squirrels – took the path into jersey- watched christmas carol in 3d – and basically had a really good day, thanks

let’s see if this one’s a keeper – hmm.

i’ll be checking the mail for the next few days – i should have something coming in for ME!

This is a Thanksgiving staple at our house. The Boy usually makes it, but it was The Girl who first tried it out and made everyone fall in love with it. This recipe is very easy to make ahead of time. Just cook it about 80% of the way, then reheat it in a covered dish for about 20-30 minutes before serving. All props to the Barefoot Contessa and the Food Network. My favorite thing about this is that it manages to include heavy cream, butter, olive oil, and cheese without being the slightest bit ashamed of itself. Good stuff!

Ingredients:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Butter the inside of a 10-by-15-by-2-inch (10-cup) baking dish.

Remove the stalks from the fennel and cut the bulbs in half lengthwise. Remove the cores and thinly slice the bulbs crosswise, making approximately 4 cups of sliced fennel. Saute the fennel and onions in the olive oil and butter on medium-low heat for 15 minutes, until tender.

Peel the potatoes, then thinly slice them by hand or with a mandoline. Mix the sliced potatoes in a large bowl with 2 cups of cream, 2 cups of Gruyère, salt, and pepper. Add the sauteed fennel and onion and mix well.

Pour the potatoes into the baking dish. Press down to smooth the potatoes. Combine the remaining 2 tablespoons of cream and 1/2 cup of Gruyère and sprinkle on the top. Bake for 1 1/2 hours, until the potatoes are very tender and the top is browned and bubbly. Allow to set for 10 minutes and serve.
