There has been a heated argument for the last several years about when the world will start to run out of oil. The rate of oil production, after more than a century of drilling, may have already peaked or it may peak in a decade. Everything in oil production will be downhill after that.  The Observer recently pointed out that, “Even the Paris-based IEA admits that the world still needs to find the equivalent of four new Saudi Arabias to feed increasing demand at a time when the depletion rate in old fields of the North Sea and other major producing areas is running at 7% year on year.”

The supply of crude is based as much on technology as discovery. Huge pools of oil have been found off Brazil, in the Gulf of Mexico, and in the seas of western Africa. Technology may not be advanced enough yet to reach crude that is miles below the bottom of deep oceans.

The more relevant concern, at least in the short-term, about oil should not be how much there is but who will own it. The fight for crude ownership has picked up recently. Two decades from now there may be as much annual supply as there is this year, but the Chinese may have doubled or tripled their share of that market. The obstacle to that happening is that Western oil firms such as Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and BP (NYSE:BP) will get into bidding wars with China-based oil operations for new deposits but that bidding could become extraordinarily expensive.

A month ago, Exxon agreed to buy a stake of one-quarter in the Jubilee field in the ocean off Ghana for $4 billion. China oil company Sinopec (NYSE:SNP) and BP came in later bidding for the same ownership. The fight over a deposit which could turn out to be one of the largest in the world is likely to become more heated as the competition moves into next year.

China’s oil interests are busy in every region of the world where large new crude deposits are in the early stages of exploration and recovery. Early this year China Development Bank made a $10 billion loan to Brazilian oil company Petrobras to help it produce crude from its recently discovered deep-sea deposits. Sinopec will buy 150,000 barrels a day from Petrobras in the first year of their partnership and 200,000 barrels a day in the nine years after that as part of the deal.

Exxon and its smaller peers have access to capital and strong balance sheets. They will not be shut out of every bidding process and may win a reasonable number of the competitions. But, they do not have the treasury of the People’s Republic nor are they sovereign nations that can give developing or underdeveloped countries holding large oil deposits with forms of aid which may be political, military, or humanitarian.

China means to control the playing field when global crude supply peaks and other sovereign nations like the US and UK will not help the oil companies that are headquartered within their borders to offset China’s goal. That gives an immeasurably large benefit to the world most populous country.

If recent history has taught us anything (Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia etc.), it is that events like the recent technical default of Dubai World (owned by Nakheel) are not things that go away quickly and without widespread pain. Aside from the high-level macroeconomic effects involving the foreign exchange markets and capital outflows, there is a huge technical implication here (not to mention the damage this could do to other middle eastern and emerging markets economies and the associated moral hazard implications).

An extremely disproportionate amount of the market is short the dollar and an event like this could be exactly the kind of thing that would break down the trade and have huge implications on the equity markets, especially in the US. The S&P 500 has been extremely correlated to the movement of the US Dollar of late and a rise in the Dollar would very likely cause a drop in the market. There is also a possibility that the increased strain on budgets in the United Arab Emirates could put pressure on the price of oil as they consider increasing output for additional revenue.

A very big thing to watch will be the market’s reaction and perception to this news over the next couple of weeks as volume comes back in following the Thanksgiving holiday. It will also be very interesting to see how money managers will be reallocating to reposition themselves for 2010. Will the chase for performance continue or turn into a race for the exits?

On Saturday, the Associated Press reported that new testing by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has exposed the extent of pollution from a former Anaconda mine that was later inherited by BP subsidiary Atlantic Richfield. According to the agency testing, 79% of the six square miles of western Nevada copper mines are contaminated with dangerous levels of uranium and/or arsenic that threaten area drinking water supplies. In one well 10 miles north of the mine site, uranium was found at more than ten times the standard for drinking water.

BP and its Atlantic Richfield subsidiary, which bought the mine from Anaconda in 1978, initially denied that mining pollution is responsible for the water contamination, claiming that the problem is due to naturally occurring toxics from the mineral-rich Nevada mountains. In response to the new findings, the companies now acknowledge the mining pollution but suggest that the mine’s contribution to the drinking water contamination may be minimal.

In response to company claims that the pollution “…is mostly all natural,” Earle Dixon, the site’s former project manager for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), told the AP, “Well, no it’s not. We now know for a fact that most of this uranium as far as 2 miles out from the mine comes from the mine. This site becomes a poster child for mining pollution.”

Dixon raised the alert about the mining pollution in 2004, but was fired by BLM, which is responsible for the half of the site that sits on public land. In response, Dixon filed a whistleblower complaint under federal law, and last year, a federal panel vindicated his complaint, awarding him back pay and expenses.

The mining pollution started with Anaconda, which failed to line sulfuric acid ponds, allowing the toxic acid to leak into the ground. Decades later, tests found contaminants like uranium and arsenic in area wells. In 1979, the U.S. Geological Survey found arsenic, copper, iron and other contaminants 4,000 feet north of the site, and noted a deterioration in the quality of deep groundwater.

According to a 2006 report, in response to residents’ concerns, Atlantic Richfield would hand out free bottled water to homes where uranium threatened drinking-water. Former mine workers and area residents describe a litany of health problems they attribute to mining and its attendant pollutants. Tribal leaders from the Yerington Paiute band say that Native Americans on nearby tribal lands suffer from high rates of lung disease and other health issues.

Despite the company’s denials, earlier this year, Atlantic Richfield agreed to an EPA settlement of $10.2 million for clean-up at the site.

Craving Comfort

Some days, I roll out of bed, peel open my eyes, and stumble my way to my dresser, just to pull out, a fresh pair of PJ’s.  These are what I call bum days, we all have them… the days, you just want nothing but relaxation.  Then there are days, you want that comfort… but you can’t go out in PJ’s… those are the over sized sweater comfort days.  This season,  I have those a lot.  When I saw this sweater from Skin Flicks, which, coincidentally matches my favorite over sized sweater in real life, I knew it was meant to be… love at first SLight.

So, as this sweater adorns me … here, at my computer… I’ve put together a look for you … here, on my computer.  When my eyes fell on this shirt from BP, the bulging buttons and tiny little ruffles, I saw endless possibilities, this… being one of them of course.  Paired with my go to trousers from Armidi… just the right hues of heather and hints if silver are brought out.  These funny girl flats from Periquita are one of my favorite pair of fall back shoes here in SL.  They remind me of my favorite pair in RL, which, again, I happen to be wearing as we speak.  Smitten, made this adorable hanging heart pendant YEARS ago… though an oldie, it has been an active part of my inventory ever since!  These Genius glasses from Miel, which I’ve worn for a look of the day before… and will again… are so easily re-textured, re-sized, and fit to any AV, that glasses lovers like myself would be crazy not to own them.  Top it off with this simple chic hair from fri.day and you’ve got a comfortable ensemble to grace the grid (or otherwise) in any day!

For nine years a slow and painful discussion has been going on. The people of Gaza, oppressed and frustrated (over 70% of the population of the Gaza Strip are UN-registered refugees), have an offshore gasfield in their territorial waters estimated to be worth at least $4 billion.

In 1994, the Gaza–Jericho first agreement (withdraw of the Israeli Defence Force from Gaza) allocated the territorial waters of the coast of Gaza to an extent of twenty nautical miles as territory of the Palestinian Authority. However, the other side of the agreement was that Israel retain full security control over the area.

In 2000, British Gas, whose product I burn to keep warm here, discovered the Gaza Marine gasfield. British Gas received its licence to explore the Gazan coast not from its owners in accord with the 1994 agreement, but from the Israeli government. It looks like the Israeli government had timed things so that the gas exploration licence would be granted before formally handing the waters over to the PA, to keep Israel ‘in charge’ of the resources. Since the gas discovery, IDF gunboats (made in Britain) have been active in the waters, destroying Gazan fishing industry by forcing fishing boats to return home (as reported by Amnesty International: 15 fishermen killed, over 200 injured). It is clear that Israel considers that the gas is theirs.

British Gas originally wanted to link Gaza Marine by pipeline to Ashkelon on the Israel coast, already a hub for gas pipelines. The PA would have got some profit from the sale, but this would go to a not-so-accountable bank account in the favour of the Fatah presidency. In 2003, Ariel Sharon, as Prime Minister of Israel, vetoed the deal, fearing that independent income for the PA would fuel terrorism against Israel. In 2005, as Sharon was ‘disengaging’ from Gaza (but still besieging it), British Gas tried a different deal to link Gaza Marine to the Egyptian offshore gasfields. The deal progressed well, being a more ‘neutral’ option without direct Israeli involvement.

In 2006, the people of Gaza, unaware that democracy should be boring, ‘accidentally’ elected the ‘wrong party’, Hamas, to power in the PA. The US and EU condemned the Palestinian electorate for not voting for their preferred party — so much for ‘exporting democracy’! Ehud Olmert, Israeli PM, drew Tony Blair into an ‘attractive’ intervention on the issue. If the deal with Egypt were scuppered and the Ashkelon deal put back on the table, the Fatah presidency (the likely corrupt Palestinian party everyone else wanted to win) would be bound more closely with Israel and have the financial weight from the sale of gas to undermine Hamas. This intervention clearly fits with Blair’s neoliberal foreign policy: forcing the opening up of new economic markets, creating economic relationships as the basis for peace and security. Wider energy security policies were discussed, including using the Gaza pipeline to complete a circuit between Eilat on the Red Sea and the Baku–Tblisi–Ceyhan Trans-Caspian Pipeline (under BP leadership) from Turkey. Blair’s intervention worked, but British Gas pulled out of negotiations with Israel on a deal that would leave the PA being paid ‘in kind’ for its gas.

When in 2007, Tony Blair resigned as British PM and immediately became Middle East envoy for the Quartet with a special remit for the economic development of the Occupied Territories. Although on paper, he is committed to the development of the Wadi Arabah, it is more likely that the development of Fatah–Israeli symbiosis via the sale of Gazan gas was his top priority. British Gas were brought back into negotiations, and Israel began bargaining fast during its six months of preparation for the invasion of Gaza. The war, misunderstood by most global media, was about securing energy supply, just as the 2006 Lebanon war was timed to coincide with the opening of the Baku–Tblisi–Ceyhan Trans-Caspian Pipeline. Perhaps it’s no wonder that Blair was quiet about the invasion of Gaza. It has been almost a year, and British Gas, the Israeli government, Fatah and Tony Blair are ready to sit down and divest Gaza of its oil with minimal benefit to its compressed hordes. Meanwhile, Gazan fishermen are still being fired on by British-made IDF gunboats as they attempt to take the fish from the sea, one of the very few other natural resources of the Strip.

From now until the end of the year, each week Shane and I are going to take a famous couple (whether it’s fictional or not) , go off of their style, and incorporate it into our own for a joint post. Five months ago (I can’t believe this has only been going on for five months), Shane and I were searching for names for our new blog we were working on. We tried EVERYTHING when all of a sudden the name Les Girls spoke to us. It made sense at the time. We’re a couple both IRL and in SL and like most of our bisexual and lesbian friends, we would watch and discuss a show called The L Word. At the time when the show was first on, it was innovative. It was special. I’ve never seen a show that portrayed lesbian and bisexuals in such a way before. We were lawyers, writers, athletes, in the corporate world, everywhere. For me personally, the L word gave me the ability to accept myself for who I am and not be ashamed to love anyone whether it’s a male or female. It made me realize I’m not the only one out there and it is OK to be myself and love myself. The L Word meant something to us and thus Les Girls was a perfect name to give back in a way to a show that gave to us. Jennifer Schecter and Shane McCutcheon are two of our favorites. Despite the terrible ending, Shenny was a great testimony of friendship. And so for our first couple try if you will, Shane and I are going to attempt to bring Shenny back in a positive light and ignore the whole Jenny dying thing.

Shane says:
At one point, The L Word was deemed to be the change of television. I can’t lie, having gorgeous women on screen who fucked other women instead of overweight bulldogs was an exciting step for the LGBT community. No, it really was. As the years went on, the dialog got worse, the storylines became abysmal and far too many characters were created to fill the void of the biggest mistake in the writers’ professional lives. Throughout, Jenny Schecter was my favourite character. I hated her, but she was my favourite because of that, since I had slim to no opinion on a lot of the others. (What the hell were Mark or Max?) In season 2, Jenny was teamed up with Shane for what is deemed one of the best friendships for the series, and in season 6 that led to them getting together via the most ridiculous reasoning ever – Shane didn’t want to hurt Jenny. Don’t get me wrong, I was probably one of the only people who understood where Shane was coming from with it, but the relationship was too much too soon, and culminated in the pointless puzzle of Who Killed Jenny? All that said, their friendship was true, based on the both of them being as fucked up as each other, never striving for perfection. Team Shenny.

Black n0. 1 is a new to me skin store too. when i re-joined sl, i saw @ Free Style that there group was giving out a skin, and i liked it! the body is very well done so are the shades. the only thing i didnt like was the shadow on the chin and under it. overall its a beautiful skin. there are more tones available too, here i showed the dark tan!

On the first leg of their UK campaign tour, as part of the C Words season, powerful speakers Eriel Tchekwie Deranger, Heather Milton-Lightening and Melina Laboucan-Massimo of the Athabascan Chipewyan, Lubicon Cree and other indigenous communities tell it how it is. Also specifically, what we in Britain can do about this ongoing monstrous abuse of human rights and the environment.

The activists will give first-hand accounts of the devastating impacts of the massive oil extraction projects on indigenous communities. They will show how we as UK citizens are involved in these projects through companies such as Shell and BP, and the British financial system. Also how we can act to halt the Tar Sands and their impact on First Nations, the global climate and the forests and rivers of Canada.
