En junio se puso a la venta “Kaiku“, el segundo album de Kiki, productor finlandés afincado en Berlín y habitual del sello BPitch Control al que seguro que recordaréis por hits llenapistas como “Luv sikk” y por sus sesiones como DJ.
Kaiku es un buen LP del que se ha lanzado como maxi y con video incluido: “Good voodoo“, un track techno-house muy deep, con un bajo muy pegadizo y la voz de Chela Simone.
Ahora le toca el turno a “Immortal“, otro de los tres temas del album que incluyen voz. En esta ocasión la encargada es Pirica. Es la referencia 196 de BPitch Control.

BPC releases records by several powerhouse producers but Zander VT is new to me, thanks to the 10 Years sampler that has been in heavy rotation the last couple of weeks. there’s something very old school house about this which is highly appealing to me lately..

Fuckpony – Let the Love Flow (BPitch Control, październik 2009)

Jay Haze nagrywa pod wieloma pseudonimami (m.in. Dub Surgeon, The Architect), ale to projekt Fuckpony jest przez słuchaczy najbardziej doceniany. Chociaż jest właścicielem takich wytwórni jak Tuning Spork i Contexterrior, swoje liczne produkcje wydaje także w bardziej znanych labelach. Najnowszy album Fuckpony miał premierę w berlińskiej oficynie należącej do Ellen Allien – BPitch Control – która odpowiada dokładnie za takie brzmienie, z jakim spotkamy się na „Let the Love Flow”.

Oczywiście dominują tutaj utwory taneczne, które czasem przybierają formę tech-house’u, a niekiedy bardziej skręcają w rejony deep. Na najnowszej płycie Fuckpony usłyszymy melodyjne kawałki oparte na regularnym bicie 4/4, z towarzyszącymi im często zręcznymi sekwencjami ozdobnych perkusjonaliów.

Otwierający utwór, odrobinę kwaśnymi nutami i swobodną perkusją powoli wprowadza nas do tanecznej zawartości płyty. Już w „I’m Burning Inside” zderzymy się z błuszcącymi loopami, klawiszami zatopionymi w pogłosach oraz z nastrojowymi, ale minimalnymi partiami śpiewu. „I Know It Happened” rozwinie ów śpiew w pełni, więc usłyszymy przyjemny kobiecy głos, do wtóru którego rozbuja nas popiskującą melodia. Kwaśnawe klawisze powrócą w „Real Love Is Forever”, przypominając produkcje Luomo. Jay Haze nie boi się też użyć dźwięczącego pianina ani zmysłowego wokalu, na przykład „A Pills Medley” lub mniej klubowy „You Can’t Touch but Feel Free to Look”, co z miejsca kojarzy się z estetyką deep house.

„Let the Love Flow” jest zgrabną, taneczną płytą, która sprawdzi się nie tylko na parkiecie. Takie z zasady są produkcje sygnowane marką BPitch Control, mają nie tylko bawić, ale także wpadać w ucho i zwyczajnie podobać się. Najnowsze dzieło Fuckpony potwierdza regułę.

Aunque Modeselektor (Gernot Bronsert y Sebastian Szary), publicaron su último album “Happy birthday” hace más de dos años, es ahora cuando ve la luz el video de uno de sus tracks: “Deboutonner” que ha sido realizado por Bruno Levy utilizando miles de fotografías que él mismo tomó en un viaje a Patan en Nepal y añadiendo efectos y flashes con un resultado asombroso. Júzguenlo ustedes.
Este video me ha llegado a través del canal de Youtube de BPitch Control, el label de Ellen Allien.
Por cierto, en este album de Modeselektor, venía incluído uno de los mejores temas de 2007 y que me sigue poniendo la piel de gallina: “The white flash” con la voz de Thom Yorke de Radiohead.
Esperemos que Modeselektor publique material nuevo lo antes posible, ya tengo ganas de nuevos tracks.

Telefon Tel Aviv @ The Bell House, Friday Sept. 11th

Telefon Tel Aviv played before a half-moon shaped crowd last Friday night at The Bell House — unfortunately, the room was half empty also. My boyfriend, who was three-quarters ejaculating at the chance to finally see this band, called foul when Telefon lead man Joshua Eustis started singing. Apparently, my boyfriend best knew TTA in 2001 as a vocal-free blip and blop beat wonder, and he took it to heart that their newest BPMs vulgarly hit 120 and Eustis was clouding each jam with incoherent man singing. However, their 2004 disc, Map of What is Effortless, put out by Chicago electronica label Hefty Records, is characterized by a midtempo glitchy R&B sound with trading male and female vocals, so their current sound should be unsurprising for Telefon acolytes. If you hadn’t paid attention to TTA for the last seven years, you wouldn’t recognize the band of last Friday night — which I think most bands would find flattering.

Nevertheless, TTA’s beats were still sexy, even as the Bellhouse scene was a little too well dressed for sexy. The songs they played from their newest disc, Immolate Yourself, a disc released earlier this year in January on Ellen Allien’s German label BPitch Control, all had a bleary-eyed ambiance to them. Sonically, they seemed referential to uncomfortable mornings, insomnia, or night sweats. The message of the set seemed to project an ambiguous darkness, which given the quizzical death of former band founder Charles Cooper, could have been intended. A picture of a sweaty note on their Myspace page says, “with this song you’ve managed to musically describe the female orgasm. Nice fuckin’ job!” This sentiment seems to capture a previous blithe era of the band, and although it is likely that many still climax to TTA, it seems solemnity and “realness” are a new priority for Eustis’ project.

BPitch Control ist ein 1997 von Ellen Allien gegründetes Plattenlabel in Berlin. Auf internationaler Ebene werden, neben anderen Labels die BPitch Releases als spezifisch für Berlin Techno wahrgenommen.

Jay Haze – homme fatale, madman, exceptionally gifted composer and producer, owner of labels TuningSpork and Contexterrior, and mastermind behind numerous other musical projects – has done it again. The big surprise. Something no one expected. After two singles (plus remixes for Telefon Tel Aviv and Kiki), Jay brings Fuckpony back to the BPitch stable, offering a full-length album with intentions no less than world dominance.

Sure, house music has always been king, but even if (as these days) some poser waiting around the corner claims his name is Jack, the subtly-trained ear can hear the difference, and the wheat is separated from the chaff. And instead of coasting comfortably off the success of his recent Fabric47 mix CD, Jay strikes again with what may be his most mature, cohesive artistic statement yet.

Hardly anyone knows the legacy of American-style house as Mr. Haze does. Despite a sense of tradition, this guy’s intention was never just to reproduce a well-known sound. His nonconformist principle has always been a recurring theme throughout his diverse projects as he crosses given boundaries. Futurism as a conceptual basis and Chicago as grammar, but even a bit more special than what is currently being rehashed with these ideas.

And what Jay as Fuckpony has always excelled at is opening up to – what one would call commonly and from a distance – “pop”. Pop in the best sense, though: as an abstraction of accessibility, one that strikes your cheek gently while scraping stubble. The slightly shifted, forward-driven syncopation in the title track “Let The Love Flow” would be a prime example. Angular, sharp-edged pop, on whose surface you could light a match – so much soul is pushing through that the dancefloor seems like it is about to collapse. But it won’t, because “Let the Love Flow” doesn’t become a pure dance album, at least not in its entirety. Instead Haze meanders into a strange realm somewhere between the gleam of Saturday night (like in the track “Orgasm On The Dancefloor On A Saturday Night”) and the pale daylight of a Sunday morning (as in “A Pill’s Medley”). The listening experience provides a sort of afterhours party for lovers, only that here the sweet taste of the club never dissolves away from the tongue. Everything stays positive here: despite the high altitude, Fuckpony lands in the crate softer than ever, with house tracks that resurrect old feelings, but despite all the grace and emotion, kick sharply with a super-tight bass drum. A collection of small epics that are never for a second flat or cheesy, despite their catchiness.

Because this album seems to be so sentimental and tender, it almost sounds as if Jay Haze has discovered his feminine side on BPitch Control. You could call it house with heart, an entire album without samples, made from scratch with his own two hands. The horns, the drums, and of course the dominating piano – all of these emanate from the mad spirit of the master, sustaining his genius, his unmistakable handwriting ever present. Only the vocals in “Fall Into Me” and “I Know It Happened” are not sung by Haze himself, but rather by Laila Tov and Chela Simon. The latter has already lent her voice to Kiki’s “Good Voodoo”, and her contributions to this album offer a few soulful moments, instantly making your arm hairs stand on end.

Yes, it comes full circle- Fuckpony’s long-player for ravers in love and for raved out lovers who are still going long after peak time. A self-contained album with powerful melodic arches and a great dramatic underscoring of house, embedded in tradition but not dwelling on the past. Ten tracks, each unique and self-sufficient, held together through love: the love of music, of house, of Berlin, of parties, of all of you out there. So in this sense, love it also! Real love is forever…

es ist die klassische karriere, eine karriere wie man sie aus der “pop-industrie” für den massengeschmack kennt. es ist die wundervolle kurzweilige blüte eines künstlers, der anfangs nicht beachtet, weil unbekannt – später verachtet weil omnipräsent. kriegt der kalki die kurve?

so auch der wirklich existierende charakter aus dem mitfühlenden film berlin calling. sehenswert ist er allemal, gerade auch berliner clubgänger sehen altbekannte orte die, diesmal schön ausgeleuchtet, aus der perspektive eines dritten, oder auch zum ersten mal nüchtern betrachtet, aussehen wieder jeder x-beliebige industriebrache. aber dann bricht der protagonist aus der fantasie der leinwand aus und springt auf die decks der clubs, auch und gerade auf solche wo man ihn vorher nicht kannte.

das der film eine mischung aus 0 8 15 geschichte und normalen berliner nächten ist, dürfte kaum überraschen einzig und allein erstaunlich ist der erfolg dieses films. kaum gezeigt, nur in programm kinos und sehr wenigen multiplexen in ganz deutschland ist der film mittlerweile unter jungen leuten einschlägig bekannt. die bekanntheit geht nun auf den real-existierenden dj über, der sich im film die meiste zeit nur selbst spielen dürfte, und nicht auf einen schlag – aber doch innerhalb eines frühjahrs und sommers eine erstaunliche karriere hingelegt hat, wie es sie bislang selten gab in der europäischen techno szene. gerade auch mit dem abzug der love parade aus berlin, spielte diese musikrichtung in der letzten zeit nur eine untergeordnete rolle – zumindest in der medialen wahrnehmung.

nun ist er berühmt der “kalki” – gibt interviews in “die welt” und spielt auf vielen festivals (melt, grünanlage ….) und mutiert zum start der szene. nun dröhnt er aus den getunten audis in der dresdner innenstadt, aus den kopfhöreren derjenigen die wie peter fox so schön singt “auf der suche nach der szene” sind.

paul kalkbrenner wird seine alten fans nur halten können, wenn er nachlegt – weitere gute tracks spielt wie zum beispiel der durchaus gelungene “mad world” remix auf seiner berlin calling tour. wahrscheinlich wird es sich aber einfach nur zukoksen, sich ein paar fehler auf der bühne leisten und die menschen, die ihn bislang noch gut fanden gehen weiter.

Verwalter unzähliger Labels, Projekte und Pseudonyme, hat es wieder getan. Der
Sprung ü’9fbern eigenen Schatten.

Den Schritt, den niemand erwartet hätte… Immer
noch recht frisch in der BPITCH Familie, längst jedoch ein alter Hase im Geschäft,
präsentiert er nun unter seinem poppigen Alter Ego FUCKPONY einen mächtigen
Longplayer, der es auf nicht weniger abgesehen hat, als die Weltherrschaft. Klar,
House ist eh King, aber gerade wenn – wie dieser Tage – an jeder Ecke einer lehnt,
der von sich behauptet, sein Name sei Jack, lernt das geübte Ohr wieder nuancierter
zu unterscheiden und die Spreu vom Weizen zu trennen.
Mit dem Erbe von House amerikanischer Prägung kennt sich schließlich kaum jemand
so gut aus wie Mr. Haze. Für diesen Knaben konnte es trotz allen Traditionsbewusstseins
nie allein darum gehen, Altbekanntes zu reproduzieren. Sein Prinzip war stets – und
das zieht sich tatsächlich als roter Faden durch die Mannigfaltigkeit seiner Projekte
– die Überschreitung des Gegebenen. Futurism als konzeptuelle Grundlage und
Chicago als Grammatik, aber eben immer eine Spur spezieller als das, was derzeit
unter diesem Begriff wieder aufgewärmt wird.

Und was Jay als FUCKPONY eben auch schon immer auszeichnete, ist die Öffnung
hin zu dem, was man gemeinhin und aus der Entfernung als Pop bezeichnen möchte.
Pop im besten Sinne allerdings. Pop als Abstraktion einer Zugänglichkeit, die einem
zwar sachte über die Wange streicht, dabei jedoch über Stoppeln kratzt. Der leicht
versetzte, perfekt nach vorn schiebende Offbeat im Titeltrack „Let The Love Flow“
wäre so ein Fall. Eckiger, kantiger Pop, an dessen rauer Oberfläche man sich ein
Streichholz anzünden kann, weil ihm so viel Soul in den Rücken drückt, dass er einem
fast vornüber auf die Tanzfläche zu fallen droht. Aber eben nur fast, denn ein reines
Dancealbum ist es nicht wirklich geworden, jedenfalls nicht ganz und gar. Stattdessen
mäandert Haze in einem eigentümlichen Reich der Mitte zwischen den gleißenden
Blitzen von Samstagnacht (wenn ein Track schon „Orgasm On The Dancefloor On
A Saturday Night“ heißt) und dem bleichen Tageslicht eines Sonntagmorgen, wenn
das Erlebte den Rücken nach unten vibriert, während die Bassdrum immer leiser
nachhallt („A Pill’s Medley“). Eine Afterhour für Verliebte quasi, nur dass hier auf
die Süße kein fahler Geschmack nach Club auf der Zunge folgt. Hier bleibt alles
positiv: Trotz Höhenflug landet FUCKPONY die Kiste weicher denn je in Housetracks
der eher emotionalen Art, unter denen trotz aller Grazie eine ungemein tighte
Bassdrum kickt. Eine Sammlung kleiner Epen, die sich trotz aller Catchyness keine
Sekunde flach oder cheesy gebären. Aber kann es in diesen zynischen Zeiten nicht
auch mal möglich sein, aufrichtig Gefühle zu kommunizieren, ohne dass gleich alles
mit einer relativierenden Geste abgeschwächt wird? Also wirklich…

So heißt das gute Stück im Ganzen dann auch„Let The Love Flow“ und selbst die
Einzeltitel fügen sich in diesen Tenor, so dass sich jedes weitere erklärende Supplement
erübrigt. Denn, ja, so gefühlvoll und zart, wie einem das hier vorkommen mag, klingt
das dann auch tatsächlich und es scheint fast, als habe Jay Haze hier auf BPitch nun
auch seine feminine Seite entdeckt. House mit Herz nennt man das… Dabei ist das
gesamte Album gänzlich ohne Loops und Samples aus seiner eigenen Hände Arbeit
entstanden. Die Bläser, die Drums und natürlich das durchgehend dominierende Piano
– alle Ideen entsprangen dem mindestens so genialen wie wahnsinnigen Geiste des
Meisters und tragen trotz der ästhetischen Neuorientierung noch immer dessen unverkennbare Handschrift. Einzig und allein die weiblichen Vocals in „Fall Into Me“

und „I Know It Happened“ hat er nicht selbst eingesungen, dafür gab es ja schließlich
Laila Tov oder Chela Simone. Letztere lieh ihre Stimme ja bereits Kiki’s „Good Voodoo“
und sorgt auch hier auf den zwei Stücken für ein genreberstendes Soulmoment, das
einem vom ersten Moment an die Armhärchen aufstellt.

Ja, eine runde Sache ist es geworden, FUCKPONY’s Longplayer für verliebte Raver
und verravte Liebende, die sich auch noch nach der Peaktime gerne haben. Ein in
sich geschlossenes Album mit mächtigen Melodiebögen, großen Dramaturgien und
einem Understatement von House, das sich in Traditionen einzubetten versteht, um
sich in der gleichen Bewegung von diesen abzuheben. Zehn Tracks, jeweils einzigartig
und selbstgenügsam für sich stehend, beleuchten eine Seite an Jay Haze, die ihn fast
schon in den Stand eines favorisierten Schwiegersohnes hebt. Zehn Tracks,
zusammengehalten durch die Liebe zur Musik, die Liebe zu House, zu Berlin, zur
Party, zu euch allen da draußen. In diesem Sinne: Liebet auch ihr! Real love is
forever…

Biography:

Ellen Allien  (real name Ellen Fraatz) is a German born DJ/producer (b. 1978) who currently runs her own label “Bpitch Control” from Berlin.

Ellen begin her musical industry career during the early 1990’s as a DJ in various clubs and bars in Berlin, and in 1993 she hosted her own radio show at Kiss-FM. Much of her earlier music represents her experiences in Germany during the period in which the Berlin Wall came down (in 1989) and the transformation in which a unified culture emerged, with of course dance music. Her current label “Bpitch Control” was set up in 1999 and artists such as Sascha Funke and Tok Tok as well as her own music continue to make the label a success.

Allien has released 5 major albums and has various remix projects under her belt (including Beck, Thom York remixes).

Ellen also has her own fashion label and in January 09’ released her spring/summer collection.

Sool (2008) – Album Review

Ellen Allien’s newest album Sool  is a striking minimal compliment to her previous upbeat techno electronica based works. The album takes you on a dark and mysterious sonic journey that begins with boarding an outward bound train in Berlin in Einsteigen (meaning  “to board”).

Allien subtly takes you from the urban encounter into the magical wilderness through the quiet whispering soundscapes and the pulsating beats of Elphine.  She continues to build the intensity through Bim and Its  where her previous techno rhythmic influences are evident. Out is the final track that concludes the journey with compelling atmospheric icy sounds combined with her synthesised vocals.

Filled with contrasting  murky and chilling atmospheric elements, this album has been cleverly constructed with minimal melodic  form but is hypnotizing with its  pulsating rhythms and ability to allure you from your everyday life to a fantasy world of your own.

When it comes to choice collaborative albums, Sascha Ring, aka Apparat, has form. In 2006, the German electronic musician got together with Ellen Allien, the producer, DJ and BPitch Control label boss, to make the sublime Orchestra of Bubbles, and here he is repeating the trick with another titan of German electronica, Berlin duo Modeselektor. Moderat, as the trio have called themselves, can be traced back to 2002 when they released a solitary EP, but it’s not until now that an album has appeared. In the intervening years, both acts’ stocks have risen enormously – Apparat with Orchestra of Bubbles and then his third solo album, 2007’s excellent Walls, and Modeselektor with the patronage of celebrity fan Thom Yorke, who sang on their breakthrough record Happy Birthday! and invited them to tour with Radiohead. And the Moderat album has turned out much as you might expect, even with high hopes.

The self-titled debut is a modern techno record in keeping with their label’s fine history, with Apparat contributing the flair for detail and lush sound design that has become his trademark. But there’s also that sense of fun that Modeselektor are known for, and a deep, bass-heavy theme that indicates that the trio have been listening to their fair share of dubstep and dub techno lately. Rhythm and Sound vocalist Paul St. Hilaire makes an appearance on the frantic ‘Slow Match’, while ‘Rusty Nails’ and the closing ‘Out Of Sight’ ally Ring’s ethereal vocals to the depth charge bass and brittle beats of Burial. The trio are touring heavily throughout the summer; you’d be well advised to add the nearest date to your diary – they might just disappear for another seven years.

W piątek 15 maja we wrocławskim kinie “Warszawa” odbył się przedpremierowy pokaz filmu “Berlin Calling” Hannesa Stoehra (polska premiera 5 czerwca), gdzie w roli didżeja coraz mocniej odjeżdżającego w psychotyczne jazdy wystąpił Paul Kalkbrenner ze stajni BPitch Control, dla której nagrywa też chociażby Ellen Alien. Kalkbrenner, który grał 3 lata temu na Audioriver w Płocku, stworzył mocną ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu Stoehra, dzięki której “Berlin Calling”  trzyma muzyczny poziom.

Film to trochę efemeryda łącząca “Lot nad kukułczym gniazdem” z “Trainspotting”. Przystaje jednak mocno do berlińsko-klubowych realiów, dzięki czemu jest bliski także wielu polskim klaberom, co widać było na wrocławskim pokazie. Świecące zazwyczaj pustkami wielkie kino “Warszawa” w piątkowy wieczór wypełniło się po szwy , a nad fotelami strzelały kapsle od piwsk. Zjawili się dyżurni lokalni imprezowicze i pokaz okazał się mieć charakter biforku przed długą nocą.

One of most relevant record labels of electronic music world over born in Berlin by Ellen Allien BPitch Ctrl , it’s touring the planet celebrating the 10th year with ace names.

In order to celebrate the occasion, Ellen will joined by various artists from the label for shows in Germany and the Netherlands later this month, with another date planned to coincide with next month’s Sonar festival in Barcelona. Kiki and Thomas Muller will kick things off with their respective live sets at Leipzig’s Distillery on Wednesday 20th May, while the Eindhoven date ten days later sees Kiki get the boot in favour of BPitch’s moustached mango man Sascha Funke. Allien, Funke and Kiki will all be present at BPitch’s off-Sonar party at Nitsa on June 20th, and they’ll be supported by a live set from Telefon Tel Aviv, and a DJ set from actual Tel Aviv resident Chaim.

The final leg of the BPitch birthday tour sees the gang return to Leipzig for the Melt! Festival, where they’ll take over the Big Wheel stage on the Saturday. As well as all of the usual BPitch crew, Allien has roped in DJ Hell, James Holden, Tobias Thomas, Matias Aguayo and Innervisions’ A Critical Mass live show to help her celebrate. As if that wasn’t enough, the following day will see BPitch carry on the party on the Sleepless Floor, going all the way through from 7am to 2pm on Monday with the help of Dinky, Ruede Hagelstein and Panorama Bar resident nd_baumecker amonst many others.
