Remember the pride edition necklace and bracelet that I did a while ago? I used Swarovski faux pearls, in very pastelish, candy colours. I got a buyer expressing interest and suggesting that I tried out other colour schemes, so here goes!

The pearls came in very nice dark colours, but they didn’t seem to go very well together. In the end I just picked out the shades of grey and this very dark teal-ish colour. I think it adds a very subtle pop of colour as compared to just rendering it fully grayscale. Love the mysterious, sombre mood created by the colours!

And I love the gradient effect going on. I guess because the pearls are quite reflective, each pearl takes on a tint of the pearl that’s beside it.

I had so much fun shopping for the pearls! It was insane! I could have easily bought them in every colour, but damned, I’m running on such a tight budget. Anyways, I also made an accompanying bracelet in the same colour scheme.

I’m personally not into matchy-matchy necklace-bracelet combinations because I believe you simply have to just pick ONE focal/statement area. But that’s just me. I like contrast. Matchy-matchy could probably work if done right, too. After all, it’s all about how you make it work.

OMG, the bracelet. TO. DIE. I love this so much. So cosmic! Like planets in orbit. The pearls do work very well in bracelets because they roll on your skin like butter.

Then I created a red piece too. Couldn’t get them in more shades of red, but at least the powder pink, burgundy and maroon works quite well together. (The maroon looks a little chocolatey in the photo though. Hmm…) This piece is PERFECT for Chinese New Year. It’s so auspicious. I hope the wearer, whoever it may be, gets good fortune from wearing this. Haha!

Really love working with the faux pearls! I’m definitely going to continue using them. This series here is just the beginning. I look forward to creating more faux pearl pieces.

But is it a keeper…

I dont know why – when I started out the colors and the pattern seemed like the perfect match, but now I’m “done” and only need a clasp … And all of the sudden I’m not sure anymore.

This bracelet is a gift from one of my friends. He had bought it from the budist monks in Ulan Ude, Russia. He said that he and the monks have blessed it by bathing it in vodka and left in a temple for one day, and he had drunk vodka with monks along the blessing process

The final charm in my Thanksgiving series dedicated to those I love,  is my signature charm, a ladybug or “joaninha”.  I lead a charmed life in many ways (if you backtrack over the last 6 days, you’ll read why), so I felt like I deserved a place on the chain as well:

The placement of each of these charms was not accidental.  Neither was the fact that I designed fully 3-dimensional charms.  I wanted the charms to be beautiful seen from whatever angle they fell when the bracelet was worn.  And, while my husband’s “Pisces” and my ladybug charms are stationed at opposite ends of the chain when the bracelet is open, when clasped together we are side by side again.

All my gratitude and thanks go to the friends, family and kindly strangers who have made such a difference in my life.

I’ve naively wondered why my husband is a Pisces when he’d rather be eating meat than fish; furthermore, water, whether it be for swimming or showering, has to be precisely a certain temperature before he’ll even test it with his little toe.   Since he didn’t come with a manual when we got married, I’ve learned how to combine my sign (Taurus) with his somewhat by trial and error, the school of hard knocks, and lots of love (which has always been reciprocated equally.)  Today I researched Pisces for this post and had one of those “ah ha” moments.

Traditional Pisces traits are:

Imaginative and sensitive

Compassionate and kind

Selfless and unworldly

Intuitive and sympathetic

On the dark side…

Escapist and idealistic

Secretive and vague

Weak-willed and easily led

While I won’t reveal which of these traits jumps off the page at me most, I will say that my husband is one of the kindest, gentlest, and most compassionate creatures inhabiting my earth.

My father, who often comes across as very serious (degrees in law and music, a European upbringing, and years spent teaching as a professor in academia certainly foster that image), has a very impish side as well.  He has played his share of practical jokes on his family, and I never tire of hearing of the funny escapades he had with his Portuguese nephews and nieces when they were little.

One of my favorite stories?

One summer when the family was traveling to the south of Portugal to vacation, he stationed each little nephew and niece at one of the windows in the train compartment.  When the train rolled into the stations along the way, he coached them all to yell out the windows to each other (in Portuguese), “Oh no! you spilled the wine!”, “Pass the chicken!”, and other such rowdy comments.   Like this, he insured that the family had the entire train compartment to themselves for the trip!

Again a bracelet inspired by Silver Parrot’s cool challenge (even though it’s now over), and again without any of my handmade polymer clay beads. I think I like the soft pastel colours of this one. Inspired by the Luna Moth (Actias luna) in this picture:

I know that the shade of green is very different, but I’ve seen many Luna Moth pictures that had more the shade of green that you can see in the jade beads above. I’ve never seen one of these in reality, as they only live in North America, but they sure are beautiful animals, whatever their real colour is.

Constituant le plus grand rassemblement humain annuel, le pèlerinage à la Mecque est placé cette année sous la crainte de la pandémie de grippe A. L’Arabie Saoudite a donc pris des mesures pour éviter la propagation du virus. Samedi les autorités sanitaires ont annoncé les décès de quatre pèlerins, liés à la grippe H1N1. A la menace sanitaire, se sont ajoutées de fortes pluies et inondations, qui ont provoqué hier la mort d’au moins 13 personnes.

Une Marocaine, un Soudanais et un Indien, tous trois âgés de 75 ans, ainsi qu’une Nigériane de 17 ans sont décédés de la grippe A, alors qu’ils s’apprêtaient à faire le Hadj. Deux d’entre eux présentaient des facteurs de risque de complication. Jusque-là, les autorités sanitaires n’ont recensé qu’une soixantaine de cas de contamination, un bilan très inférieur à ce que redoutait l’Arabie Saoudite.

“Je suis très confiant. J’ai confiance en l’équipe du ministère de la santé, en nos réserves et en nos infrastructures qui sont suffisantes”, a indiqué le ministre de la santé, Abdullal Abdul-Aziz Al-Rabeea. En effet, le pays a pris d’importantes dispositions pour limiter la transmission de la grippe A. Ainsi, près de 20 000 personnels médicaux sont mobilisés et un million et demi de doses d’antiviraux sont stockées. Par ailleurs, des caméras thermiques ont été placées aux points d’arrivée des pèlerins : à l’aéroport et au port de Djeddah. Enfin, le parcours du Hadj est marqué par des ambulances et des équipes médicales mobiles.

En raison du contexte pandémique, l’Arabie Saoudite a également imposé le report du pèlerinage aux personnes à risque. En théorie, les visas ne devaient pas être délivrés aux personnes les plus fragiles : femmes enceintes, enfants de moins de 5 ans, personnes atteintes de maladies chroniques et personnes âgées de plus de 65 ans.

Le cinéaste va être assigné à résidence en attendant son extradition vers les Etats-Unis…
