Django and Emile, eating foods taken from garbage.

For me, Ratatouille is easily the best movie. This is Brad Bird’s best yet. Its plot is very simple, yet brilliant when it’s mixed up with the idea of a rat who got what it takes to be the best chef. I also fall in love with the animation. It’s fantastic. The objects texture, the drawings, the furs. Not to mention, the best angles and composition yet in an animation movie. It’s just so colorful, detailed and alive. I was like watching moving paintings, which is so full of art sense. Even you may be overwhelmed by just watching how the rat’s heart beats.

The story is one of the most original scripts. It’s very solid with humor that’s not pushed over the limit. It’s classic in many other ways. The character development is also one of the best in Pixar’s. The director once again succeeds to build characters that are gray, not the typical black or white characters as seen on many other children movies. And I’m personally in love with Remy! Remy is talk-active, smart, enthusiastic, passionate, perfectionist, but also a bit cocky, pushy, crafty.

Remy’s father, Django is against the idea of getting too close to humans. From his point of view, humans are dangerous. But Remy thinks the other way. Humans are interesting. “They create,” said Remy. Having the differences in opinions, Remy often has fights with his father. I still remember how Django warned Remy of how dangerous the human world is for rats.

Django: This is the way things are. You can’t change nature.
Remy: Change is nature, Dad. The part that we can influence. And it starts when we decide.

(This is the part when Remy turns to leave Django)

Django: Where are you going?
Remy: With luck, forward.

Remy’s so rich and natural in his character. For me, he’s also one of the best Disney’s character because of his heroic thing. There aren’t many Pixar’s movies who have the identical ideation as other previous Disney’s character, but Remy has it. From time to time, Disney’s characters always tend to be different and be something or someone that stands out in the crowd, and against all odds. And that idea of being different is brilliantly drawn in Remy, that I don’t see also being drawn that brilliantly in any other Pixar’s character (except maybe WALL-E).

Remy's watching Gusteau in TV, while holding a small jar of saffron. I love this frame so much cause it shows perfectly how much passion Remy has to create new things. It inspires me to do the best with my talents.

I also love Emile. He’s with his tummy is so cute. And speaking about cuteness, the rest of the rats are also very cute, with their tiny bright sparkling eyes. Yes, as I said, if you speak about the animation; the camera angle, the composition, the artworks of the movie are the best ones amongst all Pixar’s movies. It’s just so artistic and delightful.

The quality of the animation is well accompanied with the warming music from The Incredible and Up’s Michael Giacchino. Even besides, the sound editing is very good. All the characters seem to fit the voices. I love how Patton Oswalt voices Remy. Just perfect. Or how Ian Holm voices Skinner. Fantastic.

(The parts below contain spoilers)
But above all the praises, what I like most from the movie is the second half part of the movie which I think, excels in many ways. You are first offered the feel of happiness when Linguini officially owned the restaurant and fired Skinner. Then all of a sudden, there are lots of conflicts like when Remy couldn’t accept the fact that Linguini started to deny his capability, over Colette, Linguini’s girlfriend. It continued as when Remy brought the whole colony to steal foods, that made Linguini really disappointed and said harsh words to him and kicked him away out of the kitchen.

Remy and Linguini figuring out what way they can work together nicely making dishes.

All of the desperation continued when all the gourmet employees quitted their job when they think that Linguini was out of his mind for trusting a rat, and even Colette walked away from him. It’s all in the night when it was the most important night for them and Gusteau’s. Gladly, Colette is an important character so she’s brought back to the whole ending scenes, along with the movie essensial slogan “anyone can cook” which she had believed from the very beginning.

And after all the desperations, out of nowhere, Django gently spoke to Remy in a very fatherly way. And boom! This is the part I’m talking about. It’s when the rats colony get into the kitchen and help to cook. Wow! The feeling I got when watching this part is just overwhelming. Now I can see why they call themselves “a family” and am just so excited to see Remy walked around the kitchen and tasted all the sauces, the cookings and said words such as, “good, too many salt, good”. It’s just so entertaining and at the same time, inspiring. That part is also so hilariously funny, if not the funniest part of the movie. Like when the health inspector got tied up by the rats. LOL.

Linguini and Collette start getting into each other. This is the point where Remy starts to feel he's left behind.

And speaking about this part, it’s concluded with the best ending yet, when Remy cooks Ego ratatouille and afterwards, Ego makes a review about it. The review is really breath-taking.. It speaks about the morality of a critic itself which I think is really genius. How can you criticize a movie that’s concluded with something speaking about the work of a critic itself?

In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends.

Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto: “Anyone can cook.” But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau’s, who is, in this critic’s opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau’s soon, hungry for more.

Those lines from Anton Ego are amazing. Peter O’toole just speaks it right, in a perfect manner. Spoken along with the movie’s main theme which is so melodious and romantic, with the sound of accordion and strings, the scene really touched me in a way I could never imagine. I cried (and heavily) when it came to this part. And after watching it 27 times, I still cry when I see this beautiful scene.

Have you ever thought of its meaning? It’s very deep and has a lot of love message, of how you appreciate others, no matter where they come from, or what they are. Spoken wise, a great artist can come from anywhere.

And the fact that the ending has something really related to its own title (Ratatouille) is just superb because not so many movie can save its very own title from the beginning of the story ’till the end, yet make it the bomb for the ending. Like wise saying, save the best for last.

In the end, it leaves us with spirits that “anyone can cook” (but only the fearless can be great!). The spirit of how “a great artist can come from anywhere”. And also some cute memorable moments and an originality that easily mark it the best movie ever made. At least, from my point of view and all the Oscar judges that honored the movie in 2007 with the highest title an animation movie can ever achieve.

In the end, Ratatouille always leaves you with lots of warm feelings, and also with superb 2D animation of the credit title. The whole movie is so artistic, romantic and beautiful in such an elegant simplicity.

It has been two years since then, and I don’t think I will meet another one that can capture my heart like Ratatouille did, and does. And hopefully, will always. (mb)

Anyway, when I watched the NCIS: Los Angles premiere, I immediately thought that the actress who plays Hetty Lange looked like Edna Mode, the character that created the uniforms for the Incredibles, in the movie The Incredibles. Personally, I just found it really freaky that they look so much alike. I would say that they based Edna Mode on Linda Hunt. Anyway, I just found it freaky.

Toy Story (John Lasseter; 1995)

Toy Story 2 (John Lasseter; 1999)

Monsters Inc. (Pete Docter; 2001)

A few days ago I watched Ratatouille again, both for the splendor of its animation — I love the riot of textures and metallic surfaces in the kitchen — and the generosity of its finale, in which the heroes triumph over the sepulchral food critic Anton Ego. I was also nudged by Patton Oswalt’s hilarious new record, My Weakness Is Strong, which includes a few routines about his voice work on the film, in which he played Remy the rodent hero.

But the finale written by Brad Bird — who, after The Iron Giant and The Incredibles rates second only to Hayao Miyazaki in my book of great animators — is what always brings me back to Ratatouille. Any other animation shop would have devised a slapstick comeuppance for the critic and called it a day. In Ratatouille, Remy and his friends win him over by bringing him back to himself, and the story gives Ego not only that deeply touching flashback to his childhood, but the space to offer the film’s best line: ”Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.” A clip is at the bottom of this post. Consider the Spanish subtitles an educational plus.

After I saw Up — which is, despite my reservations about its second half, further proof that Pixar is the unchallenged standard-bearer for animated storytelling — I thought back to the recent corporate battle between John Lasseter’s shop and Disney, the corporate parent Pixar has creatively eclipsed.

Has there ever been a more crushing confession of failure than Disney’s threat, implicit in the renegotiation of its distribution deal with Pixar, to rush ahead with a second Toy Story sequel if Pixar went with another company? Disney was frankly admitting that its movies stink, its formulas are played out and its fund of creativity exhausted — and threatening to apply all those liabilities to Pixar’s most treasured property. ”Work with us, or you’ll see just how badly we can suck.” Some negotiating tactic!

Reviewing the film in The New Yorker, David Denby makes some cogent points about the distinction between Pixar films and Disney:

Yes, there was the classic Disney group of animated features, released between 1937 and 1942, which included “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pinocchio,” “Bambi,” and “Dumbo.” Children still love them, though this aging child doesn’t, really. The old Disney dispensation went roughly as follows: The material was largely based on fairy tales, with princes and queens and wicked stepmothers. Animals with long eyelashes engaged in gentle woodland conversation. There was much anthropomorphic charm, much sweet melodiousness, and, running through the sugar, a vinegary taste of fear, separation, punishment. The entire Bruno Bettelheim catalogue of psychological terrors churned below the surface. By now (for me, at least), the cloyingness, with its malevolent undertones, seems too calculated and heavy-spirited. But the recent Pixar films are something else. These movies are fashioned as much for adults as for kids. Set in the modern world, they are built around an exhilarating drive for achievement. A family of libertarian superheroes refuses to accept enforced mediocrity (“The Incredibles”). A talented rat wants to practice the art of cooking (“Ratatouille”). A robot saves the aesthetic remnants of a civilization ruined by excess and pollution (“WALL-E”). Some of the characters are isolated; they are all intelligent and strongly motivated. We’ve gone from psychological fable to moral fable, from fate to something like self-willed, even civic, passion.

There is much to like and dislike in the Disney catalogue, but my biggest beef with those canonical works – many of which I otherwise admire – was to give multiple generations of viewers the false idea that they actually know the story of Pinocchio, or the Little Mermaid, or Cinderella. You could argue that the original versions of those tales would be unpalatable to contemporary audience, and you might even be right. But the Disney operation’s habit of processing folk tales and forgotten classics into contemporary Cheez Whiz has been a problem for a lot of people, starting with Richard Schickel (whose 1968 book The Disney Version was the first serious attempt to examine the workings of Uncle Walt’s dream factory), and it played a big role in the company’s creative stagnation.

Right from the start, Pixar movies have turned their backs on stale fake-folktale plots and used contemporary materials with great freshness and ingenuity. Along with that “drive for achievement” Denby notes, Pixar movies also have a much broader emotional palette, including a readiness to weave adult fears and emotions into their kid-friendly storylines. The best line in the original Toy Story — “This isn’t flying, it’s falling with style!” — was taken even further in Toy Story 2, which quite explicitly addresses fears of mortality and the decision to make the most of your time regardless of what’s ahead. Apparently next year’s Toy Story 3 will continue that line of development, and I’m eager to see where they go with it.

http://www.tu.tv/videos/parcialmente-nublado-tienes-que-verlo

Saludos.

One of my favorite Pixar movies is “The Incredibles” about a family of superheroes living in suburbia.

If I were Brad Bird (the creator and writer of that movie and my other favorite, “Ratatouille”) I’d make a movie called, “The Indescribables” and include exhausted dill plants like the photo above. I have a whole series on this plant on my porch (in suburbia) that is totally exhausted, drooping and spindly gone and absolutely knock out gorgeous to me.

Rule #2:

Objects of beauty past prime still retain color, form, and composition. Take me for example, I’m 64.

But don’t you be photographing me with a macro lens.

©Pat Coakley 2009

PHOTOGRAPHS CANNOT BE USED WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSIONall

Photograph was taken with Canon D5 and 180mm macro lens. 3.5 at 1/200. Wind was involved as well. Photoshop tweaking with Levels and Curves. I’m a big fan of Levels and Curves but usually with my macro shots very little is needed.

Let’s go!

Monstruos S.A.

Hala.

This is a continuing series of lists dedicated to the endangered art of movie posters. Each volume of Magnificent Movie Posters will contain five evocative, hand-picked examples intended to show just what movie posters are supposed to look like. Other volumes can be found here, and please click on each image for a larger version!

Chinatown | Roman Polanski, 1974
International One-sheet by Jim Pearsall

This is the Italian version of the international poster for Roman Polanski’s 1974 title Chinatown, starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. I’d always admired the artwork on the American version of this particular poster but wondered why it had to be ruined by an unnecessarily large black border. Here, thankfully, the entire drawing is used – and to quite stunning effect. Chinatown is a Neo-Noir so this exciting yet vintage-looking piece really does well to reflect the film it advertises. The illustration itself is done by American artist Jim Pearsall who, you will notice, provides us with a hand-drawn border that is then breached by Nicholson’s character’s hat and cigarette smoke – so as to accentuate his importance and attitude towards boundaries and rules. Thankfully with this International edition we are saved from the horrible font used for the American poster.

*batteries not included | Matthew Robbins, 1987
American One-sheet by Drew Struzan

This entry is born out of nostalgia more than anything else, but it also rather importantly introduces one of the all-time great American poster artists: Drew Struzan. The Portland, Oregon native is perhaps the most important poster artist of my generation and sadly retired last year after a career spanning over 30 years. Working prolifically through the seventies and eighties, Struzan has worked closely with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and is responsible for many of Hollywood’s most memorable hand-drawn movie posters including those for Star Wars, Indiana Jones etc. I remember being introduced to this particular poster at a young age and being quite terrified at the prospect it served up despite the fact that *batteries not included is, of course, a family film. One can also note the name of a budding Brad Bird at the foot of the poster.

Citizen Kane | Orson Welles, 1941
Polish Re-release One-sheet by Grzegorz Marszatek

Here is another striking Polish poster, this time created for Citizen Kane by the artist Grzegorz Marszatek. I’ve included the film’s original release date about (1941) but this particular piece was actually produced sometime in the eighties for the Citizen Kane theatrical re-release over in Poland. As this much-publicised worldwide re-release took place, in some countries as early as 1964, the film was still seeing some initial releases in countries such as West Germany and Japan. It has been said that the film’s title character Charles Foster Kane was inspired by a number of powerful, colorful, and influential American individualists and financial barons in the early 20th century. One of these mentioned frequently is Time Magazine founder and mogul Henry Luce, which makes it somewhat ironic that the Polish artist would choose to iconize Kane in such a manner – the poster looks just like a Time cover.

The Bicycle Thieves | Vittorio De Sica, 1948
Danish One-sheet by Hervé Moran

Next up on my list is a favourite film but a little-known poster: the Danish One-sheet for Vittorio De Sica’s The Bicycle Thieves. Despite the film being part of the Neorealist movement and thus quite dark and difficult, the posters produced on its release are usual forties fare; brightly-coloured illustrations and text, the kind that was popular in the time. For much of Scandinavia and France however a different piece of art was used. Hervé Moran was a highly celebrated French poster artist in the forties and fifties, though his work mostly consisted of commercial advertising as opposed to film work. So prevalent was his artistry that many galleries in France have dedicated entire showings to it. Moran’s use of scale impresses here, with the bulky and alien form of the thief towering over the man and his son as they trudge through the pouring rain.

Taxi Driver | Martin Scorsese, 1976
American One-sheet by Guy Peelaert

Finally we have this general one-sheet poster for Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, which was drawn by Belgian ex-comic-artist Guy Peelaert. The initial and more widely used poster for Taxi Driver depicted Robert De Niro’s character in black and white, trudging the streets of New York City. However, a different, more colourful poster was requested by the studio and for this the artist Peelaert was brought in. The result is this beautiful effort that captures both the bewildered stance of Scorsese’s central character and his title occupation: the taxi driver. Unfortunately, the busy nature of the drawing with regards to colours obviously means that overlayed text wouldn’t work, so it is added on to the bottom section almost as an after thought – and while this was undoubtedly an unavoidable decision by those involved, it does detract from the poster somewhat.

Thank you for reading, and be sure to look out for new editions of Magnificent Movie Posters! Meanwhile, please feel free to list your own “magnificent” movie posters. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll use your choices as inspiration.

Brad Bird is one of the most visionary directors alive today. And he has guts. How many directors would have the nerve to go into Pixar and shake up the system to keep it fresh? How many directors would even know how to begin? Yet Bird did just this while writing and directing two of the most successful Pixar movies to date. The McKinsey Quarterly interviewed Brad Bird about his leadership at Pixar (posted at GigaOM).

No matter how detached or aloof any of us pretends to be, there’s a thumbs-up and thumbs-down

No matter how detached or aloof any of us pretends to be, there’s a thumbs-up and thumbs-down part in all of us. Herein lies an irony in the person of Roger Ebert: the man who, arguably, made contemporary movie criticism accessible to the masses, popularized the thumbs-rating system, and co-wrote the screenplay for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is one of the most verbose and pretentious chubsters to look down his nose at everyone else in the world. Oh yeah, he also wrote a book entitled, Your Movie Sucks. So, as distasteful as it is to acknowledge common ground with the guy who gave full reign to the most simplistic summary of movies the world has ever seen, a thumbs-up is in order: Ratatouille is just great and everyone should love it. The reluctance of my thumbs to gesture upwards has nothing to do with the film but, rather, the aforementioned wannabe screenwriter.

Ratatouille becomes especially interesting and quite significant when it is considered next to its director Brad Bird’s previous animated film, The Incredibles. Can’t remember where right now (probably some blah blah blog), but someone said something about Bird’s no-holds-barred, anything-goes approach to social politics as seen in his films. This is a common and deplorably lazy tactic on the part of those who, like Roger Ebert, want to boil down years of work and creativity of someone like a film director to one theme or trope which can easily be discarded. One may as well say that Pixar’s movies are all just cartoons. It turns out, though, that Bird’s films can’t be generalized so simplistically. These two films serve as good examples. The Incredibles does happen to uphold traditional family values. When Mr. Incredible and Elasti-Girl hook up, they get married, they have children, and they all take on the name “The Incredibles” – Mrs. Incredible is referred to later as “Elasti-Girl,” but, interestingly, there is a letter “i” on her suit. Mr. Incredible’s government-enforced ordinary life puts him in a cubicle environment that hampers his ability to fight crime and uphold justice. In a way, the moral of the film is that some people are special – implying that others aren’t. Dash expresses at least as much frustration as his father that he can’t use his powers, specifically in sports. His mother tells him that “everyone is special.” Dash replies, “Which is another way of saying, ‘No one’s special.’” The film vindicates the Incredibles’ re-entrance into crime-fighting and their use of super powers – even implying that as long as Dash sticks to 2nd place in sports, he isn’t misusing his powers.

Ratatouille is fundamentally different from The Incredibles. Right off, it’s true that Ratatouille doesn’t deny special talents and abilities; hence Remy the Rat’s culinary gift. But there is a certain moral to this story that is quintessentially egalitarian: “anyone can cook.” So plain is this lesson that it might actually be a deliberate counterpoint to the moral of The Incredibles: not everyone is super. In The Incredibles, the villain “Syndrome” was precisely the character who tried to be super and inherently was not. He utilized technology in order to bear super-traits and do super-things. (Nevermind that it would take a “super”-genius to do what he did.) Other than small roles from the babysitter, Mr. Incredible’s boss, and Syndrome’s female assistant, Syndrome is the only “non-super” given much attention at all in the film, and he’s the bad guy.

Selling out

Ratatouille wisely includes the character of Linguini, the freckle-faced bastard child of Gusto who is utterly incompetent but lucky enough to run into Remy. Given almost as much screen time as Remy, Linguini learns not to take credit for the abilities of others and happily condescends to the role of server, despite owning the restaurant where his friend the rat cooks. Some people do have special gifts, Anton Ego the food critic insists, but those gifts are not spread out the way people tend to think. Skills can be taught and learned, and non-masters shouldn’t be ignored for needing an education. The masters, though, sometimes show up in unexpected places; in this case, Remy came from the sewer. Anton’s concluding article praising his rodent-prepared food is smart to insist that “not everyone can be a great artist,” but also that great artists come from the most unexpected places. So instead of backpeddling on the moral from The Incredibles, Brad Bird balances it with realist wisdom. Perhaps smarter than this point, though, is Bird’s anticipation of critical reviews of the film itself. The film makes a preemptive strike by defining the point of criticism and positing that, however good a critic is, his job is only to point out the great work of artists.

The moment when the ratatouille dish hits Ego’s taste buds, there is a return to childhood and, of course, the maternal. The food disarms Ego’s critical armor, takes him back in time, and then returns him to the present where he promptly drops his pen on the floor. Up until this point, Ego has been identified with death, an interesting insertion by Bird. Ego’s body is skeletal, his face morbidly pale, his voice inhumanly deep, and the shape of his study and objects inside of it are clearly shaped like a coffin. His identification with death prefigures his return to life when he tastes Remy’s dish. The flashback to his childhood returns warm colors to the character and allows him to return to life while his critical coldness dies, signified through the falling pen. He proverbially picks up the pen again, but only to confess his own shortcomings as a critic compared to the incomparable power of masterful art. Instead of art existing for the critic, the critic now exists for the sake of beauty.
