Filme do ano de 1993, do realizador Tony Scott , mesmo do Man on Fire e do The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 que referi no penultimo post. ; escrito por Quentin Tarantino.

Altera entre a descoberta do amor de Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette), uma prostituta e Clarence Worley  (Christian Slater), um rapaz normal que gosta de Elvis e de Kung Fu; e  um monte de sarilhos, mortes, enredo e algumas partes de boa disposíção e violência.

No fim, acaba tudo num quarto de hotel com matança quase geral. Antes de ver no IMDB não sabia por quem tinha sido escrito o filme, e quando estava a ver essa parte pensei: “mesmo Tarantino!“, o que depois se confirmou.

True Romance , está cheio de grandes actores e tem alguns “ingredientes” para um bom filme, pelo menos para o meu tipo de filme; apesar de ser estranho ver actores como Brad Pitt e Samuel L. Jackson com papeis tão “insignificantes” (devido ao ano em que o filme foi feito).

It’s hard to come up with even the beginnings of a list of successful, high-quality video game movies and it’s more than just Uwe Boll: there seems to be a conflict between what the moviemakers think their audience wants and what viewers are actually paying to see. When Tomb Raider is considered a relative critical darling, you know the genre’s in trouble.

Which is why there’s some hope in the fact that Brad Pitt has now acquired the rights to produce a film version of the upcoming game Dark Void. Some might wonder why they should trust the actor’s choice, but his track record includes The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Departed, God Grew Tired of Us, Running with Scissors and 2010’s Kick-Ass. So if that’s any indication, look forward to Dark Void being potentially becoming a legitimately good adaptation.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – “Dark Void” will yield movie development matter.

Indian giant Reliance BIG Entertainment and Brad Pitt’s Plan B shingle are developing a film version of the upcoming video game, and Pitt could well star as the lead combatant.

The two firms have acquired rights to the Capcom third-person shooter and will develop the material as a feature. The companies said the project would be a “potential starring vehicle” for Pitt. No writers have been hired yet.

“Void” centers on a cargo pilot named Will (Pitt’s presumed character) who, after crashing in the Bermuda Triangle, ends up in a parallel universe where a band of humans must fight an alien threat that had long been thought extinct. Will and the other humans are outmanned but have a number of weapons and powers to help them beat back the alien incursion.

The game will be released for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in January.

The project is the first to come out of a development partnership between Plan B and Reliance that was announced at the Cannes festival in 2008. The Indian giant has deals with a number of other Hollywood production banners, including Julia Roberts’ Red Om and George Clooney’s Smokehouse.

Video games have had a mixed record on the big screen, with title likes “Max Payne” mutating into critical and commercial flops. But executive involved in this deal pointed to the advantages a “Dark Void” movie would have over its predecessors.

“As a game, ‘Dark Void’ was developed with a wide-screen mentality — a world full of adventure presented in cinematic scope and scale,” Capcom senior vice president of licensing Germaine Gioia said.

"Have your face set. I don't wanna end up just humping air."

After having my mind blown by Star Trek, I flipped over to the American Music Awards in time to see Jennifer Lopez’s comeback attempt performing a song whose name I don’t recall and am not inclined to look up.

While 1999-2000 really seems like just yesterday, the decade has, indeed, come to  a close and things are not what they once were, as evidenced by Lopez’s tumble after vaulting off the back of a dancer while wearing five-inch heels. She recovered from the tumble, gathering herself enough to ask the crowd (via lip-synch) “You miss me?” The resounding response seemed to be “Once upon a time.”

Now, I could go in on Jennifer Lopez about the tumble or the singing poorly and such, but I have to admit: When she fell I gasped. I clapped my hand over my mouth and actually felt bad. Seeing any performer stumble is cringe-worthy because it really is like dying a thousand deaths on stage, but this emotion had something more to it.

I imagine anyone who saw it thought to themselves “JLo woulda nailed that. Jennifer Lopez, mother of two out of the limelight for a few years, apparently cannot.” Watching great performers lose a step always kind of hurts a little.

A few more thoughts on the AMAs in no particular order:

- Adam Lambert has vocal talent, but I think seeing him perform last night proved that performing live in a concert setting takes a particular talent that plenty of people don’t nail their first time–if ever. As I watched him cavort about the stage as in his spiked suit get-up, face-humping dancers and, at one point, pulling at the crotch chain of a woman in leather underwear, I couldn’t help but think to myself, “This is one time when being gay is helping this dude.” There are things each group can get away with that other can’t e.g. Blacks and “nigga”; women and “see you next Tuesday”…and I feel like crotch-chain pulling is not something I could do successfully.

-Taylor Swift is a talented kid. I was aware of her Pre-Kanye and can say that she does her thing and moves units with pre-Napster-like efficiency. In the pop sense, she is the real deal. That being said, enough is enough. Her windfall from being the little (white) girl who had her moment stolen from the drunken (black) dude is without parallel. Her beating Michael Jackson at anything just looks terrible in the historical sense, but I frankly think it’s worse that she beat a living person by the name of Lady Gaga. This robbery was tantamount to whoever won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar over Val Kilmer for his role in Tombstone. Really. Twitterer @BlackCanseco summed it up nicely when he said, “Once again #TaylorSwift is gettin more sympathy/support than Rihanna. And dude neva laid a glove on her.”

-Gaga is a no-pants wearing beast. Just talented and terribly mesmerizing. Still, those who worship at her altar should keep in mind that she’s Cyndi Lauper with the benefit of the internet.

-HD doesn’t flatter anyone. That’s not even throwing shade; it’s a sad reality that really can’t help the ego of anyone who has cameras pointed at them all the time. Watching the various acts, I started subconsciously touching my own face and thinking “Damn, they’d see every possible ingrown hair scenario on my already big-looking head”. It’s just like one of those giant “Oh crap, I’m ugly!” vanity mirrors women have on their nightstands.

-Jermaine Jackson is eating this up. I’m sure he misses his little brother–I’m sure of it–but he’s eating this up.

-Whitney’s a cagey veteran who really does deserve credit for bouncing back as she has, but people who mention this should do so with a hint of context. Yes; she came back from the brink, but you’re not really ever on the brink brink when you’re a wealthy world-famous entertainer who wasn’t foolish enough to squander every dime you have and thus, have the resource to come back from whatever needs coming back from.

-No big deal Jay but…numbers lie all the time. In fact, they’re often skewed for the purpose of deception so…yeah.

-Eminem began “Crack a Bottle” announcing, boxer-style, his height and weight, then rattled off these statistics “17 rapes, 400 assaults and 4 murders.” Maybe I work too much in news and such, but I found that first part particularly Pelosi Face-inducing. In semi-related news, I’m convinced a lot of already-famous rappers are no longer interested in rapping altogether and are completely nonplussed at the prospect of having to do so live.

-Timbaland’s fatal mistake wasn’t coming on stage looking like he’d started Thanksgiving a few weeks early; his error was in going from round to fit to rounder. You just can’t do that. If you’re going to stay round, people will notice your expansion, but won’t think much of it unless you become morbidly rotund. If you get swoll and take pictures in just smediums and clearly want it to be known you’re getting it in physically, you have to stay somewhere in that range. You cannot come out looking like you just ate Rick Ross with a side of Jazze Pha. For good or ill, those are the rules.

-I don’t pretend to really, really know what happened between Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, but I’m disinclined to think it was on the level and feel funny whenever I hear her singing love and relationship songs. On a semi-related note, has any woman gotten to skate more on something as egregious? I’m thinking her only competition of famous famous people is Angelina Jolie and even she didn’t break up a home with a kid in play. Lots of women have tried to tread this ground before and ended up like the first dude who tried to find the grail in The Last Crusade.

Segons publica una informació de la revista Variety, l’acord entre la productora de Pitt i Capcom, la companyia de videojocs creadora de ‘Dark Void’, inclou una tercera companyia, Reliance Big Pictures. La publicació estatunidenca encara no dóna una data d’estrena però el videojoc es publicarà per a PS3, Xbox 360 i PC, el 22 de gener del 2010.

La història de ‘Dark Void’ té com a protagonista Will, el personatge que presumptament interpretarà Pitt, un pilot que s’estrella al Triangle de les Bermudes. Quan recupera el coneixement, el protagonista es veu transportat a un univers paral·lel on un grup d’humans intenta sobreviure a la persecució de forces alienígenes.

Una història d’acció i combat amb la qual Pitt espera trencar la maledicció que fins avui existeix entre cinema i videojocs. La llista de fiascos, entre els quals hi han títols tan populars com ‘Street Fighter’, ‘Max Payne’, ‘Alone in the Dark’ o ‘Hitman’, és àmplia i pocs són els títols que s’han salvat en el seu salt des de la consola fins al cinema. Curiosament, un d’ells pot ser ‘Tomb Raider’, en què la seva parella, Angelina Jolie, es va ficar en la pell de la heroïna Lara Croft.

O jogo Dark Void da Capcom ainda nem foi lançado e já surgem notícias de que ganhará um filme, e quem pode assumir o papel principal é simplesmente Brad Pitt… Acho que isso vai dar merda!

As produtoras BIG Entertainment e Plan B planejam levar o game aos cinemas, e como Brad Pitt é sócio da Plan B, este estuda estrelar o filme, o que acho que pode dar errado, pois ator famoso em filme baseado em jogo nunca deu certo, e creio que este não será o primeiro. Acho que a melhor forma de se fazer um filme baseado em jogo seria pegar um ator mais desconhecido, que realmente se pareça com o personagem do game, e como desconhecido, não tenha nenhum trabalho associado à sua imagem.

O jogo é de ação, e conta com o sistema de cobertura, que ficou famoso com Gears of War, e combate áereo, não apenas com naves, mas com um jet pack também, mais ou menos como o de GTA San Andreas. Os vídeos do game liberados até hoje mostram grande potencial, com uma jogabilidade aparentemente boa. O protagonista é Will, um piloto da Segunda Guerra Mundial abduzido por alienígenas, que foi parar em uma dimensão hostil, e deve combater uma raça invasora ao lado de outros humanos.

O jogo deve ser lançado no dia 19 de janeiro de 2010 para PC, Xbox 360 e PlayStation 3. Creio que podemos esperar alguma coisa do game, mas não posso dizer o mesmo do filme, eu já desisti de ter um bom filme baseado em jogo.

‘Can I help you out with that trash?’

I heard a voice over my shoulder and, sure enough, when I looked up it was Gwyneth Paltrow on a break from up-dating her website, GOOP.

I knew very well she was being ironic. Certainly, she seemed quite tickled by the notion of it. So I left my chore and invited her into my mouse house.

After I’d washed my hands I got some fish fingers out of the fridge. They can defrost together, I thought as I welcomed her warmly.

Gwynnie is a piece of alabaster perfection and she can do long and short hair, as she showed us in Sliding Doors. I asked for some beauty tips, which she surrendered gracefully.

Nevertheless, she roundly dismissed my offer to paint her nails, with a snort through her elegant nose.

‘Do you prefer Luke or Owen Wilson?’ I asked, referring to her roles in the Wes Anderson films.

‘Oh, I couldn’t possibly choose between them,’ she replied coyly.

‘I could,’ I revealed. ‘Owen. More chamomile tea?’

We went for a walk around Ravenscourt Park so she could get some air. She seemed to relax a little but I have to admit I was quite annoyed because she was wearing sunglasses so no-one knew who she was.

She told me about how she thinks shampoo gives children cancer and how she bounces on a trampoline to sculpt the fabulous skyscraper heel legs that tell the world she’s sexy even though she’s the mother of Moses and a piece of fruit.

‘And Chris- well, he’s so talented. He takes his music very seriously,’ she opened up.

‘Do you think he takes quite a lot of stuff seriously?’ I asked, trying to widen my eyes.

‘No, not at all,’ she replied very seriously. ‘Chris has got a fantastic sense of humour. Just this morning over breakfast he was saying something really funny… Now what was that?’

I let her flail around like a weighted puppy for what seemed like an eternity before blowing the whistle and diving in with a basic bacon and egg gag, at which she laughed so hard I began to wonder if she really does find Chris a bit of a card.

I could tell right from the get-go that she wasn’t going to dish the dirt- she’s not desperate enough, having been born into fame and privilege.

So I took the liberty of switching off and playing ’shag, marry, cliff’, teaming her up with Jennifer and Angelina, seeing as they all like a bit of Brad Pitt.

It was a no-brainer she was ‘marry’- hell, I’d already managed to spend a few hours in her company without really listening. The other two were easy as well: ’shag’ Jen and ‘cliff’ Angelina (playing the rules by my original understanding of them, whereby ‘cliff’ is the person you are so crazy about you would be willing to jump off one with them).

When I came round, Gwynnie was talking about Anna Wintour and I regretted not paying attention. She said Anna started inviting her to lunches with John Galliano after her Oscar win and reckoned it was because the Queen of Vogue admired her work.

I let it slide. But it got me thinking about Shakespeare in Love.

‘Joseph Fiennes is quite intense but don’t you think his eyes are too close together?’ I asked, hungry for her professional opinion.

‘I was so blessed to work with Jo. He’s a giant of an actor,’ she replied.

‘Wow. Taller than Tim Robbins?’ I asked.

I think I got the wrong end of the stick but I knew she was relieved I didn’t allude to her acceptance speech debacle.

Instead, I praised her English accent and told her she was much better than Renee Zellweger, who sounds like she’s being goosed by the President but can’t let on.

Gwynnie found this remark distasteful. Angelina had warned me that she was a cut above but did I listen? No.

‘Have some of my Mum’s fruit cake with a thin layer of Lurpak butter on it,’ I suggested as she gathered her mobile phones to leave.

In reply to which- and oh, please God, may I never feel so wrong again- she gave me a look that still sends shivers down my spine.

‘I’m not sure I get you, Sophie,’ she said eventually, as she let two bodyguards help her on with her trainers. ‘But probing characters is my vocation so I’m going to take you to bed with me for a few nights to see what I can figure out.’

O.K, I thought.

As long as you don’t mind Jennifer Aniston joining us.

We are watching the heavens!

The Sun entered Sagittarius on November 21st, @ 11:22Pm EST.  Sagittarius will be a relief from the intensity of the last heavenly month of Scorpio.

The Sagittarius is charming and comes on strong when they flirt, thus they easily attract the opposite sex.  They are commitment reluctant  as they strongly desire their freedom.  They need alone time from their lovers, and sometimes that means banging someone else occasionally.

They can be incredibly materialistic.

They are wise and intelligent, but sometimes this isn’t so obvious by the things they say or how they say them.  I heard one Sagittarius say, “Animals are the best peoples in the world.” Indeed they are!

A Sagittarius can do exceptionally well in any career they desire, as long as they don’t fall victim to their natural procastination.  They may talk about doing great wonderful things, but often don’t follow thru.  Get off your lazy ass!

En scen ur Inglourious Basterds.

Jag var rätt nyligen och såg Quentin Tarantinos nya film Inglourious Basterds (jo, titeln stavas faktiskt så) som handlar om en styrka amerikanska judar som får i uppdrag att sprida skräck i Tredje riket genom att brutalt mörda och skalpera nationalsocialister i naziockuperade Frankrike. Styrkan leds av löjtnant Aldo “The Apache” Raine, spelad av Brad Pitt, som kräver att var och en av de nio som ingår i gruppen skall avliva minst 100 tyskar och dessutom skalpera dem och överlämna skalperna till honom!

Under resans gång  knyts en tysk soldat som lustmördat 13 Gestapo-män till “The Basterds”, som gruppen kallas av tyskarna, och tar sig med nöje an sin nya uppgift. I Paris stiftar gruppen bekantskap med den unga judinnan Shoshanna Dreyfus, spelad av Melanie Laurent, som flytt från sitt hem på den franska landsbygden sedan hon så när blivit infångad av SS-officeren Hans Landa (Christoph Walz) som sänts ut av Hitler för att spåra upp alla judar i Frankrike; hela hennes familj mördas.  Shoshanna driver en biograf i Paris tillsammans med en färgad vän.

Det är när den tyske krigshjälten Frederick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), som blir förälskad i den tysk- och nazihatande Shoshanna, kommer in i handlingen som en utstuderad plan att spränga biografen innehållande hela nazitoppen tar form. Zoller lyckas nämligen övertala sin vän Joseph Goebbels, den tyske propagandaministern, att låta en nyinspelad film om honom själv och hans “hjältedåd” som prickskytt premiärvisas på Shoshannas biograf. Samtidigt jobbar Raine och hans mannar på att mörda nazitopparna på sitt eget kaotiska sätt.

Här skall inte filmens spektakulära slutfas avslöjas för den som tänkt se filmen medan den ännu finns på den svenska repertoaren, men nog blir det fyrverkerier i den högre skolan och en extra knorr på slutet. The Inglourious Basterds gör inte anspråk på att vara någon realistisk krigsfilm utan är en typiskt tarantinsk skröna, som för en gångs skull framställer judar under Andra världskriget som blodtörstiga slaktare och inte som viljelösa offer. Ombyte förnöjer som bekant, och nog är detta en mycket välgjord och en mycket underhållande film som jag gärna rekommenderar.

Det fanns emellertid litet varstans i verkligheten militanta judar som bekämpade tyska nazister under Andra världskriget. Jag har redan (7 oktober) på min blogg skrivit om upproret i Warszawaghettot 1943, där polska judar visade för världen att de var både villiga och kapabla att ta sig an Tredje riket. Warszawas kämpande ghettojudar hämtade inspiration från en judisk gerillarörelse i Litauen och Polen, som leddes av den legendariske kommendanten Abba Kovner. Om detta har Rich Cohen skrivit en fascinerande bok som heter The Avengers. A Jewish War Story (Vintage, London 2000).

The Avengers är historien om  tre judiska ungdomar- ingen av dem hade fyllt 20 år – som lämnar sina hem i västra Polen och omsider hamnar i det judiska ghettot i den litauiska huvudstaden Wilna (Vilnius). De tre är Abba Kovner, Vitka Kempner och Rozka Korczak. Kovner utvecklas till en ledargestalt i ghettot medan de båda unga kvinnorna Kempner och Korczak blir hans ställföreträdare. 1943 flyr de tre ghettot i Wilna och ställer sig i spetsen för ett band gerillakämpar som gömmer sig djupt i de polsk-litauiska skogarna och utför sabotageaktioner mot de tyska stridskrafterna. Här stannar de tre under resten av kriget för att därefter småningom ta sig till vad som snart blev Israel.

Efter krigsslutet började Abba Kovner, sedan han anlänt till Palestina, med sina vänner bland motståndskämparna planera för en spektakulär hämndaktion mot den tyska nationen. Genom förgiftade vattenreservoarer i tyska städer skulle miljoner tyskar mördas: öga för öga, tand för tand. Kovner och hans grupp lojala judiska motståndskämpar kallade sig “Hämnarna” (avengers, på hebreiska Dam Yehudi Nakam). “Vi kanske inte kan förhindra en ny förintelse”, resonerade man, “men vi kan se till att den inte blir ohämnad.”

Av olika skäl inställdes denna aktion (plan A) men i stället genomfördes en plan B, då ett krigsfångeläger för tyskar nära Nürnberg utsattes för en giftattack med arsenik vilket enligt uppgifter i amerikansk press ledde till att 2238 man förgiftades och måste vårdas på sjukhus.  Om några av dessa dog, och i så fall hur många, är oklart. Det kan nämnas att sionistledaren Chaim Weizmann, som skulle bli Israels förste president, enligt Cohens skildring godkände plan B under ett samtal med Kovner.

Det dröjde inte länge efter sin ankomst till Israel innan Abba Kovner på nytt blev inblandad i krigshandlingar, nu som kämpe i den israeliska armé som betvingade de fem arabiska nationer som angrep staten Israel efter dess utropande i maj 1948.  Senare blev Abba Kovner (1918-87) rikskänd som poet, filosof, visionär och även arkitekt (han har designat Diasporamuséet i Tel Aviv).

Abba Kovner gifte sig 1948 med sin livskramrat Vitka Kempner (Kovner), född 1920, som när detta skrivs uppges fortfarande vara i livet och ha två barn och fyra barnbarn. Rozka Korczak (1921-88) dog, liksom Abba Kovner, i cancer.

Algunos piensan y dicen que Quentin Tarantino es un genio, un fuera de serie, un visionario mas allá de su época, que ha visto muchas películas de serie B, que expresa lo que siente sin tapujos en el cine. Otros podrán pensar que de pequeño tuvo algún problema o alguna tragedia en su infancia, una mala experiencia o algo así, pero lo que no cabe duda es que hace cine del bueno, puede ser más o menos bueno, pero cine que en general gusta.

Con esta “Malditos bastardos” iba con más miedo que ganas, porque sentía pánico a un llamado por mi “Efecto Trencavel” que es igual o más viral que el “efecto 2000” que es aquel que pone por los cielos a una película (desde su punto de vista) y luego es una caca de la vaca desde el mío. Pero bueno… salvando que me gusto más Death Proof, la nueva de Tarantino se lleva el aprobado con más que suficiencia.

La película se sitúa en la Francia ocupada por los nazis y de dos historias entramadas, por un lado la de los malditos bastardos judeoamericanos contra los nazis, y por otro el de una chica judeofrancesa que después de que los nazis mataran a su familia, llega el momento de recibir su dulce venganza.

Además de todo lo mentado arriba, de la genialidad de Tarantino, tenemos que nombrar también el topicazo de las Tarantino Original Motion Picture Soundtrack que se salen de lo buenas que son, y la ambientación de la película, con paisajes más que currados y con una imagen y una fotografía genial, sobre todo en el último tercio de la película, donde discurre como rio abierto la trama de la misma.

Sin duda, como dije arriba, aprobado con mas que suficiencia y con un regustor a buena película que sin lugar a dudas habría merecido los 6 € del cine.

Sometimes I leave a theater and think, “What was the point of that?” It tends mostly to happen with films that dwell in negativity without any obvious message, like There Will Be Blood. That’s a film I still can’t wrap my mind around as far as what it was trying to say.

But I’m not sure wondering about a film’s point is entirely fair. There are plenty of recent movies I’ve loved whose points – or lack thereof – never gave me pause. I can’t say I bothered with wondering about the points of The Bank Job or Zombieland. For these films a good, well-told story is a point unto itself. Heck, straight entertainment is a pretty good point. Maybe expectations are higher for prestige pics and I demand more, but even for these pictures I try to extend the principle that sometimes a story well-told is good enough. Some movies just eschew messages and themes for story, character, style, and atmosphere.

And that takes me to Inglourious Basterds, a film that really seems to eschew message. And if I can pat myself on the back I think I did a good job enjoying it despite it having no point. It’s a good, very enjoyable film with lots of fun, stylistic flourishes. I think what keeps it from being a great film is that it also doesn’t really have a story. There’s an overarching idea of Jewish American soldiers killing Nazis and a French Jew’s revenge plot to take out important Nazis. But instead of telling the whole tale, the film is divided into several vignettes, like Tarantino decided to just skip to the good parts. It seems to me his only real point is to be awesome, which certainly makes for an entertaining film but I think I need a bit more ambition to really love a movie.

The Weinsteins are gearing up for a Best Picture nomination campaign for it. I can’t say I really could get behind the nomination on its merits, but it would be an interesting, outside-the-box type nomination and those are always welcome. With ten nominations it’s hard to imagine a Basterds nod will squeeze out a personal favorite. I’ve also never been a huge Tarantino fan – I like him fine but his films are never a must-watch for me – but he’s undeniably an important and influential modern director with a dearth of Oscar recognition beyond Pulp Fiction (for which he won the Original Screenplay award). I can imagine forty years from now later generations of Oscar watchers wondering how the Academy managed to ignore him so often.

Beyond Best Picture and Tarantino as writer and director, Christoph Waltz seems to be a lock for a Supporting Actor nod for his role as an evil SS commander. That will certainly be well-deserved as Waltz is the primary image that remains in my mind from this film. He’s so deliciously evil, scheming, ad creepy. I’m not sure what else the Weinsteins are aiming for. Melanie Laurent for sure, though who knows whether in Supporting or Lead. Maybe Diane Kruger too? Or Brad Pitt? None would be a bad choice. And along with the film’s intense kick-assery could come some technical recognition (Editing? Score? Art Direction? Costume?).

Anyway, Inglourious Basterds is certainly one of the most distinctive films of the year and an enjoyable and entertaining one at that. I think it’s a testament to Tarantino’s cultural importance (and the Weinsteins’ PR prowess) that it’s even in the discussion for top prizes. But, even if I don’t think it’s in that top echelon of films, it’s hard to argue when something a bit different sneaks into the Academy’s exclusive club.

Brad Pitt has been making waves in the green building world lately, so it’s only appropriate that the newest house completed for his Make It Right Foundation project be a floating one. Being revealed today in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, the Float House by Morphosis Architects, goes beyond sustainable design and construction and is built within the context of its environment – it can float. In case of flooding, the home can literally break away from it’s moorings and rise up up to 12 feet on two guideposts. It won’t float away, but it will act as a raft and provide the family with enough battery power to allow them to survive for up to three days until help arrives.

Thom Mayne, founder of Morphosis and winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, wanted to build a home that could survive through hurricane flooding as well fit in with the surrounding homes. He and his team designed a house that was essentially built on a chassis of polystyrene foam and covered with glass-reinforced concrete. During hurricane flooding conditions, the home could break away from its electrical lines, gas and plumbing and rise with the flood waters. Anchored to its site by two guideposts the home could sustain 12 foot high flood waters.

While it has never been tested in real life flood conditions, Morphosis conducted extensive computer simulations and modeled it to withstand Hurricane Katrina-like conditions. There is also a battery backup in the home with enough capacity to power crucial appliances for up to three days.

As with all Make It Right home, the Float House is built with environmentally friendly materials , but in contrast to the other homes, this one is built on the ground level rather than 12 feet above the ground. Mayne and Morphosis wanted to retain the look of the existing community and make it more accessible to people who didn’t want to or couldn’t get up a huge flight of stairs. Mayne says about the house and design, “Hopefully it never gets used. But when it gets used, it’s important.”
