Si por algo se caracteriza la industria musical es por intentar frenar la tecnología en vez de adaptarse y buscar nuevos modelos de negocio, en una clara intención de ponerle diques al mar.

Muchos artistas, sobretodo nuevos en el mundillo, han comenzado a pensar en otros modelos de negocio, dejando de lado el afán por vender discos y enfocando más su carrera en darse a conocer mediante la difusión gratuita de su obra y viviendo de los conciertos, de la música en directo. Dejando de lado a las discográficas y pensando en autoeditarse. O dejando de lado los derechos de autor y publicando sus obras bajo licencias copyleft como Creative Commons o Arte Libre.

Este nuevo modelo de música, la música libre, tiene otra ventaja. La libre distribución. Páginas como Jamendo, donde los artistas pueden subir su música gratuitamente y su público descargarla de igual manera, tienen ya más de 26.000 álbumes de todos los estilos.

Uno de esos grupos es Brad Sucks, la curiosa banda unipersonal del canadiense Brad Turcotte, donde él solo escribe, graba, produce y publica las canciones en su página web para que se puedan descargar gratuitamente o comprar.
Como ya he dicho, Brad Sucks se define como banda unipersonal, ya que Turcotte toca por separado la guitarra, el bajo, los teclados y es, además, la voz del grupo,  juntándolo todo después y dando la impresión de que es una banda de varios integrantes.
Sus estilos son de amplio espectro y pasan por el rock más clásico al más alternativo, por el pop, el indie o la música electrónica.
Sus dos álbumes I Don’t Know What I’m Doing y Out of it, han pasado de las 240.000 reproducciones y más de 15.000 descargas en la plataforma Jamendo, pero dichos discos pueden descargarse o comprarse en la própia página del grupo o en plataformas como Magnatune, ccMixter, MySpace o Podsafe.
Sus canciones han sido y son utilizadas en anuncios de televisión, en programas de radio o como banda sonora de la película Wrath Of The 1337 King.
Además Brad Turcotte aporta también su granito de arena al mundo del software libre, como los sonidos por defecto del Pidgin, un programa de mensajería instantánea o paquetes de software especializados para músicos.

Music and art can change our World for the good. You already know how chaotic it is these days if you are awake: Swine Flu hype, G20 Riots, Vaccinations, Nuclear Standoffs, RFID chips, health care arguments, economy, Iraq War, terrorism, the New World Order, 1st amendment violations, unemployment, and the list can go on and on.

I’ve been thinking about this post on Everything2.com a lot lately. It’s one of those things that, from the moment I read it, stayed lodged in my head and would occasionally rear up and present itself. I lost track of it for ages and have spent hours and hours looking for it in the last few days, desperate to read the exact words. Turns out that I had a copy saved on my hard drive the entire time. Heh. Thought I’d put it up on here just so I wouldn’t have to do all that again.

Just remember that for every thought that you have had, you’ve lost a thousand others. Nothing that you can possibly dream of will ever be better than the least thing you manage to accomplish. There is no such thing as failure, since there is no such thing as success. There is no perfection. There is no shining light. There is no place for you. We are all essentially very much alone in a sea of other lonely souls. We cannot touch. We can only pretend to have tenuous points of contact. We can only imagine what it means to be in touch with another. There is no truth to this, unless you accept the truth that there is no truth.

What you do today will be a logical extension of what you did yesterday. Multiply this by every single person you know, then by every person they know. And so on. Continue until you realize that there is no such thing as happenstance. Every single thing that happens is caused by all that came before it. History is simply an approach to critical mass, when nothing else can happen. There just will not be enough room for anything else to happen. What then? Well, nothing, naturally. We probably wouldn’t even notice.

But don’t worry, because there is (you see this coming) nothing to worry about. If you wanted to worry about something, you should have had the foresight to change clothes yesterday (which would affect today). Everything is connected and yet people are so far apart.

I hosted and edited and drafted the agenda and everything, with a little (OK, a lot) of help from CPC Editor Alex Watson. Alex is pretty cool, and cooler still for helping me out. He also, through the podcast, introduced me to Brad Sucks – the musician who provide the jingle music for the podcast. Turns out all of his music is free to listen to, so give it an ear on Spotify.

Problems with the recording industry? Why does she like opportunities of new media?

This article was very interesting to me because I know Courtney Love as the rebel singer, spilling off the stage most of the time. What she wrote was very insightful and shocking at the same time. The problems that she has with the recording industry are what I have experienced and assumed in the past, with the agents, producers, marketers, writers, and so on getting their percentage of the profit. For the artist or band, the initial advance they are given seems like a lot of money, but it all must be paid back. Like Kanye West said in his song “Touch the Sky” featuring Lupe Fiasco, he said “I went to Jacob an hour after I got my advance” referring to Jacob the Jeweler, a well-known jeweler among celebrities. In the end the artist is left with practically nothing because of all the percentages given out leading to bankruptcy with bands like TLC and singer Toni Braxton. 
Love touches on the subject of “work for hire” when the rights for the song goes to the highest bidder, instead of the artist allowing to leave it to family or whomever. I believe this may have been the case with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson owned over 200 songs that McCartney and John Lennon wrote. I think after their 80’s song together on the Thriller album, their friendship was ultimately over. Although today with Michael’s financial troubles, he may have sold them to McCartney. 
Love likes sites like Napster because those free downloads she believes are creating more demand. Love says, “ digital distributions gives everyone worldwide instant access to music”. The Black Eyed Peas just came out with a new album called “The End”, which group member Will.I.Am says on his interview on The View, is the end of an age or era of traditional style of music, it’s a new interactive way to make music and connect with fans. 
Love believes that if she continues to give music free as herself as the source, then fans will be kind enough to tip, comparing herself to a waitress and the recording industry a restaurant. She says that she understands she is in the service industry, and if she does a good job and people feel her music, they will tip. 

The “BradSucks” website was interesting. For someone who claims not to have a main goal for profit or be supported by a major label, the site was easily viewable and organized. First of all, the name is brilliant and I was automatically curious once I saw the link for the assignment. The site gives an instant preview at the top of the page for the music, availability to download the whole album for $10 bucks, an area for tips (like Love said), and sections for news, forums, blog, store, and submissions of remixes. He writes, records, and produces songs so people may share and enjoy his music. He says that he had made profit from people using his music on television, commercials, and radio, and people buying directly from him- another point Love talked about. He even has an F.A.Q., with one of the questions asking, “Why buy the album if you offer them for free?” And he responds quite honestly, “I don’t know!”. He assumes its because people either want something tangible, they might support him, or there is a possibility that people pity him which I thought was quite funny. His way is honest and it allows people to have freedom with listening, sharing, talking about it in the forum, and even redeveloping his songs on the site. It gives people an opportunity to hear music, give their opinion, and change/edit/make it better if they choose. These options are very interactive and are perfect for this day and age of digital distribution of music.

2. Making Me Nervous: Brad Sucks – This song just happened to catch my ear on Pandora. Plus, I have a friend named Brad who sucks so there’s that.

3. Believe (Moon Version): The Bravery – I liked the original version but then I heard this and decided that it’s creepy/Halloweenie qualities make it even better.

4. Indivisible: The Dirtbombs – Reminds me of a chorus some goons would sing from an old timey cartoon, like Popeye.

5. Black Gloves: Goose – To paraphrase another fan; beer and Goose are two of the best things to come out of Belgium.

6. Save Ginny Weasley from Dean Thomas: Harry and the Potters – I’m a huge Potter fan but never thought the music scene could be any good. I was so wrong. But, I’m not a fan of Draco and the Malfoys for various reasons.

7. Running the World: Jarvis Cocker – Possibly one of the best songs ever, released by one of the coolest guys ever.

8. Skeleton Song: Kate Nash – I love this song, but I also really like when pretty English girls sing just about anything.

9. Not Fair: Lily Allen – This is the song that Liz Phair would record if she was 22 again, and English. Also, please refer to my answer to number 8.

10. Staring at the Sun: TV On The Radio – Music really helps get my creative juices flowing but rarely does a song, or band, have such a direct impact on my work as this song did. It actually made me decide to kill a character in a story, for no other reason than the fact that I decided it was emotionally necessary to the story.

Here’s a song I’ve been workin on tentatively named Seamus&Amos….

It’s hard to find the time to just sit down and practice enough so that I can sing the lyrics while playing the rhythm on the guitar. Just some muscle memory and willpower will do the trick. And some extra time, damnit!

The funny thing about this song is that everytime I play it I picture these two:

Seamus Finnigan of Harry Potter fame and Amos Lee, the musical artist, going around town being hooligans and getting nothing accomplished. The lyrics come from the simple fact that it’s fun to say. It’s something I came up with in class. When I blank out in class I’m either a) doodling b) thinking about what I will eat next c) thinking about music or d) thinking of tongue twisters and words that sound cool together. Seriously.

Other news includes this dude named Brad who sucks. Brad Sucks is a one man band with no fans (and is also a liar because his music is pretty cool and I’m fairly certain a lot of people like him.) Whatever, whether or not he sucks is irrelevant. The fact that he’s putting out his own music on his own time in his own way is admirable. You so don’t suck for that, Bradley, sir.

My name is Eric. You can call me Bob. I’m gonna be a guest author here at Audible Freedom, popping in from time to time. Let me start off by saying that I don’t know a lick about music culture. Music genre definitions elude me and I have a very vague grasp of what terms like melody and rhythm mean.

That being said, Brad Sucks is rockin’.

The best way I can describe Brad Sucks is ‘mellow tragedy’. The artist bemoans his situation with a laid-back attitude that could only come from coping with a lot of problems. Or drugs. And in reality, it’s probably a little of both.

Drugs, jobs and girls. Or maybe it’s just a bunch of nonsense. Either way, both albums (‘I Don’t Know What I’m Doing‘, his first album or the more recent ‘Out of It‘)-pretty much rule. The music is suited both for rocking out, and being depressed. I’ve found myself beat down, ready to take a nap for a month, playing ‘Fixing My Brain’ and chilling out. Or freaking out the guy in the car next to me, wailing on my steering wheel with ‘Bad Attraction’.

Brad Sucks is the stage name of Brad Turcotte, a self-described ‘one man band with no fans’. From Canada. Awesome. It’s worth noting, Brad probably exemplifies free music more than most bands. Not only are his songs free to download, copy, distribute, remix, and use, but the ’source’ of those songs are available on his site as well. Music loops, voice tracks, etc. Brad encourages remixes, and even has a section of his site devoted to them. With no rights reserved, his music effectively lays in public domain, with blueprints, materials and all.

Wie versprochen kommt nun der erste Bericht über ein Album von jamendo.com.

Brad Sucks (eigentlich Brad Turcotte) ist wohl einer der bekannteren Künstler auf der Musik-Plattform, jedenfalls hat er seinen eigenen Wiki-Artikel und bietet seine Alben auch bei iTunes Plus an.

Somit ist es auch nicht verwunderlich, dass das Album in einer exzellenten Qualität daher kommt und den Alben aus den CD-Regalen bzw. Online-Musikläden in Nichts nachsteht. Im Gegenteil zu vielen Künstlern merkt man hier außerdem, dass da jemand mit richtiger Leidenschaft am Werk ist.

Die Musik ist eine Mischung aus Pop und Rock, wobei letzteres doch überwiegt und den Titeln einen ganz eigenen, sehr lässigen Charakter gibt.

Besonders hervorheben würde ich Work out Fine und Dirtbag, die beide seit kurzem ein Teil meiner Playlists sind, die ich auf keinen Fall missen möchte. Sich (Nach-)Mittags nach der Schule aufs Bett zu legen, den Gitarrenklängen zuzuhören und einfach nur zu entspannen ist ein wahrer Luxus.  

Insgesamt ist das Album zwar durchaus facettenreich, jedoch hätten meiner Meinung nach ein paar Titel etwas mehr “Härte” gut vertragen. Aber gut, Rock muss ja nicht immer gleich so agressiv sein und deshalb kann ich auch damit gut leben.

Da es das Album außerdem für komplett umsonst gibt, kann man überhaupt nichts falsch machen.

Fazit: Coole Gitarrenklänge, coole Stimme, einfach zurücklehnen und zuhören.

Un tuffo tra alcune sonorità decisamente indie-rock. Qualcosa di diverso dal solito ES, che spero gradiate.

E’ il primo artista che ho scovato su jamendo e subito rimasi stupito per la qualità delle canzoni. Indagando poi sul suo sito web rimasi piacevolemente colpito dal rilascio, insieme al disco, dei sorgenti stessi in modo da permettere alla gente di remixare e magari inviargli i lavori prodotti… insomma una sorta di open source music.

Da allora ho sempre seguito il suo blog aspettando con trepidazione il nuovo album ed ascoltandomi i demo che maturavano nel tempo. La scorsa settimana finalmente è uscito il nuovo disco!!

Lavoro più maturo del precedente, ancora più curato nei particolari propone un rock indie un po’ scanzonato che mi ha subito conquistato e quindi vi propongo il pezzo di apertura come Canzone della settimana!

L’album è scaricabile sia dal sito ufficiale, dove è acquistabile anche il CD, che da jamendo (più probabilmente da altri posti), al solito per chi vuole fare un’offerta…

So Brad Sucks the music 2.0 pioneer is back with his second album Out Of It. Steal it here.

As Brad puts it: “It’s got ten songs, you can pay what you want, it’s available in CD, MP3 & FLAC. There’s no stupid DRM and it’s Creative Commons licensed. CD purchases get instant downloads and the full audio multi-track source will be available in the next day“.

Brad, as some of you probably know, became massively popular with his first album I Don’t Know What I’m Doing giving it away for free in different digital formats. He was also one of the first artists to give away the separate tracks of his songs so people could remix them. For his new release he’s doing things the same way:

“A lot’s changed since I started putting music on the Internet way back in 2001. Artist-endorsed free downloads were shocking. Flexible pricing was still an untested novelty. It was rare to find source files from artists and sharing music wasn’t encouraged by new artists.

And I honestly couldn’t imagine why I’d do things different. The only reason I, a dude who made an album by himself in a country basement, has had any sort of success is because people took it upon themselves to share my music with their friends. They remixed it, they used it in their videos, they played it on their podcasts, they included it in software and games and it took on a life of its own.”
