Improving browser / player integration

Following on from my earlier post about the role of mobile in the lean forward / lean back worlds, there are a number of ways in which browser / video player integration can be improved and streamlined.

Plenty of you I’m sure will have ideas here.  A few of us in the community have been discussing this already, and a forthcoming blog post will outline these ideas.  If you have any of your own, please feel free to feed them back as a comment.

Many of these improvements rely on experimenting with new ways in which the device and the server can interact – for example to feed back information about bandwidth availability, which the server can use accordingly. 

The key problem here is having a “real” environment in which to test ideas – in other words, a real streaming server.  Fortunately Yospace have helped out here by providing a demo environment on their YospaceCDS product.  So let’s think about exciting new things we can do to enhance mobile video streaming, and get developing!

Note: I’d like to keep the comments to this post free for brainstorming ideas.  If you are having problems getting the demo to work, I’ve created a thread in the multimedia forum.

Our primary target group is TU Delft Students attending OWEE. Among these students we have those from Holland and also those from countries abroad(international students)

After coaching we decided that a possible concept strategy would be to aim to “socially integrate both groups of students using the spoorzone”

The OWEE is centered around drinking and socialising with other students using information sessions, fun games and parties at night. Some students may not be as confident as others to join in on the activities. From the outset they may be more apprehensive to join in. Some may arrive, go to 1 event and fail to have a good time, then dont go to the rest of the events. One idea to encourage the students to interact then keep interacting throughout the week. Firstly, before arriving in Delft, students are referred to an online social network such as facebook where an OWEE group is formed. Here in the group students are encouraged to make contact with other Delft students that they do not know. Students register on the networking site to meet at Delft train station at a particular time. If the students make contact at the train station, they are rewarded with free drink tokens to use at OWEE events. Once at the train station, students can register to meet again at an OWEE event. If they make contact at the party then they are rewarded with more free drink tokens. By making contact on the internet, at the train station and at parties, students are more likely to make friends with students that they do not know. It is possible that if a Dutch student plans to meet with an international student, they will each receive two free drink tokens. If a dutch meets another Dutch student they will only receive one free drink token each. This way it encourages the Dutch students to meet with Internationals.

At the train station there must be a specified meeting place for the students with a computer to register their meetings and someone to give out the drink tokens. The meeting place could provide maps with personalised information marked out such as the student’s accommodation, their faculty building, a place for the student to buy a bike and even the locations of the OWEE parties. These maps could be personalised with the aid of staff at the meeting place.

At the meeting place, students with internet and GPS on their phones may be able to register themselves in an OWEE augmented reality network so that wherever they are in Delft they can find where all the other students are partying.

The concept still need further work and we have not decided that this will be part of our final concept at this point. We are mostly certain that the central theme will concern networking and trying to extend the group of friends of each OWEE student as well as making the train station a useful and informative environment.

I’ve been thinking, if those hassles between Google and Rupert Murdoch and Bing end up with the de-index of News Corps from Google, then it will hurts News Corps badly. Everyone with a business orientation shall see this as business opportunity.

Murdoch’s move is bad already, since many will think the sam way as me. Innovate Murdoch, not remove yourself from the internet. That’s not the way in internet.

Depois de uns tempos afastado, este blog volta à ativa…

Durante toda esta última semana rolou a Semana Sant’A de Comunicação na UniSant’Anna.

Quinta-feira, especialmente, foi um dia bem bacana. Após a exibição do excelente Sonho Tcheco (2005) houve um debate em torno do tema do filme e do que chamamos de propagandas fantasmas.

Para quem não assistiu, Sonho Tcheco é um inusitado TCC de dois alunos de cinema. O tema gira em torno da inauguração de um hipermercado fictício numa República Tcheca às vésperas de se decidir, através de plebiscito, se ingressa ou não na União Européia. Repito: um hipermercado fictício.

Durante uma hora e dez minutos (o filme dura 1h16), assistimos aos dois estudantes mobilizando uma verdadeira massa de profissionais de comunicação para realizar a publicidade de lançamento do Sonho Tcheco, um hipermercado cujos produtos são de primeira linha e os preços são absurdamente competitivos.

Vale ressaltar que o filme se passa num país que saiu de um regime socialista há pouco tempo. Seus habitantes, depois de décadas condenados a passar horas em filas para fazer parcas (e caras) compras, após a queda do regime se vêem diante de uma variedade infinita de produtos, marcas, variedades, preços e condições de pagamento mais atraentes. Eis que surge o Sonho Tcheco, com tudo isso e muito mais.

Do começo ao fim, os momentos se revezam entre o hilário e a agonia. Realmente é divertido assistir àqueles dois malucos usando dinheiro público (isso mesmo!) para produzir a campanha e o filme, ao mesmo tempo em que é triste ver a reação de todos no dia da inauguração: velhinhos, crianças, pais de família.

Pra quem odeia (ou inveja) os publicitários, mais alguns argumentos facilmente rebatíveis. Para os estudantes de Publicidade e Propaganda, um alerta e uma lição.

Vale a pena conferir.

Dal  questo privilegiato osservatorio che mi permette di scrivere e di esprime osservazioni ed idee rendendole pubbliche, mi sento in dovere di chiarire, oggi, in tempi non sospetti, che per quanto mi rigarda da iscritto alla FIOM/CGIL al prossimo imminente congresso di base sosterrò il documento denominato: “La CGIL che vogliamo” di cui il primo firmatario è Domenico Moccia segretario nazionale dei bancari di CGIL, assieme ad altre compagne compagni come: Carlo Podda della Funzione Pubblica, Gianni Rinaldini della FIOM, Maurizio Scarpa della FILCAMS oltre a Giorguio Cremaschi della Rete 28 Aprile.

Insomma, come scritto dal titolo,  sto con Moccia, ma non tanto per il fatto che condivido tutto al 100% della mozione da lui sottoscritta, peraltro la CGIL che io vorrei, in realtà, si è disciolta da tempo, almeno dalla cosiddetta svolta dell’EUR del 1978, da quando, in pratica il salario non è più una variabile indipendente, quindi, non l’ho neppure conosciuta, visto che stavo compiendo il mio quattordicesimo compleanno, quanto invece, per puro realismo che mi porta almeno a non contribuire  a peggiorarla più di quanto, appunto, da oltre di trent’anni si stia già facendo.

Venendo al sodo, dunque, la mozione si struttura attorno tre parole chiave che nel mio piccolo ritengo fondamentali per il ruolo del sindacato: il conflitto, la democrazia, la radicalità.

1)  Partire dal conflitto tra capitale e lavoro: capire la natura della fase storica in cui viviamo e della crisi in atto, è una necessità fondamentale per quella parte della società che la CGIL intende rappresentare. Senza questa analisi di fondo, gli interessi delle lavoratrici e dei lavoratori, stabili o precari, vecchi o giovani, donne o uomini, italiani o stranieri che siano, non hanno altrimenti altra alternativa che quella rappresentata dal nuovo modello contrattuale sottoscritto nel gennaio di quest’anno tra Governo, Confindustria, CISL, UIL, UGL, al quale giustamente la CGIL non ha voluto partecipare, ritenendo che tale modello vada a modificare la natura stessa del sindacato in un’agenzia di servizi e collocamento,  facendo così pagare la crisi proprio ai più deboli, consegnandoli,  cioè,  ad un futuro di precarietà e povertà strutturale.

2) La democrazia come pratica e metodo del confronto interno all’organizzazione e tra le organizzazioni sindacati, ma soprattutto con la base delle lavoratrici e dei lavoratori, per attuare le linee decise, portare a concretezza le vertenze e dare gambe alle idee.  Per ribadire, in pratica, che il rifiuto di un modello contrattuale e di un tipo di società, debba avvenire mediante le  lotte, le mobilitazioni,  le iniziative adeguate, con l’obbiettivo più generale di chiudere una volta per tutte, con il sistema della concertazione che tanti danni sta causando ai lavoratori.

3)  La conflittualità e la democrazia hanno bisogno di radicalità nelle scelte e nei principi, ecco dunque, come spiega lo stesso Moccio: “la necessità di mettere in campo un soggetto che si faccia carico di smantellare le tre forme che il capitalismo ha in questi decenni consolidato: il primato dell’economia come motore della storia; il primato del capitale nella struttura dell’economia; il primato del mercato”.

Ecco perché sto con Moccia, ben sapendo che non sarà certo una passeggiata.

Post-Its! Brainstormens ven

Nok alle har efterhånden hørt om eller deltaget i en brainstorm. Men de færreste har deltaget i en der var god. En brainstorm skal laves ordentlig ellers går meningen af den. Der findes mange måder at gøre det på men der kan stikkes nogle generelle retningslinjer ud: 1) Afsæt begrænset tid. Pres kreativiteten. 2) Ingen censur! Fyld alt på. Ting der virker dumme nu kan blive til geniale ideer hen af vejen. 3) Gør den visuel så alle kan deltage. Din idé kan KUN føde gode ideer hos andre hvis de ser den! 4) Klare grænser. Definer HVAD man brainstormer på… så kan man også nemmere bryde grænserne

En model at brainstorm over er “den negative brainstorm”. Skal I fx. finde frem til hvad jeres næste projekt skal være, stiller I spørgsmålet: Hvad ville verden dårligste projekt være? På den måde tømmer man hjernen for negative tanker og fordomme. Når brainstorm-tiden er gået kigger man på resultatet og vender det 180 grader. Eks.vis: Verdens dårligste projekt er et projekt som ikke gør noget for nogen, og spilder alles tid = et godt projekt er relevant og alle lærer noget.

En anden model er “100 ideer på 5 minutter”. Alle skal tegne eller skrive 100 ideer på 5 minutter, opgaven kan selvsagt ikke løses, men det er ikke pointen. Ideen er at de 10-20 første ideer er dem man har gået rundt med i et stykke tid. De er fyldt med forventninger og ens egen agenda. Men når man ikke længere har nogle umiddelbare ideer så slår hjernen fra, og man tegner eller skriver frit efter hvad der nu lige opstår. Underlige ting, som man ikke pt kan se et projekt i, kommer med i bunken af ideer. Når tiden er gået skal man præsenterer alle ens ideer for gruppen. De første er gode men meget fastlåste. Men de sidste ideer er spontane og ikke gennemtænkt. Det er her andre pludselig ser noget genialt, når du viser en tegning af en baby der spiser dåse-tun… for en af deres tegninger passer underligt nok som en puslespilsbrik til netop denne tegning. Koblingerne er hvad der giver gode ideer i denne model… prøv det! Denne model kan iøvrigt være meget underholdende med alle de underlige tegninger.

Nel corso che sta seguendo ha ricevuto delle lezioni sulla legislazione dei blog ed ha avuto paura di avere delle possibili ripercussioni legali per una serie di motivi:

a) sembra che “Eatonite” sia un marchio registrato Eaton – hanno chiamato così la loro  stellite -

b) l’amministratore è responsabile per qualsiasi commento offensivo, calunnia o violazione di copyright da parte degli utenti, specie se questi non forniscono i loro dati (almeno nome e cognome)

Che dire? Personalmente penso che certe paure siano state eccessive. Se le regole fossero veramente così rigide, l’90% dei blog dovrebbe chiudere, per non parlare di Youtube e Facebook. Sui copy right, per quanto ne so io, i problemi sorgono solo se ci sono soldi che girano: la rete è piena di siti non ufficiali di fan e di amatori delle più svariate categorie. Male che vada, prima di partire con una causa di solito viene spedita una diffida che intima di cancellare o cambiare un determinato materiale, specie se si ha a che fare con dei morti di fame come noi.

Ma  il dominio è di Tom, lui lo paga e lui può chiuderlo.

Tuttavia ci sono delle cose che mi sento di dire sul “come” è stato fatto tutto questo, specie perchè sia io che Alpe siamo rimasti parecchio male. Come premessa tengo a precisare che nessuno di noi ha chiesto Eatonite, lavoravamo sul Google group quando Tom con parecchio entusiasmo ed insistenza si è offerto di mettere a diposizione il suo dominio, ci ha fatto editori prima ancora di dircelo.

Sin dall’inizio della redazione del blog ce ne siamo occupati io ed  Alpe  e credetemi, non è stato un lavoro da poco. Mesi di ricerche editoriali, impaginazioni, traduzioni, resoconti, centinaia di articoli buttati via.

Questo perchè da un giorno all’altro il Eatonite è stato chiuso, senza preavviso, senza una nota di spiegazione. Sinceramente non è stato molto rispettoso nè per noi nè per il nostro lavoro.

Per fortuna sono riuscito a salvare 2 mesi di lavoro nel magazine mensile .pdf  ”Eatonite Today” che aggiornavo di giorno in giorno.

Mese dopo mese siamo arrivati ad una media di  150 connessioni giornaliere (circa) con ospiti dagli USA, Israele, Turchia, Russia, Polonia.

Tutti persi.

Perchè chiaro, io per primo se cerco un sito e per tre giorni consecutivi mi appare la scritta url not available, cancello il link e non ci provo più; perchè  il sito non esiste più.

Comunque morto un papa se ne fa un’altro.

Su wordpress.com abbiamo aperto in poche ore un nuovo dominio. L’abbiamo chiamato l’Eatoniano (così  escludiamo a priori l’uso di un trade mark). Praticamente è strutturato come il vecchio Eatonite, con le stesse categorie. Tutti potranno commentare liberamente. Se qualcuno ha piacere di diventare un autore c’è lo segnali. Da quanto ho potuto constatare, questa è l’unica differenza con il vecchio Eatonite:

per iscriversi occorre un nostro invito (ma non per commentare e sottoscriversi, cioè ricevere via mail post e commenti nuovi).

Ah! Tanto per chiarire, quest’ultimo punto non l’abbiamo scelto noi, è wordpress.com che funziona così.

Bene, speriamo sia un proficuo nuovo inizio.

Tas atradās Slokā, vecas, pamestas rūpnīcas teritorijā. No izpostīto rūpnīcas ēku jumtiem pavērās brīnišķīgs skats uz Jūrmalas mežiem, Lielupi un citām ēkām, šī teritorija bija ar savu noskaņu. Staigājot pa to, apskatot rūpniecības ēkas, cehus, aplūkojot atrastās grāmatas, kartes, gāzmaskas un citas lietas, varēja sajust, kā šeit ir izskatījies agrāk, kā šeit ir strādājuši cilvēki, kā pie rakstāmgalda ir sēdējuši priekšnieki un dresējuši savus padotos… Iespaidīgi, lai neteiktu vairāk… Ne velti šajā vietā arī mūsu, latviešu grupa Prāta Vētra uzņēmusi klipu vienai no savām dziesmām.

Mēs rūpnīcu gribējām parādīt arī citiem, tāpēc tapa šis Geocaching slēpnis. Jau pirmajiem apmeklētājiem tas patika. Kādam apmeklējums saistījās ar skaisto skatu no jumta vai ekstrēmu kāpienu skurstenī, cits atradis ķīmijas laboratoriju ar dažādiem traukiem, preparātiem, cits pamanījies uztaisīt labu fotosesiju, cits mucis no apsarga vai uzdūries vietējo iemītnieku – bezpajumtnieku miteklim, dažam tas varbūt bijis tikai ķeksītis par atrastu slēpni. Taču, katram šī slēpņa meklēšana vairāk vai mazāk bija piedzīvojums. Arī man šī bija mīļākā šāda veida vieta, ne reizi vien esmu turp devies, lai ar draugiem izdzertu kādu kōliņu, papiknikotu uz jumta, pafotografētu, nomestu kaut ko no jumta, taču acīmredzot tam ir pienācis gals.

Spriežot pēc pēdējiem ierakstiem slēpņa lapā, rūpnīcas teritoriju kāds ir nopircis. Jau šovasar pamanīju, ka no turienes lielos daudzumos tiek vests prom metāls, bet tagad tur esot pat aizliegums ieiet, tiek grautas nost ēkas. Par to, protams, nedrīkstētu sūdzēties, jo kuram gan vajadzīga šāda, pat diezgan bīstama vieta… Tāpēc lai top zaļā gaisma attīstībai, cerēsim, ka šajā vietā izaugs kas sabiedrībai noderīgs, nevis paliks drupu kaudze.

Slēpnis bijušajā Slokas celulozes un papīra rūpnīcā nostāvēja vairāk nekā gadu, to oficiāli atraduši 197 slēpņotāji un, domājams, tas savu misiju ir izpildījis godam.

The search buttons have become blue and the overall look is a bit like that of Google Wave. More significant is the redesigned search results page which features an always-on sidebar for narrowing search results by type, date and view.

Pesquisando sobre mapas mentais, (uma metodologia  organizada e eficaz de realizar brainstorm,  que se vale de estudos que visam entender como o nosso cérebro faz as sinapses, e com base nestes estudo tem uma metodologia para facilitar a escrita de um brainstorm, de maneira que as idéias se tornem mais acessíveis), encontrei o seguinte site: www.text2mindmap.com.

Já trabalhei antes com softwares de mind map, mas todos no formato tradicional, ou seja, aqueles que você baixa o arquivo e instala no seu computador.

A grande diferença deste  em especifico é que tudo pode ser feito on-line, ou seja, se produz o mind map on-line, formata ele com a cores e tamanho de forma desejados, e quando estiver pronto o site gera um arquivo em jpg para que você possa enviar o brainstorm para quem quiser.

Why can’t you Indonesian stand behind him, support what he already said, already decided?

What’s with these analysis on his speech, protests to his speech? I’m afraid that all you want is the President to speak only what you want to hear. You don’t even have a full knowledge on what really happened. Oh, wait. What? Media has full coverage on this? And you use it as your base knowledge?

I really respect Polri who has acted quickly as a respond to what President has said. That’s what I’m talking about: just do what you got to do and do it quickly.

Give the President the best of you to support him. Afterall, you chose him to be your leader.

I’m lucky enough to be able to play with those three applications on my Mac. Pages and OpenOffice are both native application for Mac while Microsoft Word is a Windows application that I have to run under Parallels Desktop. It’s been two years since the first time I used them and I think it’s the time to say that cross platform compatibility is my biggest issue. It doesn’t matter what application you use to create the document, if you want your receivers to get the same feels, looks, and even effects you have to make sure that they use the same application. Or, the other way around.

The hardest part of all is to make sure that numbering format, indentation, and graph and data format is all same within those three applications. Somehow, there will always be formatting loss if you export them i.e. Pages and OpenOffice) to doc format (I’m afraid that most of my clients and customers are using Word, so let’s assume that doc is a standard format on this matter).

Personally I prefer Pages for its user friendly interface and easy usage that let you focus on the work to complete. But there is no use of a complete work when at the end you realize that your client can’t get the report as you want it to be. Again, that’s the main problem. And you absolutely can’t tell your clients that they use a “different” application. That won’t work.

In an effort to overcome this problem, I always (at least for the last one year) use minimum formatting option. A plain text with standard format is always welcome in every application in every platform. That means standard fonts, standard numbering (though it still has big issue on Word and OpenOffice), justified alignment, and manual heading. For graph and data insertion, I always use picture instead of graph or data itself. In this case, those abundant features are useless. And it’s not just in Pages. The abundant features lie within OpenOffice is also useless.

Having this applied for almost a year, I’m beginning to think what use of those other highly-sophisticated-features lies within each application. How many of you really use other than simple standard feature to complete your work? Why can’t they focus on compatibility and inter-operability to mitigate this effect?

I believe that this is going to be a major issue for the following years, especially when online collaboration replaces the way we work. Compatibility is my highest consideration point. Google, which I consider as competitor in office productivity application with their Google Docs, has an advantages on this matter. However, Indonesia won’t be ready for full online collaboration. Offline is still an option for Indonesia user. So I think Google should also consider this compatibility point, especially during conversion to another format.

On Sunday I went to Nottingham to see the Arctic Monkeys Live and they were fucking amazing!. I preferred the much up tempo songs such as “pretty visitors” and “View from the afternoon” as oppose to “Cornerstone” because the immense noise and power in their performance. The classics were met with Sweaty moshing and a collection of voices.  All though the best song by far in my opinion was “pretty visitors” so here it is in its raw form.

The Indonesian Mining Association fears mining investment could fall below $1 billion this year due to uncertainty over the new law, although the government has said investment from mining, including geothermal, could surpass $2 billion.

New Mining Law was signed on September by former Mining and Energy minister, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, which limits the use of contract mining to specific tasks. The regulation applies immediately to new mining project while existing mining company shall have three years period for adjustment.

The application of new mining law to existing mining company, IMO, will increase the need for huge, and I mean extra huge, capex especially within these three years period. There will be, at least, requirements of (1) capex to acquire new mining equipments to increase the production, and (2) capex to acquire mining equipments as replacement to contractor’s equipments.

Hiring new people with good competency will also become a great challenge. Other than the increasing of cost, the challenge lies in the organization structure complexity. Imagine moving contractor’s organization into the existing organization of mining companies. This will reduce the organization flexibility to adapt to changes in mining industry. Furthermore, this is somehow out of step with global trends. Mining companies globally are seeking ways to effectively slim down the organization.

How do we overcome the challenges and anticipated to changes?

To this matter, there are several strategic objectives that must be done to anticipate the changes, that will emphasize on (1) improve the organization development and human resources development, (2) enhance online collaboration as IT base function, (3) business process improvement, (4) increase customer delight, and (5) economic value added improvement.

Improve the organization development and human resources development. The elaboration of the organization culture actually lies within the organization vision. However, vision is not enough. Key to the success of organization development is the ability to translate the vision into operational terms through out the organization and act upon it. Along the way of developing the organization, human resources development shall also be developed. At minimum, I propose three stages implementation, which are recruitment and fulfill the organization requirement – from top to bottom, increase competency level and mitigate the effect of competency gap, and retain the best people. One stage can be added during five years to the end of the life of mine project that is selling the expertise of the best people.

Enhance online collaboration as IT base function. I truly believe that the IT key issue in the following years is to enable people to collaborate to manage single task or single project. Cross-function, cross-platform, and different time zone are challenges that people have to deal during the course of the project – this is where a collaboration tools is required and to be managed as the IT base function.

Business process improvement. The strategic initiatives are increase the production volume and reduce the cost.

Increase customer delight. Delight is beyond satisfaction. The key is to be able to predict the need of customers even before they realize that they need something.

Economic value added improvement. Two things only: prudent investment and manage cost and risk.

Why is corruption a problem?  We shouldn’t think of opposing corruption because we’re goody-goodies and corruption is wrong.  We fight corruption because it hurts what we most want to achieve in society. Corruption slows economic progress. Countries with more corruption have less investment, and each dollar of investment has less impact on growth.  Corruption hurts the poor, not the rich.
