Tipsbladet: http://tipsbladet.dk/artikel/spil/hvor-laenge-er-keane-traktorfoerer

Sky coverage to benefit the clubs and football fans – but at what price?

Many readers will be aware that on Friday, the first of this season’s football matches between the two Sheffield clubs takes place at Bramall lane.

Wednesday won both games last year so with United looking for revenge it will hopefully be a decent match. If you haven’t got a ticket then the good news is that the match is live on Sky; this has also meant that kick-off has been moved to 7:45pm on Friday night.

Having the match at this time may not be such good news for businesses in the city. If previous derby days are anything to go by, it is likely that for safety reasons, police will request that many pubs in town stay closed and only pubs in the suburbs will be allowed to show the match. So pubs in town will lose out on their normal Friday night trade and people with no interest in football could potentially be caught out when they find themselves locked out of city centre venues.

This weekend also marks the start of fresher’s week for both Sheffield and Hallam university so as as well as the students returning to the city, some may be arriving here for the first time. Not a great first impression of the city centre.

How much do football clubs get from the broadcast of a match on Sky? It would be interesting to compare this figure to the amount that city centre venues estimate they would lose by being forced to stay shut on a Friday night. Don’t forget, this is also during a recession that is reportedly claiming upto 50 pubs a week.

A Saturday lunchtime kick-off may have been a better idea, with less chance for excessive pre-match drinking and plenty of cooling-down time before the pubs reopened later on. But it looks like this arrangement didn’t suit Sky and United/Wednesday’s business models – which are obviously of more importance than the business models of Sheffield city centre pubs.

The constant cacophony of noise surrounding Tommy Smith and his future as a Watford or Reading playe

The constant cacophony of noise surrounding Tommy Smith and his future as a Watford or Reading player is of concern for many Watford fans. Watford accepted a bid by Sheffield United for £1.8m to take our talisman to Bramall Lane to join best buddy Darius Henderson after rejecting a ‘derisory’ offer from Reading for £800k.

There is an opinion that Tom doesn’t want to move his young family up north after re-settling in the area following his travels to Sunderland and Derby. This is an opinion I share and this of course lends itself to the theory that Reading may make a new offer to lure Tom down the M4.

Does Tom need to leave though? Watford have had a few faces go through the exit door already this summer and the wage decrease and income from transfers will have helped no end.

If the right offer comes in, as proven, it will be accepted, but I don’t think we’re in a position where we need to sell any player. Those who have gone have gone because they were not going to feature in the first xi. And of Severin who we’ve brought in, he’s come on a free and is a direct replacement for Jack Cork.

This saga will of course run, but if, as is to be believed John-Joe O’Toole is on his way to Sheffield United, we will be another few thousand pounds a week lighter and more able to keep hold of Tom. Shedding the fringe players accumulated by Aidy Boothroyd is a big task this summer and one that could act as a springboard for bringing in fresh talent and consolidating the quality that we have at the club.

United trio Danny Welbeck, Danny Drinkwater and Matt James have been named in Brian Eastick’s 18-man squad for England’s upcoming European U19 Championship Elite Qualifying Round.

The Young Lions will take on Bosnia, Scotland and Slovakia at the end of this month for a place at the tournament proper, to be held in Ukraine in late July and early August. The games are to be held in Yorkshire, with Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane, Bradford City’s Valley Parade and Doncaster Rovers’ Keepmoat Stadium playing host to the crucial fixtures.

Welbeck and Drinkwater have been key parts of Eastick’s U19 squad for most of the season, Welbeck even pushing on into the U21 reckoning earlier this year, and he in particular will be desperate to help England qualify for the Championships, having been forced to withdraw from the squad on the eve of last year’s tournament. James meanwhile recieves his first call-up for the U19s, having previous represented the national team at U16 and U17 level. A strong contender for this season’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, James has established himself as first-choice in midfield for the reserves, having started the season as captain of the U18s.

You can view the full squad here – we’ll have full updates on the progress of the three United youngsters and their side in a few weeks time.

My Love Of Football. The Journeyman Returns. My Dad and I went down Bramall Lane this weekend to see

My Love Of Football.

The Journeyman Returns.

My Dad and I went down Bramall Lane this weekend to see Warnock’s return to the promised land. It was the first time in years I’d been to a live football match and it highlighted in acute technicolour everything I love about football.

Love, I think, is the right word. Few other things can inspire such combustible scales of emotion.

Really feeling the force of nature. That does it. Choice moments with choice pieces of music and film when your mind seems to be infiltrated and melded into another form. And sex, when it feels as if a join no longer exists between the two of you.

Its something to do, I think, with vulnerability and awe combining with a sense of belonging and a yearning, however irrational, to possess and control.

This love-affair begins with the walk to the ground. At first, you feel alone until you see another group heading in the same direction. Soon you’ll see someone else with the badge tied round their neck or the stripes across their chest and you join together in unsaid fraternity.

And as the trickle turns to a stream to a flood, you emerge by the ground and dissolve into this seething, crawling mass.

The nerves and the anticipation of it all. The practiced call of wheel-chaired women hawking scarves and the bray of program-sellers, the clanging of the turnstiles, the staccato bellow of the crowd as the announcer calls the names of the players as you emerge to the sight of lurid green, this baize in which a game of chess and a battle of brawl will unfold over 90 short, taut minutes.

Walking down the grimy stairs trying to locate your seat, the stench of burped beer and half-warm munch and sodden grass about to be cut-up by studs. Pushing past men swaying in the gantries, their eyes glazed and Mutley-like after hours in the pub.

The ebb and the flow of the crowd as the game begins, the cries and shouts and moans and flying spittle as we follow the ball, tell a player to shoot or pass, tell the ref how we politely disagree, tell the opposing striker how his missus takes it. A guy stood, his hair ludicrously gelled and a silver curb-chain hanging outside his coat, his back to the pitch and his arms held out either side of him, swallowing in the Kop as we chant our love and commitment to the Blades.

The sense of succumbing to a separate and greater self, a less predictable, living, breathing thing. Shouting out observations to no-one but everyone. Of being nothing and everything.

And the violence. The crouched, clenched violence of married and working men hovers over the game. Some powerful, hungry animal ready to defend its territory.

“Fancy a nip?” my Dad saying as he reaches into his inside-pocket and hands me a hip-flask. A kid of no more than ten sits next to us, seemingly alone, dutifully accepts a swig. A young girl amidst a group of long-servers, their shaven heads like an auxiliary fist. The first goal hits the back of the net and she is lifted and flung from one body to another before settling on her father’s shoulders. The ten-year-old leaps up and down and waves his arms in the air and smiles the width of Sheffield.

The cigarette smoke of half-time hangs in the drizzle. The raking laughs and the jostle of the queues and the steam rising from the food vendors and the Gents.

Second half sees chants and expletives and banter as the visitors start to take a grip on proceedings. We ask Warnock what the score is and we ask Blackwell to give us a wave.

And then they equalise from a corner. A knock down and stab at the far post. The journey-men erupt and we are left without answer.

We begin to recover. The rumble of the plastic chairs as the Kop stands for chances that come and go. Cries of anguish as shots fly over or go wide, kids scrambling to get a hold of the ball.

Our striker is pulled into the mud and the Kop springs into action, leaning and straining over the gantry as we suggest to the ref that justice is done. He points to the spot and we celebrate.

The striker tees up the penalty, shoots.

The ‘keeper reaches it and pushes it towards the post. A hum of expectation dissipates in a millisecond to intense disappointment. But Beattie follows it in and smashes it home and 20,000 sighs erupt into a roar that shakes the Lane.

The journeymen rally as 90 minutes pass. Three minutes of injury time. Whistles and calls to end the match as we start to creak from the pressure. Our winger carries the ball, heads to their corner and goes over as a journey-man slides in hard. We scream for recompense as they gather the ball and begin to break.

They play it down the centre in desperation and the boys give chase. But our lumbering centre-half, a rock until now, slips in the mud and they, those mercenary journey-men, play it forward, prey on the space, knock it down to an emerging midfielder who half-volleys past the sprawling arm of Kenny. Last kick of the ball, 95th minute.

The crowd are like thunder. The ref is escorted off. Blackwell creases and Warnock celebrates in the dug-out and, as we head out into the rain and dark, it feels as if something in Sheffield has just been broken.

Broken beyond repair. Until, of course, when Saturday comes again.

Jonny Evans is unsurprisingly in the Northern Ireland squad for the friendly with Hungary this Wednesday, while Darron Gibson has already been named in Giovanni Trappatoni’s starting lineup for the Republic of Ireland’s friendly against Poland. Somewhat further afield, Manucho and his Angolan team-mates face a trip to South America for a game against Venezuela on Thursday night.

At youth international level, we’ve got five players in action at U21 level and another three in the U19s, all playing tonight. Tom Heaton and Fraizer Campbell will be hoping to be named in Stuart Pearce’s starting lineup as England U21s take on their Czech Republic counterparts at Bramall Lane, while Corry Evans and Craig Cathcart could find themselves lining up opposite team-mate David Gray as Scotland and Northern Ireland U21s meet in Hamilton.

Meanwhile England U19s take on Germany at Colchester United’s catchily-named Weston Homes Community Stadium, with Ben Amos, Danny Drinkwater and Danny Welbeck all included in Brian Eastick’s squad.

The clash with the Czechs at Bramall Lane next Tuesday (November 18) presents both players with a chance to make Pearce’s starting line-up for the first time. Heaton’s two caps and Campbell’s five have all been off the bench, but Pearce has left out a number of his more established players to give some new call-ups a chance and those absentees include Manchester City keeper Joe Hart and strikers Gabriel Agbonlahor and Theo Walcott, putting both United players bang in contention for a starting berth.

Also included in the squad is Wolves’ Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, a former Red looking for his first cap at U21 level, and Leeds United’s Fabian Delph, another new call-up who has been heavily linked with a January move to United (and a number of other Premier League clubs) over the last couple of weeks.
