My favorite tree. I remember when I was little and went to my first (and last) gymnastics class, my teacher asked me what my favorite tree was. I answered “willow” and she hung me upside-down from the trapeze so I could sway like a willow branch. Willow trees are especially pretty when they have frost on their branches. The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has a beautiful willow tree in it’s courtyard with picnic benches underneath it.

As you study the ancient, Jewish scriptures, you may start to notice a mysterious, recurring theme.

As you study the ancient, Jewish scriptures, you may start to notice a mysterious, recurring theme. At one point, you may start to ask “WHO IS THIS?” –

Who was this predicted “Shiloh” mentioned as far back as the Book of Genesis?

“The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples” (Genesis 49:10 NASB).

Who was this coming “Ruler” that the prophet Micah said would be born in Bethlehem, yet preexisted time itself?

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2 (NKJV).

Who was this “Immanuel” (literally, “God-with-us”) who the prophet Isaiah declared would be born of a virgin?

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14 NIV)

Who was this “Redeemer” that Job said would come to save him and the world from death?

“I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth” (Job 19:25).

Who was this prophesied “Son” that would come to earth and be referred to as “Wonderful,” “Counselor,” “Mighty God,” “Everlasting Father,” and “Prince of Peace?”

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder. And his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NKJV).

Who was this “Messiah” (Hebrew: Mashiyach) that the prophet Daniel said would come sixty-nine “weeks” (weeks of years in Hebrew, meaning 483 years) after a decree to rebuild Jerusalem?

“Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times” (Daniel 9:25 NKJV).

Who was this “Root of Jesse” that would offer hope and rest at some future date in time?

“In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious” (Isaiah 11:10 NIV).

Who was this righteous “Branch” that the prophet Jeremiah said would reign as “King” and execute judgment throughout the earth?

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth” (Jeremiah 23:5 NKJV).

Who was this “Son of Man” who God will give an everlasting dominion over all peoples and nations?

“I was watching in the night visions, and behold, one like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed” (Daniel 7:13-14 NKJV).

Once you investigate these scriptures, contemplate their meanings in light of the historic record. Better yet, find an English translation of the Hebrew Tanakh, and read these same ancient scriptures in their full Jewish context.

What’s the common theme? What’s the powerful conclusion?

Something to Think About as we enter this year’s Christmas season,

Randall Niles

The branch concept in Sitecore is a method for creating multiple items at once. A branch consists of a branch item and below that item is several items. All of these items will be created when adding the branch item.

To do this in C# code is very simple:

using Sitecore.Data.Items;
using Sitecore.Diagnostics;

private const string _BRANCH_ITEM = "/sitecore/templates/Branches/MyBranches/MyBranch";

public void Create(Item parent, string name)
{
 BranchItem branch = globalDataFolder.Database.GetItem(_BRANCH_ITEM);
 Assert.IsNotNull(branch, "Could not find Data branch at " + _BRANCH_ITEM);
 parent.Add(name, branch);
}

The BranchItem class wraps the Sitecore item as a branch item. And the standard Add function on an item will take a branch item as parameter, creating the branch as subitems below the item.

As you can see there really is no difference from creating items based on branches compared to items created on templates, as the Add function takes both a TemplateItem and a BranchItem as parameter.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect in worship today. It was the first Sunday in Advent, the beginning of a church season I dearly love, from the Advent wreath and candles to the blue of the paraments. But it was also the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so I thought a lot of families might still be out of town or traveling back in time for work and school tomorrow. Even our organist was out of town, having sequenced all her music on the organ for our traditional service.

Though quiet, it turned out to be a moving morning for me. I focused on the Righteous branch of Jeremiah 33, who we know as Jesus. Our hope is found in the promise of his coming, just as it was for Jeremiah’s audience for whom invasion, destruction and exile were inevitable. Don’t let anyone fool you with the nice words, “Everything will be OK.” Both Jeremiah and Jesus tell us it won’t. Things are bad and getting worse, but we have a Savior who is coming. And that is why we have hope.

Rather than getting swept away in the hurried culture of Christmas preparation, the quiet assurance of Advent has already made an impression on me. I “get it” in a way that I don’t think I did before. I’m getting off the ride and spending some time focusing on the Son of God who came and is coming. Who was here and will be back. Who somehow gives me hope.
