I have been MIA for the last month because I was not pleased with the way the blog was going. My original reason for starting the blog was to record my daily musings, in the morning, when I was drinking my cappuccino. Hence the title. However, trying to do so made me realize that my best thoughts are not always in the morning. The ones I want to share. The ones that, hopefully, make you think too.

Here begins the make over! I thought about a lot of uses for my blog. A lot involved learning to cook, à la Julie and Julia. However, I got this feeling of {that’s been done before}. I have decided this blog can be that, and more.

I think it is important to write everyday. Or share I should say. Weather it be about the newest thing I cooked, song I heard, customer that made me angry, or just the newest idea that popped in my head, I want to share it.

In the last month, I  have celebrated a 23rd birthday, moved into a new apartment and decided that this year is about changes for the better.

Last year was great, Graduation was an experience of a life time. Starting to o work at the family business was a blessing  and a curse. This year I am looking for some new friends that compliment my old friends, a new love, because lets face it, sometimes even when you hope, pray, and dream that you were put into certain situations so that you could be with that one person, sometimes your wishing, hoping, praying and dreaming is in the wrong direction.

Last year I applied to one of the most prestigious art programs in the nation. I did not get in. I was applying for one of six slots. When I got rejected I had no idea why and what I would do. After graduation, I still did not know. Then I met Mr. Twitter. I thought all of it was clear, I did not get in so that he and I could meet and be together. I have not yet been proven wrong on this count. I believe everything happens for a reason. I do not yet know if this is the reason I did not get in, it could be something I do not even see coming. I guess it is time to just sit back and enjoy the show.

If you have ever wondered what it is that your viewers/readers/brand lovers want from your Facebook Page, blog or Tweets then look no further.  MarketingSherpa has just conducted a study into what people want from social media. 

 There will be no huge surprizes to see that people most want to learn about special and sales that are going on, however not far behind the specials they want to hear about your new products and features.  On the Mocks Facebook Fan Page we find that we get the most comments when we post a competition (around 1.2% feedback rate) and also the most impressions (over 10,000).  However when asking fans about new Mocks ranges they also get very involved.  Every page is always going to have people who are there fo the freebees, a bit like when food demostrators cook in the supermarket, here are always people eating, but those buying is a much lower number.  The trick is to not turn your page into a place for freebees (unless that’s what you are all about), but instead offer value to your fans.  If you want to do offers, can you do fan exclusive offers?  Can you give fans the chance to be the first to see new ideas and unveil them like an event?  Think about your audience on your page… what do they want?

I can’t complain about 2009 – it was pretty good to me overall.  

- Work got crazy busy as I volunteered for and received more responsibility – Upside:  mo’ money.  Downside:  the proverbial mo’ problems.

- Mr. Wonderful & I started the year ambiguously, separated but with the possibility of possibilities.  The ambiguity is gone now – the “moving on” has finally become the “moved on”.  There was once a time I thought that would never happen and secretly hoped that it wouldn’t.  Now that it has, the sense of relief is elating.

- I’m quite well now, but 2009 brought a few health scares related to the rollercoaster of my reproductive system in the amusement park that is my body.  I’ll never again assume that unusual pains in my belly are simply the result of overindulgence at Dairy Queen or Arbys (although it can’t be assumed that they’re not either.)

- I met Kerouac in 2009 and he’s been a dream for me:  a prince, kind and unceasingly patient.   We’ve been nearly inseparable from the start and our way together has been so easy that there is this sense of inevitability.  Only time will tell but if I were a betting girl… 

We capped off the year quietly – chinese food, Twilight Zones, movies and champagne.   A lovely, simple way to say goodbye to an emotionally turbulent year that started one way and ended completely differently than I ever imagined.  The next year I believe will be more predictable (she stated boldly and perhaps foolishly) and I’m greatly looking forward to it.  

Life feels pretty good right now.  Welcome 2010.

It’s the devil here, bringing you some news.

When shit gets all fucked, sometimes you just have to start over.  Since this is the DEVIL’S BASEMENT, I thought it would be fitting to get rid of some people who are not the devil.  Like everyone.  Everyone except Monkey…because he writes a pretty good column of informative, unbiased articles on bands who suck balls.  Beware those who pose…he’s a feisty one…

Maybe someday in the future there will be a guest writer or other such thing, but for now, you’re fucking stuck with me and my Monkey.

I was very, very disappointed with Dot Rottens latest release “R.I.P Young Dot”. After his first mixtape, and his excellent work on the O.G’s mixtape “O.G season” this was a  terrible let down. Although i never really rated Dot as one of the top mc’s (he’s at times been a bit to monotonous for my taste) i did rate him as one of the top producers. “R.I.P Young Dot” was the sound of Dot totally loosing it. No it wasn’t one of the worst grime mixtapes made, far from, but it was a  frustrating and boring failure. And after that most of what i heard from Dot, on various youtube vids, was him continuing the very odd theme he started on with “I’m a leader”, some sort of melancholy autotune gone berserk.

For these reasons i didn’t have too high expectations on the release of S.O.O.N. I was really just hoping Dot wouldn’t have gone further down a strange route of undistinguished run-of-the-mill tracks with some autotune singing in the chorus. Fortunately it seems Dot has gotten his head if not completely at least partly back in the game.  It’s obvious already on the first track “Mr baker/Crazy Comments” (after having to listen to a rather annoying attempt at humor from “Mr baker”) that Dot has highly improved his mc skills, both lyrically and flow wise. Here he comes like a grime Eminem, high pitched, fast spitting, fast rhyming, wisecracking. But als0 in more conventional grime mode he’s flow is vastly improved and convey far more emotion than on earlier works, even without crying out in a burst of auto-tune.

But most importantly Dot seem to have recovered his skills as a producer. At times this mixtape burns with creative skill, on more melancholy tracks like “The days”, “Best of me” and “No one knows”, ferocious tracks like “Show me respect” and “Talking the hardest” or simply, in grime terms, refreshingly original tracks like “Two step non step”, and “I’m not stopping”.  At best Dot has a imaginative gifted touch, a innovative and unique style so desperately needed in todays grime.

Some thing are not as good. While in general being ok, moody tracks “I’m  a professional” and “The days” makes me cringe, or occasionally makes me giggle to myself when Dot goes in hard with the autotune singing. It really does sound ridiculous. On “Best of me” i totally loose it, it’s just too fucking weird. Also the guest are not up to the quality of the members of O’G’s he used to spar with, but are  mostly pretty colorless. Only exceptions are Ice Kid, who has two great chilling verses and Voltage, who does well on his own on great bonustrack “No one knows”.

However, this is not a album, but apparently the mixtape before next mixtape, or the album, that will or will not arrive any day now, which may explain a few odd choices. First of all, 22 tracks is too many. 22 tracks is proof you don’t have proper quality control. Theres no reason to have that many tracks. I’d say 15 tracks maximum, give the others away on compilations or as free downloads or whatever. Also most of the tracks not produced by Dot feels out of place and hurt the consistency of the mixtape, none of the Faith SFX tracks are particularly good, Terror Danjahs “Ride for me”  is a quite boring commercial lovesong, only “Theres more to life” over Dizzee Rascals “Brand new Day” really feel at place. There are also some tracks i don’t see any point at all having on here. Brutal’s “Cheating” is hideous, so is “Sex time” with Griminal and Brutal. Please someone explain to me why i would want to hear about other men fucking.

With half the number of tunes i might have considered this a grime classic. It contains at least six or seven tracks i will hold as among the best of 2009. This is the sound of a artist, a artist who’s  found his way home, still perhaps on shaky legs, but with perhaps more promise than anyone i can see in the scene at the moment. I just keep my fingers crossed and hope that he will stay clear of the autotune and the dreadful lovesongs.

Dear Mister Quesada,

I’d like to formally apologize for the snarky aside I made about “Brand New Day” in the panel, even though it’s not on YouTube yet, and according to the modern digital world, it doesn’t exist. I’m not a huge Spidey fan, and I understand the want to maintain character longevity. I just feel like there are different ways to go about it; after all, Daredevil’s been outed twice, disbarred once, and has had several of his girlfriends die on him, not to mention spending time in prison. Granted, there was that whole Clone Saga, but seriously – compared to Ol’ Hornhead, Spidey has it real easy, and not once has Matt Murdock’s life been in need of a retroactive continuity change.

But, through all of that, you see one shining attribute – persistence. Matt Murdock doesn’t give up. Matt Murdock is the Rocky Balboa of superheroes. Sure, he has a radar sense, but other than that, he’s a physically normal human being, trying to stand toe to toe with the Clubber Langs and Ivan Dragos and the Kingpins. He gets beat down, stomped on, pushed to the limits of his sanity – he knows what comes, and he still keeps going. At times, it’s heroic, like Rocky I or IV; other times, it’s tragic, like Rocky Balboa or Rocky II. Other, other times, it’s just plain cheese, like Rocky V. It doesn’t matter. He just keeps going.

I’m positive this is the way with Spidey as well, but to me, Spiderman’s always been emblematic of what young life is. You struggle to find your way in the world, you meet the girl, you get the job, and you make your hard choices. But, at some point, I feel like Spiderman should be changing diapers. That’s just how it goes. You marry the girl, Aunt May dies, and after a long night of tears, you move on. You try to make sense of your life, and that’s where the kid comes in. You find a new purpose to keep doing what you’re doing, until you reach a kind of Quixotic end, where you decide, “You know what? Maybe the best death for a hero is a normal death. A quiet one, with friends and family. Nothing spectacular. No saving babies from a burning building, no brilliant fight to the end. Just the people who matter most.”

That’s the way I feel Spiderman should be. While Matt Murdock is Marvel’s Rocky Balboa – the enduring warrior, persistence in the face of suffering, triumph in the face of adversity – Spiderman is the one who says, “Once you get through it all, and you’ve had your hard times – life is pretty awesome.” He’s George Bailey, right at the end of “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Scratch that – he IS George Bailey. He’s a smart-alecky, swing-from-buildings, fight-the-Goblin George Bailey. He has some rough patches, but either by himself or with a little help, he always gets to swing above the clouds and see the sun.

So, for Matt Murdock’s sake, let Spidey have the kid. Let Aunt May die. While some heroes are made to suffer, and to quote Glenn Danzig, are “born in the soul of misery”, Spiderman is not one of them. He’s the hero that deserves something resembling a happy ending, and I sincerely hope that he gets it.

Om Nom Nom Studios is not technically a new thing. I have had other stores. Two ebay and one other Etsy. My Etsy has been less than a total success in the last years so I decided to make more of a go at what I love and revamp my shop.

Pro-Portional Designs is not officially open just yet. I am currently creating stock and hope to open with no less than twenty items. The target time for store launch is within two weeks of  Thanksgiving 2009.

I previously ran a book blog called Petit Epicurean Ver De Livre, that has fallen somewhat down by the wayside. When it was up and running it was featured on Trashionista as well as Bridal Wave. Life happened and made keeping up with that particular blog nearly impossible.

For the time being this blog will not look quite how I would prefer it did unless I get some help or during one of my breaks I take the time to make this a little more aesthetically pleasing. Please bear with me while I get all the site sup and running at the same time as stocking the store for it’s imminent launch.

Been a bit since I posted thoughts here.  A lot has been going on in life so it is good to capture these thoughts now.  I have been inundated with life events that have put me in a very pensive mood about what where I’ve been, where I am and where I am going in life.  After these last two weeks, today is defintiely a Brand New Day.

When I arrived home yesterday I saw the biggest smile on my wife’s face.  To be welcomed by a big kiss a day after coming home to find that I lost a close relative to a heart attack was definitely a good pick me up.  This may be the beginning of a brand new day on our journey with cancer.  My wife’s joy was from her follow up post-op appointment with her surgeon.  I think her doctors were also relieved to see her smiling as well as she said that they all gave her big hugs.  Yes, my wife was her usual “chatty Cathy” self again, and that meant all was really well.  It just dawned on me that it had been over 18 months since I had seen that excitement on her face.  I had missed her “text” message in which she had told me how happy she was.  She had been in good spirits, mind you, but this was just different.  Some say our journey of survivorship is over, but I think when we look back it has only just begun.

Ingrid Michaelson sang for Breast Cancer at Slide

For example, Ingrid Michaelson, pictured above, sang at a local club last night here in San Francisco with proceed donations at the door going to Breast Cancer Organizations in the Bay Area.  The song ”Be Okay”  has become a feature song in the fight against breast cancer.   She was also part of the Hotel Cafe Tour last year in which the album, Winter Songs, gave $.50 for each sale to breast cancer research.

This past weekend, all of the NFL paid homage to breast cancer and its survivors.  At the 49er game, donations were taken at the gate, referees wore pink, cheerleaders wore pink and players wore pink.  Before the game, 50 breast cancer survivors were introduced to the players.  One of the captains, 49ers QB, Shaun Hill, who wore pink cleats during the game, met with the survivors.  He was later quoted as saying how he had put on the pink cleats without thinking.  He didn’t know anyone with breast cancer, but when he met these women and saw the spirit in their eyes he said it suddenly became real to him and the shoes meant something.  He said it even rattled him a bit before the game started.

And just yesterday I was at the President’s Cup.  Nothing formal was done around Breast Cancer Awareness but a couple of the US players, notably Phil Mickelson and Master’s Champion, Zach Johnson, wore pink ribbons.  Phil’s wife Amy, a native of Northern California, is currently battling breast cancer.  What was readily apparent was that Phil made a point of saying hello and stopping for a second to speak with every person who wore a notably pink cap or ribbon to stop and sign an autograph.  Several elderly women who wore Susan G. Komen shirts were startled as he stopped to say hello and give them each a hug.  It didn’t go unnoticed by me or any of the thousands of spectators who saw this connection and warmth he exhibited especially when compared to other golfers who whisked right by the crowd without any kind of acknowledgement to the screaming fans.

So what does this mean?  To me it is just the sign of how powerful a community of similarity around a single cause can be.  I wish the same thing could be done around heart disease.  Just like the push for a mammogram, perhaps everyone should get an EKG.  With the obese population we have and the number of people who die of heart attacks each year, why shouldn’t we all get one.  I probably need one and my cousin who passed away in his early 50s in his sleep earlier this week could have used one.  I bet his 3 teenage children and wife wish that he could have had one.

These events when they hit so close to home just make me think more about my life in so many ways.  What was the last thing I did with my cousin?  Gave him a High-5 and a hug at the 49ers home opener.  How good does that make me feel?  It helps me feel like my peace with my cousin is there.  It reminded me that when you see someone make sure you leave a good impression with them until you see them again and to remember that smile until the next time you see them.  My cousin and his wife and family are models to me of where I will be in 10 years.  I can’t help but see that in 10 years I don’t want my heart to fail on my own children and leave them fatherless as they just get started with their lives.  It is sad though.  My cousin was my 10 year barometer in life.  His death to me is a kick start to remind myself to do as much as I can to spend quality time with my children and really make sure they know me and my wishes for them.  My life is an open book to them.  No secrets.  My fears and hopes and dreams are there for them to inspect.

My cousin and his wife were the first people we told on my father’s side of the family when my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and they were the first to help out.  My wife and I are beside ourselves about how lucky and fortunate we are to be winning the battle against breast cancer a year later at the same time we are seeing people who seemed so healthy leave us behind.  There is no rhyme or reason it seems.

Female singers have been seen becoming more bold and lascivious in their dressing on the stage lately.

From suggestive and provocative fashion designs worn on stage till fashion malfunction and undesirable exposure during the course of the choreography, all these have gone up to the top of news page of late.

Most recently, we have member HyunA of 4Minute was spotted wearing a minidress too short for her comfort on stage. The dress kept going up during her performance and she was seen constantly pulling it down.

There was even a video uploaded on Youtube on 19th September showing all the different clips showing such exposure of HyunA during various performances.

HyunA’s representative came out to say after the incident, “Underneath the skirt, she did wear safety shorts.” But netizens don’t buy it, “The problem is the shortness of the dress, underwear or safety shorts they are supposed to be worn underneath”, “This is really too much for a young minor to have her under shorts exposed and wear such clothes.”

And then previously, WonderGirls SoHee was also criticised for wearing sleeveless and short hot pants during the group’s Bangkok concert. Netizens have voiced then, “This is too wild for a high school girl” etc. There was also this instance where SoHee had worn a minidress and done a sexy dance performance, and netizens voiced again, “We hope that singers of such tender age do not undergo too much exposure.”

Last month, on Mnet ‘2NE1 TV’, 2NE1 youngest member Gong MinJi (15) was seen wearing a pair of leggings with prints of CareBears in provocative position. This caused an outrage amongst TV viewers to see such a young singer like MinJi wear such a fashion. Fellow member Sandara Park was also seen wearing the same prints.

And last February, member ChaeRin (21) of Brand New Day experienced a nipslip from the tube dress she was wearing while performing on KBS Music Bank. Her company then came out to say, “There was no nipslip. She wore underwear underneath, it only looked like she exposed her chest.” Netizens have voiced out then, “Recently there has been no end to exposure cases”, “Is this just noise marketing?” etc

There was also this incident where member DaHam of group Foxy also experienced exposure of her chest when her bra strap came off during the performance. After that, the incident was the #1 searched on Korean portal sites.

Member Nam GyuRi of group SeeYa also experienced the same incident during ‘Big4 Concert’ in 2006, and also singer solo Ayoomi during her performance on one of the music shows.
