Enio Souza is a designer, consultant and brand strategist, founding partner and creative director at “Human Design & Comunicação”, based in Curitiba.

He is specialized in Branding by Positivo University and he graduated in International Trade by FESP. He also maintains a column about Design in the “Mundo Flexo”, a magazine of national circulation.

What is your impression about a brand called Brazil?

Talking about the “Brazil brand” and what it represents, as a Brazilian, is reviving a multitude of experiences, images and perspectives that awaken joy, enthusiasm and optimism, while they bring concerns, disappointment and uncertainties. It’s all there, gaping in verse and prose in the media, on the streets and in pub conversations.

As a professional in the communication area, I especially like to see Brazil as an amazing and renewable source of inspiration. A spectacular cultural and ethnic melting pot, well mixed and heavily seasoned. The gathering of people from different regions of Brazil still represents a rich exchange, full of surprises, vocabularies and unusual edibles, customs and worldviews completely different.

From North to South, the “Brazils” of Jorge Amado, Ari Barroso and Paulo Leminski, with all the different accents and details, form a nation so multifaceted that it is impossible to think of a single brand, of an idea that represents it.

I have eyes and ears trained by the coexistence and by the artistic ability from my father, from whom I learned to savor Brazil in every kind of manifestation. I see Brazil in the songs of viola (guitar), in the pampas covered in frost, in the “manezinhos of the island” (natives from the city of Florianópolis and region), in the “ground fire”, in the woods, in the Caatinga forests, in the water, in the fruits and the rice fields, on the slopes, in animals, in the sympathy of street vendors, in the rusticity of the “cangaceiros” (bandits), in the simplicity of the “sertanejos” (Sertão area) and the riverside dwellers, in the Tropicalism, in bossa, in the force of entrepreneurs, in Pelé’s magic moves, in the cordel literature, in the genius of Chico Anísio, in the trays of the “baianas” (Bahian), in the debauchery and irreverence of Aldir Blanc, in the baião (Brazilian popular dance)of Gonzaga, in the urbanism of Seu Jorge, in the Alchemy of Hermeto Paschoal, on social metaphors of Chico Science, in the poetry by Chico Buarque, in the melancholic jazz of Hamilton de Holanda, in the fine line form the  curitibano (from Curitiba city) Paulo Brabo, in the improvisation of the “repentistas”, in its international “mineirice” (Minas Gerais way of being) of Toninho Horta, in the vibrant colors of Romero Brito, in Poty Lazarotto panels, in Oswaldo Miranda virtuosity, and so on.

Creativity can be seen everywhere. It seems something acquired, inherited, almost a condition to survive. There are people inventing simple things every day, managing situations the way they can and with the tools the tools they have. People who have learned to live with adversity and to laugh at it, dribbling the life with the dexterity of a scorer.

Brazil, for me, is all this. A unique brand experience in every way, in every contact. It is a free, visual, aural, olfactory, tactile, interactive, global, itinerant and poetic encyclopedia.

Qual é a sua impressão de uma marca chamada Brasil?

Falar  da marca Brasil e o que ela representa, na condição de brasileiro, é reviver uma infinidade de experiências, imagens e perspectivas que despertam alegria, entusiasmo e otimismo, ao mesmo tempo que trazem inquietações, decepções e incertezas. Está tudo aí, escancarado em verso e prosa na mídia, nas ruas e nas conversas de botequim.

Como  profissional da área de comunicação, gosto especialmente de ver o Brasil como uma fonte surpreendente e renovável de inspiração. Um espetacular caldeirão étnico e cultural, muito bem misturado e fortemente temperado. O encontro de pessoas de diferentes regiões do Brasil ainda representa uma troca riquíssima, cheia de surpresas, de vocabulários e comidinhas inusitadas, de costumes e visões de mundo completamente diferentes.

De norte a sul, os Brasis de Jorge Amado, de Ari Barrroso e Paulo Leminski, com todos os diferentes sotaques e particularidades, formam uma nação tão multifacetada que é impossível pensar numa marca única, numa idéia que a represente.

Tenho  olhos e ouvidos treinados pela convivência e capacidade artística do meu pai, com quem aprendi a saborear o Brasil em todo tipo de manifestação. Vejo o Brasil nos ponteios da viola, nos pampas cobertos de geada, nos manezinhos da Ilha, no fogo de chão, nos matos, nas caatingas, nas águas, nas frutas e nos arrozais, nas ladeiras, nos bichos, na simpatia dos ambulantes, na rusticidade dos cangaceiros, na simplicidade dos sertanejos e ribeirinhos, no tropicalismo, na bossa, no vigor dos empresários, nas jogadas mágicas de Pelé, nas literaturas de cordel, na genialidade de Chico Anísio, nos tabuleiros das baianas, no deboche e na irreverência de Aldir Blanc, no baião de Gonzaga, no urbanismo de Seu Jorge, na alquimia de Hermeto Paschoal, nas metáforas sociais de Chico Science, na poesia de Chico Buarque, no jazz chorado de Hamilton de Holanda, no fino traço do curitibano Paulo Brabo, na improvisação dos repentistas, na mineirice internacional de Toninho Horta, nas cores vibrantes de Romero Brito, nos painéis de Poty Lazarotto, no virtuosismo de Oswaldo Miranda, e por aí afora.

A criatividade pode ser vista em todo lugar. Parece algo adquirido, herdado, quase uma condição para sobreviver. Tem gente inventando coisas simples todos os dias, se virando do jeito que dá e com as ferramentas que tem. Gente que aprendeu a conviver com a adversidade e a fazer graça dela, a driblar a vida com a destreza de um artilheiro.

Brasil,  para mim, é tudo isso. Uma experiência de marca única em cada passagem, em cada contato. É uma enciclopédia viva, visual, sonora, olfativa, tátil, interativa, global, itinerante e poética.

O projeto que integrará os quatro estados do Nordeste (Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco e Alagoas) beneficiados pela duplicação da BR 101 será apresentado durante o Salão de turismo Rota 101Nordeste, programado para acontecer entre os dias 04 e 06 de julho, no Centro de Convenções de Natal.

O secretário ressaltou a importância da participação da secretaria no lançamento do evento. “O turismo está se desenvolvendo em muitos destinos do Brasil, logo, precisamos fortalecer o fluxo turístico regional e  nada melhor do que integramos os quatros estados nesta  iniciativa”, afirma Bezerril

What do you look like? Do you have the best impression of yourself? Thinking about that, Dove and agency Ogilvy Brazil hired an FBI-trained forensic artist to interview and draw seven different women – two sketches of each. For the first sketch, he asked them to describe themselves. The second was based on a description from another person these women had just met before this experience. Everybody was behind a screen where the artist could not see them.

“Women are their own worst beauty critics,” Dove says. “Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful … we decided to conduct a compelling social experiment that explores how women view their own beauty in contrast to what others see.”

At the end of the video, the artist reveals two sketches — one from the participant itself, one from their partner. Prepare to be surprised with the differences between them. The end is shocking!

The conclusion Dove came to is: we are more attractive than many of us think about ourselves!

Today was our first day of class. We had our lecture on the third floor, overlooking the ocean, and we had a productive discussion about the anthropological meaning of culture. We compared ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, and I realized that I need to be better at not judging or ranking other cultures but rather just appreciate the differences and learn what I can from them. During the afternoon, we went on a field trip to Pelourinho, the historic district of Salvador. After a crazy bus ride where we got to chat with some members on a mission from the Church of Latter Day Saints (they spoke English), we arrived and toured a church, a museum, and the lower part of Salvador, which we reached by taking an elevator! It was pretty neat.

The picture I took was from inside the Igreja do St. Francis. It doesn’t really do justice to how ornate the design was. Apparently, it is one of the only remaining churches designed from the Baroque period that wasn’t updated when the neo-classical period came around. I’ve visited churches in Europe, but I’m not sure I’ve seen one so adorned in gold. It was built during the height of Brasil’s history, the mid-18th century, and our guide said that the gold in the church was such a tiny fraction of the gold Brasil was mining and trading at the time. It was beautiful, yes, but it really got me thinking about the value society puts on various commodities. What function does gold in a church serve? Sure, it makes it pretty to look at and may motivate people to attend this church instead of the one down the street, but I don’t really think that is the point of religion. Of course, money must be spent on maintaining infrastructure and to sustain the bureaucracies that help the Church function efficiently, but I think this is a very clear example of money and resources that were spent too lavishly. I wonder how many of the poor, sick, and hungry could have been taken care of with the cost of the goods and labor used to decorate the interior of the church- a task that took over 25 years NOT including the time it took to actually build the church. It’s kind of sickening to think about. However, it has definitely reminded me that I need to integrate myself into the new community I will move to in August and make sure I donate my time and money to help those who are suffering.

Sorry for the gravity of this post. I have been mulling over whether or not to post about this, and we all have been following the news and social media regarding the tornados in Oklahoma. The mood is a bit heavy anyway, so I figured that I might as well get a serious post in.
