I love Twin Light Tap House. I’ve said it before, and I will say it again. If you haven’t been there, go immediately. Anyways, Katie and I ended up there (as usual) and I was having issues with choosing a beer. This time, it wasn’t because there were all these ones I hadn’t reviewed. It was, yet again, because I had reviewed all of them but two (on tap). I had never heard of this beer, but it was described to me as a peach lambic that wasn’t a fruit bomb. Okay, twist my arm…

ABV: 8.5%

Style: Fruit/Vegetable Beer

Trivia: According to the brewery website, “Created many years ago by students as a cocktail, the Pêche Mel’Bush was originally a mix of equal parts BUSH Amber and peach gueuze. Brewed since 2009 by the Brasserie Dubuisson with the same rigour as the other Bush beers, made to an original recipe based on natural peach extracts, the Pêche Mel’Bush has what it takes to satisfy everyone who likes fruit-flavoured beers with character. The natural flavourings and extracts of the fruit complement the original bitterness of the Bush Amber to create a rounded and perfectly balanced beer.”

Random: I think that I need to start collecting more glasses from different breweries. I really don’t have all that many.

This beer poured into the glass with a sexy, one finger white head. It dissipated quickly and left no lacing on the glass (not as sexy). The body was a clear, dark orange color with huge amounts of seltzer-y carbonation on it. Then, I got to the nose. Wow. Absolutely amazeballs. It was teeming with fresh peach. Katie also got the same beer and was amazed at how good it smelled. The taste, if at all possible, was even better than the nose. It was peach and apricot up front, and then some woody dryness at the end. I didn’t expect this at all. When I hear “lambic,” I think lots of fruit and borderline syrupy sweet. This was incredibly drinkable with lots of different flavor notes. The body was medium thickness with high amounts of carbonation. The booze was insanely and dangerously hidden. The finish was long with lots of fresh peach. This beer just floored me (and Katie, who also loved it). This was a definite A+ beer for me. I would have this again in a second.

We started off this beercation with (what else?) a welcome aboard beer toast. We toasted with a Wieckse Witte a Witbier at 5.00% abv, brewed by the now defunct De Ridder Brewery.

Wieckse Witte

This toast was followed with a gourmet lunch in which our chef used this beer to prepare both the appetizer and the main meal, which was spectacular.

After we had our whistles wetted and our stomachs satisfied, we headed off to visit In de Vrede, the pub at the Abbey Sint-Sixtusabdij van Westvleteren.

After tasting these world class beers, some of the group visited the Claustrum, which is an exhibition room where you can get a feel about a monk’s life in the abbey.

We left In de Vrede and walked across the street to the Abbey. We found out that our timing was amazing, since that day, for the 1st time they would be selling 3 packs (one 12, one 8 & one Blonde) to the general public in the area where the cars usually pick up their crates of Westvleteren beer.

Normally you can only buy this beer either by the 6 pack at In de Vrede, if available, (and not on a Saturday, when we were there) or by the crate at the Abbey by making a reservation in advance by phone only. So, to our delight we were able to purchase a few 3 packs from the monks along with some Westvleteren infused chocolates!

Lichtervelds Blond

Lichtervelds Blond is a Tripel at 9.0% abv and is made almost exclusively for the town of Lichtervelds.

Else explained that 80% of their production of this brew, which is made once per year, is given to the town of Lichtervelds for a festival, with the other 20% kept at the brewery to be sold only for consumption onsite.

Our 2nd surprise came after discussing Christmas beers and questioning when the 2010 Stille Nacht would be available. To our astonishment, Else pulled out of the refrigerator a bottle from their 1st bottling of this year’s version, which was bottled only 3 days prior. She confessed that she and her husband Kris hadn’t even tasted this year’s batch. They were going to save that bottle to taste that evening, but fortunately for us, they were kind enough to share it with us!

This year’s batch is fantastic and was less sweet then the past few years, which made this one extremely drinkable. I would suggest finding this brew to drink now and to save a few to age.

By the way, Kris is not only a fantastic brewer, but a fabulous artist. Throughout the brewery and bar area you can see his artwork.

After dinner on the barge, which was as good as you would find in a 3 star Michelin restaurant, some of us went on a beer hunting expedition to ‘t Brugs Beertje .

Before we got a chance to look of the beer menu, Filip & I exchanged early Christmas gifts. I got him the Cigar City Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout from Cigar City Brewing and he got me the Bush Ambrée Triple. This Belgian Strong Pale Ale has a 12.0% abv and comes from Brasserie Dubuisson Frères. This beer was made for the 75th anniversary of Bush.

I paired this beer with: nothing.

Tasted on: Saturday December 05, 2009

Note: This is a great sipping beer & like most Belgian Strong Dark Ales, it improves as it warms up in the glass.

The trademark BUSH has only been registered in a few European countries as in the forties, nobody at the Brewery Dubuisson had imagined this BUSH beer would be sold worldwide.
Afterwards, the Brewery Dubuisson has not been allowed to register the BUSH name in several countries. As a result, our BUSH beer is exported in all other countries under the name of SCALDIS.

Translated from the website from French to English:

La Bush de Noël est née en 1991 pour répondre au souhait des consommateurs à la
recherche d’une bière chaleureuse pour les fêtes de fin d’année

The Bush Christmas was born in 1991 in response to the desire of consumers to looking for a warm beer for the holiday season.

Produced exclusively from malt, hops, candy sugar and water, Bush is a Christmas beer of high fermentation, filtered and containing 12% alcohol by volume.

The extensive use of caramel malt gives it a coppery red dress and a round exceptional.

A special study hopping gives the Bush Christmas consistent flavor, fruity aroma and delicately hopped.

Brewed in limited quantities, the Bush Christmas is a reference in the beer season.

This is the 10th of my daily Christmas/Winter beers which I will be having until Christmas. There are now only 19 more beers until Christmas!
