I just e-mailed the following to MGA Entertainment, which manufactures the Bratz dolls …

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing in regards to one of your toys: Bratz Babyz Lil Dancers. My daughter received one (Cloe, I believe her name was) for Christmas during a gift exchange at her daycare center.

While I could easily question you about the necessity of taking a cute little doll and dressing it up like a low-rent trollop, I am more concerned about the toy’s packaging.

I’m betting that I could tunnel my way into Fort Knox with fewer troubles than it took to remove Cloe from the package.

First, what’s with putting a handle at the top of the package, making it look like you can just lift the top off? After cutting through the multiple plastic tabs holding it in place, I discovered that each one was reinforced by a piece of tape that was nearly impossible to peel back.

Once the lid was pried off, it appeared the doll could simply be lifted out. Alas, this was not the case. I had to use a pair of scissors to cut the thick plastic away from the back, only to discover that Cloe was held in place by her hair via multiple strings tied through the cardboard backing. And once those were removed, I noticed the thick plastic wires binding her feet to the base (it was like some horrible scene out of the movie “Se7en” or one of the “Saw” movies).

The wires around her ankles were the most troublesome, as even my best pair of scissors could not cut through them. I ended up using a knife to cut them off, nearly disemboweling myself in the process. That would not have made for a merry Christmas!

Finally, Cloe was removed and was ready to be enjoyed by my daughter. She was especially excited by the promise that, when turned on, Cloe would dance to music. Only Cloe doesn’t dance. She makes little twitches. I do the same thing when I get over-caffeinated. What a disappointment!

The inclusion of the brush was a nice touch, though. After my daughter’s eyes glazed over after watching Cloe twitch for a few moments, she spent the rest of the evening brushing the doll’s hair.

In conclusion, would you include an industrial strength pair of clippers and a tube of adhesive remover in future products involving your twitching baby hookers line? It would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Scott Meeker

HELLO OUT THERE:

Today I thought I would take a second to entertain you with just a few of the searches that people have been using when they happened to stumble on my blog. More confusing then why you would search these things is why they would happen to link to my blog.

They are:

Pooper Scooper: Well isn’t that just lovely. For some reason google thinks my blog resembles a pooper scooper. I would normally take offense but if it gets eyes to my blog I shan’t complain.

Peg Leg: As I have no peg leg this is a bit confusing for me. I could get a peg leg as a fashion statement. In fact I think I could rock it fairly well if I covered it in leather and studded it with silver. Except I would have to cut off my own leg and I am not really into that whole SAW situation.

Stabbing a “Mother f***ker: I am not kidding. Someone actually searched this and found their way onto my blog. More frighting than the fact that they searched that in this particular case is the fact that some creepy person who wants to “stab a mofo” now has me on their radar. CREEEPPY. In retrospect it may not be a good idea to be mocking such a person now. I am in BIG trouble.

Black Suits for graduation: I don’t wear suits, I am not a man, and my graduation is over. But I like to pretend that google sent this particular query to my blog because I have a keen fashion sense. KEEN.

Those are all the searches I am going to save for now. but I wanted to end this by making things interesting and tagging this post with some really random stuff in the hopes tat I can uncover some people who search even weirder things.

The tags: Santa, Satan, clogs, horns, hat pins, grim reaper, shark, Danny Glover, Meth, Christmas, sugar plums, fleas, Mansfield Park, Ghostbusters, Bratz, bats, snakes, worms, poison, Harry Potter.

I’ll let you know how it goes

What Is It? A computer animated cross between a Shrek-style twisting of faerie tales and a Pulp Fict

What Is It?

A computer animated cross between a Shrek-style twisting of faerie tales and a Pulp Fiction-style story line. Each character tells their story completely, then, we start over from another perspective. Each story is different, but intersects with the other characters and their stories. It’s fun to see things that didn’t make sense before explained later.

The story line is simple. The cops show up to find a tied up grandmother, (Glenn Close) a wolf (one of my favorite voice actors, Patrick Warburton) dressed in her clothes, a little girl in a red hood (Anne Hathaway of the Princess Diaries) and a woodsman (James Belushi) who has recently burst on the sceen with ax in hand. The police think that this mess of fairytale endings will be the key to discover who has been stealing the secret recipe books from all the good ie shops in the wood. Chief Grizzly ( rapper Xzibit , in a part that has nothing to do with hip-hop) just wants to book the wolf, but the frog (David Ogden Stiers) wants to get the real story.

How Was It?

I expected to find this movie lame. The ads did it no favors. I don’t know if this was helped by my lowered expectations, but I found it entertaining. The animation is nothing special (especially with Pixar running around) but the story is creative. I really enjoyed the interacting story lines. The pop culture references were good but not so overwhelming that it bogs down the plot . They more use popular movie/tv short hand in ways you would not expect to see it in a faerie tales. The plot is predictable, but fun.

Is It Good For Kids?

It is made for kids to enjoy with enough other things going on that adults will be ok ay (or have fun), too. There is never a moment where the joke is such that you will just hope your child will “miss it”. There is no cussing and all violence is very much good vs.bad or accidental and very cartoony. (Spoiler) We do find out that the grandmother has lied to her granddaughter about parts of her life. This is shown to hurt the relationship, but they do work it out. Beyond that, Red seems to be a “teen” character. She is updated to be hip Still yet , her shirt MAKES IT ALL THE WAY TO HER PANTS !!! Not only that, she’s going for the ultra hip – and ultra modest – bell

bottom jeans with a denim skirt.(Hopefully Red will be a good influence on Jasmine, Ariel, and those “Bratz” dolls.)

You can get a complete breakdown of what is on the screen at Screenit.com.

How about Spiritual Issues?

The wolf makes the statement “With God as my witness, you will learn to speak ” to the fast talking chipmunk. There is also a character who claims a witch has put a spell on him, but he then does something that proves there is no spell, but pretends not to notice so he can continue with his funny quirk .

The real lesson is “don’t judge a book by its cover” wh ich can have a spiritual application, especially if you bring up verses like John 7:24 .

What Is Your Recommendation?

If you have kids who would want a fun, bright film, or teens who are up late with alot of soda, this would be a good one to rent.

Hey , I was looking at the credits and noticed that the soundtrack was done by John Mark Painter. He’s from the band Christian band Fleming and John. This made me pay more attention. The Goat is voiced by Benjy Gaither (son of gospel singer Bill Gaither ) and the brothers who wrote and directed this film also hosted and edited (respectively ) CCM-TV, the short lived Christian music video show based on the magazine. It’s always great to see Christians put out something that does not make you want to gag.

I have since bought the Sound Track. It’s a lot of fun.

Fleming and John’s Myspace page says:

You can download a bootleg of their Awesome “Hoodwinked” Soundtrack here

PS

Did you know that Hercules Goes Bananas was the original title for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first film where they dubbed his voice to take care of his accent . I never thought I would see a movie with a HGB joke!

Walt Disney is opening the vault once more to bring children everywhere the marvel and magic of yet

Walt Disney is opening the vault once more to bring children everywhere the marvel and magic of yet another Disney Princess.Tomorrow, December 11th The Princess and The Frog opens in theaters around the United States. The film is similar to most other Disney movies except this one has an unexpected twist. The princess does not sit around and wait for her prince, or her knight in shining armor to come save her; rather she must save him.

In the article by Stephen Schaefer, Anika Noni Rose the leading female voice expresses pride in the latest movie and the message that it is sending to children. She hopes that it will inspire them with hard work and determination to allow them to achieve their dreams.

This has not always been the theme of the Disney movies. In fact The Disney Corporation has presented children worldwide with images of women who depend on their looks and sexuality to achieve a favorable outcome. These images have had a direct effect on children today; changing their behavior patterns and teaching them about sex at too young of an age and encouraging them to act in a sexual nature.

Disney is not the only one to blame. The Media has always represented women and men in unrealistic and almost unhealthy ways. This is especially seen with young girls. Growing up girls are given a Barbie Doll and all of her accessories from the Barbie Dream Home loaded with the Barbie Kitchen Set and Bedroom Set to encourage young girls to become domestic and aspire to be like Barbie.

These aspirations include good housekeeping but also entail Barbie’s signature look. When Barbie was first introduced into mainstream society she was a realistic impossibility. Her head was too big, her breasts too voluptuous, her waist too tiny, her hips too wide and her legs to long to be a functioning human being.

Girls and women have been subject to images such as these for their whole lives and are convinced that it is beautiful. Eating disorders, depression, and self loathing are the results of Barbie, of the Bratz Dolls, of Disney Princesses, and of skeletal models who wish to look just like them.

It is unhealthy to teach a girl such unrealistic models of perfection for they will believe it and attempt to achieve it.

Eating disorders, unhealthy eating are prevalent in today’s society. As obesity is a rising concern amongst Americans teenage girls are turning to drastic measures to avoid becoming a statistic proving the gluttonous existence of fast food chains that is America. Girls have become bulimic and anorexic in an attempt not to gain weight and remain the stick like status quo. Not eating is as dangerous as becoming overweight.

Children look to the media today for images of what they should look like. Many little girls wish to grow up and become beautiful princesses who everyone will love. What is not prevalent in society is an accurate image of what a female should look like at a healthy weight. What children do not realize is that women who do look like that are unhealthy, sickly and in need of help. Children believe that it is capable of growing up and looking like that. They do not realize that reality is they cannot.

Generazioni di bambine hanno avuto un solo modello femminile: Barbie, la bambola bionda da vestire.

Ora non è più così. Bratz e Winx le hanno rubato il mercato per due motivi:

sono meglio vestite;

by sylvia

Ok, so you may have picked up that I LOVE cartoons. I watch them all the time. But the side effect of watching cartoons aimed at children is having to sit through the repeated, painfully annoying commercials. I know, poor me. Boo hoo.

Don’t get me wrong – I love toys and cute and robots and junk, but some of these toys I just don’t get. Sure, I’m not the demographic they’re advertising to, but I could be a consumer one day, if I ever have any kids (we’re working on it!) or any of my nieces and nephews have any children anytime soon (which I hope to God doesn’t happen, as the oldest one is 19).

But, if you can, please explain these to me and whether or not they appeal to you or any kids you know (and just for the record, I’m not shilling for Toys R Us, it was just the most central place to find all these gems):

Baby Alive Real Surprises Doll - WTF? Seriously. I was a little girl once and can’t imagine being interested in a doll in which I have to clean up its ‘real surprises’, aka POOP. The recommended age is 3-6 years, so there goes my theory that it could be used a potty training device (’see how gross it is to clean your diaper, sweetie? now get to using the damn toilet!’). And it’s $39.99, y’all. I’m sure parents can find something that poops for less money.

And since we’re on the topic of baby dolls, this one freaks the fudge outta me: Little Mommy Walk & Giggle Doll - ok, the toy at first glance isn’t horrible, except that it is your standard blonde haired caucasian doll (no other ethnic options), but have you seen the damn thing in action?

Umm….the hair is bad enough, but WTF on every thing else. In the actual commercial, it was just her voice that freaked me out, but now that I’ve seen her in action without all the glamorous lighting of Hollywood, it’s easy to see how scary she is. And sweetie? You’re not sleepy – it’s called a concussion. Oh, and did you catch the price tag? 70 mothafuckin’ dollars

To continue the trend, how about these monsters? If you read my post referencing the Cabbage Patch Kids, then you know I am not a fan, and do have some childhood pain associated with them. But these are especially horrendous. I think what bothers me most is the commercial (sorry, I couldn’t find it anywhere to show you), where they are showing off the product by the girls “popping” (shoving) these “hair extensions” into the Cabbage Patch Kids’ heads. So really, when you think about it, I should actually quite like this toy!

Bendaroos - ok, I just don’t get these. From the commercial, it looks like you would need many many MANY additional Bendaroos to actually do the things with the Bendaroos they show in the commercial. Plus, it does not appear to be that fun. And the commercial where the kid from Iowa gets all excited about all the crazy things he did with his Bendaroos makes me never EVER want to visit Iowa (sorry if I offend thou). I asked Bianca’s Zeta about it once, as she seems to be the age of the kids in the commercial, and she said they looked like fun. Like mother, like daughter, I guess (zing! burn…)

Next up are the potential choking threats that are ChixOs! So basically, if you don’t know what ChixOs! are, I’m not sure how much I can tell you. You have a WIDE VARIETY of tops! bottoms! feet! heads! to choose from, you stick them together, spray them with water and then they take a “glitter shower” (which sounds kinda dirty, but totally what me and Bianca are going to be doing for our Holiday Party, but also sounds really awesome), and then that’s kind of it. You have all of these selections to choose from, but once you spray them with water and glitter, you’re shit out of luck. You can’t change their clothes or shoes, you just have to create MORE CHIXOS! Yes, of course, that’s a great “marketing” move, but the little girl in me would rather get a damn 9″ ‘Fashion Doll’ from the dollar store, because I could at least change her clothes once in a while. But wait! Did you know that you can CREATE things for your ChixOs! by using PixOs!? PixOs are the “safe version” of “Aqua Dots“, for those of you not in the know about children’s toys. Just sayin’

I’m just glad “Bratz” Dolls are not around anymore. I couldn’t be subjected to any more of those big heads, pouty overinflated lips and skank outfits. But now we have all these girls’ dolls with “self-esteem” and junk. Case in point:

Best Friends Club - Will you choose the 11″ doll or the 19″ doll? Either way, her freakishly large head will creep you out and keep you up at night

Liv Fashion Dolls - More big heads! And wigs! It’s Kim Zolciak, y’all, of Housewives of Atlanta Fame! Don’t be tardy for this party! (sorry, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to get that song in somewhere, anywhere)

Moxie Girlz – yet another big headed doll with a wig – let’s paint on our clothes and have a sleepover!

And as I was writing this list, I realized there wasn’t anything on there that was stereotypically ”for boys” – trucks, race car sets, action figures, dinosaurs, etc. Of course, I may be a little biased, as those are things I play with now, but still….why is that?

So I started thinking about the toys I LOVED growing up. I had a lot of hand me down toys, but I think the things I loved were the things that were MINE. For example:

Kenner Tree Tots Tree House - hands down, my absolute favorite toy EVER. One of my fondest memories of my childhood.

I’m actually getting a little emotional thinking about it right now. I can’t even describe to you how much I loved this thing. And not just now, as a bit of nostalgia. I played with this thing for years. I’m not sure why I stopped playing with it, to tell you the truth. Perhaps my mom packed it away when she packed away all my favorite clothes I was hanging on to that were several sizes too small (red velour shirt with strawberries on it, anyone?). But it resurfaced later, and my sister took it for her kids. With my permission, of course (sorta). In retrospect, a bad idea. They lost most of the parts, and then my sister got rid of it. I was able to keep the dad and the daughter, and many many years later, my sister found the dog. Ugh, seriously, I need to stop writing about it. It’s starting to break my heart! Anybody got about $250 I can blow on this on eBay? Thanks. Youns guys is awesome.

Fisher Price Woodsey Log House - in looking for this, I found that there were other “Woodsey” toys I could have been playing with as well (had my parents not loved me enough to buy them for me)?!?!? But it doesn’t matter. I loved me this Woodsey Log House.

Maybe it was the squirrels that squeaked when you squeezed ‘em (you could stick your fingers into their arms, a la puppet-style). Or the rubbery fake-wood furniture. Or the detail on the inside of the house. Or the fact that everything fit inside and you could carry it around. Damn, I loved that thing. But alas, it was yet another toy my sister’s kids “inherited” and then destroyed or got rid of. Oh well.

And it pains me that I cannot come up with another toy from my childhood that I cherished! In restrospect, I guess that could be looked at as a good thing.

So, do tell – are there any toys out now that you HATE or downright creep you out? How about toys from your childhood? Inquiring mind(s) want to know!

I don’t consider myself a Barbie girl. I had them. I played with them. I launched them up onto the roof of our house. But spending hours dressing and undressing this so-called 12″ fashion doll seemed pointless to me because Barbie’s clothes were never quite cool enough.

This holiday season, the fashion doll wars are in full-effect, with Fashionista Barbie trying to regain top-doll status lost to the skanky Bratz line. Like the term Fashionista, Barbie’s clubby looks are two thousand late compared to Bratz’s 2008 — meaning both are unfashionably skeevy.

This season, there are two other contenders for the crown: Moxie Girlz and Liv Dolls. Not only can you dress them up in much more au courant casual clothes, you can also switch up their wigs.

Moxie Girlz are a slightly less slutty version of Bratz (both dolls come from the same company) with clothes and accessories that only an eccentric five-year-old would love.

Liv Dolls (pictured above), from Toronto-based company Spin Master, would appear to be the funnest of the new fashion dolls: The clothes are strictly junior but at least they are on trend. And unlike Bratz and Moxie, the $19 Liv is fully poseable. Which has led to a whole new sub-genre of Liv Doll stop-motion animation. Which makes me want to get one.

Something tells me she would know." width="195" height="500" />

Everything seemed normal there. It has become increasingly popular to dress for Halloween as a sexy version of many characters. So these costumes are quite common nowadays. No big whoop.

Now let’s take a look at the costumes that these models’ daughters and nieces will be wearing:

These costumes are made for girls 8-14 years old.

‘Nuff said.

P.S. Those kid’s totally stole their poses from the grownup ladies in their costumes.

P.P.S. All the kid’s costumes are from that “Bratz” brand. The “watch your little princess turn into a ‘dollar a pop’ young lady” brand of toys and costumes.

Sorry Playboy, there’s a new house in town. Barbie’s real life Malibu Mansion.

The house was designed earlier this year to celebrate 50 years of Barbie … and of course to try and boost sales.

Despite harsh competition with Bratz dolls, Barbie continues to be the best selling toy worldwide. Of course if a material world, having over-all sales isn’t ever good enough.

Set for release later this year is a newly remade Barbie that is sure to delight the souls of young girls nationwide. A flexible Barbie!

Wait … I had a Barbie that did that back when I was like, I don’t know … six? This isn’t new at all.

Then again, if corporations thought of new ideas we wouldn’t have all those lame Disney sequels that go straight to DVD.

So what’s really different about this doll? I have no idea … sure she has 12 joints (Bratz will soon be released with 14 – ouch.) and new clothes … but what will really set this Barbie apart from her competitors?

Probably nothing … but hey, at Barbie will always be skinny, hot and never need a man to feel validated in life. Talk about a role model. Sign me up.

And to all the Barbie haters out there… I’m sorry you’re ugly.

Business is changing. Yes, your business. But look on the bright side so is everybody else’s. Why, b

Business is changing. Yes, your business. But look on the bright side so is everybody else’s. Why, because nation’s change, culture’s change, and people change. And these three elements are what make markets. And they are always, always dynamic. No value proposition remains forever relevant – even yours – and that’s a guarantee!

My goodness, not even a business built on something as simple as a doll stays the same. Not even when you become the most famous and adored doll in the entire world. Not even when you have been around for 50 years. Not even when your annual sales reach almost $2 billion – yes, with a “B.” It appears even the likes and dislikes of little girls’ change, which happens to impact the fortunes of many.

Most scary according to industry insiders is the fact that, “girls seem to be losing their taste for dolls, flocking instead to iPods, videogames and the Internet,” according to an article in the Wall Street Journal by Ann Zimmerman. Right now that downward trend is about 5%, which of course is significant as a percentage of “billions.” But, what about the girls that are still fussing and giggling over dolls – where there is a bit of war – because even if they like dolls, today they apparently like different dolls.

That is what has set off a cat-fight in the doll business juicy enough for the steamiest soap opera. First with Barbie, a Mattel product, showing signs of aging, a new doll strolled on to the scene – Bratz. With their, “spoiled attitude, pouty lips, and revealing clothes,” and not to mention, “oversized features and naughty vibe” sales were huge. The creator who correctly read the change of market failed only because he didn’t tell Mattel – his employer. Instead his vision was produced by MGA. In 2004 they lost a lawsuit with Mattel, which cost them $100 million and rights to produce the doll. No problem. Lightening struck twice as MGA quickly rallied with the Moxie Girlz – complete with accessories that can be colored by hand. Ooh, Ah!

And then there is Spin Master’s, Liv dolls – a wannabe rock star, a budding hairstylist, a klutzy athlete, and a fashion maven. What makes them unique, and desirable? Instead of 12 movable joints like Barbie, they have 14. Now that’s evolution! Creators now believe girls will be better able to help their dolls duplicate the poses of real fashion models. Excuse me that’s not evolutionary, that’s revolutionary!

So, why do I have such an interest in the doll business? One, it is a perfect, recent and relevant way to demonstrate no business is safe from change – no market – no one – not even me. Just today, Federal Express delivered a high chair and baby bed. That would be the second reason for my keen interest in dolls. I have a baby girl on the way – personally I’m still leaning toward the iPod or maybe a football.

The Wall Street Journal reports Barbie’s newest incarnation, the Fashionistas line, a trendier

The Wall Street Journal reports Barbie’s newest incarnation, the Fashionistas line, a trendier, more posable (12 joints) version of the iconic doll. According to the article, two new dolls are ready to challenge the champ–Liv dolls from Spin Master, best known for toys for boys; Moxie Girlz from MGA Entertainment, the company that lost a crushing legal fight with Barbie parent Mattel over the Bratz line.

Barbie is a company unto itself with annual sales topping $1 billion and a globally recognized brand. Its marketing issues resemble those of Tide detergent, another “company-within-a-company.” In an earlier post, I mention the orange monolith that is the Tide display in the supermarket laundry product aisle. That’s only outdone by the pink grotto which is Barbie’s turf in the typical toy store (even a manly guy like me will find himself there if he has daughters).

Like Tide, Barbie has a variant and sub-brand for every perceived customer, from “Peekaboo Petites” ready to throw down on Polly Pocket, to the “I Can Be” line which casts Barbie as a career woman, to “Barbie: Collector,” the $40+ resident of Mom’s knickknack shelf. Of course, there’s plain old Barbie in Fairy-Tastic, Wedding Day, and Fashion Fever formats. Ken better look out. There’s also a Barbie accompanied by Spongebob Squarepants.

Barbie suffers from line extension fatigue, as decried by my favorite branding experts, Al and Laura Ries. In their book, The Origin of Brands, Al and Laura assert that the effort to force existing brands into new positioning would be better spent creating entirely new brands to satisfy changing consumer tastes and needs.

Bratz fulfilled that new doll brand opportunity as it went sassy instead of statuesque, straight-up urban diva versus fantasy princess/Malibu beach girl/modern bride/astronaut/curio. The one problem: designer Carter Bryant was still in Mattel’s employ when he devised the “disruptive technology” doll. Mattel proved it in court and won a $100 million judgment against MGA Entertainment and the right to shut down the Bratz line–a business and legal miracle that allowed the big, slow established company to thwart the upstart that had absconded with its share, something the incumbent brand was unable to accomplish in the marketplace.

The irony: Bratz probably would have never seen the light of day had Carter Bryant submitted the concept to his bosses at Mattel. Just as Xerox squashed the personal computer technology developed at its PARC think tank, just as Kodak forgot the first digital camera came from its labs, Mattel would have seen the pouty, cooler-than-thou Bratz as an affront to its Barbie dynasty and shipped them to the dumpster.

Now everyone is trying to be Bratz, including MGA Entertainment with its comeback Moxie Girlz and Mattel with the Fashionistas. Barbie has morphed more than Madonna. It’s time for the true material girl to concentrate on her strengths and adjust sales and market share expectations accordingly.
