<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Um dos destaques da <a href="http://www.bdw09.com.br/site2009/" target="_blank">Brazil Design Week</a>, que aconteceu no começo de novembro com realização da Aktuell, foi a presença do designer inglês <a href="http://sebastianconran.com/" target="_blank">Sebastian Conran</a>. Durante a sua apresentação, ele lembrou do trabalho de um outro designer, sempre citado como grande fonte de inspiração: <a href="http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieter_Rams" target="_blank">Dieter Rams</a>.</p>
<p>Rams é um designer alemão que fez história com o seu trabalho para a <a href="http://www.braun.com/default.html" target="_blank">Braun</a>, fabricante alemã de eletro-eletrônicos. Todos os produtos desenhados por ele seguiam uma série de princípios formais e funcionais que valorizavam a simplicidade, atingindo uma elegância tão impressionante que a maioria desses produtos criados nos anos 1960 e 70 ainda são absolutamente modernos.</p>
<p>O trabalho de Dieter Rams é tão impressionante que continua a inspirar algumas das empresas de ponta no mundo hoje, vide a sempre comentada inspiração que ele exerce sobre Jonathan Ive &#8211; o designer por trás do iPod, iMac e iPhone:</p>

<h2>What causes Sensitivity and Decay in Teeth?</h2>
<p>Your teeth (and mine!) are covered with a hard protective enamel coating. That makes them impervious to most things that we are likely to come across in nature, for a while at least. The problem is that when we eat, we enjoy a lot of sugar -  so do bacteria. The more frequently we eat or drink sugary substances, the more fun the bacteria have and the more prone we are damaged teeth. The bacteria can be hard to get rid of because they protect themselves under a layer of plaque. This is the yellow or brown hard coating most often seen at the base of and between the teeth. You need to get rid of this. Sometimes a visit to a hygienist is required to get rid of accumulated plaque but good dental hygiene at home will help to prevent it gaining a foothold in the first place.</p>
<p>Those bacteria produce acids which damage the enamel, the body cannot replace the enamel once it has been destroyed. This damage allows entry to the soft tissues beneath (dentine) which is where decay sets in. This eventually causes pain, the only treatment for this sort of decay is removal of the infected material or even the whole tooth if the decay has destroyed a significant part of the structure. This requires the attention of a dentist. Even worse, the decay can spread to the roots of the tooth. This causes a LOT of pain (I know first hand about this one) and can result in the loss of the tooth if not caught in time. Once the roots are damaged, you are facing a long and laborious, not to mention very expensive, stay in the dentists chair while the roots are drilled out, filled and the tooth refilled or capped. You then have a dead tooth, but at least no gap.</p>
<p>As we get older, after eating a lot of acidic food, which we all do in a lifetime, acid erosion of the enamel takes place. This causes damage to little pockets of enamel leaving the dentine below exposed. Sensitivity can also be caused by regression of the gum line if we have been careless with our hygiene! Anything hot or cold making contact with those exposed areas causes instant pain.</p>
<p>Prevention is obviously going to be better than the often painful cure. Use of a toothbrush to clean all exposed surfaces of the teeth is a key part of the hygiene regime. My personal favourite is the <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0011NNP5W?ie=UTF8&#38;tag=felinefantasi-21&#38;linkCode=as2&#38;camp=1634&#38;creative=19450&#38;creativeASIN=B0011NNP5W">Braun Oral-B Professional Care Total Care 8900 Rechargeable Toothbrush</a><img style="border-style:none!important;margin:0;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=felinefantasi-21&#38;l=as2&#38;o=2&#38;a=B0011NNP5W" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />. It has a round head which oscillates at very high speed and does a great job at loosening plaque and sweeping it away. It does a far better job than I have ever managed to achieve with a normal toothbrush. This obviously only cleans the exposed surfaces, another favourite place for bacteria to hide in plaque is between the teeth themselves. You can buy little Interdental brushes to get at those awkward areas or use dental floss. I use <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001AI8AKI?ie=UTF8&#38;tag=felinefantasi-21&#38;linkCode=as2&#38;camp=1634&#38;creative=19450&#38;creativeASIN=B001AI8AKI">TePe Interdental Brush Blue 0.6mm</a><img style="border-style:none!important;margin:0;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=felinefantasi-21&#38;l=as2&#38;o=2&#38;a=B001AI8AKI" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /> brushes. Those little brushes come in different sizes to match the gaps between your teeth. You might want to ask your dentist which ones are best for you if you don’t feel like experimenting.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve been attacked by a dentists drill in the past, you&#8217;ll know how painful and inconvenient that can be, as well as expensive. A few minutes a couple of times a day can really help to prevent all that aggravation. It also gives you a nice clean breath so you don&#8217;t have to worry about meeting the lad or lass of your dreams and scaring them away with bad breath.</p>

<h2>What to do about Sensitivity</h2>
<p>While gum disease is easily preventable with just basic attention to dental hygiene, there&#8217;s little that can be done to prevent acid erosion. A good solution to the problem of this sort of sensitivity is the use of a specially formulated toothpaste. I use <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0017KOMVK?ie=UTF8&#38;tag=felinefantasi-21&#38;linkCode=as2&#38;camp=1634&#38;creative=19450&#38;creativeASIN=B0017KOMVK">Sensodyne Total Care Toothpaste</a><img style="border-style:none!important;margin:0;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=felinefantasi-21&#38;l=as2&#38;o=2&#38;a=B0017KOMVK" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /> all the time to keep that sort of pain at bay.</p>
<p>If you have really serious pain, and by that I mean something that drives you to distraction, then it&#8217;s pretty unlikely that any toothpaste is going to do much for you. That sort of pain indicates a serious underlying condition which needs the attention of an expert, i.e. a dentist, so go see one. You’ll feel much better afterwards and you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve followed a regular regime of hygiene using this sort of toothpaste, you&#8217;ll probably only need to clean your teeth using it normally once or twice a day to stay pain free. If this toothpaste fails to relieve your pain after a couple of weeks, you really should see your dentist anyway.</p>
<p>I wouldn’t recommend brushing your teeth immediately after eating or drinking though. I’ve been advised that the enamel is softened by the acid in some of our foods and drinks and that brushing before it has a chance to naturally harden again causes damage. Safest thing to do is to simply not brush for at least half an hour after eating or drinking. Remember, there’s no way to replace lost enamel so the less you lose the better off you’ll be…</p>

<h2>How I do the job</h2>
<p>I just clean my teeth normally with the Braun in the morning an hour or so after breakfast and have a rinse with Plax, mainly because I like the way it tastes and it helps keep that breath fresh…at least that’s the claim on the bottle. In the evening, I load the toothbrush with toothpaste and spread it around the teeth without switching it on. I sometimes have to load the brush a couple of times, you don&#8217;t need to overdo this &#8211; a smear of paste on and between the teeth is enough. I then use an interdental brush to get the toothpaste working between the teeth. Only when I&#8217;ve done that, do I turn the Braun on and brush the teeth normally.</p>
<p>It may sound like a lot of faffing about but after suffering pain from poor hygiene in the past, I&#8217;m not going there again. A few minutes a day cleaning teeth versus immense pain&#8230;it&#8217;s a no contest.</p>

<p>Sowohl Fran als auch Doro tönen/färben sich die Haare und bei beiden bin ich mir nicht mal sicher, was eigentlich ihr Naturton ist.</p>
<p>Ich jedenfall war immer dunkelblond, bis eine geniale Friseurin es geschafft hat, durch geschickte Strähnchensetzung ein fast hellblondes Ergebnis zu erzielen. Ich war auch Jahre lang damit zufrieden und da ich recht blass bin, habe ich auch nie über etwas anderes nachgedacht.</p>
<p>Und trotzdem bin ich jetzt nicht mehr blond. Jetzt haben meine Haare einen braun-rötlichen Ton und ich bin eigentlich auch ganz zufrieden damit. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass sie meine komische Augenfarbe jetzt etwas mehr unterstreichen.</p>
<p>Vielleicht versuche ich beim nächsten Mal noch eine etwas dunklere Farbe &#8211; das fällt dann auch nicht so stark auf.</p>
<p>Auf die Gesichter von Caro, Sophie und Doro bin ich jedenfalls gespannt.</p>

<p>Ich denke schon länger über braune Haare nach, allerdings haben mir fast alle, die ich kenne, davon abgeraten, weil ich einfach zu blass bin. Jetzt habe ich hier eine Movida Farbtönung Typ Noisette rumstehen und weiß noch nicht so recht, ob ich das wirklich will&#8230;klar, von dem Image des blonden, blauäugigen Dummchens wegzukommen ist ein Vorteil, aber will ich das eigentlich?</p>
<p>Doro hat mir mal den Gefallen getan, und meine Haare per Fotoshop braun gefärbt. Mir hat das Ergebnis eigentlich ganz gut gefallen &#8211; aber es ist wieder so eine Sache. Sich von einer Haarfarbe zu trennen, die man schon seit Jahren hat, ist nicht leicht &#8211; und ja, obwohl mich meine Haare zu 99% der Zeit nerven, will ich sie eigentlich behalten.</p>
<p>Auf der anderen Seite wäscht sich eine Tönung auch wieder raus&#8230;irgendwann.</p>
<p>Wie man sieht, hat sich nichts verändert. Ich habe eine Entscheidung getroffen, aber in jeder anderen Hinsicht bin ich noch Ahnungslos und untentschlossen. Wie soll ich mein Leben jemals auf die Reihe kriegen, wenn ich mich nicht mal für eine Haarfarbe entscheiden kann?!</p>

<p>I must say this pulsonic shaver got converted me to foil once again.. awesome performance.. Far exceeded my expectations..<br />I thought that auto-cleaning stuff was unnecessary as i was used to tap cleaing. But now i am addicted to it..If i want to nitpick on one, that would be the travel case.. looks cheap. But that is not the important point here. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>In 1921 un inginer german, Max Braun punea bazele unui mic atelier de produse electronice in Frankfurt pe Main. Cum perioada respectiva a cunoscut o explozie a radioului, specializarea atelierului era in componente pentru aparate radio. Aproape 30 de ani mai tarziu, in 1950, un medic stomatolog din cealalta parte a lumii crea prima periuta de dinti sub marca Oral-B. Modelul creat se numea Oral-B 60 dupa numarul firelor de nylon incluse.</p>
<p>Afacerea medicului Robert Hutson din California s-a extins rapid, de la afacere de familie, derulata in casa si portbagajul masinii cu care ducea periutele la posta pentru a le expedia clientilor, la un business solid care pana la sfarsitul anilor 70 exporta produsele in Europa, America Latina si Asia. Mai mult, periutele Oral-B au fost primele care au ajuns pe luna odata cu misiunea Apollo 11.</p>
<p>Intre timp, Braun crease un prototip de periuta de dinti electrica, numita &#8220;Mayadent&#8221; (1963), care simula miscarile unei periute normale. Produsul a fost initial unul de nisa, avand o raspandire redusa in primii ani. Orizontul s-a schimbat in 1967 cand Gillette a cumparat Braun care ajunsese deja unul dintre producatorii de top de aparatura electrocasnica mica. Din acest moment Braun a beneficiat de motorul de marketing al Gillette care a promovat si acest tip de produs. Insa abia in 1978 nisa a fost dezvoltata suficient incat produsul sa ajunga la productie de masa. </p>
<p>In 1984 Gillette a cumparat si Oral-B punandu-si serios amprenta pe acest segment de produse prin investitii masive in tehnologie si marketing. Acesta din urma a propulsat Oral-B in topul vanzarilor din Statele Unite si nu numai lansand prima periuta pentru copii sub licenta Star Wars in 1984. In acelasi an Braun, divizie separata a Gillette creeaza prima periuta electrica cu miscari pe 3 axe.</p>
<p>Ceea ce era de asteptat s-a intamplat in 1987 cand a fost lansata prima periuta in colaborare Braun si Oral-B, marcand un nou inceput de business. De aici marketingul si-a spus cuvantul ducand plasand Oral-B ca sub-brand al Braun si cucerind efectiv lumea cu produsele lor. Din 2001, capetele periutelor de dinti ii au pe Mickey Mouse, Winnie-the-Pooh si pe Buzz Lightyear prin semnarea unui nou acord cu Disney. Restul e business modern.</p>

I thought that we had Jonathan Ive (head of design at Apple) to thank for this sleek, simple but utterly brilliant modern wonder, but a visit to London’s Design Museum, where <a href="http://designmuseum.org/exhibitions/current-exhibitions">Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams</a> has just opened, soon proved me wrong. Turns out that Dieter Rams is the ‘designer’s designer’: a man that the likes of Jonathan Ive take ideas from, and the creator, if you like, of the first ‘iPod’.</p>

<p>Oh yes. Back in 1959, Rams designed the first portable record player with a detachable radio – you could plug in some earphones and walk with it. He was also the man that made German electronics manufacturer, Braun, a household name in the 50s, designing audio equipment, calculators and shavers &#8211; as well as furniture designs for Vitsœ &#8211; that are as modern and relevant today as they were 50 years ago. His design ethos was based around a refusal to pander to the whims of fashion (&#8220;I hate everything that is driven by fashion,&#8221; he said), and the timeless notion that less is always better. His designs for Braun reflected this, and were marked by simplicity, a paucity of colour and materials, and a loyalty to function and durability of product.</p>

<p>Rivals in the 50s might have sneered at these principles &#8211; his clean, white, minimalist Braun SK4 of 1956 (the world’s first proper hi-fi) was dubbed ‘Snow White’s Coffin’ &#8211; but it is those same principles, set out as a list of ten ‘design commandments’ by Rams himself in the 80s, that are so prized and closely adhered to by Jonathan Ive for Apple and countless other modern designers today.</p>

<title><![CDATA[On Co-Branding]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Co-Branding, as defined by Philip Kotler, is “Two or more well-known brands combined in an offer”. Co-Branding refers to a situation where a product or service offering holds the brand names of both the participants to influence brand preference and incentivise purchase of the product or service in concern by delivering a perception of the existence of the brand values of both the brands involved to the consumer of the product or service. This essentially tries to incorporate the advantages or brand associations of both the brands involved into one product or service offering.</p>
<p>Co-Branding carries a strong list of advantages, partly relating to brand associations and values, and partly with the product or service offering itself. The former is done to enhance customer experience and influence behaviour, the latter is done to incorporate usage of technology or brand attributes like design, aesthetics <em>et al</em> in the product or service in order to offer an enhanced or augmented product or service. New product launches often depend on Co-Branding for establishing market position by having customer identify new brands and their offerings through an already existing brand. This can often be combined with Synergies offered by particular brands. An example of this would be, although in its nascent stage, the Mahindra-Renault partnership where Mahindra’s expertise in the Indian market was used to develop distribution and service channels, and Renault’s product portfolio is used to produce and design cars. Mahindra benefits through Renault’s expertise in producing sedans and hatchbacks for their future portfolios, and Renault benefits in saving huge dealer development costs and having its current mid-size offering, the Logan, being identified as a cheap to run, frugal and reliable automobile, all values housed by Mahindra brands such as the Scorpio and the Bolero. Image re-enforcement has become another common trend in the marketplace where two complementary brands come together and market their offerings together. A very apt example of this would be Jack Daniel’s and Coca-Cola, or as they call it, ‘Jack &#38; Coke’. When this campaign was carried out in pubs and bars across the United States, Jack Daniel’s was perceived more as a rugged brand or rednecks, and coke has a wider appeal to the youth. The middle ground was the newly legal adults who had experienced Coke for decades, but hadn’t experienced Jack Daniel’s whiskey. This Co-Branding exercise was carried out to appeal to the market in between the typical Coke and Jack Daniel’s markets, i.e., 21 to 35 year olds. It became such a success that Jack &#38; Coke has become a favourite amongst not only the targeted segments of the market, but also with older, more mature audiences. In a nutshell, Co-Branding essentially has to take into consideration the brand partnership that the customer perceives (purpose, advantages), the common values the brands and its customers share and what the co-branding offering means to the target audiences.</p>
<p>Brand Loyalty, when it comes to Co-Branding, is a tricky business. When a service or product offering is similar to the brand value or image offered by the Co-Branded offering, success is often witnessed. An example of this would be the limited edition Tonino Lamborghini Espresso Machine. Only 1000 units were produced, priced at about $1750. Since the offering appealed directly to the Lamborghini target market, it was sold-out within a matter of days. The buyers were not just Lamborghini car owners, they were also people who admired the Lamborghini brand and couldn’t own the car, so the association created with the espresso machine goes a long way in delivering customer delight, even without owning a Lamborghini is truly astounding. However, this can be often fatal to the image of brands as well. The formerly GM owned SUV cult brand Hummer had launched a mobile phone with a company named ‘Fly’. The product was, for lack of a better phrase, inadequate. Where the Hummer brand stood for rugged looks and go-anywhere attitude, the Fly Hummer phone stood for neither. The phone was perceived by the market as flimsy and basic, whereas the Hummer brand stood for all else. The Co-Branding was a failure where even Hummer car owners were also turned off by the entire exercise.</p>
<p>Famous examples of fairly successful Co-Branding include ICICI and Hindustan Petroleum Credit Cards, Lease-Plan and Mondial assistance, Intel with major computer manufacturers like Hewellet-Packard, Dell etc., Acer-Ferrari Laptops, Asus-Lamborghini Laptops, Puma-Ferrari merchandise, Fiat-Mattel Barbie Fiat 500, TataSky digital Dish TV, The Global Fund (Red) with various brands like Apple, American Express, Dell, Starbucks, Hallmark, Converse etc., Jack Daniel’s and TGI Friday’s with multiple Jack Daniel dishes, and the list goes on and on. However, failures have included British Telecom and AT&#38;T, Mahindra-Renault, Braun-Gillette Body Shavers, Fly Hummer Mobile Phones, and many more.</p>
<p>Co-Branding, hence, is a double edged sword, with each side being sharp enough to cut through titanium. Organisations have to be very careful while co-branding and aiming for success simply because of the fact that a wrong move can result in stupendous disasters that may plague the brands involved for a long period of time where the organisation may end up spending millions to revive the brand.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s something that might help avenge <a href="http://thatswhatimsayingguy.wordpress.com/2009/11/11/jeter-gets-another-undeserved-gold-glove/#comments">the travesty of Derek Jeter winning a Gold Glove</a>: Aaron Hill and Adam Lind were named Silver Slugger Award winners yesterday. The awards, voted on by coaches around the league, are handed out to the players with the best &#8220;overall offensive value&#8221; at each position.</p>
<p>Of course, this also leaves me feeling slightly better about an otherwise horrible Jays season, though still not too optimistic about the one we&#8217;re about to embark on next April. At least we have our two mashers, though &#8212; Lind, who hit .305/.370/.562 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with 35 homers and 114 RBIs in 2009, may be in for a move to first base <a href="http://thatswhatimsayingguy.wordpress.com/2009/11/08/overbay-may-be-on-the-move/">if Alex Anthopolous is able to move Lyle Overbay</a>, while Hill (.286/.330/.499, 36 and 108) will keep doing his thing at second base.</p>
<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s the full list of Silver Sluggers:</p>
