This was sent to me in an email today…

My opinion based upon close observation of sick dogs and cats is that they seldom exhibit pain even though they may be terribly uncomfortable and unhappy. What you are describing to me is a dog that seems to have lost a certain quality of life. Should you keep any pet alive just because there is no pain even though that pet is unable to do the things a dog would naturally do?
The disease your dog has is probably incurable and will gradually get worse. That may mean today your dog feels as good as it ever will; each day will hold less comfort, less playfulness, less ability to function like a dog should. If the dog is having more “bad” days than “good” days, and you are able to stop the poor dog’s discomfort in a painless and respectful manner, why not allow the dog to pass away peacefully?
It is a tough call and everyone has an individual way of handling this crisis. Try to be certain today that no one in the future is sorry for NOT doing something they should have. Likewise, regretting having put a dog to sleep when there may have been “some life” left can weigh very heavy on one’s mind many years later. The thought that “I gave up on him” can be haunting. Talk it out with everyone concerned.
Ask the dog, too. This may sound silly but each individual should spend time alone with the dog in a quiet and private location. Hold and comfort the dog in your arms and talk it over… just the two of you. Then, if you listen to your heart, the answers can become very clear.

As we prepare for the loss of little Doc Holiday Dawson, we all share in his life and love for his family. It is important to realize that when the humans (adults and children) are upset, the pet is, too. While difficult, it is important that the family try to lend support and comfort to their animal friend in this last time of need. Seeing their humans upset may upset the pet, too.

Our pets are as much a part of our daily lives as our family and friends, we need to show them, all the love and compassion they have afforded us.

Doc Holiday, go in peace.

“Non ci sono negri italiani”. Il coro si sentiva, forte e chiaro. Anche davanti alla tv, figuriamoci allo stadio. Eppure Farina, l’arbitro di Juve-Inter, non ha sospeso la partita. Non poteva farlo, ho letto ieri sui giornali, perché la partita si può sospendere solo per uno striscione razzista, non per un coro. Vabbè.  Di certo se l’avesse fatto nessuno gli avrebbe rimproverato nulla. Anzi, un gesto del genere sarebbe servito a riportare l’attenzione sul problema. Le città italiane sono piene di razzisti, gli stadi, di conseguenza, pure. Balotelli però non è l’unico giocatore dell’Inter con la pelle scura. Come mai i tifosi se la sono presa con lui e non, per dire, con Muntari? Semplice. Fermo restando che i cori razzisti sono una cosa orribile sempre, finché non cambierà atteggiamento Balotelli continuerà a sentirsene dire di tutti i colori. E’ giovane, è bravo, è ricco, è famoso. Tutte cose che a un razzista non vanno giù. Ma non è solo questo. Lui in campo sembra fare di tutto per rendersi antipatico. Sembra pensare: “sono giovane, sono bravo, sono ricco e sono famoso. Chi se ne frega degli altri”. Ognuno in campo fa quello che vuole e poi, se mai, ne paga le conseguenze. Nessuno si merita i cori razzisti, nemmeno il peggiore degli stronzi. Il problema è che Balotelli darebbe sui nervi ai tifosi avversari anche se fosse bianco. Il fatto che sia nero rende ancora più cattivi gli istinti di chi non tollera l’idea di un italiano nato in Africa. E allora via con i cori e con tutto il resto. E’ evidente che ha carattere, e questo gli servirà, nel calcio e fuori. Però, se mi chiedesse un consiglio, gli direi di darsi una calmata. Non perché abbiano ragione i tifosi razzisti, ma perché nel calcio italiano non c’è ancora posto per uno come lui: forte, giovane, talentuoso, ricco, strafottente. E nero.

La scrittura di Agota Kristof è essenziale e penetrante nel raccontare, in prima persona, le angosce di Tobias.

Tobias Horvath è un emigrato che vive in una cittadina dell’Europa centrale. Solitario e silenzioso, fa l’operaio in una fabbrica di orologi. La sua vita è profondamente segnata da un triste passato: un’infanzia tormentata e l’ombra di un delitto che lo costringono a rifugiarsi in un paese straniero dove conduce una vita vuota, addolcita solo dalla scrittura e dall’attesa del grande amore: Line, la donna dei suoi sogni.

Il breve romanzo “Ieri” ha ispirato il film di Silvio Soldini, “Brucio nel vento”.

Silvio Soldini assieme a Doriana Leondeff adatta per lo schermo il romanzo di Agota Kristof  “Hier”, Ieri, restando sostanzialmente fedele nella struttura della storia cambiando però il finale.

Straordinaria, in particolare, è la sua bravura nella descrizione dei tempi quotidiani del lavoro, con la sveglia alle cinque, l’autobus e  i ritmi della fabbrica.
La storia d’amore scompagina un po’ la precisione del racconto, anche se non mancano sequenze belle;

With Coach Zorn and Clinton Portis publicly bickering, and the Hoyas raining merciless destruction on their feckless opponents, it is time to turn our attention to food.

For some men, eating spicy food is a matter of machismo. For others, it is simply for excitement. For others it is in the blood.

Sometimes we eat spicy food by accident, or as the result of a practical joke. Sometimes it is part of a larger “gourmet experience.”

For me, eating spicy foods of various kinds is a good excuse to visit different restaurants I like. Eating certain things takes me down memory lane. And you get to commune with the fascinating cultures of the globe.

It all began for me with horseradish in high-school. From earliest youth, I always liked roast beef. Then, to my astonishment, I discovered that roast beef covered with horseradish was another thing altogether. It wasn’t just good; it was fun and good.

First, though, let’s put things in perspective: We gringos know NOTHING about consuming serious heat.

Our children like to eat peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches. In Mexico, the children eat ham and chili pepper sandwiches. Mexican children consume foods every day that would send our poor children to the hospital.

On the street in Mexico City, they do not sell hotdogs and Snickers bars. They sell mango slices in a plastic sleeve, covered with red pepper flakes. They sell tamales with a negative pH.

Because brevity is the sole of wit, I will just touch on a few items for your consideration.

The first is of course buffalo wings. I know some people do not approve of my favorite wing joint. You may not know that the sauces offered on the wings are: Mild, Medium, Hot, Spicy Garlic, Cajun, Samurai, ‘Three Mile Island,’ and ‘911.’

I am a Three-Mile man. I have not had the courage to order 911 wings. Three Mile is pretty frickin’ hot.

To tell you truth, I do not think that buffalo wings are where it’s at when it comes to spice. They are good; they warm the tummy. But the world offers more.

Here’s one: Penne all’arrabiata. (According to Italian cooks, Arabs are apparently very angry.) Or special tibs (at an Ethiopian restaurant). Or larb (Thai). Or even a bowl of pho with half a bottle of Vietnamese hot sauce squeezed into it.

This is going to sound lame, because it was trendy about 25 years ago. But my number one prize for favorite spicy food is: Sushi with plenty of wasabi.

Give me a tuna roll with a thumb-size dollop of wasabi, and I will be happy for hours. It excites going down. Then it keeps you company for a while–warm, energizing, thoroughly fun.

Ieri sera sono stato infatti ad un evento che ho apprezzato molto. Per sensibilizzare a proposito della “Dichiarazione Universale dei Diritti Umani” l’associazione culturale evangelica Controcorrente ha invitato Carlos Martìnez, attore spagnolo di pantomima  (mimo) in un piccolo tour italiano chi si è concluso per l’appunto ieri a Roma. L’attore internazionale ha così potuto mimare alcuni degli articoli principali della dichiarazione, ed eccezionalmente, ha recitato senza trucco e ha anche scambiato qualche parola col pubblico tra un mimo e l’altro parlando proprio dell’importanza dei diritti umani, soffermandosi proprio sull’umanità e sull’importanza di vivere al meglio visto che la vita è brevissima. Mi è sopratutto piaciuta l’abilità nell’alternare momenti veramente comici e leggeri con scene durissime e di forte impatto emotivo. Sono sincero, prima di vedere ieri Carlos Martinez, ho sempre avuto una sorta di pregiudizio nei confronti dei mimi, nel senso che proprio non capivo il senso artistico della cosa se non proprio alla larga e con molta diplomazia… ma ieri ho veramente capito l’arte del mimo e la grande potenzialità che la gestualità riesce ad avere, un linguaggio universale, che tutti noi possiamo capire ed apprezzare. Pensavo durante lo spettacolo a quanto certe volte il silenzio sia molto più eloquente di mille parole e in una società come la nostra che cerca di distruggere il silenzio fermarsi a guardare un uomo adulto che crea opere d’arte con il nulla è veramente spettacolare.

Bravo, bravissimo Martinez, il cui spettacolo è patrocinato da amnesty, a trasmettere l’importanza della libertà, dell’uguaglianza, del poter vivere la nostra vita al meglio, TUTTI e non solo noi, pochi fortunati del nord del mondo.

Il video che posto l’ho dovuto… “rubare” visto che era richiesto di non filmare, ma credo che una sola scenetta per lo più utilizzata come spunto per parlare di diritti umani non dia fastidio a nessuno, tra l’altro Martìnez è veramente alla mano! Un simpaticone che ha scherzato con tutti i ragazzi a fine spettacolo, quindi vi consiglio di comprare anche il DVD :p (anche perchè questo è stato l’unico che ho filmato e non è stato neanche il più bello!)

Em muitos sítios da internet, onde alguns brasileiros demonstram o seu desprezo ou mesmo ódio pelos portugueses, vejo várias vezes escrito algo do género “felizmente eu não tenho sangue português, minha ascendência é holandesa”…..bom, passados 200 anos de independência e sem serem filhos ou netos de emigrantes recentes, fico curioso como sabem tão bem qual é a ascendência que têm, mas muito para além disso, costumo responder com uma provocação, que, sendo verdadeira, não é mais que uma provocação. É ela a seguinte:”Realmente deve ser um orgulho ser descendente de um povo cujo comportamento sempre foi guiado pela rapina e pela pilhagem. Os holandeses serviram-se da rapina para tomar locais que Portugal já não conseguia manter no extremo oriente, depois da morte do Rei D.Sebastião e consequentemente do início da queda do Império no final do Século XVI, e continuaram um pouco mais tarde com a tentativa da tomada do Brasil e de Angola a partir de São Salvador da Bahia e Luanda respectivamente….e mostraram toda a sua bravura, quando confrontados com pequenas forças de combate portuguesas foram facilmente derrotados ou…fugiram (no caso de Luanda); Mais recentemente, já nos finais do século XX, também demonstraram toda a sua bravura e esperteza ao terem recebido da ONU o encargo de defender Srebrenica (Bósnia Herzegovina) e os muçulmanos que aí estavam refugiados, dos sérvios bósnios e do general Ratko Mladic e ao invés de o fazerem, entregaram-lhe os homens e rapazes para que fossem mortos sendo os responsáveis pelo maior genocídio na Europa do século XX, depois da segunda guerra mundial. Demonstraram toda a sua esperteza, porque se fossem portugueses a receber esse encargo, duas coisas podiam ter acontecido…ou os defendiam até ao último combatente, ou conseguiam retirar de lá o muçulmanos…os holandeses fizeram melhor, do tipo….”Bom, isto não é assunto nosso, resolvam lá isso entre vocês, que nós vamos embora”.Claro que só escrevo isso numa de provocação, pois todos os povos têm razões para se orgulharem mais e menos de coisas do seu passado. Português não é excepção, mas apesar de todo esse passado colonial, eu, de alguma forma, sinto algum orgulho nele, pois enquanto todos os outros países com passado colonial, sempre trataram esses países como colónias, a nós portugueses (eu ainda apanhei esse tempo) era-nos ensinado desde a escola primária que Portugal começava no Minho e acabava em Timor, querendo isso dizer (mal ou bem), que todos esses territórios e povos eram portugueses e Portugal….não nos era ensinado que Angola (por exemplo) pertencia a Portugal, era-nos sim ensinado que Angola era Portugal. Tudo isso passou, do Brasil também vieram muitas riquezas para Portugal, riquezas essas normalmente mal esbanjadas com a construção de palácios e afins….mas por outro lado, pode-se dizer hoje em dia que este ou aquele monumento (hoje, todos monumentos nacionais) foram construídos com o ouro do Brasil.Por isso eu não gosto de quem se mostra superior; por isso desconfio de quem se mostra subserviente….é necessário o respeito pelo o outro e por si próprio, seja ele brasileiro, português, migrante ou emigrante, descendente ou não de holandeses

Mi ci sono imbattuto svariate volte, in rete, ma senza mai soffermarmici come meritava… Un’esplosione di creatività posta in essere con indiscutibile bravura, ma all’aperto… Ore di lavoro che possono venir vanificate con un minuto di pioggia! Azz… mi verrebbe il groppo alla gola, mi capitasse di trovarmici!
