In accompaniment to this post, I hereby bring you my top 5 favourite hip-hop re-issues from over the years:

5) De La Soul – 3 Feet High & Rising (original: 1989, re-issue: 2001)

I must here admit that De La Soul aren’t a group I’ve paid too much attention over the years, as despite the enormous respect I hold for them and their steez, their style just ain’t for me. However, when Tommy Boy dropped a 2-disc edition of the heradled 3 Feet High & Rising in 2001, I sat up and paid attention, for it featured not only the original album, but no less than 14 exclusive B-sides, alternative mixes, and other tracks that had been previously available on CD.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD DE LA SOUL – 3 FEET HIGH & RISING (BONUS DISC ONLY)

4) Cormega – Special Edition (The Realness & The True Meaning) (originals: 2001 & 2002, re-issue: 2005)

‘Mega scores mad points on three counts – 1) both of these albums were always pretty solid, 2) two albums were re-issued at once, at a good price, and 3) the bonus goodies were stupendous. Featuring around a dozen bonus cuts and a whole load of multimedia video content, Special Edition was the buy of 2005, imo.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD CORMEGA – SPECIAL EDITION (BONUS CONTENT ONLY)

3) Masta Ace – Take a Look Around (original: 1990, re-issue: 2007)

The debut classic album from Ace was notoriously hard to find at a decent price for far too long, yet in 2007 it was re-issued with a bonus disc containing a dozen remixes, instrumentals, and other bonuses, some of which had become available on CD for the first time. Unfortunately, it has fell back out of print, so get it while you can

2) Main Source – Breaking Atoms (original: 1991, re-issue: 2004)

Rightly considered one of the best hip-hop albums ever, Breaking Atoms also managed to be one of the most scarely available, it being almost impossible to find cheaply in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Finally, in 2004, it was re-issued by Wild Pitch themselves, along with 7 bonus tracks, mostly consisting of alternative mixes. These bonuses were in fact pretty throwaway, the main attraction to the re-issue being that the album was available again, period. In 2008, Breaking Atoms was re-issued yet again, this time (and inexplicably) sans the bonus tracks of the 2004 outing, but still well received by hungry fans.

1) O.C. – Word..Life/Jewelz (originals: 1994 & 1997, re-issue: 2008)

Both of these acclaimed albums by O.C. fell out of print some years ago, with Word..Life having become particularly sought-after. O.C. trumps other releases on this list for providing overall the best package – two classic albums in one set, aesthetically pleasing presentation, and tons of bonus cuts ranging from pre-Word..Life demo tracks, to relative obscurities, to later alternative mixes of miscelaneous tracks released – or not – over the years.

So it seems that if I take a week off from doing Throwback Sundays then a few people take notice. My apologies to everyone that logged on last weekend looking to find their weekend dose of throwback videos when there were none to be found. We’re back this weekend and doing it up. Make sure you keep hitting us up with your theme suggestions as we’ll start theming videos and mixes around them very soon.

And you know the drill…videos after the jump.

OG member of the Diggin’ In The Crates crew with the lead single from his debut LP Stunts, Blunts, and Hip Hop. What a banger of as 12″ this was!

The Breaking Atoms album was the only LP where Main Source retained all of their orginal members but what a classic they produced with this. Large Professor broke away and had great success as a solo artist but Mikey D, K-Cut, and Sir Scratch never achieved much fame beyond the group.

Hiero really set a standard for Bay area Hip Hop in the early 90’s and while everyone was jocking the title track they released this 12″ to the acclaim of those that chose to really pay attention.

Even those of us with a heavy NY bias couldn’t deny the heat that the Westside Connection held with their first album. It was so hard, so mean, and had the swagger and funk that any Hip Hop head couldn’t help but get down with. Even if you were riding with the other side the Bow Down joint rocked from coast to coast (minus the NY boycott that is).

Till the next episode…

Classic cut off of an overlooked album. Breaking Atoms should always be mentioned when best hip hop albums come up, but it seems only true heads will bring up this album in discussions. Anyway, Large Professor’s production is top notch on this album and he is easily a top 10 and most likely top 5 for me. The album was recorded in 1991 and Nas makes his first appearance on the track “Live At the Barbecue”. I will post a link to the song, but I will also up the album for anyone who wants to d/l it (recommended if you have never listened).
