MTV is reporting that women beater Chris Brown has released a statement about how he feels about Rhianna’s revelations about the specifics of her beating she received from him, and in a nutshell he expresses that he wishes that they remain private.

I bet he does, because they are reprehensible….

…”While I respect Rihanna’s right to discuss the specific events of February 8, I maintain my position that all of the details should remain a private matter between us,” he said in the statement. “I do appreciate her support and wish her the best. I am extremely sorry for what I did, and I accept accountability for my actions. At this point, I am taking the proper steps to learn about me and grow from my mistakes. I only hope that others in similar situations can learn from our experience as well. Abuse of any kind is always wrong. The rest I leave it to God.”

Chris Brown contacted MTV on Friday morning to issue this statement in the wake of the huge amount of publicity that Rhianna’s  ”Good Morning America” interview with Diane Sawyer, as well as the 20/20 interview tonight,he had better make a pre-emptive proactive gesture.

I  just suggest that he never claims to be confused about what he did to her that night, or that he blacked out from shock, and thus does not remember beating her.That’s not a good look, man.

Just be embarrassed, apologize, seek some help, and do not ever do it to another woman again.

The excuses are hurting you, but this statement is a step in the right direction.

More on Sacramento Bike laws- since a week of law abiding gets you interested in this stuff.

Here’s a little piece…

John Cardiel dashed down Ninth Street on his fixed-gear bike, tearing southward in the right-hand lane, when he heard yelling, which grew louder and closer. He looked over his shoulder and saw two Sacramento police officers on bikes trailing him, hollering, “Stop!”

Cardiel explains that he “skidded to an immediate stop.” Then, he describes that the cops applied their hand brakes and slid past him. “One guy almost fell over. I had more control than they did,” Cardiel remembers.

Well, I ride a fixed gear and was unaware it’s illegal to ride without hand brakes… so I guess once again, it’s impossible to be a good law abiding citizen. No matter how hard to you try!

While I am obviously not a criminal defense attorney, I do know that criminal laws are very serious and can potential effect anyone. My overall goal for this blog site is help explain what these laws are, giving my own in put and reporting on media mistake examples.

Criminal Laws are considered white collar crimes, violent crimes, grim felonies, internet crimes, drug cases, driving while intoxicated (or DUI) and misdemeanors.

White collar crimes are things such as fraud, embezzlement, extortion, forgery and identity theft. A great sociologist by the name of Edwin Sutherland explained it my calling this “a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation” (1949).  Additionally after September 11, 2001 issues surrounding identity theft has become a major issue. For youngsters trying to use a fake id may seem harmless, but in reality it is a major criminal offense.

A violent crime, grim felony and internet crime seems to a bit more obvious that an individual is breaking the law.  Violent crimes include murder, robbery, rape, sexual assault, abuse and assault.  Grim felonies are crimes like burglary, grand larceny, gambling offenses, firearms offenses, and hate crimes. Then furthermore Internet crimes are things such as Internet pornography, Internet predator crimes, and computer sex crimes. Each of these situations is seen on different levels and the severity can vary greatly between court cases.

Finally to drug cases, driving while intoxicated, and misdemeanors are some of the most common criminal defense laws, especially in a younger age frame. Drug crimes involve cultivation, distribution, possession, selling of, and trafficking of any type of illegal drug. There are numerous different types of drugs but an individual can be prosecuted for, basically anything without a prescription.  Driving while intoxicated, which is also known as a DUI is a nationwide criminal law that can be enforced even after have one drink.  This is a serious offense and depending on the court case even for minor accounts individual can loss their driving license. Lastly, a misdemeanor is a criminal offense such as shoplifting, criminal mischief, prostitution, trespassing, and vandalism.

Many of you can probably think back to a time when you were faced with situations like these or came close to being in one.  None the less having any of these criminal defense crimes on your record can be cause major issues later in life, so it is important to understand criminal justice.

After a week of strictly following all the laws of land – jay walking and speeding have never felt so good!

I never thought “nanny laws” hurt much of anyone, but after having to obey them all the time… I feel my basic freedoms constrained.

In hindsight, I’m happy to be able to go 70 mph on the freeway, run stop signs on my bike, and generally go back to living just like I did before the fast – except with a little more appreciation for the breaking the law.

If anything fasting from breaking the law has made me a little more rebellious, in fact – I think I’ll go spit on the sidewalk!

Riding a bike without a kickstand seems harmless enough, right? Well in Woodland, Ca. it’s illegal.

Sgt. Guthrie of the Woodland Police Department actually stopped a cyclist for this offense, he found the party to be on parole and possessing stolen property.

One of the stolen items was an engraved knife, given to a gentlemen by his recently deceased father, which was burgled nights prior. The knife was returned to the rightful owner and the burglar/cyclist was broke to justice.

All because the cyclist doesn’t have a kick stand.

Now, I’m sure the police in Woodland don’t just pull over any and all cyclists lacking the proper bike propping apparatus, so what does this law do? Allow cops to target suspicious people? Obviously in this situation some good was done.

Discuss.

Did you know it’s illegal to ride your bike on K Street in downtown Sacramento?

Well, in researching this current fast I discovered this little legal tidbit. Yes, it’s suppose to be a pedestrian street, and yes, the light rail also is allowed on the street. However, would it be so hard to have a nice wide bike lane down K street?

All that said, I wrote a quick letter to my city councilman, Steve Cohn. He wrote…

“Dear Melody:

Thanks for your email. Re: bikes on K Street, I agree with you 100 percent, and I made a successful motion at the Council’s Law & Legislation Committee to revise the city ordinance to allow bikes ASAP. I think it’s scheduled for Council approval in the next few weeks.”

This is exciting. He’s representing me. The democratic process still works. Although, It probably won’t happen during this fast, and when I’m not fasting breaking laws – I ride my bike anywhere.

But it’s the principle of the thing!

On a side note – I did ride my bike on the sidewalk of J street yesterday while trying to get home.

In the city of Woodland it’s illegal to ride a bike without a kickstand.
In the city of Sacramento it’s illegal to chase squirrels or birds in the park. Also in Sacramento amplified music from a vehicle may not be audible farther than 25 feet away.

So, little did I know, despite 2 long conversation with law enforcement officers, spitting on the sidewalk or street is illegal.

Yesterday while waiting for a table at The Olive Garden, my husband and I found a spot 20 feet away from the entrance of the building and smoked a couple clove cigarettes.

We aren’t normally smokers, but I like a clove every now and again and I bought a pack before the ban on flavored cigarettes took effect.

When smoking saliva tends to collect in my mouth. My dentist said I produce an abnormally great amount saliva anyway and smoking makes it worst. I guess it’s a dirty habit and I should just quit, especially since in spitting on the sidewalk outside the Olive Garden – I broke a law and inadvertently broke my fast.

In addition – on my way to work this morning, while deep in thought about foreign occupation in Afghanistan, I sped up to pass a Fed Ex truck and exceeded 70 miles per hour, breaking the speed limit law.

I cannot decide what to do, and I need some help.

Two weeks ago I was involved in a minor accident on campus. I did everything right, but I was still cited with a ticket and “at fault” because of the circumstances. The cop that reported to the scene was kind but said he was required to write a ticket when there was an accident. I understood why it had to go to me and not the other lady, but it was still upsetting. He nudged me in the direction of fighting the citation and going to court.

I talked to another one of the campus police today that I know pretty well from being at events together. He said that cop was a rookie and that no, he didn’t have to write me a ticket and that her personally never writes tickets if he didn’t witness the accident. And also that there was no one else that witnessed it, so the ticket really wasn’t warranted. And that I should go to court.

It’s just frustrating, because it’s a no-win situation. The ticket is $146. The class to get the points off my license is another $25. If I go to court I can avoid both of those charges. BUT, I also have to use an entire day of vacation, which I just don’t think is fair. For jury duty, you get to use administrative leave. But, to go to court to contest a ticket you shouldn’t receive you have to use vacation.

While we’re on that subject, can I just tell you how sick I am of using vacation for things like doctors appointments, and hospital stays and going to freaking traffic court?! I’d like to go on an ACTUAL vacation, thank you.

And I am. In December. But this is eating into that time and I feel like I always have to have some crazy bank of time in case D needs surgery and so on and so on.

Anyway, what should I do?

Concerning Referendum 71 in Washington State, it seems that both justice and law have been jettisoned, and the LGBTQ community is left with fewer and fewer choices when it comes to standing up for ourselves. More and more transgender persons, lesbians, bisexuals, intersex persons, and yes, gays have reached the breaking point, particularly after PROP 8.

I know I have.

Anyone who has followed this blog knows how I went from well-functioning, active, contributing member of society to barely functioning with severe P.T.S.D. and the financial and emotional destitution that followed – all preventable with a domestic partnership. But miracles do happen…and I met Bob – a sweet farm boy, a retired Navy Officer, an active member of his Christian Church (a real Christian, not the “christians” like Gary, Larry, and Moe, I mean Stephen), and basically one of the finest, kindest men I’ve ever met. After 2 years of VERY HARD work and his support I had an over-filled studio of 24 students with a growing wait list – which happened because I am a VERY DAMN GOOD teacher of young children – but even that success wasn’t enough when PROP 8 passed in California and it horribly re-triggered my P.T.S.D.  Horribly. The stench of burning hatred was in the air on November 6, 2008, and it’s never left.

So take a second and ponder how I feel now, as Referendum 71 continues to pollute our air.
