Yurman dog tags with or without pave diamonds, $450/$950 - 10% of sales go to Breast Cancer Research Foundation

Last week, I spotted these pink dog tags in a vitrine inside the David Yurman store on Madison Ave.  I was attending a special shopping event for the charity I volunteer for – Bottomless Closet (they provide clothing, interview/resume prep and career-oriented workshops to local NYC women) – so a special THANKS to David Yurman for putting that together!

The dog tags are made out of sterling silver and pink rhodonite, which is a rose-colored stone commonly used in upscale breast cancer-themed products . There is also a more expensive option with pave diamonds (.36cts), which is obviously the better choice.

10% of the sales from the tags will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation by David Yurman. The Foundation strives to raise awareness, encourage early detection and fund research efforts to find a cure for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in the world and women in the United States have a 1 in 8 (12.5%) chance of developing it in their lifetime. So there’s a good chance that if breast cancer prevention and a cure is not already a priority to you, it may become one eventually as this disease affects so many women around us.

La fundación Breast Cancer Research fue creada en 1992 por Evelyn Lauder y está volcada en la financiación para investigar la cura y vacuna del cáncer de mama. Sólo en el año 2008 conceció becas por un valor de 34 millones de dólares entre 166 científicos de Estados Unidos, Australia, Canadá, Israel, Latinoamérica y Europa.

El cáncer de mama en España

El cáncer de mama es el más frecuente entre las mujeres de todo el mundo y su incidencia aumenta con el nivel económico, ya que más de la mitad de los casos se diagnostican en países desarrollados. En España más de 16.500 mujeres son diagnosticadas anualmente de esta enfermedad, y las estadísticas nos dicen que una de cada ocho mujeres padecerá cáncer de mama a lo largo de su vida, y aunque no es habitual, también los hombres pueden sufrirlo.

El próximo día 19 de octubre ha sido establecido el día contra el cáncer de mama, aunque la lucha contra esta enfermedad en fundaciones como la BCRF o la AECCcontinua durante los 364 días restantes del año. Gracias a ello el 80% de las personas diagnosticadas consigue superar este tipo de cáncer, aunque el diagnóstico prematuro es crucial.

It’s a big night for shoe addicts and breast cancer research!

Tonight from 7 PM – 10 PM (ET), tune in to QVC for the “FFANY Shoes on Sale” breast cancer fundraising event.The fashionable event unites QVC with the Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY), who together have donated more than $30 million to the cause.

There will be all sorts of shoes for you to feast on, but it’s boot season, so here’s a preview of your new, selfless, gorgeous boots-to-be.

Moving on, big news for anyone who enjoys Liz Claiborne:

The line is being moved exclusively to Penney’s. Both the men’s and women’s labels are making the move; if things are going well after five years, Penney’s can even buy the name.

Liz Claiborne New York, moves to QVC and the company’s outlet stores.  The WWD story on this notes something TP has wondered about for some time: the perils of watering down a designer’s caché by creating multiple labels sold in similar stores.  As the firm’s CEO, William L. McComb, put it:

“It was time to break the conflict inherent in the strategy that had a lower-priced offering of the Liz Claiborne brand at one department store in the mall [Penney’s] and a higher-priced version of it in a department store across the mall [Macy’s],”

This brings comparisons to American Living, the Polo Ralph Lauren brand sold at Penney’s. Below, a fashion look and a table lamp, both from that collection.

It’s unlikely there is much brand dilution with this line; most retailing insiders believe the line really bears little resemblance to standard PLR merchandise.

Other retailers have done well with designer collections specifically for their customers, such as the Simply Vera by Vera Wang and Dana Buchman lines  at Kohl’s, and Tommy Hilfiger is now sold only at Macy’s or Hilfiger stores.

From a big picture perspective this also allows the Claiborne company to focus more attention on several brands many readers are familiar with: Kate Spade, Lucky Brand Jeans, and Juicy Couture.

This month, like every October, a sea of pink ribbons washes over products from sneakers to snacks. While the effort raises research dollars, it leaves some breast cancer survivors feeling that companies are profiting from their pain.

Exhibit A:

Bloomingdale’s Little Pink Book campaign.

The retail chain pledges to donate $1 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation  (BCRF) for every new email address it collects, and half the $12 cost of every Big Pink Umbrella it sells this month. Not to mention all of the $15 fee for a Bloomingdale’s Insider Card.

That card – as a full-page newspaper ad in the Boston Globe (and elsewhere, no doubt) says – will in turn get you a Give Pink, Get More Card worth up to $250* depending on how much dough you drop at your local Bloomingdale’s.

(Oh yes, the asterisk: “You must make at least $250 in ‘Net Purchases’ of ‘Eligible Merchandise’ to receive a GIVE PINK, GET MORE Card.”)

No indication of what – if any – percentage of pink-pumped-up “Net Purchases” might go to the fight against breast cancer.

Your guess is as good as zero.

So what’s with the pink newspaper?

The Brookline TAB and all other GateHouse newspapers in Massachusetts are painting the town pink this week in support of the American Cancer Society and its efforts to increase awarenes during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In this issue, you will find stories about the state of research and treatment for breast cancer, as well as profiles of breast cancer survivors.

As well as a feature headlined Garden Variety profiling “longtime figures in Brookline’s art scene” Mim and Barney Berliner, whose backyard art gallery is entirely obscured by the pink newsprint.

You can bet the Berliners are sick of pink.

Now that my month of traveling has wound down and my office move is complete, I can get back to my regular routine.  For me, Fridays mean pilates. 

I have a standing “date” with my pilates instructor, Amy, Friday mornings at 9am (her first appointment time).  For one hour she guides me through different exercises aimed at fixing my serious sway-back, toning up my core and if needed, stretching out the muscles that hurt.  We use the reformer, the mat and all kinds of interesting devices along the way. 

I was in a car accident in June and once I was cleared to go back to pilates (about 2 months after the accident) it seriously helped reduce the neck and back pain I had been suffering from.  I also think the year of pilates I had done before the accident reduced my injuries and helped me get back on my feet sooner, as my friend who was with me is still having serious pain.

This month, Shape magazine is doing a “Pilates for Pink” campaign to benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  This is a great way to try out pilates, via a group class and benefit a good cause.  While it’s not the same as private instruction, its much more practical for most and still can give you a rocking core!

Hello-Hello and Happy Friday!

As mentioned in a previous post, October brings an increase in the volume of ‘pink products’ we all see, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Last year we remember the always-wonderful Adventures of a Southern Newlywed doing a post showing many of the ‘pink’ items available that supported varying breast cancer initiatives, and we’re borrowing her idea for today’s post! (Thank you Miss Preppy Newlywed.)

We begin with items we call cosmetics with a cause; below we show the Bobbi Brown Pink Ribbon collection.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  It’s a sad fact that we all seem to know someone affected by breast cancer, whether the person diagnosed, their families or friends.  When that phone call comes and we hear the news, we probably all think of what we can do to help.

During the month of October, My Kids’ Cookies will donate 10% of all website cookie sales to
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.    It’s our way to help find a cure – baking.  The more research that is done, the sooner we can all hope for a cure.

So send someone you know a gift of cookies this month.  Not only will they enjoy the treat, but someone you don’t know will be benefiting as well.

Hello-Hello!  Is everyone else beginning to experience those sure and certain signs of a changing season? We are definitely facing the harsh realities here at Princess InterGalactic HQ, hopefully they aren’t too dreary wherever you may be today.

Most readers are aware the month of October is now accompanied by an explosion of breast cancer awareness products, the majority are fundraisers for either the Komen Foundation or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, although there are numerous other charitable endeavors.

We thought it might be fun to share a few pieces from Lacoste’s In The Pink collection; the items are available beginning October 1.

What is the Princess offering for Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Yeppers, this is the versatile, indestructible Original Dean-O tote from the good folks at Scout.  We have long liked this bag,  both of use several of them. Being able to contribute 30% of proceeds from sales of these to such a good cause sealed the deal for us: one is now atop our little mountain personal collection of totes.

It seem wise to simply say almost the entire post is Pretty in Pink, don’t you think?

Before we fly, two quick tidbits, the first a follow-up to our post offering a Sneak Peek at 3 New Lilly Pulitzer Lines. The delightful author of the story referenced in our post, Julie Naughton at WWD, was kind enough to post comments answering some questions pondered by readers.  Spotty Prep wondered about the eye shadow in the upcoming MAC in Lillyland collection.  Julie offered this insight:

Loxly Gallery is an online showcase developed by photographer and digital artist Deborah Carney.

During Affiliate Summit 2008 East in Boston, Cory Booker, they Mayor of Newark, NJ and keynote speaker at the conference referenced a passage from Luke 12:48, paraphrased as “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

It is a saying that I take to heart and means a great deal to me.  And, Deb knew this.

As a way to show her support on the fight against Breast Cancer, Deb took one of my favorite photos that I shot during my yearly trip to Aruba (a fabulous Aruba sunset) and added the quote to it.

The print is now for sale on LoxlyGallery.com and she is donationg 50% of the retail price to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the charity that AffilateMarketersGiveBack is currently supporting.
