Our Brad, as we have mentioned before, attended to Benson’s gig at Lincoln Hall in Chicago on November 20 2009. He has taking his time and wrote a great review about it. He has compared this experience to the one before at Schubas and also has included a review of Cory Chisel performance. Brad it seems as you and your friend Abbey (hi girl!) got a great time!! Thanks for this. Also the pics included were taken by him!And of course It’s great that you finally got your T-shirt signed!

(Little note to Brad: no one… listen no one…. could done better than Tom Petty lol, sorry Mr. Benson but… Tom Petty is Tom Petty )

“A month ago, due to this wonderful website, I found out that Benson was coming back to Chicago. I had seen him there once before at Schubas, my former review is also on this website (here). Upon hearing the news of his return, I immediately wanted to go; however, my brother who I went with last time was just transitioning into a new job and was unable to attend. The show was a 21 or older show and I was quite thankful that he waited until the month after I turned 21 to come back and play. However, in that same tone, not too many of my friends have turned 21 yet. I decided to invite my friend Abbey (Named after Abbey Road) who I had previously went to a Bob Dylan Concert with. She, never hearing Benson’s music was excited to go, I assumed she would like him because we have the exact same taste in music. Telling her to listen to a few songs before, we were all set and ready to go.
As you can read from my last review, last time I went I met everyone in the band and they signed my shirt, except for Benson himself. Well, this time I was bound and determined to get him to complete the shirt and sign it. On our way to the concert, to get into the mood I put on One Mississippi and My Old Familiar Friend, to acquaint my old familiar friend with the genius of Brendan Benson. She loved what she heard but did not pay too much attention, as she was driving and talking to me. We arrived at the newly built Lincoln Hall about an hour and fifteen minutes early, however the bouncers would not let us in on account of crowding in the bar. So we decided to take a walk to kill time. We went back fifteen minutes later, showed our ID’s and headed into the bar. After opening the doors to the venue we walked in and propped ourselves a little bit to the right of center stage and claimed our spot. I saw someone next to me coming back with the hand bill, so I asked him where he had got it and told me he asked the bouncer. I then did the same and picked up the hand bill, which I was not able to abscond at the last concert.

It was ten minutes past showtime and finally Cory Chisel walks onto the stage with the rest of the Wandering Sons. He then says “I’m sorry for the delay, we were all hanging out upstairs and we lost track of time” Which I found pretty funny. He then started his first song of the night, and having previously listened to his album, I was not surprised as to how good he actually was. But he did shock me a little because, even live can he still sound amazing. His soft melancholy melodies and soft voice can captivate anyone.

After every song he talked about how great it was to be there and back home, also how nice the venue was. His lovely keyboardist/ backup vocalist Adrial Harris was amazing. Her soft angelic voice and pretty face captured my attention from the start. He played a handful of songs from the new album “Death Won’t Send a Letter” including a wonderful ballad that makes me want to cry when I hear it “So Wrong for Me.” His performance of this song was even better in person than on the album. Sipping on wine the entire show and wearing a hat he seemed very happy and honored to be there and be a part of the show.

On his third to last song “Love Is Gone” Brendan Benson himself came out and sang the last of the song with him. Before his last song, I screamed for him to play “Mockingbird” one of my favorites from the album and he then replied “Wow.. someone actually knows our songs, but sorry its too much of a downer for the last song” I was disappointed but I understood, He played “Longer Time at Sea” instead and called it a night. Overall, his performance was tight and very well done, my friend was quite impressed by it.

After a fifteen minute intermission Benson finally came out and came out swinging with “A Whole Lot Better.” Coming out with a bit shaggier hair than last time and a new wedding ring on his finger, his performance was different from the last I saw in many ways.

One being that there was not too much in between song chatter, he went from once song to another without saying much. The upside to this was he fit a couple more songs in this time that he did not last time. Also, he seemed more confident in his guitar abilities this time, whaling more guitar solos, especially a solo at the end of “Feel Like taking you home” which blew my mind, he does not get credit for being a great guitarist but he should.

That being said, his band seem much tighter and seem to have more fun playing this time, probably as a result of playing many more shows in between the two Chicago shows. He played a familiar tune to most there, a Tom Petty cover, “Listen to Her Heart” which my friend Abbey loved being a huge Petty fan.

He nailed the song, at times sounding better than Petty. He played an even amount of songs from all four albums playing a few different songs than at the Schubas gig. One different song being “Crosseyed” Which my friend absolutely loved. After playing the last song before the break, this crowd was one of the best encore’s I have seen. People screaming at the top of their lungs constantly for him to come back out, relentless and wild, he finally showed up again with an acoustic guitar in his hands playing “What I’m Looking For” (which the video was previously posted here.)

After completing that song and thanking the generous crowd and telling Chicago they are “Seriously the best.” He invited Cory Chisel to come back out and they played a Tom Petty cover “American Girl.” They played this song amazingly and really riled up the crowd, after the performance Benson said “Cory Chsiel… Remember that name!”

He then played one more song which was the previously mentioned “Feel Like Taking You Home” and exited the stage. The crowd did not want to leave and stayed for several minutes after. Overall, I think this performance was better than the last, in performance and crowd energy. Although the night was not over for me.
After the show we decided to stick around for a few and see if Brendan would come back out so I could get my shirt signed. After waiting a few minutes a gentleman next to me was doing the same and he asked a roadie if he could bring his vinyl back to Benson to sign and he said yes, then I asked the same with with my shirt and he agreed; he took the shirt and went to get it signed. While he was gone, I noticed that the lyrics that they had on the stage for the two Petty covers were still there, so I took those from the stage as a souvenir. The roadie came back and my shirt was finally completed and signed by everyone in the band! As we were leaving I asked my friend what she thought, she replied with “He was absolutely amazing! Could I borrow your CDs!?” So I gave her my Benson CDs and I am very happy to say that Brendan Benson gained another fan that night! Overall, the night was definitely one to remember and I cannot wait until he comes back to Chicago again!”

Brian, the one who recorded the videos that you can watch here, has been really nice and has written a beautiful review about that night in Minneapolis. I want to thank Brian first for taking the time of writing such an awesome review of the event and secondly for let us being part of the beautiful adventure father and son shared together. Thanks I just love reading it!

“Hello, I’m the guy who took the video’s of the Brendan Benson concert at First Avenue on 11/17/09. It should have been easy enough but thanks to my son who told me that the concert started at 7:00 pm, we ended up having a bit of adventure before, as it actually started at 9:00 pm.

So we left the house at 6:00 pm as we live about 30 minutes out of down town Minneapolis. At 6:30 pm, we found our selves pulling into the parking lot next to First Avenue only to see Benson’s tour bus parked next to the curb next to the dimly lit parking lot. As we pulled in to the lot, we debated as to whether Brendan Benson was in fact in the bus or not. I said he was and my son was sure that he was in the club doing sound check by now. Just as we were pulling my new Pontiac G6 under one of the only lights in the parking lot, seeing as it was new and didn’t want anyone trying to steal it or get it scratched for that matter. No sooner did we pull into the parking stall, my son yells at the top of his lungs, “there’s Brendan Benson!” Just as he was passing in front of our car. If my door was opened, I would have fell out of the car, I was so startled by his outburst. Being just as star struck as he was, I slammed the shifter into park, jumped out as fast as I could but as I’m partially disabled due to a botched spinal fusion surgery, I was slower getting out then my son. By that time Brendan was anywhere from 50 to 75 feet away from us. I yelled out to him, “Mr. Benson! Can we get a picture with you?” With that, his answer was, “I can’t right now. I’m sorry.” Quite frankly, I couldn’t blame him because he didn’t know us from Adam and it was very cold as well as very dark out due to either no street lights next to the club or they were all not working at the time.

As my back starts to burn if I stand for more than 20 to 30 minutes, we brought a wheel chair with us so I’d be able to be comfortable during the concert. My son got it out of the trunk and then we made our way to the club entry only to see the sign on the door saying that the concert started at 9:00 pm. It was only going on 7:00 by this time and we were cold and were starting to freeze our butts off. We saw a car pull up to the entry to the club enclosed parking garage. Not wanting to freeze anymore, we made our way for the entry to the garage before the automatic doors shut and left us out in the cold.

Just as we got inside, we walked up to the guy who’d just drove in before us (assuming he worked for the club) and walked up to him to ask if it was okay for us to go into First Avenue early due to me being in a wheel chair and it being so cold out side. He told us that he worked for the hotel that shared the use of the garage with First Avenue and was not authorized to give us permission as he worked at the hotel and not the club. But he was kind enough to point to the door that gained access to First Avenue. Lucky for us, the door was wide open and we just went right in. My son pushing the wheelchair for me while I sat. I could have walked but unless your in a body cast, you can spend a lot of time explaining to everyone and their brother why a person can be disabled but able to stand and walk for periods of time but not for extended lengths of time due to extreme back pain.

As we walked in the door, we found our selves in the kitchen of the club but no one said anything to us as different acts are there almost every night and for all they knew, we were probably with the band. We made our way out of the kitchen and directly into the club where who do we walk up to but Brendan Benson. He looked at us but was on his cell phone and we could tell that he didn’t recognize us from earlier, due to it being so dark outside at the time and I wasn’t in my wheelchair when I had called out to him asking to get a picture with him. We could tell that he was oblivious to everything and everyone around him as he seemed to be in a deep conversation with who ever was on the other end of the phone line.

We proceeded go from one end of the club to the other as everyone seemed to think we were with one group or another. Just tried to make ourselves look as busy as possible for about an hour or so until the doors were opening for business. Just as they opened the doors for the throngs of fans, my son and I walked (and rolled) up to the ticket booth, paid the admission, got our wrist bands and seeing as we were the first ones in the club, made our way up to the very front of the stage area and immediately made friends with a big guy and his girl friend. Turns out he worked as a bouncer at another place in town and was nice enough to provide a secure area for me in the case any drunks or someone dancing wouldn’t fall on me while attempting to video the concert as best I could from my wheelchair.

We all talked for about 10 or 15 minutes when the opening act started. Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons took the stage. A raspy voiced guy who looked to be a cross between Chris Cornell and Jackson Browne. But the voice and style of music was more like Jackson Browne along with Bob Dylan. A guy who was originally from Appleton, Wisconsin but on his way to the big time. We actually got a chance to talk with him after the show and as it turned out, he had alot more in common with Jackson Browne that I’d originally thought. It turned out that they are actually good friends. I can see why. If I didn’t know better, they could have been brothers as their sound and look was so similar. Chisel’s set was a great one. He was on stage anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. I wasn’t paying much attention to time as I didn’t have a watch and I was just enjoying the music. Great opening act.

Then the lights came up, some more small talk with our new found friends and then, before we knew it the lights went down and the house went wild with loud screaming, applause, and the roar of the crowd going wild for Brendan Benson. He looked every bit the rock star he is. And as cool as he looked up there on stage, he even sounded better. If I hadn’t been sitting right there, I’d have thought I was listening to the record or CD of his music. It was perfect. Note for note, verse for verse. Not one mistake. He really put on one hell of a show. That unmistakable sound along with his trademark look. One song after another. A Whole Lot Better, Folk Singer, Eyes On The Horizon, What I’m Looking For, Don’t Want To Talk, Spit It Out, Good To Me, Cold Hands (Warm Heart), Feel Like Taking You Home. Sheer perfection. Then Benson and his posse of instrument slingers left the stage. Only to come back to do an encore. And then when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Benson invited Chisel on stage to do a couple of cover songs by Tom Petty. Listen To Her Heart and then American Girl. The place was going wild. What a GREAT show!

Then it was over way too soon. But then again, they could have played all night and that wouldn’t have been enough for his fans. What a great night, great music and awesome time we had with Brendan Benson that my son and I will not soon forget. Ever for that matter…”

I wish that I could say that the first video of the album was as creative as the album is.It looks pretty DIY and that there wasn’t enough time put into the story, of which there is none.

We have seven kinds of tea in the cupboard. Is this a lot or not?
I just added two, Pumpkin Spice and Apple Cider, because they seemed so appropriate. So last week we only had 5. Currently I am enjoying a Tazo Organic Chai.

Brendan Benson has a song called Tea, track one on his first record.
“I’m drinking tea. If it’s good enough for me. It’s good enough for you. We could have tea for two. How do you do?”

I saw Benson at First Ave this week. At one point I realized I had reverted back to air guitar and jumping in the air. The album cover and album itself (one of my faves ever) sum up the show and my enthusiasm for it.

That was me on a Tuesday night at 11:30p during “You’re Quiet”. “Tiny Spark” was another highlight along with so many from his older records.

I’ve seen Brendan Benson in the Viper Room (Johnny Depp’s infamous club). I’ve even seen him at Nick Hornby readings. But most people only know him from The Raconteurs with Jack White.

The First Avenue was so sparsely attended I felt bad for BB. Why is he still so unknown? At least Adam, Andy, Steve, Pam and I had a great time.

Check out the albums One Mississippi and Lapalco. Maybe you’ll join us next time.

Lots of cool stuff is happening here at the end of the year. This month alone, my band The Dead Girls has two amazing gigs—one we already played, which was this last Saturday opening for Brendan Benson at the Bottleneck. Here’s a video of us from that show performing “Don’t Change” by INXS.

the Dead Girls – “Don’t Change” (INXS cover) from Nick Spacek on Vimeo.

It turns out that was Brendan’s birthday, too. Who knew he was a fellow Scorpio? That show was so much fun. It was one of those situations where we were all guessing there were not going to be that many people in attendance for our set, at least. We were supposed to go on promptly at 9pm, and that’s pretty early for a Saturday night, post-game Lawrence crowd. But we didn’t really care—we were all just excited to have received the opportunity to open for one of our favorite songwriters of the last decade. His set was really amazing. It was the third time I had seen him, and definitely the best of those three. The four-piece set up he had really suited his songs well, and they were an extremely tight unit, to boot. His new album is probably my least favorite of all of his albums, but it still has a few real good jams on it. Listen to one of my faves right here. Benson is still alive and kicking, though apparently last time he was in Lawrence he sold out the bottleneck. There were less than 200 there this time. I guess that’s the difference a few years and a bad economy make. We didn’t get paid for playing, but we had some friends help sell merch, so we didn’t walk away empty-handed or nothin’. The other sweet show is Friday at the Granada with the Republic Tigers. That should also be quite cool.

Jagjaguwar Records

Musically, I’m trying to be more open minded all the time. I’m trying not to let hype or shit-talk steer me away from listening to something for myself. I really needed to buy some records today. I don’t know why—I guess probably because I haven’t gone to a record store in awhile, and there is definitely something comforting (if not futile and abyss-like) about them. But I went to the new Love Garden today, and it was exactly what I needed. I was only there for about 20 or 25 minutes, which for me is a considerably short trip to the record store. I did find a couple things I had wanted to hear, and though I am a little more conservative about what I buy these days, I had not been able to preview these records previously and just decided to buy them anyway. They were Women’s s/t release from last year and Kurt Vile’s “Childish Prodigy” from this year. So far, I really like what I have heard from Kurt Vile. I can definitely see how he fits into that whole freak-folk thing that’s going on right now, and a lot of that stuff usually kinda bores me. Vile’s stuff has a creepy, dusty kind of vibe, but still has a penchant for pop hooks. I’ll have to listen to it a little more to decide on it for sure, but so far, so good on the Vile. As far as the Women record goes, I have listened to side one, and the only song that really caught my ear was the last track. Everything else just seemed noisy and indulgent. A lot of people seem to be doing stuff like that these days. (For instance, Wavves. Except for an extra “v”, I can’t see how anything can be gained from their debut album, “Wavvves”.) I guess Chad VanGaalen produced it, and though I don’t really know much about him, I did listen to his album Soft Airplane last year a little. It had its moments, and for the most part was not necessarily noisy, but it had its indulgences too. That’s just the thing these days—even the Lips finally TOTALLY bought into their own shit with Embryonic. It’s a great record, and just like almost every Lips record, it sets a pace and sticks with it.

We’re also starting to work on all the promotional stuff for our album, which is FINALLY coming out in January. These projects take a lot out of me, but I love doing them. The satisfaction of seeing everything completed is pretty sweet—that is, if everything is satisfactory. I remember how pissed we all were when we got the Hair Trigger EPs and realized they were duplicates and not replicates. Note to bands—if you want CD replication, MAKE SURE it’s CD replication, not CD duplication. There is a difference! Anyway, it’s always good to know what you are getting, and first, you have to be smart enough to figure that out. It’s a process.

Available from Now Spinning Records 1/19/10

Considering the musical climate right now, I would say the record has a pretty decent chance of doing well. It sounds really good and has a lot of good songs on it, and the album art is fucking badass. We have a label helping us out, but they are basically friends who care about the band and want to help us out, which is truly amazing and I could never thank them enough. But that’s the thing—the fact that it’s a good record, or that we have a label, absolutely does not matter in the music world anymore. Magic is not made by labels these days, and it seems the music itself is even less important than ever. The magic is made by the bands themselves, bands that work really hard to promote themselves in their town and over the web. Touring still helps to gain notoriety and chops, but let’s face it—the music industry is not really the music industry we have come to know and love/hate anymore. It has kind of become a branch of the blogging/YouTube industry. It seems like bands that can utilize tools like these become more successful in this day and age.

True Panther Sounds

Case in point: the band Girls. How did you first hear about Girls? I bet you don’t even know, probably because you glanced at some internet article that mentioned them. It was like this in-passing thing that stuck because it just happened to seem really cool. For how much hype Album has received, it would be extremely disappointing if it were no good. Thankfully, that’s not the case. It’s one of those amateurish, lo-fi wonders—plenty there to scoff at or criticize, but why bother when it’s all so damn fun? This was the perfect record to have for the great summer wind-down. The transition from summer to fall this year called for some sort of appropriate mix of fuck-you and heartache, and Album was just the thing. It’s not very often the album you really need to hear is simply called Album…chew on that for a bit.

Remember Brendan Benson?
Benson will be appearing tonight at the Turner Hall Ballroom (1032 N. 4th) for a 8 p.m. show tonight along with Appleton, Wisconsin native, Cory Chisel.
Thanks to Anna we have some pics from Brendan Benson performing in Berlin. She also sent me the review I was waiting for. Thanks so much for taking your time writing this and sending the pics! So here it is!

“I came to Berlin from Poland especially to see Brendan’s show. It was my first BB solo concert so I was very excited. Gig was in a small club ‘Magnet’ in the center of Berlin. In the same time in Berlin was happening really a lot: U2 was playing a free concert and it was also MTV EMA ceremony in O2 Arena, but I went to Benson’s concert. I was waiting for Benson’s concert for so long that I couldn’t choose anything else that day
Cory Chisel and the Wandering sons opened a Brendan Benson gig. Cory and Adriel played about 6-7 songs, I especially enjoyed ‘In the deep end’. Cory’s very nice and talkative guy. Then was time for Brendan’s show. First song ‘A whole lot better’ he performed alone with an acoustic guitar- it was really breathtaking, after joined the rest of the band. I don’t remember the whole setlist but for sure they played: Don’t Wanna Talk, Folk Singer, Crosseyed, Good to Me, Materie, Sittin’ Pretty, Garbage Day, Cold Hands, Gonowhere, Tiny Spark, Feel Like Taking You Home, What I’m looking for, Alternative to love… They played 2 encores: first one very long about 5 songs and then the second: American Girl with Cory. Except the first acoustic song the concert was full of energy, and very rock’n'roll. I was in the second row and I felt weird when the band was looking at me cos I was singing every song and I had my pretty big camera. The gig was fantastic and I’m looking to see Brendan again.”

Thanks a lot girl, truly appreciated! Enjoy the pics! I love them!
