Yesterday, while everyone was hanging out with friends and family and stuffing themselves with turke

Yesterday, while everyone was hanging out with friends and family and stuffing themselves with turkey and pie, I took a day off – it was exactly what I needed.

I started my day with a sleep in, waking up at 9:30. Plenty of time to catch the 11 am yoga class at the gym, if it wasn’t cancelled. What I hadn’t factored in was that the time could change, so when I called at 9:45 to make sure the class was still on, I discovered it had started at 9:15. Bummer. So instead of heading off to yoga, I did what I never get to do – I read the paper, the morning it was delivered! This is big because my husband usually wakes up and leaves the house around 5 am every morning and TAKES THE PAPER WITH HIM. So I often get the paper at night or days later (depending on when he brings it in from the car), usually after I’ve read most things online anyway.

After the paper, I chatted with my husband on the phone while making some green tea and oatmeal (I cheated and used Trader Joe’s instant cinnamon and spice – sooo good). Then the texts and phone calls started from friends and family. My sister, Jennifer, got me motivated to start my Christmas shopping and in a few hours I had presents for my sister Jennifer and her husband, Dave, my nephew Jack and my Dad all ordered and shipped – thank you Macy’s and Amazon! I also picked up a few small things for my husband and one of his daughters. Tomorrow I plan to get more serious and dive into Black Friday downtown – Nordstrom, Macy’s and Barnes and Noble are on my list. Pike Place Market will be heaven for stocking stuffers, but for edibles, I’m waiting til a day or two before.

I started getting hungry around 1:30 and decided to try out a Shape Magazine recipe I had been eyeing – corn chowder for only 178 cal a cup. Per my sister’s request I videotaped the experience with my Vado HD. The soup, however, was a serious disappointment, so I won’t waste your time with video. Thin and watery does not a chowder make. Maybe it will thicken in the fridge and upon reheating? Doubtful, but I’ll try that before I throw it out. Bottom line: chowder is not supposed to be low-fat.

As yoga hadn’t happened, a workout was in order – I spent 45 minutes on the treadmill while gaining inspiration from the fantastic shape Angelina Jolie is in, in Tomb Raider.

Afterwards, it was nearing dinner so I tried out a recipe for Butternut Gruyère pasta – it turned out pretty well, but at 2 hours to make, it’s quite a commitment. The pasta, coupled with Murphy-Goode’s Fume, was my Thanksgiving entree. Followed by a truly guilty and embarrassing indulgence, Ocean Spray’s cranberry sauce (not the whole berry, the molded kind) – this has been a Thanksgiving staple in my family for years as has the running joke about how long it took us to mold it just so. I had the pumpkin spice bars I made Weds night for dessert. All in all a satisfying meal with a few less calories than the traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

I followed dinner, with a favorite movie, The Mummy. You may be thinking – The Mummy? Seriously? All I can say is men take note, Brendan Fraser’s character in The Mummy (1 and 2 only, 3 was a disaster) is the ideal man. Strong, courageous, smart enough, and super supportive of his uber-smart woman. If you follow his lead, you will go far.

After The Mummy, a long hot bath and then bed.

What did I learn on my day away from the holidays? When you think you need R&R, take it. Also, it is next to impossible to be “alone” on a holiday. I spent 40% of my day fielding texts and calls from friends and family. And you know what, that’s not a bad thing

G. I. Joe – The Rise of The Cobra (G.I.

Nothing is quite as morose as the idea of being forgotten. It’s the very idea that everything that we ever did will be erased by time’s deepening shadow. I personally rue the thought that in the pages of history, I, if anything, will be not even a mere mention, not even a ghost of a name in some intergalactic social studies book of the 22nd century. It’s a dour thought, but at least I’m preceded by a billion nameless and faceless before me who are lost to time, and in a way we will be remembered as those who are lost but not entirely erased from our collective thoughts. Or maybe we’ll all be dead. Who knows? But I’m not the only one who entertains these thoughts; so does the main character in Gods and Monsters, the 1998 Oscar-winning drama from Bill Condon.

It’s a somewhat-fictitious account of the last days of director James Whale that really hits in all the right emotional spots. If you don’t know about James Whale, don’t feel too ashamed. He is a footnote in film’s history, albeit an important one. The director of the original and beloved Frankenstein, the smash sequel Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and The Old Dark House, he was a well-respected director in the industry for much of the 30s, many of his films riding high on a sea of success and positive word-of-mouth. But by the late 30s and into the 40s, his career faltered and struggled as he tried to move on as an artist from his horror days. The industry and movie-goers alike declined to keep up with Whale, and by 1950, he was on the outs. His final years were filled with tumult and personal anguish, and this film takes place near the time of his death in the late 50s. It tells a sensational “what-if” story revolving around Whale’s gardener, Clayton Boone, and their ensuine friendship in his declining years. Boone is straight, while Whale is openly gay, and thought this strains their bond at times when Whale flatly proposes they have sex, it is a rich and compelling relationship that takes both of them in places they never expected.

I genuinely enjoyed this film. It is a perfect blend of romantic film, drama, buddy movie, and that’s all in one relationship! The bonding between Whale, played by Ian McKellan, and Clayton, played by Brendan Fraser, is very touching and genuine, and it is worthy of much of the adulation that has surrounded this film throughout the years. They start out a little coy, naturally so, but it blossoms in such a way that it really beautifies the male relationship and all of its many splendors. It develops in that very special, tentative way that I think any man who is willing to examine the circumstances around which he and his best male friend starting hanging out together will instantly recognize. I like the way the dialog flirts around for a while without talking about the big gay elephant in the room; the subtlety and patience involved is simply amazing.

Bill Condon is a very classy director who reminds me of James Ivory only with more energy. He is an auteur who writes screenplays and shoots them not long afterwards. It sounds very indie and slapdash, but trust me when I say that Condon has a legendary patience with the camera. It’s truly amazing the shots that he gets. My favorite is at a party where Whale has a photo-op with Boris Karloff and Elsa Lancaster, aka Frankenstein’s monster and his bride. It’s such a bittersweet moment that Condon catches like a butterfly escaping the bounds of the earth. His favorite subject, however, seems to be Lynn Redgrave’s character, Hanna. She’s Whale’s caretaker, who disapproves of his deviant sexual lifestyle (it’s a sin, you know). But the gorgeous and breathtaking shots we get of this lovely lady who still has it today do not go unnoticed. She is a strong actress who adds a lot through the subtleties of her character, who you can tell like Whale despite his tendency towards the male persuasion.

There’s a lot to say about Gods and Monsters, and I’ll definitely be covering this in more detail later for an essay. It is a film that has a very passionate message about the end of life, the sadness of obscurity, and the pressing creep of loneliness. It’s as uplifting as it is totally shattering, and nobody can deny its powerful characters and its incredible dialog sequences. It’s probably Brendan Fraser’s best performance by far, it’s another feather in the cap of Ian McKellan, and a brilliant masterstroke by auteur Bill Condon. Old Hollywood’s magic is alive and well in the nooks and crannies of Gods and Monsters, and I therefore give it a well-deserved 9 Hollywood Horror Heroes out of 10! A high recommendation!

Tomorrow I am finally giving The Shawshank Redemption another chance. Many people have called me crazy for not liking it, but we’ll see what I have to say after giving it one final critical opportunity! Until then!!!

If you think this is a Mummy / Indiana Jones cross over then you are sorely mistaken.

The film is based on the true story of John Crowley, a man who fought the system to pursue a cure for his child’s life threatening disease.

You know what, Indiana Jones in a fridge is probably better than this. What happened to Indy and Han?

The Quiet American (2002)

The Quiet American is a film based on the Graham Greene novel of the same name and his characters here have some shades of the characters in his novella-turned-screenplay, The Third Man. In many ways The Quiet American is as true to Greene’s literary work as The Third Man is, and I would even say that it is as good as the The Third Man is within the medium of film. Perhaps it is just that the quality of our present audience has diminished? This is the second film adaptation of Greene’s The Quiet American. This version is as daring as the novel is in retrospect and it is without question light years away from the propagandist elements presented in the shameful 1958 version. Unfortunately the Quiet American was quiet at the box office and failed miserably. More shame, as it is in my humble view one of the best films in the last ten years.

Thomas Fowler (Caine) with Phoung (Do Thi Hai Yen)

The film is set in Saigon in the early 1950s. It takes place right at the end of the First Indochina War but, like the novel, its political snaps are not at the forefront because they are not necessarily intentional, they are assumed. That is probably because only someone lost in the fog of patriotism would dispute them as facts. But the Quiet American is actually a love story. It is about and narrated by, Thomas Fowler (Michael Caine), a British journalist at the twilight of his life hanging onto his youth by falling for a young Vietnamese girl named Phuong. Enter his contrast; Alden Pyle (Brendan Fraser), a naive but educated young American who falls for Phuong and offers her what he sees within his strong moral code as a far better life. That same moral code is tested considerably but to Director Phillip Noyce’s credit, I never see Pyle as a villain and likewise to Fraser’s credit, as he plays Pyle as if he could proudly be him fifty years ago. Unlike Greene’s novel, the film’s ending is more politically charged, but I bought into it and it meshed well with the film overall. I don’t want to reveal more than that for those who haven’t read the novel or seen the movie but it is a fantastic film full of absolutely outstanding performances. The film almost stands in opposition of the 1958 version but in doing so, it is far more consistent with Greene’s novel.

Brendan Fraser as Alden Pyle

It is important to note that the performance of Michael Caine is one of the best I’d seen in years (he was nominated for an Oscar but lost to Adrien Brody for his work in The Pianist). Caine bounds about in this kind of half-alive state from scene to scene, but downplays it just enough that we believe him as a survivor. He is such an amazing actor that easily slips under one’s radar by putting together such simple and restrained performances. He is rarely melodramatic and has never been picky about screenplays, but for me his performances remind me more of real life than almost anyone. Brendan Fraser is also great for many of the same reasons and he also happens to play a cartoon buffoon in nine out of ten roles he chooses. So what? In a rare feature role within a great film, Fraser is absolutely perfect.

Finally, this is a beautifully shot film and was done so on location in Vietnam. Not a common occurrence for sure, and Noyce is kind to soak it in for us. There is something about this film that gives me hope, not in love or war, but in big business filmmaking for taking such a fair and worldly view on a tale worth telling in the cinema once again. On the other hand, was anyone really watching?

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

Over the course of this week, we will uncover twenty titles you need to seek out at your local DVD store. Here is Part 4.

The list is laid out something like this. The title, year it was made, genre, synopsis and finally my rating. I hope to do more of these lists as I uncover some of the treasures hidden at the local videostore.

5. Still Breathing (1998) (Romantic – Drama)

Two lost soul-mates: Rosalyn (Joanna Going) is a cunning con-artist in L.A.and Fletcher (Brendan Fraser) is a secure puppeteer in San Antonio have the same dream linking each with the other.

Fletcher travels to L.A. to find this woman he can’t get out of his mind. “Still Breathing” is the perfect example that man still believes in destiny and true love.

The brilliant use of color, passionate dialogue and soft tones accent Fletcher’s quest for true love. What this film seems to have that a lot of romantic films don’t is a heart and a flawed true love.

Because of those two elements there is a little bit of reality in what the film is saying.

Fall in love with this little movie and always remember the ivy. (4 of 5)

4. Swingers (1996) (Comedy – Drama)

This is Mike’s story. Mike (Jon Favreau) is a left his girl in New York and came to LA to be a star. It’s taken six months longer than Mike would like and he’s not doing so well. Mike’s friends Trent (Vince Vaughn) and Rob (Ron Livingston) take Mike to Vegas to forget about life’s problems.

During that trip Mike is going to find out a little about himself. “Swingers” has a brilliant script, brilliant cast and it’s a lot of fun.

This little cult film made movie stars out of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. It’s so laid back and true to the world that you really relate to these guys.

Vaughn is utterly brilliant as the trio’s leader. He is quick-lipped, charismatic and makes the whole film flow. “Swingers” is a great little comedy to sit back and relax with. (4 of 5) .

3. Unholy, The (1988) (Horror)

A priest (Ben Cross) battles a demon that kills sinners in the act of sinning. “The Unholy” is one of those horror films that blur the line between religion and horror.

Imagine if you were faced with your ultimate temptation, would you give up all you are to have it?

The priest in this film is faced with that temptation and he is just a man. He also is protecting an innocent from the greatest evil man has ever known and being faced with his temptation may condemn that innocent for all time. I used to adore a short-lived television series called “Dark Shadows”.

It was a 1990s revival of a 1960s overly clever gothic soap opera of the same name. The star of that show was a cursed vampire named Barnabas Collins, who was played by Ben Cross.

That show and “The Unholy” are the two pieces of work that stand in my mind when I think of Ben Cross. Sure Cross was in “Chariots of Fire” but these two roles in the macabre are the ones that meant the most to me. If you can get into the mind of this priest and see his internal battle this film will challenge your mind like none other in this genre. (4 of 5)

2. Quigley Down Under (1990) (Western)

Sharpshooter Matt Quigley (Tom Selleck) claims to be the best long distance shooter in the world and is hired from America by Elliot Marston, an Australian rancher (Alan Rickman).

When Quigley arrives in Australia and confronts the rancher he finds a devious and cunning man. Marston’s plan for his employment shocks Quigley and he refuses. Marston tries to kill Quigley as he tries to escape Australia. Quigley finds that Marston is doing the unspeakable deed without him and it looks like Quigley may be the only man to stop him.

A western is a perfect setting for star Tom Selleck. He looks so at home as Quigley and his showdowns with Rickman are ripped right out of the classic westerns. The story is simple and that’s the way westerns should be.

Director Simon Wincer uses Quigley’s marksmanship with intensity and suspense that you are blown away when Quigley picks up his rifle. Rickman plays his villain with panache like he did in “Robin Hood” and “Die Hard”. “Quigley Down Under” is a great little western. (4 of 5) .

1. Pumpkinhead (1988) (Horror)

A group of renegade teens take a trip to the country where one of them is involved in a motorcycle accident. The accident kills the son of the local storekeeper (Lance Henriksen).

Filled with rage, the storekeeper pleads to a witch to unleash an unstoppable demon on the renegades. During the killing spree, the storekeeper realizes he may have a closer connection to the beast than previously thought.

“Pumpkinhead” is as close as one can get to the perfect modern monster film. The film was created and directed by “monster-creator” extraordinaire Stan Winston, who delivers one of the most original creatures ever to grace the silver screen.

Winston also gets an incredible performance out of veteran horror actor Lance Henriksen who brings a lot of passion to his lead character. This is one of the greatest monster-creature films of the horror genre. (4 of 5) .

(Possible Spoiler): A little known realization about this film occurs towards the film’s finale. Look ever so closely at the creature as it faces off against Henriksen. If you look close enough you will see the creature’s face echo Henriksen stating that in fact Henriksen’s soul was apart of the voodoo that created the demon. It’s awesome!

This has he potential to be very, very good, but then again so did Outlander. However, the concept art for Hellboy co-writer Peter Briggs supernatural action thriller Mortis Rex is lovely. Jim Jacks is producing it.

Speaking to Bloody Disgusting Briggs shed some light on how the story developed. “I had the idea for “Mortis” just prior to “Brotherhood of the Wolf” being released. At that point it was simply called “Untitled Roman Monster Movie”…the name “Mortis Rex” came out of something one of the characters says about half an hour into the story. In the early concept, our hero — Cassius Virius — had a female African sidekick, who was mute and did martial arts with a giant carved elephant bone. As soon as I saw “Brotherhood”, I tossed that notion right out the window! And, really, I was glad I did, because the story evolved into something less fantasy-oriented, and became a more grounded and gritty story. Visually, it’ll hopefully be like Ridley’s earlier work. Much more “Gladiator” than “300″. I bumped into “Brotherhood’s” director, Christophe Gans, at Warners a few years ago and told him how I’d had to change my characters…we had a laugh about it.”

The big question is whether the supernatural beastie will be worth watching.

“I’ve been working solidly the last month with our creature designer, Paul Mendoza, and our intention’s to portray onscreen the baddest, nastiest, Lovecraftian-level monstrosity you’ve ever seen,” Brings elaborates. “If you’re a fanboy, you’ll know Paul’s work…he sculpted Wayne Barlowe’s “Decurion” for Sideshow a while back, and the guy’s really a pocket genius. I’ve never seen anything like our creature, onscreen, ever. Period. I zap sketches to Paul, and he blasts finished renderings back over the internet, and then I scribble and Photoshop over them, and zap them back. I’ve had a vision in my head about what the thing should look like since I started writing “Mortis”, but right now we’re about 80% there, and our Big Chap just keeps looking scarier and weirder every time my email goes “ping”. He’s an extremely visually complex creation. He’d eat “Hellboy’s” Ogdru Jahad for breakfast.

The “Hellboy” writer grins evilly, “But our beastie is…very peculiar. Very singular. He’s a big sucker. Quite terrifying. People will be coming out of the theater with their heads blown off. I pity the poor Roman soldiers who have to go up against this thing with their steel toothpicks…”

Casting wise that is still up in the air, but we may get to see some familiar faces.

“Well, I originally wrote the part of Cassius Virius for Lawrence Fishburne, and we were actually down the road talking to him about it when he got pulled onto “CSI”, and we lost him. But Jim Jacks has broken-in or raised up a lot of good actors and stars over the years — Brendan Fraser and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson spring to mind. And having Jim onboard obviously makes this movie very attractive to a whole other level of actor. So, I’m looking forward to seeing what Jim will bring to us. We’ve spent a long time talking cast lists. Interestingly I ran into Ron Perlman at the “Sons Of Anarchy” wrap party weeks back, and I just happened to have my laptop with me and showed him what we were doing. Obviously, I knew Ron from “Hellboy”, and I mentioned that I’d had a smaller role in “Mortis” — a rough, Roman drill Sergeant who gets to chew the scenery — written with Ron in mind. Ron really responded to the idea, and asked when we were thinking of shooting. It’d be fun having Ron onboard.”

All in all Mortis Rex sounds very cool. However, Briggs’ other project sounds equally interesting.

“Well, I’m racing to the finishing post on a rewrite-polish on “Panzer 88″, which is a screenplay by two American writers, Aaron Mason and Jim Cowan, that I discovered. I really wanted to use “Mortis” to springboard me onto a director slot with the studios…basically allowing me to get my hands on all the projects I’ve been writing for the majors for 19 years, like “Judge Dredd” and “Alien vs Predator”, that then got horribly mangled by others. But when I found this script, I knew I’d be nuts if I didn’t do it, even though it’s a much smaller piece even than “Mortis”. “Panzer” is another supernatural thriller: basically a character piece set in a German King Tiger tank in Russia in World War 2. It’s five guys in a tin can, and something’s trying to stop them making it home. It’s creepy, and smart. I’ll be directing that too. There are a bunch of producers jockeying to get their hands on this right now…I’ve had a few meetings with Gary Kurtz (“Star Wars”, “American Graffiti”, “Dark Crystal”) back in London, and I really like the idea of doing “Panzer” with him. I was surprised by Gary. For a producer with such All-American movies under his belt, he absolutely gets the very dark, European sensibility of the piece. I guess I’m very lucky with my producers right now.”

How do you like them apples? Does Mortis Rex float your boat? Who would you like to see star in it and any ideas what the creature will look like?

So. I’ve heard a couple of complaints that this blog is, “like, so whatever,” in the sense that it’s hard to follow and who has time to read all those hyperlinks anyway? I’d estimate that our goals with this little endeavor break down roughly as follows: 70% = Russ and Dave amusing themselves/each other; 20% = Russ and Dave trying/failing to amuse 3 or 4 friends; 9% = trying to impress the chicks and 1% = I wonder what the Japanese person who was looking for information about Brendan Fraser thought when he/she found us?

Does that breakdown say terrible things about us?

Sinopse:

Betyg: 2
