Tensions are high with the Minnesota Vikings this week, after a “heated discussion” between quarterb

Tensions are high with the Minnesota Vikings this week, after a “heated discussion” between quarterback Brett Favre and coach Brad Childress.

If you don’t already know what happened, I’ll fill you in. It all started with a conversation on the Vikings sideline Sunday. Brad Childress was looking to bench Favre in the game against the Panthers on Sunday, while the Vikings were up 7-6. Brett Favre adamantly disagreed, and went on to play the rest of the game. Minnesota was eventually beaten 26-7, as the Carolina Panthers scored 20 unanswered points in the 4th quarter. Favre also threw an interception in the final minutes of the game.

Now the debate has begun on whether Brett Favre should be benched for the rest of the regular season.

I believe he should be benched. Brett Favre has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in the last few games, signaling that he needs to take a break before the playoff run that the Vikings may make.

The Vikings don‘t want to make the same mistake that the Jets made last year. Favre was outstanding for most of last season as quarterback of the Jets, but his level of play trailed off at the end. The Jets were in playoff contention all year, but failed to make them. The Vikings certainly don’t want the same thing to happen to them.

Also, it’s not as if their backup isn’t a good quarterback. Their 2nd stringer is Tavaris Jackson, a former NFL starter (and would have started this year if not for Favre). The Vikings would still have a great leader at the helm of the offense, and would still have a great chance of winning out.

Minnesota has already clinched a playoff spot, so why not give your starting QB a rest?

Benching Favre would be a great decision by Brad Childress.

So I was trying to remember 2009 so that my last post of the year chould be a review of sorts…

So I was trying to remember 2009 so that my last post of the year chould be a review of sorts…but I really couldn’t remember anything.

So then I went through my facebook photo albums and the ones that stand out the most are (in no particular order):

1. day in the park/beach – in Jan, Brett decided that for his birthday celebrations he was going to help out with a take-the-kids-from-an-orphanage-out-for-the-day-to-the-beach-and-love-them-day thing…and he invited people to go and help out, and i went, and it was awesomtastic. then in april and again in november some people from our church organised a take-the-kids-from-an-orphanage-out-for-the-day-to-the-park-and-love-them-day thing and once again i decided to join in. and again it was awesomtastic. i’m not the most kid-friendly person in the world…like, i would suck at being a kindergarten teacher, but i really do enjoy spending time with kids and just loving on them and making them feel wanted and loved and adored and listened to and whatever, even if it was for one day atleast they got to feel special.

2. vision k/youth/scripture union camp – as i said, i would suck at being a kindergarten teacher. and i would probably suck at being a middle/high school teacher as well, but if i had to choose, i would go for the middle/high school age group. so i’ve talked a bit about my exploits with vision k this year, and i may have mentioned the scripture union leadership camp as well – can’t remember, but yea, both of those and the youth group at my church have been highlights in my life this year. i truly do enjoy hanging out with youth and finding out where they are and if possible helping in their journey towards adulthood. i’ve been through the teenage years myself, and sometimes i still act like i’m going through them, and i remember how hard it was for me, so any help i can give someone else…

3. turning 25 – i liked turning 25. scary, yet…super cool. like i felt like i was finally an adult in a lot of ways. turning 26 is not scary, but it feels kinda sucky, don’t know if i’m going to enjoy it much.

4. namrock/baptism – so wrote a lot on namrock, and wrote about getting baptised. and definite highlights they were.

5. worship team – lots of memories. lots of laughs. lots of growing. thankfulness.

6. http://tsholo.wordpress.com/2009/10/02/worship-setlist-september-27-2009/ – i’ve been to PE quite a few times, and i always…well, i guess hate is a strong word but…well, it’s the right word. i always hated it. i was ok with like 2 days, but after that i was ready to leave. this year my dad moved to PE, then my sister also moved there. at the end of the year my lil bro is also moving there. so it will just be me and my mom in the western cape (sadness). but yea, the visit in september was so awesomtastic, i didn’t want to leave. and i’m looking forward to visiting again first week of next year…and throughout 2010. PE Love!

7. flatmating – had a super awesomtastic flatmate this year. i learned a lot from her and i totally appretiate the flatmate she was and all the talks and all the laughs and discovering “The OC” together and our late night dvd’ing and sms’ing each other from the other side of the wall and the sharing and all of it, it’s been great Lindz, will miss sharing a flat with you.

8. music and friends – the south african music scene is wow! and it’s even better when it’s live, and it’s shared with friends. new altum, flat stanley, just jinjer, aking, gravity wins again, straatligkinders, irvine, lua union, the lottery tickets, heldervue, black markets riots, 3rd world spectator, saint fearless, the rescue, tree63, the arrows, bed on bricks – just off the top of my head. memorable moments also include: being kidnapped and forced to go to the beach at 2 am when i was working the next morning, sneaking into the botanical gardens after it was closed and having a photo shoot after making a 20 minute video of us talking nonsense, TEAM AWESOMTASTIC, awesomtastic enGAGE dinners at Ginos and awesomtastic cricket watching at Ginos, SUPER inappropriate conversations and the birth of SOKs…and so much more…I really thank God for friends!

and then two more not in the photo albums, just to round it off

9. blogging – nablopomo(?) was really good for my blogging…blogging everyday for a month is not easy, totally respect those who do it year round. good and challenging. blogging has been so good for me though. it’s been a place for me to just spill what’s in my head onto something else and just get it out of my system so that it doesn’t take over. so thank you for reading.

10. God – lots of up and downs, lots of screaming and shouting, lots of late night pop-corn and cookies and ice-cream (He loves those), lots of laughing, lots of reminders, lots of fulfilled promises, lots of pouring on of LOVE, lots of us time, too much ingnoring from my side, lots of forgiveness, lots of convictions, lots of happiness and joy, more love and more reminders, lots of blessings, lots of breathe, lots of guidance, lots of mercy and grace, more love, lots of comforting, lots of more reminders for/to hope, lots of everything. Everything and LOVE!

================

and one more that had nothing to do with me but stands out this year was the wedding of the fish and TBV…read about it here.

Survivor Samoa Finale: There’s Something About Russell December 20th, 2009 When Survivor start

Survivor Samoa Finale: There’s Something About Russell

December 20th, 2009

When Survivor started its nineteenth season, there was a man named Russell. Pot-bellied and stubborn, Russell emerged as if pre-fabricated to play the role of villain in Mark Burnett’s game. He came in with no desire to make friends, and started emptying out canteens and burning socks. It was the most aggressive villain edit the show had ever seen, which meant one of two things to me: either Russell was going to be leaving very quickly (hence the show maximizing his villainy time) or else there was more to Russell’s game than this villainy would seem to indicate.

Russell proved inherently divisive in those early weeks: some people hated him, and felt as if he was ruining the season with his heartless ways. But something changed in the game that made Russell seem less villainous. His tribe, Foa Foa, started getting clobbered in challenges, which meant that Russell’s victims were becoming victims of the game itself. And so Russell didn’t have to be a villain anymore, just watching as his tribe lost every challenge and revelling in his ability to manipulate his tribe into voting how he wanted them to vote. And suddenly instead of someone who was operating against the game (burning socks, disrupting daily life), Russell was simply a puppetmaster enjoying as the rest of his tribe stopped thinking for themselves.

And then the game became Russell’s, to the point where behaviour that before felt obnoxious (like finding the immunity idol without a clue) suddenly became genius, and where his manipulations went from an unnecessary force in the game to a brilliant strategic advantage that took the four remaining Foa Foa members from a severe disadvantage to standing as four members of the final five heading into the show’s finale. And somewhere along the way, the game went from being Russell’s to ruin to being Russell’s to win, and in many ways this finale has come down less to who wins and more to whether or not that person is Russell.

That’s the joy of Survivor, really: if you had told me that at the beginning of the season, I never would have believed you.

The most amazing part of Russell’s journey this season is that we have known from the very beginning every part of Russell’s strategy, and yet we haven’t seen any of the other players pick up on it. He had an alliance with every single player, and yet no one seems to have figured this out. If I had any emotional attachment to these people, I would have lost my voice screaming at the television weeks ago, but the fact that Mick, Jaison and Natalie have all gone along with his plan has become a sort of perverse entertainment. Jaison has convinced himself that Russell is actually his frontman (which is by far the most delusional response), Natalie is honest about choosing to ride Russell’s coattails, and Mick seems to know that Russell is a snake but in his passive leadership tradition has decided to just let it slide and hope it sorts itself out.

Perhaps some of it is editing, where the focus has been more on Foa Foa’s strength in uprooting the old Galu as opposed to their underlying tension, but we just haven’t seen these people acting intelligently. And in most seasons this would have led to frustration over the players simply being too stupid to see what is happening around them, but Russell has made it all feel like a marvellous side show. It’s been proof positive that this game is unpredictable, and that some magic with immunity idols (which was admittedly manipulated by producers) could turn this game around so easily. And sometimes we forget that Russell wasted one of his idols at the merge, so it’s not like he’s played a flawless game. That moment proved he was human, which made his fellow players all the more stupid for not trying to make a move against him earlier.

And they pay for it, because the one time Russell was in a position where eliminating him would have made sense he pulls off an absolutely stunning Immunity victory in a nailbiter of an immunity challenge. That tiny little statue meant that Russell was going to the Final Three, and with that his goal was achieved: all of his immunity idols, and all of his manipulations, were for this moment. But what we see of Russell heading into that Final Four vote is someone who isn’t as cocky as he acts, who is concerned about jury votes even while acting as if he has the game in hand to his fellow competitors. And even when we know that Russell’s sudden streak of meritocracy is a play for votes, an act to make it seem as if it is a hard decision to eliminate Brett from the game. But yet what we see behind the scenes is not some evil mastermind, but a strategic player whose bravado doesn’t hold up under scrutiny, who seemed like he was more unsure than his cockiness seemed to indicate.

And what’s fascinating is how Russell expects everyone to choose him over Natalie and Mick, to the point where he basically tries to serve as judge by telling them the kinds of questions that will keep them from winning a million dollars. And perhaps he forgot that people eventually learned what he does for a living, and perhaps he forgot how no one in the game ended up trusting him in any capacity. Russell makes the jury out to be Dominos in his opening address, and even when we as the audience know he is unquestionably objectively correct (Mick was a leader who never led and Natalie was a wallflower who never made a move) there’s still that chance that the jury (made up of finicky Galu members who have found this game as perversely entertaining as we have) could work against him. And there’s a certainty to Russell that seems like hubris, that feels like it would turn out to bite him in the ass before things are over.

And then it did. Russell’s confidence was read as cockiness, and Erik’s impassioned speech upended his gameplay in a way that reminded the jury that they, and not Russell or Natalie or Mick, define what it means to be the sole Survivor. And just because Russell believes that Outlast, Outwit and Outplay means being a strategic player who cheats and lies to everyone, that doesn’t mean that the jury has to agree with them. This is a highly subjective game, and the sheer power of definition found in the jury is more powerful than Russell’s belief that he played the game “right” or “better” at the end of the day. And because the jury didn’t have the narrative that we had, where Russell went from a lousy snake to a grand serpent, they had only a man who was proud of having eliminated all of them by outlying, outcheating and outboasting.

So no, I don’t agree that Natalie deserves the title of the Sole Survivor over Russell, but that’s not my decision to make nor is it as objective as Russell wants it to be. What’s so funny about Russell is that he came into this game in a way which defied the expectations, burning socks and emptying canteens and ignoring clues that the game was supposed to provide. And yet, he argued in the reunion show that he actually took the game more seriously than anyone else, implying that taking the game seriously means playing the game with absolutely no moral compass. And that’s just too subjective a statement to make in a game that has such social ramifications, and it was a gameplay strategy that won over producers and the audience (who awarded him the title of Player of the Season) in a way that it would never win over those people who are sitting on the sidelines.

As to whether the vote is a travesty, I would argue that nothing in the world of Survivor could possibly be a travesty, as I simply don’t agree with Russell that this is a game to be taken seriously. It is, in fact, a game, and I think that all you can count on is taking yourself seriously and viewing your experience through your own perspective. Russell can be proud of how he played the game, but he can’t expect for his fellow players with venom coursing through their veins to feel the same way. And in the end, that is what cost him a million dollars.

But it didn’t cost us a really entertaining finale, both in terms of the challenges (two close immunity fights that came down to heated battles, especially the enormously tension-filled statue challenge) and in terms of that final jury. There wasn’t a definitive jury address outside of Erik’s efforts to sway the jury (which I was surprised didn’t come up in the Reunion Show in terms of whether it changed anyone’s minds), and Mick was as useless then as he was before, but it really all came down to the reunion show, which is perhaps the finest the show has ever seen. Russell was in fine form, looking emotionally distraught at some points but then turning on the bitterness through the rest, and between the sock burning and his efforts to buy the title of Sole Survivor for the cool sum of $100,000 (up from his initial offer of $10,000) he was everything you hoped he would be. And the discussion was some of the best we’ve seen, involving a lot of different people and demonstrating how differently they saw the game and getting actual insight into how it changed them. Heck, even Brett had something useful to contribute, even if Jeff never asked him whether he was in a waking coma for the first three quarters of the season.

And that’s really the problem here. Russell feels as if the game has been tarnished by his loss, and he’s right that it doesn’t reflect kindly on the jury’s objectivity. However, the producers are happy to have had an amazing season, and we as an audience have to be pleased that we got a pretty great finale irregardless of its winner. And so while everyone else is celebrating a banner year for a show in its 19th season (unheard of), Russell is licking his wounds, left to wallow in his own self-pity with only his oil money and his loving family to get him through his days as the Almost Sole Survivor.

Cultural Observations

In terms of Russell’s sadness, we now know that Russell is going to be back in February as part of Heroes vs. Villains (actually, we’ve known it for a while); as a result, do we presume his disappointment was perhaps magnified by the knowledge that in the season he finished filming this fall he doesn’t get far enough to be in a position to win the top prize? I think Russell’s attitude would have been different if he had.

Speaking of Heroes vs. Villains, the full cast lists are kicking around the net, but the interesting thing is how much they featured Richard Hatch despite the fact that he is the one contestant anyone reading the news should know isn’t attending, as he asked the courts to allow him to travel in order to take part and his request was denied (he’s serving under house arrest for tax evasion charges).

Feckless, in case you were wondering, is a synonym for incompetent. Shambo’s jury speech, like her exit speech, was far more cogent than I would have expected considering her gameplay, so I’ll give her props for that.

Interesting on the Jury how John, after Natalie finally plays the rat card, pretty much tells her “That’s what we wanted to hear more of earlier” as if they were making sure their eventual votes for Natalie made sense as opposed to actually being open to changing their decision.

Best jury question: Kelly, hands down. Her question to Russell about how his gameplay reflects in his real life wasn’t framed as an attack, but rather as a legitimate question that I’m sure some members of the audience were asking as well. It might not be entirely relevant to the decision in my mind, but it was a well-put question that got to the core of the jury’s problems with Russell’s gameplay strategy.

Love, Your Mom

40 Weeks, 6 Days Pregnant
21 Hours to Induction

Tomorrow’s induction has definitely been on my mind. My original goal for Awesome’s birth was to go drug free. And if you’re shrieking something like ‘Yeah, first-time moms always say that’ or ‘Good luck with that!’ or ‘Just get the epidural’ or any other version of ‘You must be delusional/crazy/sadistic/a hippie,’ my answer is this: Thank you for your input. Now zip it.

I made the decision to try to go drug-free because I thought, why not? The body is equipped to handle the pain physically and chemically (though I’m starting to doubt my own body is), my hips are fuh-reaking HUGE, and studies show babies born after drug-free births nurse successfully at a higher rate. So that was my goal. I wasn’t dead set on it — not to the point where I was going to feel like a failure if I ended up with an epidural — but that was my goal, and I hoped I could do it.

So then this induction thing came up. And I wished really hard to avoid it. But I’ve kind of lost hope at this point (21.5 hours until induction). The doctor said the “rate of fetal demise” goes up after 41 weeks, so we can’t just wait it out. But here’s the catch: Most women who plan drug-free births don’t end up doing them; and nearly all women who plan drug-free births who have to go on Pitocin (which I’ll be pumped full of on Tuesday morning), can’t do it. Pitocin is a drug that is a synthetic version of the body’s hormone oxytocin, which occurs naturally to start contractions; when they push Pitocin on a patient, it makes contractions stronger than those from oxytocin. And as my doctor confirmed, most women can’t handle the artificial contractions and are more confined to their hospital bed throughout labor than women who aren’t induced. Mobility was a big part of my coping plan.

Because the contractions are so much more intense, most women opt for an epidural, which (also confirmed by my doc) counteracts the Pitocin, so they have to push more to keep the contractions going. The doctors also will break my water if the contractions don’t do that themselves, and once that occurs, I have 12 hours to deliver before I’m carted off for a C-section. Oh, and the use of pitocin in general has a higher rate of C-sections.

Reminder: The title of this post was “Induction: On the Bright Side.” Why? Because I’m trying to get past the facts of the past three paragraphs. So, here we go. The plus side of having labor induced:

I know exactly when I have to go to the hospital.

I can fix my hair, wear makeup and make sure every piece of clothing I wanted to have at the hospital is washed, dried and packed.

I know I’ll have time to vacuum before we go — minimizing the amount of dog hair for when Awesome gets home.

No rush on the way to the hospital; we can leave a half-hour early and take a leisurely drive downtown without worrying about getting pulled over or hitting huge bumps while I’m in labor or my water breaking in the car.

The hospital is expecting us. There is practically no chance they’re going to tell us to leave because hey, we have an appointment.

I can plan my day accordingly — only healthy foods and a nice walk will put me in a great state for the next couple of days of work.

Easy to rest up — Brett and I know we need to get a good night’s rest tonight so we’re as ready as can be for the next few days.

I know who my doctor will be. With an eight-doctor practice, spontaneous labor would have meant any of the doctors could have been on call. I know which doctor will probably be delivering Awesome (he’s not my fave, but at least I’ve seen him before).

So that’s my list of on-the-upsides. Has anyone else been induced? What was your experience?

40 Weeks, 4 Days Pregnant
3 Days until Scheduled Induction

We had our second nonstress test today, and Awesome is still doing great. The heart rate was just where it should be, and the tech didn’t even have to buzz our little one! I had two contractions while I was all belted in, so that’s good, but they aren’t strong enough to make any progress — this might be too much information (I’ve been discussing the appropriateness of talking about this subject with other moms, and there isn’t a clear concensus), but I’m still not dilated at all.

The doc gave us a 30 to 40 percent chance of going into labor before our induction on Monday night, and said we should do what we can to induce labor ourselves. We looked at him like, YA THINK? Not that we blame him for saying it, but seriously, like I’m just sitting here wishing I could stay pregnant forever. His suggestion: “Walk and have sex.” Good thing Brett and I don’t have anything else going on.

The other memorable doc quote of the visit came when he checked me for dilation: “Damn cervix.”

I like to attribute my overpriced WORLD-CLASS journalism degree for my desire to keep anyone up to date who is interested enough to want to know when Awesome is getting here. That’s why I’ve decided to Tweet any news as soon as we share it with family by phone. So, in case you’re wondering if I’m in labor RIGHT NOW, worry no longer. You can always check my Twitter (there’s a Twitter update sidebar on the left of this blog: ‘LooseGripTweets’) for any relevant updates, as well as other random thoughts (hurray! more random thoughts from me!).

Brett has taken responsibility for the task of calling people once we are ready to let people know things are happening, so either he or I, or once things really get moving, one of my sisters, will be doing updates on Twitter.

Another thing you may have noticed is my recent increased visibility in places like Twitter and Facebook. And contrary to popular belief, it’s because of more than just the fact that I’m not working and have no baby, thus igniting my obnoxious boredom and seemingly constant updates. I actually figured out how to configure my blog, my Twitter and Facebook so that when one is updated, each networking site reflects it. How tech-savvy am I? (Not very actually, that’s why it took me all this time to do it.)

Anyway, today really flew by compared to the past three days. My mom hosted her annual Christmas coffee, so I got to visit with people (and see two darling babies!), including my best friend JESS! who is just back for a few days from Colorado, and eat deliciously unhealthy pastries. Then I came home, where my two darling but stinky dogs were waiting to be bathed. Now they are fresh-like-a-garden smelling fluffballs. THEN, I got a pedicure. Someone told me last night that they knew someone who went into labor after getting a pedicure. It was relaxing, but alas, no labor. Tomorrow’s task: another nonstress test and a meeting with the doc.

The “Set up” episode for the 2-hour- finale -extravaganza on sunday night.

This was an unusual episode…for many reasons:

Since when did the blonde girl speak? And since when did she not only speak…but become a “prayer warrior”? (…wasnt Shambo Gods messenger?)

Brett is such a nice guy…that he (risks his life to ) massage Shambo’s…HAIR! He put his hands in that thing on top of her head (and down her shoulders…but shorter on each side…aka fem-mullett), that mop that she called “shambo-licious” and revealed it had been the same since 1986 (Do you know how many haircuts I’ve had since then? One of which happened to be…my very FIRST!)

Remember when Foa Foa was a lowly group of 4 against 7 Galu?!?! Those 4 still stand…and are now in totally control.

Did producers really want to send Shambo, to represent the American people, on a reward breaking bread (and pig on a spit) with locals? Well, She did…after her, Russell and Jaison won the reward challenge (a big, island version of Ker-Plunk! with coconuts)

Brett beats all odds again, as the lone Galu member (Shambo doesnt count…) wins immunity with eliminationon the line…and Foa Foa begins to scramble…to vote off either Shambo or one of their own

Russel once again wears his immunity necklace to tribal…and doesnt use it. It’s just decoration now…it brings out his eyes.

In the end, Foa Foa stay true…voting out SHAMBO! (I was kind of disappointed with her composed farewells…but hopefully she’ll be back to form for the Jury questioning…my favourite part of the entire season.)

So Russel still stands, he has to get through the next Tribal counsel (without his found immunity) in order to face the Jury in hopes of winning it all. the question is…will Brett continue to win immunity and foil his plans? If not, who will Russel decide to take with him to give him the best odds…would anyone vote for the blonde based on “merit”…doubtful, who has the btter shot…Mick or Jaison?

An exciting sunday awaits us Survivor fans…
