I’ll be getting my copy sometime today. Check back later for more details! UPDATE I was at Bar

I’ll be getting my copy sometime today.

Check back later for more details!

UPDATE

I was at Barnes and Noble when it opened its doors at 9am. The sales clerks in the DVD section had no idea what I was talking about but eventually located a copy with a retail price of $59.99.

Unlike the covers for the previous few seasons, this one doesn’t feature a cast shot but rather individual pictures of the characters. Staring out from the center is Hilary Swank (Carly). I’ve been complaining about this ever since the art was first released as Swank was only in 16 episodes. Sure, she was billed as a lead character (and hired to be in the whole season) but with limited cover space, that spot should’ve gone to Vincent Young (Noah), who was not only in every episode of the season but also seasons 9 and 10. I’ve been told the decision to put Swank front and center was a marketing decision designed to capitalized on the Oscar winner’s recognition factor. Apparently that applies to the individual disc covers as well as Swank is also featured prominently on one of those while this time the MIA actor is Brian Austin Green (David), who’s been with the series since Day 1.

The back cover also doesn’t feature Young but manages to include him and everyone else in the description (though in a different order than the opening credits): “The Real World: 90210…School is over and the friends of Beverly Hills 90210 are discovering that life after graduation is not as easy as they thought! Come along with Brandon (Jason Priestley), Kelly (Jennie Garth), Donna (Tori Spelling), David (Brian Austin Green), Steve (Ian Ziering), Val (Tiffani Amber Thiessen), Noah (Vincent Young), and Carly (Hilary Swank) as they explore love and life outside of college in all 30 titillating episodes of Season 8. Experience Kelly’s recovery from a drive-by shooting, Brandon and Kelly’s wedding plans, and Donna’s drug overdose. It doesn’t take long for the gang to discover that the real world can be just as unpredictable as college.”

The set contains 7 discs with descriptions on the back of the individual cases. It’s pretty much a given there’s going to be errors (or, at the very list, vague summaries that miss the key points) but there are some doozies here! (1) “Racial lyrics lead David’s band, After Dark, into problems.” First off, the band wasn’t David’s–he was pseudo-managing them. But more importantly, After Dark is the name of the club that’s been on the show since season 5, not the name of the band (which was actually called Cain Was Able). (2) Continuing with the band name errors, they say “a member of Jasper’s Legend tries to sue Noah after a car accident” but the band was called Jasper’s Law. (3) We’ve got a serious reversal of events when they say “Valerie accuses Noah of date rape when she wakes up without any memory of the night before…and Donna and David get into a car accident.” Considering Donna and David’s interaction is partly the catalyst for Valerie and Noah even sleeping together, the order is crucial. (4) And the biggest error comes in the description for the two-part series finale: “Kelly takes an AIDS test after she comes into contact with the blood of an HIV patient. Trying to calm their new female news achor, Brandon ends up getting her drunk. Mel issues David an ultimatium. Valerie anxiously awaits her HIV test results. Brandon and Kelly have some very big news for their invited guests a few hours before the wedding.” The first half of that (from “Kelly…” to “…ultimatium” is from an episode in season 7! That’s right, folks. How a description for an episode that wasn’t even in this season–and wasn’t even a season finale, for that matter–ended up merged with the description for the actual season finale is beyond me. And, just to be totally accurate, Brandon and Kelly had their “surprise” *at* the wedding, not hours before.

Also worth mentioning is the pamphlet advertising other shows on DVD, including 90210: The First Season. The description reads: “New Drama. Same Zip. There’s a new generation in town, and they’re turning up the heat at West Beverly High. For hook-ups, break-ups, drug busts, and betrayals, 90210 is the place to go for the ultimate in guilty pleasures! Packed with Special Features.”

Unfortunately, this set isn’t “packed with special features.” Just as it was with season 7, my biggest complaint is the absence of special features altogether. I can only hope they are making some kick-ass ones for a complete series release. (And if there’s no complete series release, I’ll be hella pissed.)

Season 9 comes out in February.

Stay tuned!

There are few things I love more than a free lunch. But don’t worry, my standards for free food are just as high as paid-for food when it comes to taste.

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green were recently spotted at Zach's. Wait, are they together? Wait, why do I care?

Zach’s Café catered lunch for our office today, and it was a pretty solid menu. There were two salads: a simple green and one with candied walnuts. I’m allergic to nuts, so I went with the simple green. Their balsamic dressing is one of the best I’ve ever had — rarely do I get this worked up over salad dressing. A great start to a good meal.

Their garlic cheese rolls are amazing. They’re savory and soft and I’m thinking about getting another one after I’m done writing this review.

Our main dishes were Eggplant Parmigiana, Shrimp Alfredo, and some sort of Ravioli with Creamy Marinara Sauce.

My favorite was by far the eggplant parm. It was flavorful and done to perfection, as opposed to the shrimp alfredo which was a little overcooked (I like my pasta perfectly al dente — my sixty-year-old coworker was loving it, though). The ravioli was good, but I can’t eat too much ravioli.

I’d like to eat here again. Preferably for free.

One Month Later:

Wishes do come true! Another pharmaceutical rep came in with Zach’s!

This time, we had the Angel Hair Pomodoro with Shrimp. The shrimp were perfectly done, which is hard to do for a catered lunch, so I was pretty impressed. And this time, the pasta was perfectly al dente, thank goodness.

We also had some sort of White Fish with Rice and Capers, and I was totally shocked at how tender and flaky the fish was! Man, Zach’s can do seafood up right!! The rice, however, was a little mushy.

And those garlic cheese rolls… man, forget the pasta. I just want some garlic & cheese perfection!! The rolls are so delightfully chewy, and neither the cheese nor the garlic is overwhelming.

What I wouldn’t do for one of those rolls right now.

Since last we spake of all things Smallville, the season premiere of Season 9 has come and gone:

Since last we spake of all things Smallville, the season premiere of Season 9 has come and gone: “Baby” Zod introduced, Tess the not-quite-hot Lex replacement reintroduced, Chloe weepy, Lois flummoxed, Green Oliver shirtless. And, of course, Kal-Neo with the black trenchcoat. To my surprise, early on in the plot there was a brief argument with Jor-El (The Useless) about flight, which the writers are setting up to be something of a reverse-impotence problem: whenever Clark thinks of Lois he can’t get it up, or rather, he’s never gotten it up. There’s even a throwaway scene where Clark leaps from the Statue of Liberty and plummets (the outcome is never shown so we can assume he went straight into the ground).

Most of the show was TIVO chow, that is, filler and needless exposition, but that’s true of most shows. The Kryptnonian Ninja-Girl who looked like a rip-off of a Mortal Kombat character made little sense. In the “sky train” she and Lois trade blows but later on KNG is seen using heat-vision. Well, does she have The Powers or not?

KNG introduces an extra minute or so of hot barn combat that comes free-of-charge with every Season Premiere. It was pleasing to see Clark FINALLY kicking some ass/holding his own after ninja-girl uses blue K to temporarily strip his powers. Before exiting stage left KNG warns Clark that he betrays everyone ‘one year from now’. Even Marty McFly had the good sense to write a goddamned letter explaining WTF is going on; just seems like common sense for any time traveler would be to have a ready explanation DVD or other media for when she meets herself, knowing she might be killed or knocked out on arrival.

Ah yes, I almost forgot, the most magical MacGuffin of all, the Power Ring which can alter entire plotlines in a single bound, and which in future eps will no doubt be used to bring Jimmy Olsen back and possibly even Lex.

The scenes with “Baby Zod” were all right, Callum is trying his best. The best thing about Zod and Friends are those Kryptonian army dog tags they wear, which I hope the WB has the good sense to make and sell to many nerds such as me.

“Special Guest” Brian Austin Green I’ve saved for last because his character runs right into the second episode, where he, as John Corbin, mysteriously becomes Metallo. It’s a mostly useless, predictable transformation, using the absurd and totally fake-looking CG hit-by-a-speeding bus effect. Corbin awakens not knowing how or who or why he suddenly has a kryptonite heart (in case he seems too sympathetic, writer laziness also has the kryptonite affecting his brain to make him ‘eviler’).

Actually, 9-0-2-1-Metall-0 makes a surprisingly strong case against Clark and his meddling. Turns out Clark saved a busload of prisoners from crashing…one escaped and raped and killing Corbin’s sister. To Corbin (and me) Clark is ultimately responsible for this negative outcome. It may not be right, it may not be fair, but godlike powers = godlike blame. Now we all know Superman doesn’t kill, but given the choice between saving a runaway bus loaded with rapists and killers blessedly heading for a tall rocky cliff of taxpayer savings or rescuing a kitten from a tree 100 miles away in the other direction…

Smallville Season 9 is off to a better-than-average start, but before anyone gets a big head over at the CW, let it be known when I mention the very name Smallville, almost universally the response is, “Wow, is that still on?“

The witty primer to this Season 9 ep review can be found here.

Spoilers already revealed the answers to numbers 3 and 4 but it’s still worth a read.

Greg Vaughan (Cliff, Beverly Hills 90210) tweeted that he’s “making his return to the new 90210.” I guess that means he’ll be playing Cliff? Who knows, though, considering 90210 2.0’s inconsistency. Last month, Vaughan was fired from General Hospital.

So apparently AnnaLynne McCord (Naomi, 90210) and Kellan Lutz (George, 90210) are together!

Charles Rosin (executive producer, Beverly Hills 90210) did a blog post about the progress of his current project, showbizzle, and linked back to the interview we did together.

Candy Spelling (wife of Aaron and mother to Tori and Randy of Beverly Hills 90210 fame) will reportedly appear on a reality show being made by Ryan Seacrest.

According to TVGuide.com, Gossip Girl is in danger of cancellation.

In interviews with Entertainment Weekly, Kenny Ortega says he has confidence in Chace Crawford (Nate, Gossip Girl) appearing in the Footloose remake (even though he’s no longer directing it) and co-star Julianne Hough called him a “cutie.”

John Corben (Brian Austin Green) is the newest reporter at the Daily Planet and the first story he wants to break is to expose the Red Blue Blur as a vigilante and not a hero. On the other hand, Lois Lane (Erica Durance) wants to know the person behind the hero. It’s only the second episode of the season and I love how this season is shaping up to be reminiscent of “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” in terms of the dynamic between Lois and Clark. Also we are beginning to see the Lois/Clark/Superman love triangle unfold as Lois’s budding crush on the Red Blue Blur is starting to surface.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

Image via CWTV.com

The episode starts with Lois going to Clark’s house and notices that no one is there but someone is feeding the dog. She says to the dog “Smallville is not the same without Smallville”. John Corben then calls her about a “Blur” story and Lois tells him that he take the story. Afterward he shares with her that he doesn’t believe that the Blur is a hero and Lois scolds him for his cynical views. Corben then looks at a picture of a girl in his wallet, then all of a sudden the picture flies away and when he goes to pick up the picture he gets hit by a bus. Corben goes in and out of consciousness and wakes up as a cyborg better known as Metallo!

Chloe visits Lois at her apartment and she finds that Lois has dog napped Clark’s dog and Chloe asks/jokes that if this is her way of smoking out Clark’s whereabouts or if she misses Clark. Lois shrugs Chloe’s comment(s) and says that she was afraid the dog was left alone so she brought the dog back with her but yet she was intrigued by the fact that the dog was being fed somehow in Clark’s absence. Chloe then covers for Clark and tells Lois that she has been on dog feeding duties. During Chloe’s visit, Lois accidentally lets it slip that she has talked to the Blur again and Chloe sounds surprised. Lois goes on and says that the last time she talked to the Blur she felt that he sounded sad almost if she was the only one he could turn to. Later on Chloe brings Clark’s dog back as Clark enters (in his black trench coat outfit) and she says that he needs to be careful because if she were Lois and saw him in that outfit, that she would be able to piece together that he was the Blur. Also Chloe calls him out on talking to Lois again. She tells him that he needs to commit to his training.

Here is how the rest of the episode pans out:

Corben goes to the hospital and Dr. Hamilton treats him and says that his heart has been removed and that the meteor rock (aka kryptonite) is the only thing keeping him alive. Someone tries to give Corben a sedative and he freaks out and throws them across the room.

At the Luthor mansion, Tess is going all kung fu on a punching bag when Lois drops by. At the end of Season 8, before Lois pops into the future both her and Tess were fighting like if they were in a cage match with no cage. Lois has a theory on her disappearance and shares it with Tess, she thinks that Tess clocked her on the head and somehow hid her away. Tess is surprised to hear that Lois doesn’t remember where she has been for the last few weeks and tells her that once she awoke from the fight – Lois was long gone. Anyway, Lois came to see Tess in order to get her job back at the Daily Planet and threatens Tess that she might use her connections at the Inquisitor (tabloid newspaper) to paint Tess in a not so favorable way.

Clark drops by the hospital and talks to Dr. Hamilton about the “meteor” patient incident. Dr. Hamilton shares that the meteor rock is the only thing keeping him (Corben) alive and that it is poisoning his mind. Clark asks if he had any idea on the identity of the patient and the only clue that Dr. Hamilton had is that the patient dropped his keys which had a Daily Planet key chain on them.

Now we find Corben walking around the city and it seems he is hearing voices or rather replaying people’s words in his mind. He stops and finds the picture he lost before his accident and we find out that this is a picture of his sister Becca who was murdered. He takes the picture to this dark basement and places it on a wall of newspaper clippings about the Blur. He talks to himself and says that his agenda has changed and that he no longer wants to expose the Blur but he wants to kill him instead.

Back at the Planet, Lois is at her computer and she has been officially reinstated and her first story is to cover the hospital incident which was suppose to Corben’s story but he seems to be “missing”. Clark then calls Lois as the Blur and talks about the Daily Planet keys he found (belonging to the hospital patient) and Lois jumps on the chance to do some investigating in order to see who lost their keys. Clark tells her that he doesn’t want her to get hurt and to be careful and wary of such a person and if she hears of someone losing their keys to tell him. They make a “phone” date and he tells her he’ll call “their” phone booth at 7 p.m. While Lois finishes her call she finds that Chloe is on her computer when Chloe has just detected spyware on Lois’s computer.

Tess and a few of her workers have been keeping tabs on Zod and his platoon (as best as they can) and it leads them to a warehouse with a lot Luthor Corp technology. They find plans of a heart powered by kryptonite and they came to the conclusion that Zod and his crew have been performing experiments perhaps in the effort of gaining “powers”.

Back at the Planet, Lois has spent almost the entire day trying to figure out who lost their keys and she finds Corben has reappeared in a disheveled state and makes a comment about his appearance. Corben vaguely asks for some information and Lois mentions that the information he is looking for is in the archives and he needs to use his keys to get into the archive room. Corben then asks to borrow Lois’s keys (::Ding Ding!::). Lois puts the pieces together and she casually lends her keys to Corben and tells him to return them to her in the morning. Lois takes a look at the time and it is almost 7 p.m. and she runs to the “usual” phone booth as Clark calls (as the Blur). Lois tells the Blur that she has figured out that the hospital patient they were looking for is John Corben! All of a sudden Clark hears a struggle over the phone and Lois appears doesn’t seem to be on the line anymore. Clark super speeds to the phone booth and Lois is gone! Oh no!

Clark heads to the watchtower (aka Chloe’s apartment) and seeks Chloe’s help because Lois is missing and shares info about their new kryptonite toting foe. Chloe sort of berates Clark for not coming to her first because Lois does not have experience in the whole hero sidekick thing. Clark then reveals that talking to Lois just “felt right”. Chloe pulls up a home video that was made to Corben which was for his sister Becca telling her that she should be careful living in the big city. Chloe then finds some information that said that Corben’s sister was killed while Corben was overseas and that Corben recently purchased the apartment building where she use to live in. They figure out that he must be keeping Lois in that building. Chloe then asks how Clark is going to get close to Corben since he is going to be weakened by the kryptonite. Clark mentions that he has obtained an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) device from Dr. Hamilton which he hopes that he can use against Corben since he is part machine and that it should power him down.

Image via CWTV.com

Corben questions Lois on the identity of the Blur and she tells him that she doesn’t know who he is. Corben doesn’t believe her because he followed and overheard her talking to the Blur over the phone. Corben gets angry and hits Lois.

Image via CWTV.com

Suddenly Clark super speeds in and Corben shares his issues with him. Corben tells him that he holds the Blur responsible for his sister’s death and further asks what gives him (Clark) the right to meddle in peoples’ lives. Clark is sorry for Corben’s lost, but Corben is still full of rage and goes after Lois because he wants the Blur to feel the same pain of losing someone you care about. Clark then throws the EMP device and it works, Corben is immobilized and falls to the ground.

Clarks goes to check on Lois but all of a sudden Corben is back on his feet again and throws Clark across the room. Clark starts to weaken and turns and finds a piece of lead on the floor. He heats it up with his heat vision and runs at Corben and throws it on his chest which binds to him. Corben figures out that the meteor rock weakens the Blur and he pulls the lead away from his chest which also pulls the kryptonite out of his chest and Corben falls to the ground.

Image via CWTV.com

Clark goes to Lois and he brushes her hair slightly away from her face and tells her that she is safe. Lois wakes up and she sees a figure in the shadow who she deduces as the Blur who has saved her. She asks if she could see his face and Clark takes a step forward but still remains in the shadows and super speeds away.

Back at the watchtower Chloe gets off the phone with Lois and Clark is there and they have a heart to heart chat. They discuss how much they both miss Jimmy and Clark shares that he should’ve been there for Chloe in order to help her through her difficult time. Chloe said she understood and Clark adds that he listens to people from the rooftops in order to fill the void of leaving people behind and that he lost sense on how to live life. Chloe says that maybe Clark shouldn’t stay away from people or Lois and adds “Lois means something to you, something more.” (Aww!)

Chloe suggest that it is time for Kal-El to use his human disguise in order help protect Lois and Chloe shares that she has discovered that Tess put spyware on Lois’s computer in effort to find out where Lois was when she was missing for 3 weeks. Clark realizes that he must come out of hiding and go back to the Daily Planet.

At the Planet, Lois throws Corben’s name plate in the garbage and pulls out Clark’s name plate that she kept in her desk drawer and looks at it longingly. Clark appears in the doorway and sees Lois holding his name plate. He calls out to Lois saying that he will be needing his name plate and Lois turns around and is excited to see Clark and hugs him. (Aww!) Clark says to Lois it seems like that she missed him and in true Lois fashion she puts on her tough face and says that the person (Corben) they got [to replace Clark] was a maniac and begins telling Clark about how she helped the Blur stop Corben. Clark smiles and says that he really wanted to hear the whole story and Lois dives right into it.

At the Luthor mansion Tess’s people found Corben and she asks if he can be revived and they say that his vital signs are offline and he would be more machine than man if brought back. Also she wants them to find Zod and his people. In other news they discovered the day that Zod and his people arrived there were kryptonian symbol(s) ditches (think of the movie “Signs”) that appeared around the world and the translation of the symbols were blood, nobility, and family. Then there is one that is the Superman “S” and when they zoomed in on the picture, there looks to be a person lying in the ditch. (intriguing…)

Next week’s episode is called “Rabid” and now Lois and Clark are back in action. It should be fun and the preview looks like there is going to be some good Clois (Clark + Lois) moments. Check out the episode preview here.

RELEVANT QUESTIONS–DON’T READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

Marriam in Mississauga, Ontario: I was just wondering if there’s hope after all for Body Politic now that The Beautiful Life has been canceled? Body Politic should have been picked up to begin with, it was the smartest prospect for the CW since Veronica Mars.
Sorry, the death of TBL doesn’t mean that Body Politic will be resurrected. Honestly, it’s dead and buried, and you gots to let it go. Sorry, dear. That said, if you love good TV, hold out for the CW’s Life UneXpected, which is coming up soon and is wonderful!

Rene in Washington, D.C.: What’s up with this new guy coming to Gossip Girl?
Damien (Kevin Zegers) is bad news. If you like raccoon-eyed Little J, you’re in luck, because sources tell us Damien’s going to bring Jenny “to a dark place.” Break out the mascara and eyeliner, Jenny.

Mel in Boise, Idaho: I really like Bree and Nate together on Gossip Girl. Please tell me that Joanna Garcia is sticking around for a while?!
Sorry, Bree’s not exactly a paragon of sweetness and light. Her intentions are not as pure as we’ve been led to believe. The redheaded Gossip girl mostly just wants revenge on Carter, and she wants it bad. Better luck next time, Nate.

Sydne in Canada: Loved the Gossip Girl clips for tonight. Can you tell us anything else about the episode?
Feeling a bit Bluck-deprived? We promise you’ll get your “Chair” fix tonight. Just as Jenny thought a new beginning was in store, the reigning queen bee has yet another showdown with predecessor Blair. B just can’t let go of the past, and when Little J begins the school year with a no-more-hierarchy rule, her little lackeys reach out to the reluctant NYU undergrad for an intervention. Of course, it takes the always incredible Chuck Bass to pull B back to reality.

Juliet in Arkansas City, Kans.: Have you got any spoilers on Brooke and Julian from One Tree Hill?
Yes, but it’s not necessarily what you One Tree Hill fans will want to hear: Alex comes between them, and Brooke receives some devastating news.

Kimmy in Seattle: I’ve read that Clay has some big secrets on One Tree Hill. Any idea what they are?
Not entirely, but it sounds like Nathan’s basketball career isn’t the only thing that brought the sports agent to Tree Hill. Superstud Robert Buckley tells us: “He has a lot of mystery in his past, and they did not waste any time introducing that. Episode seven has been my personal favorite so far…I was so completely enthralled and affected by it.” And while we’re not sure what it is, Rob says that people will be filtering in and out of the show to piece together his past life.

Shannon in Encinitas, Calif.: All right, I have to ask. The whole porn thing in last week’s 90210 was too weird. Are they going to elaborate on that?
We’d almost forgotten about Navid’s family business too, but Michael Steger tells us that 90210 is about to delve into the adult film biz: “We’re going to see my parents again. They’re going to talk more about the porn industry, and a lot of dirty details from my Dad’s past are going to surface.” With Navid’s journalistic chops, we’re curious to see if he’s the one who uncovers the dirty deets.

Janet in Palmdale, Calif.: I loved the season premiere of Californication. Any spoilers?
In episode two, “The Land of Rape and Honey,” Hank starts his teaching gig at the university and Chuck Bass takes Professor Moody’s criticism too hard—OK, it’s just Ed Westwick guest starring. In the meantime, someone gets raped, and Becca lashes out, leading to more father-daughter drama than we’ve ever seen on the show.

Credit: E! Online

***
Lots of stuff here!

1. The Body Politic starred Brian Austin Green (David, Beverly Hills 90210). Life UneXpected stars Kerr Smith (Jack, Dawson’s Creek). I remember someone saying they hoped they’d bring Body Politic back but I can’t remember if it was here or elsewhere. I’m curious to see Life UneXpected, though. (Not that I can even find the time to watch another show!)

2. A dark place for Jenny? As I said when this Zegers news was announced, we’ve been there and done that.

3. While Joanna Garcia only has 1 more episode (I believe), the door is open for her to return. I don’t see how this was the “Romeo and Juliet” love story, though, that Garcia and Chace Crawford claimed it would be. Yes, feuding families but is anyone really digging them as a couple?! At this point, I think it’s better that she has another connection to the group and if that’s through Carter, so be it.

4. Why would we feel Bluck deprived? Last week had plenty of Chair in it! And sadly, I didn’t like it then and I didn’t like it tonight.

5. The Alex thing we could’ve guessed last week. As far as Brooke goes, I have a feeling she won’t be able to have kids or something like that.

6. Robert Buckley gave the same vague quote he’s been giving to all the media. But I don’t know how E! doesn’t know the spoilers that we do. This is their JOB!

7. As strange as this might sound, I’m glad we’ll be seeing more of the porn stuff on 90210. I would hate for it be that go-to device every 20 or so episodes just for comedy. Let’s see a real storyline.

8. We already knew about Ed Westwick and Californication.

Last night she showed up at a celebrity bartender event at Sonny McLean’s in Santa Monica to raise money for Team Stacie. (you should click that, her story and the compassion of her friends is amazing) Her sometimes boyfriend Brian Austin Green was scheduled to be there, but Megan showed up as well, and we’re willing to bet she was a very well received surprise.
Because really, who would object to being served anything by Megan Fox? Anyone? Yeah, didn’t think so.

Today is a huge milestone in the world of teen dramas. It is the 19th anniversary of the premiere of Beverly Hills 90210, the show that started it all.

In honor of this momentous occasion, 90210 executive producer Charles Rosin, who now runs showbizzle, revisited the show’s early years and development thereafter.

TeenDramaWhore: What was your reaction when Aaron Spelling contacted you to be part of this show, then-called Class of Beverly Hills?

Charles Rosin: Curiosity. Mr. Spelling was a legend in this business whose deal with ABC had ended and who was struggling to re-invent himself and his company for a new generation of TV watchers. Truthfully, I was not a big fan of his most popular shows –”Dynasty,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “The Love Boat” — which all seemed very old fashioned and predictable. My taste was much more oriented to a more challenging and thought provoking television like “St.Elsewhere,” ” thirtysomething,” and “Northern Exposure,” of which I was the supervising producer for the first season and was working on when I first met “The Mister” in his office at the Warner Hollywood Studios.

TDW: As an executive producer, what exactly was your role? How were you involved in the episode process?

Rosin: In the TV business, a creative executive producer is known as a showrunner, who literally runs all the creative aspects of a show while being responsible for its financial vitality. On 90210 I would either come up with the ideas, or approve ideas brought to me; make sure my partners (The Spelling Company and Fox) approved of these ideas; supervise my staff in writing the story and scripts (or write the stories or scripts myself) based on these ideas; re-write scenes, etc. in my capacity as “the last typewriter” if I felt the material needed punching up; incorporate legal clearances and network notes into the scripts; have a concept meeting with the directors (who I hired); cast the actors for that week’s show; supervise a production meeting with all the department heads (wardrobe, art. etc); be available during production to deal with whatever situations might occur; work with the editors to cut the film which might require dropping scenes, changing the act breaks, changing the order of the story, etc.; then get notes from my partners; then work with my associate producer in getting the locked film ready for airing by adding music, sound effects, correct color, dub voices — and then being the final “ear” when the show is mixed….all while developing three-five scripts simultaneously and prepping for the next episode in line to shoot.

TDW: 90210 essentially started the primetime teen drama genre. What kind of challenges were you up against?

Rosin: Fox was all about edgy/raunchy guy-humor like “Married With Children” while 90210 was a show that not only celebrated girl-empowerment but had this wonderful character named Brenda Walsh [Shannen Doherty] who represented the notion that a teenager could be sexually active and not be a slut, but actually a role model. Unfortunately, my first set of network executives did not see the world as I did . Someday I will write a long article about the censorship that occurred after Brenda lost her virginity at the Spring Dance [ed. note: Episode 1.21, Spring Dance] to her boyfriend (who had been AIDS tested) because she was happy and not full of remorse.

TDW: When do you think 90210 crossed over that ‘initial hump’ and started achieving success?

Rosin: When the Gulf War started in February, 1991 the three networks (ABC, NBC, and CBS) suspended all commercial activity to cover the invasion. Fox didn’t have a news department back than (hard to believe; wish they didn’t have one now. ha!) so Fox broadcast whatever was on their schedule. The 90210 episodes that aired during this time included “BYOB” and “Slumber Party” [ed. note: Episodes 1.11 and 1.13]. By the time commercial activity started up again some three weeks later with the re-activation of the Nielsen ratings, our show was no longer a bottom feeder. The network took notice; gave us an extended order for season two with the understanding that we would be producing summer episodes — and we were off.

TDW: In an interview last year with The New York Times, you said you went to Beverly Hills High. How did it compare to the fictional West Beverly?

Rosin: I graduated Beverly Hills High School in 1970 which makes me a child of the 60’s! Even though it was a time of political activism and emerging youth culture, there were many traditions from the 1950’s that were a vital part of my high school culture — and which ultimately were incorporated into the series. We meet Emily Valentine [Christine Elise, ed. note: see related interview] in season two at “Hello Day” where each class welcomes new students through parodies and funny skits [ed. note: Episode 2.8, Wildfire]. The dance where the cheerleader is date raped by a football player in “Teenline” in season one was called The Pigskin Prom, which was a big thang back in the day [ed. note: Episode 1.9, The Gentle Art of Listening]. And, of course, episodes in the third year season dealing with ditch day and the senior yearbook poll all were part of school life at BHHS [ed. note: Episodes 3.26 and 3.25 respectively, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window and Senior Poll]. Oddly enough, I played baseball for Beverly against Torrance High School, which was our location for “West Beverly” and which later became the high school location for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” [ed. note: click here for photos of Torrance/West Bev] One other odd connection — we filmed our summer episodes at the same beach in Santa Monica Bay where the kids from Beverly Hills High School used to hang out — which was known as Tee’s, not the Beverly Hills Beach Club which was filmed at the old Sand and Sea Club right after it got condemned.

TDW: Let’s talk about the episode where Scott [Douglas Emerson] kills himself (Episode 2.14, The New Fifty Years). Was that a product of Douglas wanting to leave the show or was it precipitated by the direction of the storylines? Was there backlash to that episode?

Rosin: Given our low license fee from the network, we were always trying to cut costs — and Doug Emerson was a nice young man, but not a gifted actor. I still wanted to find a memorable way to write him off the show — and that was when I read about an accidental killing of a high school student on Prom Night in a hotel room at the Disneyland Hotel. So while David Silver [Brian Austin Green] was getting cool and into the Brenda/Kelly/Steve Beach Club crowd, I sent Scott to hang at his grandparents house in Oklahoma off-camera for six episodes as a way to show these two old friends drifting apart before our eyes. It should be known that this was the only story line that the network and Mr. Spelling worked together to try to squash — but they could sense my passion for the story, were very supportive of [our] script and were very satisfied with the episode, which also was highly promotable and did well in the ratings.

TDW: You were there during the high school to college transition, which all the teen dramas are doing these days. What do you think that change added to the show?

Rosin: Not only was I “there” for the transition from high school to college, but I must take credit — along with my late producing partner, Paul Waigner — for spearheading the drive to move on and let these kids grow up. Part of the problem was that our cast looked to old/were too old to play believable high school students anymore — and I convinced network president Sandy Grushow that doing a high school show that did not deal with the prospect of college was bogus. Aaron was nervous about the change, of course. He was nervous about everything. But once I agreed to let all the kids go to the same college, he let them graduate — which allowed me to write a senior year in “real time”. You ask what this added to the show? How ’bout four-five seasons worth of new episodes that would probably wouldn’t have been ordered if they stayed in high school.

TDW: Your wife also worked on the show, right?

Rosin: Karen’s first professional writing credit was for “Isn’t It Romantic?,” the AIDS episode where Brenda and Dylan [Luke Perry] first go out — and where an enraged Dylan slams the flower pot into the pavement before chasing after Brenda [ed. note: Episode 1.10]. Although Karen was never offered a staff position, chances are she wrote, or co-wrote your favorite episodes, including all the ones set in Paris [ed. note: Episodes 3.3-3.5], the condom in school episode [Episode 2.21, Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout It ], the one where Scott accidentally shoots himself, the one where Dylan meets his inner-child [Episode 3.22, The Child Is Father To The Man], the Christmas episode with the angels answer Donna’s [Tori Spelling] prayers by preventing a school bus from crashing bus [Episode 3.16, It's A Totally Happening Life], and the graduation episode [Episode 3.29, Commencement], which we wrote together. You can hear our commentary for “Commencement” on the third season DVD. Karen, a former actress and playwright, has a great ear for dialogue. My strength as a writer was (and is) always story and story structure — so we were great collaborators. If Mr. Spelling and I had anything in common it was our love and appreciation of nepotism.

TDW: Your daughter is just a bit older than me. Did she watch the show growing up? What does she think knowing her parents played a big role in one of the biggest shows of the 90s?

Rosin: My eldest daughter Lindsey was five when I started working on the 90210. She’s the cutie-pie who asks Brandon to dance the hookelau at the end of summer luau at the Beverly Hills Beach Club [ed. note: Episode 2.6, Pass/Not Pass]. Growing up she never bragged about my job, in fact, didn’t tell her teen-aged camp counselors about me until the last day of the session. Lindsey knew at a young age she wanted to be a director, and is currently developing an hour pilot with CBS Paramount — in addition to be the creative force behind showbizzle.

TDW: You have said you left the show because it was “killing” you. Can you elaborate on that?

Rosin: For the first two seasons, Beverly Hills 90210 had the lowest license fee in broadcast television — meaning that Fox paid the Spelling Company less money to make our show than any other show in prime time. One of the ways we cut costs was to assemble a small writing staff composed of mostly new writers, but once our production orders increased to anywhere from 28- 32 hours a year (a standard network order for a hit show is anywhere from 13-22 episodes a year; a cable show much less than that) the lack of a big staff took its toll and I found myself working 12-16 hours a day, 6 1/2 days a week, 11 1/2 months a year. Six weeks after I mixed my last episode, “P.S. I Love You” [ed note: Episode 5.32], one of my arteries shut down. I was 43 years old. We caught it early. I dodged a bullet. And 15 years later, I catch waves and feel great.

TDW: Did you keep up with the show after you left?

Rosin: I was a non-exclusive script consultant for the 6th season where I read outlines and offered my suggestions — most of which weren’t followed. I do remember watching one episode that year where NFL star quarterback Steve Young was a guest star [ed. note: Episode 6.12, Breast Side Up] because it was written by Larry Mollin and directed by Dave Semel, who both remain good friends today. I did not watch after that — and felt that show lost much of its cultural currency and degenerated into a more pedestrian and predictable soap opera– the kind of show more aligned with the traditional Spelling aesthetic.

TDW: Your last season–the fifth–was also Carol Potter’s last. Did you agree with the decision to get rid of Jim [James Eckhouse] and Cindy? (Ed. note: see my related interview here.)

Rosin: Reluctantly, yes. Creatively, the show no longer evolved around the Walsh House — and although we certainly could have come up with new storylines that included the parents in a supporting capacity, both Carol Potter and Jim Eckhouse were taking home a fairly big pay check — and by writing them off the show, those monies could be applied to other things — like paying Jason Priestley [Brandon] and Jennie Garth [Kelly] to stick around.

TDW: I have to ask: Brenda and Dylan or Kelly and Dylan?

Rosin: Brenda was our favorite character to write; the scene where Dylan and Kelly hook up the night Jack McKay was released at the pool at the Bel Age in season three [ed. note: Episode 3.19, Back in the High Life Again] was perhaps the hottest scene we ever shot — in other words, it’s a draw…

TDW: Kelly and Dylan or Kelly and Brandon?

Rosin: I’ll always be partial to Kelly and Steve.

TDW: What was your reaction when you found out the season 10 storyline (Episodes 10.18-10.20) that Jack McKay (Josh Taylor) was alive?

Rosin: Well, I first found out about Jack McKay when I opened your e-mail. (Like I said, I didn’t watch the show once I left). But we purposely filmed the sequence in such a way as to leave this “return from the dead” storyline available. I guess they had to wait until Luke Perry returned to the series to revive this plot.

TDW: What was your reaction when you found out David and Donna were marrying in the series finale?

Rosin: It seemed about right; Karen and I and our three kids visited the set at the Beverly Hilton the day they were filming the wedding — and it was the first time I visited since I left the show five years earlier.

TDW: Do you have a favorite storyline?

Rosin: Lots of them — my favorite episode was Commencement because with all the clips that were incorporated into the two hour episode, it felt like a retrospective of the high school years.

TDW: Do you have a favorite memory from working with the cast? A favorite guest star? (There were a lot of them!)

Rosin: I loved watching Jason directing the episode “The Time Has Come Today” from the 4th Season [ed. note: Episode 4.25] where Brenda discovers a diary from the 1960’s in her bedroom. My favorite guest star would be my wife Karen, who played a lesbian in the episode “Girls On The Side,” [Episode 5.28] which she also wrote. Also Marcy Kaplan, who played TV star Lydia Leeds in the episode in which Brenda worked at the Peach Pit and became Laverne [Episode 1.16, Fame is where You Find It]. Karen and I wrote that one together.

TDW: What surprised you most while working on the show?

Rosin: Like most writers I have an active imagination — and there have been times that I thought that the script I had just written would catapult me onto a podium for an awards ceremony. But I never could have imagined being a creative force behind an international television sensation! Or that you would be asking me these questions almost 20 years from the time that I started work on the show…

TDW: Do you have any regrets or anything you would do differently?

Rosin: Biggest regret is that I didn’t establish a relationship with media executive (and visionary) Barry Diller when he was running Fox. As far as doing things differently, I would have tried to take better care of my health, and maintain a sense of humor when dealing with the network instead of getting caught up in a war zone.

TDW: Looking back on the show today, what do you think is its place in television history?

Rosin: A footnote.

TDW: Are you still in touch with any of the cast?

Rosin: Yes — Jason Priestley is a buddy. James Eckhouse too. And Ian Ziering [Steve] is a great guy with whom I recently chatted about his early years in the business which we posted on Inside The Bizzle at showbizzle. Check it out. It is a must see for 90210 fans. [Ed. note: I linked to one of the Ian interviews here but there are many more here, including ones with BH90210 producer-writer John Eisendrath]

TDW: Have you watched the new 90210? Do you have any thoughts on it?

Rosin: I watched it once. It’s a good looking cast. But to do a show called 90210 and not allow your young characters to have any socio-political context in the age of Obama speaks to the cynicism and cowardice of commercial broadcasting.

TDW: You also worked on Dawson’s Creek a bit. How did your role differ there?

Rosin: I was more involved with the business side of producing than the writing of scripts — though I certainly had a hand in the creative development of the first episodes.

TDW: How do you think the shows themselves differ?

Rosin: I leave that for your community of readers to comment.

TDW: You’re now working on a site called showbizzle. What is it, and how did it come about?

Rosin: showbizzle is a digital showcase and destination website I created with daughter Lindsey (the Hookelau girl) for emerging talent away from the immediate pressures of the market place. We created a cool show featuring 29 young actors performing 141 two-minute scripted monologues about what they are doing to jump start their careers in Hollywood as told to Janey, a fictitious blogger who hangs out at an LA coffee house. Our goal here to create a vibrant community of young actors, writers, comedians, and performers around our showbizzle content where members are encouraged to upload their original videos with the chance to be paid $$ to perform on our digital showcase. So check showbizzle.com, become a member, work with us, tell your friends — and see why Cynopsis Digital said that it “should be required viewing for kids thinking of moving out to LA LA land to chase their dreams of stardom as it delves into the frustrations of being on the outside looking in.”

TDW: Anything else you want to add?

Rosin: Hard to believe the show’s 20th anniversary is coming up . To get to know what the early days were like check out Rolling Stone Magazine’s article “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (issue 624) originally published February 20th, 1992.

For more on showbizzle, check out the original press release and, of course, head over to the site.

Look at that. Two episodes in and I didn’t have any trouble following anything that was going on. I understand who all the major characters are right now, and even what their relationships are to one another. It helps that Lois Lane is completely recognizable in her nosy, busybody way.

I also have a better understanding of what Clark is trying to accomplish with his continually-failing attempts to abandon his humanity so he can embrace his destiny. After all, when he fails as a superhero, people like Jimmy Olsen die. Right?

I’m still not sure why all most of the super-villains always die in superhero movies and shows. Metallo is a major Superman villain in the comics, and one that comes back a lot. So he was he so easily dispatched of here.

I guess it’s possible that Brian Austin Green could come back, but after he ripped his own Kryptonian heart out, methinks he’s dead. I don’t even think there’s anything Clark can do about it, considering it’s Krytponite and his regular heart is gone.

It does make me curious about the depowered Zod. The whole Metallo thing was a scheme of his to try and kick-start his and the other Kryptonian’s powers? Okay. But where’s the other Kryptonian? The one from the future? And when do we figure out what happened to Lois?

I was happy to see Clark return to the Daily Planet by episode’s end. He needs to be able to embrace both his human and Kryptonian sides to become the super man we know he’ll someday be. This red-blue blur thing. That’s just a faze.

So Clark is back with Lois, if only to protect her from Tess. But we know there’s more to it than that. There’s that classic love triangle to start playing up between Clark, Lois and Superman. How can he compete? *sigh*
