We hate Generation Bubble, and we hate the post Detroit Nosh City

1. WE HATE that you’re us, only smarter. It’s a classic example of kids from the northeast and kids from the midwest. We’d like it a lot if we could start a Dandy Warhols/Brian Jonestown Massacre-style rivalry (but only if we get to be BJM). We have WAY more Facebook fans than you. Take that.

2. WE HATE that your blog reads like 1. A desperate job application for NPR newswriter; or 2. A distillation of various aspects of your Master’s thesis. You even have an annotated bibliography, for cryin’ out loud. “Yeah, we read Baudrillard and Walter Benjamin for fun!” Pshaw, we say, GenBub. P. Shaw. Besides, everyone knows that the only Benjamin worth reading is “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.” (By the way, your citations are neither APA, nor MLA. Lame.)

It's one of those weird-ass bubbles from The Prisoner! Look out Number Six! Aaaaaiiiiiiiiiii!

3. WE HATE the sorry, lazy tactic of posting a rerun blog from those halcyon days of GenBub yore (April), rather than posting actual content on Thanksgiving. Tracking back to an early post that you might have liked, but didn’t get much run because your only readers were yourselves (we have no idea what that is like…), is just pathetic. We would never do that. In fact, on Thanksgiving we sucked it up, ran off to our room, (leaving behind the four soused, belligerent cousins and the grandmother who never understands that “intellectuals” like us don’t “work” for corporations) to shoot off.

Oh. What?

To shoot off a sterling hatepost about vegans (which we assume your ultra-liberal, east-coast biased asses are. We ate meat. In fact, we road-killed a turkey, threw it in the back of the Jeep, plucked it ourselves, and cooked it up. That turkey would have busted your Prius in half).

4. WE HATE your patronizing treatment of Coon Man. “Armed with a .22 rifle and some faithful hounds, he reaps the Motor City’s brownfield bounty.” Yeah, that’s how he would’ve said it. Way to denigrate a man just trying to get by in the world.

"What, don't I look like the sort who 'reaps Motor City's brownfield bounty'?"

5. WE HATE your pretension. You start off your post by saying “April is the cruelest month…for varmints.” Kakow! Throw in a slammer sometimes, just for fun. Okay, so an obvious Eliot reference in an article about Detroit might not be that pretentious. Let’s read on. “Apparently unfazed by this unfortunate sobriquet, “Coon Man” Beasley observes a credo as simple as his diet.” What’s unfortunate about his sobriquet? He hunts, traps, and sells raccoons. His sobriquet makes perfect sense to us. Only here in Real America, we just call it his nickname. Maybe it’s just this “Anton” character who is pretentious. We have other authors, too, and they are plenty pretentious sometimes. Let’s check out the next post. Good, good. Uh oh. “[...]like the kind of appurtenances they had in Borders before its governing powers discovered they’d inadvertently made their stores into flophouses and therefore decided to snatch them away.” We understand “flophouse” (where we grew up), and “snatch” (um…). But not much else. Write for America, GenBub. Not East America.

Arguably there are a great many songs that are suitable for this purpose. Any self-respecting music

Arguably there are a great many songs that are suitable for this purpose. Any self-respecting music lover knows there is nothing better for setting any kind of atmosphere than an appropriate soundtrack. People buy creepy music for Halloween parties, hip hop music for dance parties- the same principle holds true, maybe even truer, of creating an atmosphere for…generating some positive energy, so to speak. This may be because music and love are two sides of the same coin; it’s only natural that they go together, like red wine and chocolate. If you really think about your physical composition, you will realize that you are created with a measure of music in place- your heartbeat. The very essence of your existence is rhythm. Undeniably, these lovely cadences are an integral force in many aspects of human life.

Of course we are all involved in our subjective realities- you may not want to make anything but cookies when you hear this song. However, I dare say if you just sit back and give it a listen you will understand its sensual appeal.

Let’s do it (no pun intended)- the song in question is called “Miss June ‘75,” created by the masterful and mysterious Brian Jonestown Massacre.

BJM started out in a similar vein as The Velvet Underground, kind of a shoegazer style of music, but with the album “Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request”- an homage to the Rolling Stones’ 1967 album- their songstylings begin to move into a more psychedelic, 60’s style rock and roll that continues to grow on later albums. This particular album was recorded at Bloody Angle Studios in 1995, and came out in 1996. Although lead singer Anton Newcombe wrote and sang almost every other track on the album, “Miss June ‘75″ was written and performed by guitarist Matt Hollywood.

Interestingly, Hollywood is also responsible for my other favorite track off this album, “No Come Down,” which I urge you to look into if you can dig it. But that’s neither here nor there at the moment.

So what makes this song a journey to erotica? Well, lets start with the obvious: the lyrics. If I were you, I would check them out- (what I wouldn’t do if I were you is Google image Miss June ‘75- oops!)
pull the trigger: Miss June ‘75 Lyrics.

Isn’t it enough to make your eyeballs blush? Yet the eroticism of what he sings is part of what I find so unabashedly romantic about this song; I’ll grant you, those lyrics could be interpreted as a little explicit and naughty. But Hollywood sings them with such exaltation that it is clearly a love song, and not just a physical love song. It seems as though the purpose of the song is to entice as much as it is to communicate his admiration of her.

However, as I said, the lyrics are only the most obvious component of this song that makes it oh so sexy. The fact is, there are many layers to it- and of course, we can’t discount rhythm. There are several instruments composing the rhythm structure of this song. The immediately obvious is the tambourine. I postulate that tambourines have a magical appeal to some teenage paradigm of romance and high school dances, and it’s not without reason. It’s tremulous, it’s uncertain. It jangles like your nerves during your first kiss. Above all, it is rhythmic.

Then of course you have the guitars. The bass keeps a very subtle line that is hard to even discern above the complimentary rhythm guitar. The strumming holds the song together, providing more bones for the percussion as Newcombe slams the pick down on the metal of the strings, giving it some extra thump. The lead guitar in the solos, and to a lesser degree throughout, really throw some magic into the arrangement. The arpeggios feel listless, almost full of tension and longing at the same time that they convey a sense of wonder at some unknown satisfaction.

Above all, this song is structured such that it matches the pace of the well executed seduction of a very adored object of affection. Consider the movements- it starts out very slowly, the lyrics sweet and admiring. After the first guitar solo, which heightens the emotional intensity significantly, the lyrics and vocal melody change. He sings faster, insistently; his affection is lavished more generously. The rhythm guitar picks up as well, and as the harmony transitions into the second solo, the sound depicts a buildup of tension which quiets down only for Hollywood to whisper: “oh girl,” before launching into the sexiest tirade of rhymes I have ever heard in my life.

Of course the last part of the song is blatantly erotic, but it’s not only because of what he says- it’s how he says it that give the last verse weight and nuance. His sentences are breathless and run all together into one streaming visual montage of her. The rhymes are much less conventional than in the rest of the song, situated in the middle of sentences. The enjambment creates a flow that gives the song a life and movement that really can’t be described in any way other than climactic.

Don’t take my word for it; just press play and ask your sweetheart for a slow dance. If you listen closely enough I bet you’ll find that tambourine matches up with your heartbeat. just. so.

The title of the post today is from a track brought to you by Generation X in the late 70’s on their self-titled album. I decided to play some old punk early in the show and peppered later on due to an exhibit I just saw at the MoMA called “Looking at Music: Side 2″. Here’s an article about it if you want to check it out: Bob Gruen’s Journey to MoMA.

Check out this trailer for the upcoming movie documenting Lil Wayne.

They caught him drinking cough syrup!

I think making a documentary on music (ROCKUMENTARY) is a difficult and personal thing IF the desired effect is to be timeless and revealing (much like making a great song).

The question is, how personal do you wanna go? Do you want people to know EVERYTHING, and then risk having more h8ers, than fans?

Remember Metallic’s Some Kind of Monster?

To me, it exposed the fact that Metalllica have endured some major trials over the course of their lengendary career. It also revealed that Dave Mustaine is really emotional, Lars has a Dad that looks like Gandalf, and that James can’t really sing without some major pro-tools pitch correction.

Still love you Metallica.

Out of all of the ROCKUMENTARIES, my personal favorite is DIG.

Dig is dope because it was shot over a 7 year period and documented rival bands The Dandy Warhols, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

It was stunning to witness such a talented dude (BJM singer Anton Newcombe) literally destroy every opportunity that was given to him. Bonus points when he fights his band at a showcase!

Anyway, the reason I was pondering all of this is because we here at SEX-ED have MOUNTAINS of footage we are readying for release. Altho it documents some pretty crazy shit that has happened during the past couple years, I sometimes think I should throw Farshad through a window or something just to give it that extra edge.

Or maybe I’ll light Anthony’s pro-tools gear on fire…..during a showcase……

Wouldn’t it be perfect for our ROCKUMENTARY?

From Tuesday, October 20. Last night in Long Beach was the most incredible musical performance I can

From Tuesday, October 20.

Last night in Long Beach was the most incredible musical performance I can remember seeing in some time, and it took place in my home town! Really made me reconsider the idea of moving away.

Here’s the skinny: I got an invite from the banjo player from my old band, Vast Atlantic, to come see his band , The John Meeks Band perform at the Prospector (a local dive and the first bar I ever went to at the tender age of 16). A late addition to the bill was Sam Outlaw, featuring our former pedal steel player Bret Hendry. An evening of great country music was to be expected, and it was a reunion of sorts between three out of the five members of Vast Atlantic.

And then there were three...

And quite a night it was: A blustery wind from the NW set in around the early evening, sweeping a spell of magic upon the night, not to mention chapped lips. I arrived early, (yes I know this is surprising) and milled about with friends before the show. After watching Jake and Jess in a heated match of “Erotic Photo Hunt”, I learned some interesting tidbits of information scattered about through several conversations.

First, I learned from Jonah that he is dating a girl who actually listens to our old band. I don’t know why I find this strange; we put in hours of work, meticulously crafting every piece of music. It just seemed to me that a.) no one really knew who we were, and b.) the band sounded unhealthy to me. Now, stepping back, I realize that both are not true. This girl and her friend were at the sold out Troubadour show that we played with Rocky Votolato (her friend remembers being hit on by the bass player). There were a ton of people at that show; I don’t know where they came from or where they went afterwards, but they are still out there listening to us! Just shows you that today’s youth don’t need a record label imprint to legitimize a band. Ah, DIY.

Next, Bret informed me that the OC Weekly ran a piece about our breakup recently. They are a bit late on this, as we were done by June of this year. But I just find it interesting that they thought so highly of us. I know we were in the magazine several times in the past, but they were small features. I never would have expected “They’ve been our favorites for a while”. Where were these magazine reporters and their lackey’s? Why did it seem that we had no one at most of our shows?

It is a hard realization that critical acclaim does not equal popular success. It helps, but it is just part of the puzzle. Our lack of good management and our confusion over where to find our fan base really held us back. For a similar story, check out “A Good Band is Easy to Kill”, a dvd about the late band Beulah. (Warning: For educational purposes only on what not to do in a band. Boring as hell.) Better yet, check out “Dig”, the film documenting the rise and demise of “The Brian Jones Town Massacre”. It will give you a good feel for the hatred and animosity that the close quarters of a struggling band can engender (as the ex members of Vast Atlantic all know only too well). Similar stories, but they beat their heads against the wall a bit longer. When you play shows to no one after playing to a crowd, it is quite easy to become demoralized and throw in the towel. What we needed (besides group therapy) was a tool to help us locate the loyal fans like the two girls at our Troub show who still listen and bring them out to more performances.

From Monday, November 9

If only we had had Band Metrics, which I discovered through a timely episode of NPR’s “On the Media” the following Sunday.

http://www.onthemedia.org/episodes/2009/10

Band Metrics <bandmetrics.com> is a computer program by Duncan Freeman in beta that is to be fully launched next year. Using a complex system I’m sure I will never understand, it analyzes shows, radio play, word of mouth buzz, and language analysis of faceebook, twitter, myspace etc. What you get is a plotted map of where you should tour to hit your superfans, those who will bring people and money to your shows. Thank you technology.

Enough wool gathering. The show at the Prospector turned out fantastic and ended in a raucous drunken jam featuring members of The Fling, Sam Outlaw, and Cold War Kids. Sweetheart of the Rodeo was played almost in its entirety, and I left a happy audience member. It’s been said by other vagabonds to me, but the more I travel, the more I realize we have something special in Long Beach. If I could only turn the average temperature down 20 degrees and clean up the ocean, I would feel at home. More to come.

Anton A. Newcombe’s The Brian Jonestown Massacre are known both for being prolific and, at lea

Anton A. Newcombe’s The Brian Jonestown Massacre are known both for being prolific and, at least to me, for releasing new material with very little build-up or fan-fare, like a nice little surprise every time I check their section in HMV.

The group’s latest EP, Smoking Acid and is a collaboration between singer and multi-instrumentalist (emphasis on “mentalist”) Newcombe, and Icelandic artist, Jón Sæmundur Auðarson. This bunch of songs have sonic similarities to previous album My Bloody Underground, albeit with slightly less provocative song titles.

Bring Me The Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mill’s Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs on the White House) from My Bloody Underground

See?

Anyway, the first two tracks on this new EP – “The Serious Matter” and “í Alvöru Talaõ” – recall the discordant noise-rock of My Bloody Underground, although the songs similarly never quite reach the dreamy, almost-ambient My Bloody Valentine-shoegaze sound or the fuzzy-rock-with- pop-sensebilities of The Jesus & Mary Chain or The Velvet Underground, that undoubtedly influenced both the last album and these songs. Instead, the songs drone on and on, backed by repetitive drumbeats that re more monosyllabic than motorik, and with distant, echoy vocals buried in the mix it all makes for something a bit…well, boring.

The Serious Matter

Then it gets a bit weird and different with following tracks “Tempo 116.7 (Reaching for Dangerous Levels of Sobriety)” and “Tempo 116.7 (Clean Acid / Dirty Beats)”, which start with world-music-like (I’m sorry, I’m a philistine) percussion, before dropping in break-beats and distant, chanting vocals which sound almost like System 7 or Orbital in their heyday. Unfortunartley, like most dance music, these songs do drag on and get a tiny bit repetitive.

It’s final song “Super Fucked” which marries the two wholly different sounds of the album in an almost trip-hop Jesus & Mary Chain sound. Again, unfortunatley this isn’t quite as exciting as it sounds.

Overall, Smoking Acid just seems like an addendum to My Bloody Underground; both were somewhat-arty experiments in noise-rock, like a more lo-fi version of Sonic Youth’s SYR series of recordings. However, what is an interesting experience for the band isn’t quite such a joy for the listener, as it often times results in ongoing, sprawling (not in a good way), formless jams of repetitive noise, not unlike what the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s live shows have, regrettably, devolved into.

Hopefully soon, Anton and his crew will return to the much more enjoyable, Stones-esque jangly guitar pop of yore.

Rated NC-17. Enjoy a timeless Dilettante tune, whilst you get sorted. “The Whole World” was composed by the global subterranean tambourine hero, Joel Gion.

Music and art can change our World for the good. You already know how chaotic it is these days if yo

Music and art can change our World for the good. You already know how chaotic it is these days if you are awake: Swine Flu hype, G20 Riots, Vaccinations, Nuclear Standoffs, RFID chips, health care arguments, economy, Iraq War, terrorism, the New World Order, 1st amendment violations, unemployment, and the list can go on and on.

Now if we all rise up together we can push the oppressive things out of the way. I have compiled a Jamendo only playlist of artists I really like because of their honesty and musical quality. Please download at the link below and pass around. We can do this. It isn’t over and as long as we are breathing we can do something.

And here is another idea: If you can play guitar or piano, sing or write, get going and make a song about whatever you are going through. No matter what. Flood the internet with your viewpoint. Let’s not give in to the elite bullies in charge who want to manipulate, con and destroy us with their fear-mongering. These are all distractions.

if you paint or draw do that, too. Flood the internet with your world. We have more numbers behind us than those elite. They hide behind their power and wealth. Come and get going.

Make youtube videos, too and post. Do it!

Here’s where you can play or download the playlist for free:

As you’re perhaps already aware, the LES spot Annex is closing and turning into a sports bar.

As you’re perhaps already aware, the LES spot Annex is closing and turning into a sports bar. Whatever though, that kind of thing happens. The last RUFF CLUB ever is tonight. If you haven’t been to Ruff Club on a Friday, I suggest you head out tonight, because.. well.. it’s your last chance. Make it happen.

Because I seem to post about Jonestown just about every other month, it only makes sense that for this specific Friday I leave you with these two tracks from Space Girl & Other Favorites. Quick fact: The original release was vinyl only, with a limited run of only 500 copies. They re-released the album in 2003 with some bonus tracks.. wish I could get ahold of that vinyl though.
