A lot of people are going to get cameras this holiday season, or have them from the last few seasons

A lot of people are going to get cameras this holiday season, or have them from the last few seasons. They have a basic SLR and the kit lens. There’s a lot you can do with these simple combinations, but they’re limiting as well. I’ve been involved in a few discussion forums for these mid-level beginners and wanted to echo a post here about an individual who was looking to upgrade, primarily interested in wedding photography, but wanted advice on path forward.

“Agree with others, 18-55 kit *can* take a sharp photo, but it’ll be a challenge if you’re handheld, in low light, and don’t have a high-contrast subject that’s moving. The variable aperture also makes using Manual difficult, try Shutter Priority (Tv) or Aperture Priority (Av) first to get comfortable with working your exposure. If using a flash head, try fooling with bounce flash and Program mode (P). If you have an older Rebel without a thumb wheel, then you won’t really be able to use Manual for anything beyond posed shots, because you’ll only have one of three exposure parameters (shutter, aperture, sensitivity) assigned to the index wheel. Oh, thoroughly read the manual for your camera as you explore each setup. Some people are able to know just the basics and get great stuff, some people need to really dig and understand the nuance. Find out which you are and how much effort you’re willing to put into your craft before laying out cash. Regarding upgrades, I’d stick with the Rebel and first invest in glass. That 50 1.8 is a good choice, you can even get them used for $75 or lower, although they are a bit long on a 1.6x Rebel, almost 85mm. It’ll take some getting used to, which isn’t a bad thing. The 50 1.4 is an even better choice if you can drop a few hundred. Zooms, I’d say go for the 17-55 2.8 IS.. it doesn’t say L (no weather sealing, etc) but it’s L-quality glass. Every bit as good as the 16-35, 24-70 or 24-105 for under $1000. And if you don’t have one, get yourself a 580ex or 580exII flash head and rechargeable batteries (I like Ansmann 2700mAh AAs, they’re a bit pricey but pay for themselves over time) or an external battery pack. Learn to use bounce and fill-in flash and your photos will improve dramatically. More light means smaller aperture and faster shutter, which means more sharpness. More light also means greater saturation. I’m of the philosophy that photography isn’t cheap. Yes you can get by, and yes in the end, it’s the photographer not the camera. You can get some amazing photos with a $250 point-n-shoot, I know… but the proper kit makes it possible to get 500 amazing photos in a night as opposed to just 10 or 20. That’s once you’re ready to “go live,” you can learn everything you need to learn on the Rebel with one decent (fixed aperture) zoom, a prime or two, and a flash head. Best of luck and let’s see some of your photos as you progress!”

The weekend prior to Thanksgiving, the bride and I returned to the scene of the crime. The crime being the totally fractured left ankle she sustained whilst running through the woods during an orientation meet. We took JR the bus back to Tyler State Park.

The fracture was nasty, requiring plates, pins and screws in three places. The recovery was just as challenging, requiring almost ten weeks of immobility. I can only imagine the physical pain that she must have endured from the moment of the break onward. But the real challenge has to have been the mental one. If I put myself in her place, those weeks of confinement had to have long moments of doubt of ever resuming the walking, hiking, and biking that she loves. We have planned our whole life after work and kids around the concept of touring the country, hiking the wilderness areas and biking every state.

The possibility of physically not being able to do that would have crushed me. The largest crane in the world could not have pulled me out of that depression. Somehow, my bride managed her way through that morass. It had it’s moments, but she kept her strength.

I watched as she has worked extremely hard at rehab, and regaining fitness. Watched as the daily walk went from living room to bathroom, living room to front door, front door to mail box, front door to end of street, front door to around the block, and then 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles, 4 miles, and now 5 miles. The true remaing test was to hike the uneven terrain of trails.

There had to be much trepidation on my bride’s part to return to the trails where the accident occured. There had to be much trepidation on not being able to handle the terrain. I am happy to say that the hiking went well. And in the most perverse way, I was happy that she even fell a couple of times. Huh? Yep, I would never have wished that on her, but her response after the fall tells it all. Her first words “It’s not broken”

And my feelings? It’s not broken. My hat’s off to you baby. Your personal mettle, and the medal the good doctor gave you held. And that’s a good thing.

I think we’ll start planning our trip to Yosimite.

I treaded down the garden path, steps unsure, yet tingling with anticipation. My senses delighted in the fragrant flowers and shrubs lining the path on both sides, a colourful assortment of lively lilies, soft violets, vibrant daisies and others whose names I did not know, in full bloom at the feet of flowering trees. I’d never been here before but my feet knew the path as if it was written on my heart in ink.

My heart was beating an ecstatic rhythm; I could barely contain my excitement.

I was going to meet him. My beloved.

Stepping through the opening of a large stone gate half-covered in ivy, I could see the trees part to reveal a grassy clearing. My eyes yearned to see him, to finally be in the presence of the one I’ve heard so much about. I felt like I knew him already, hearing glowing tales of his goodness, strength, and passion in storybooks and history books alike. I had often repeated his name in my heart like a mantra, whispered his name in secret, dripping like a sweet wine from my lips.

I was going to appear before him, uncover the mystery I had for years been yearning to discover for myself.

Though I did yet not see him in the clearing, I could feel him in the soft swell of wind, I could hear his song in the faint melody of an orchestra playing somewhere unseen. The chords of music were ones I had heard in my sweetest dreams, the low rich tones of cellos and the birdlike ethereal quality of a dozen singing violins. I scarcely knew how to proceed, seeing in the clearing before me a banquet table draped with plush purple fabrics — my favourite colour — and tastefully decorated with gleaming glasses containing freshly-cut white daisies — my favourite flower. Two places were set with crystal bowls containing miniature cupcakes and chilled green tea ice cream and tall wineglasses brimming with sparkling white wine. Above my head, a banner of twinkling fairy lights adorned the trees and my heart fluttered as bold monarch butterflies danced in the thicket.

My excitement grew and grew. He knew me. He knew my simple tastes down to the tiniest detail. I was anxious to see him, to see the face of the one that was already romancing my soul, hidden from view.

My eyes were drawn to the table where I saw my name written on a card. Eagerly, I opened it and read the following instructions:

My love, I will appear soon. Open the door and prepare yourself.

Before I could puzzle over the meaning of the simple message, I saw a door painted blue standing solitary among the trees. Curious, I opened it. What would be there, I wondered, that would help me prepare myself? How would I dress for his arrival? How would I look to this one rumoured of possessing a heartbreaking, breathtaking beauty? I immediately felt unprepared for this encounter. My imagination spun gossamer webs of flowing silk gowns, opal veils and delicate strings of pearls. Of course, I thought, heart thumping wildly. I would have to look perfect. I would have to capture his love at first glance.

When I opened the door and stepped inside, it was not the tulle and chiffon bridal shop I had envisioned. What I saw was a full-length mirror instead. Inhaling deeply, I was consumed by the familiar sense of dread as I stood to face my reflection. I could have cried. I was about to meet the embodiment of perfection, the one of my dreams, and I could not have looked any more unworthy. It just would not do. The harsh reminder of my physical flaws, so exaggerated and beastly in my eyes, and ordinary, ill-fitting street clothes was distressing in this anticipated meeting, which was thus far unfolding like a fairy tale. In a moment of petulant anger, I kicked the mirror — hard — and shards of shattered glass sprinkled down to the grass.

I waited. I couldn’t feel his closeness, could feel nothing but my anger with myself and my unsatisfactory appearance. The door behind me was locked and there was no way of getting back to the clearing, the beauty of which I didn’t feel I deserved. I felt unlovely and unlovable, disappointed that it had all ended this way. I was supposed to be a princess, clothed in splendour, resplendent, waiting to unite with my beloved. He would not have me now, this man of infinite beauty. I was ugly, soiled, unworthy … as broken as the chips of glass scattered at my feet. Tears fell unguarded.

It was in that state that he came to me in the smallest of whispers.

Beautiful, he said.

“No!” I cried. ”You’ve made a mistake. I’m not beautiful and you cannot see me like this. This is not how it’s supposed to be. It was supposed to be perfect … everything was perfect until you instructed me to open the door and prepare myself. This isn’t right. You cannot love this.”

I do, he said, the holiest of vows. I love you.

“You can’t!” I argued. ”I’m not perfect, I’m not beautiful, and I’m not ready to meet you this way.”

But I want you this way.

“Why?” I asked, incredulous. ”It’s just … it’s just … not … good.”

I say that it is good, he said.

I flung a handful of glittering stars onto the tapestry of the night sky and said it was good.

I carved the highest mountains and lowest valleys with my hands and said it was good.

I hung the fiery sun and glowing moon into the balance of the universe and said it was good.

I breathed and the wind blew, I wept and the oceans surged from my eyes and said it was good.

I painted sunsets from burnished gold and opaline pinks with loving brushstrokes and said it was good.

I promised you a ribbon of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple after violent storms and said it was good.

I made for you this secret garden, a place for you and me alone from the intricate architecture of your heart’s desires.

I thought of you long before all of this. I wrote your name in my book, sketched your portrait, plotted out your life journey from conception to death. With the same love and creative passion I gave to the sky, sun, moon, stars, sunsets, rainbows, oceans, and secret gardens, I created you.

And it is good.

It is beautiful.

I wanted to believe this, for the voice was slowly unraveling the barriers surrounding my heart.

You may not believe me, he said, but that’s okay. You may feel ugly and unlovable and flawed and imperfect, but that doesn’t change what is true. I will never change, waver, or grow tired of your unbelief. I will never stop loving you and calling you what you are, which is beautiful because you are mine. My love is stronger than your deepest protestations, your greatest hurts, and the most convincing lies. It is stronger than your most intelligent arguments, your darkest feelings, and your tainted ideals of beauty and perfection.

I, who created and am the very embodiment of beauty, say you are Beautiful.

With these words, I was transported back to the clearing where he stood with his hand out, waiting patiently. No words in any human language could convey the beauty I saw standing there before me. If I could describe to you what I saw when I looked in his eyes, I would. But I can’t.

…

Still he waits, arms open.

Loving.

Beautiful.

I just received my school mark from Emily Carr this week of my painting portrait; if you were following along I haven’t been painting almost 30 years. I always wanted to paint and this Fall I just did that. The class was around less than a dozen but most people have the experience of Acrylic or oil painting before. I was a new comer. It was tricky to make a portrait stands out in three dimensional by using color, value and temperature. I have done sculpture 7 years ago and drawing portrait was not new to me but make the color into third dimensional was no easy task. Anyhow, I was understanding more and doing better; to my surprise I was signed on the most improved student in the class consider the classmates work are awesome and one classmate work was GREAT. Above is one of the school project, have some texture on the background to start off and please comment on my work. More work in the future.

If you are thinking to do some drawing and painting in more advance level please check out Justine Ogilvie; my previous instructor’s work and you never know we might meet there.

I am turning into one of those brides that I never thought I would be. No, I have not been exhibitin

I am turning into one of those brides that I never thought I would be.

No, I have not been exhibiting any bridezilla-like behavior and no I am definitely not rethinking our plans to fly away to Turks & Caicos for the wedding (it would be a little late for that anyway). Instead, this morning I caught myself googling various items of “Bride Gear”. Exhibit A:

Ok so obviously I wasn’t looking for anything Johnny Depp specific, but you know what I mean right? The shirts, hats, towels, underpants, dresses, swimsuits, shoes, etc. that are personalized with “Future Mrs. So-and-So” and “Bride” and “Mrs.” and “His”. Never in my wildest dreams was I the girl that wore that kind of thing, but with three months left to go, I seem to have fallen into some sort of parallel cheesy bride universe. I’ve decided that maybe I should blame Brie over at Fit Bride for posting the adorable Inkbox Design site link the other day.

Inkbox had me at hello with this pink Miss Bride hoodie. I don’t even LIKE pink very much! WTF is going on here!? Anyway, I think it’s comfy looking, cute, and perfect for a long morning of trudging through multiple airports on our way to the islands. Plus it will be nice to have another warm layer to wear since we are leaving chilly Charm City at the crack of dawn on February 23rd. Please please please don’t let it snow.

If I end up getting this hoodie (quite possible), then I must remember to stop myself from also getting one of their cute tees because really there are only so many items of “Miss Bride” clothing that a girl should wear at one time. One is actually pushing it in my opinion.

Go ahead and make fun of me for this next thing because I’ve been laughing at myself for an hour. It reminds me of something Mariah Carey would own. I am appalled at the fact that the thought of wearing this would even enter my mind, BUT we ARE getting married on a beach so it’s not like I won’t have the need for another bathing suit. And while I’m at it, why not be all showy-offy about why I’m there in the first place?

I was thinking something like this, with a halter top (unless I can find a bandeau) in white with some rhinestones on my rear that advertise my brideyness. Although it would be funny to have my new last name emblazoned on my rear end, there are way too many creepsters out there and I don’t want them knowing what I might answer to. (Besides “idiot” for buying a personalized bride swimsuit.) Obviously I would have to pass on the blingtastic rhinestone ring at the top. Or would I?….

Don’t blame Inkbox for either the swimsuit or this next item because it’s not their fault.

These would at least be somewhat practical right? Well the “Bride” one would be; more useful for M would be a giant black beach umbrella with “Groom” written on it (I think he thinks his skin is more sun sensitive then it really is). There are lots of font and color options with these big beach towels and they even come all wrapped up in a cute ribbon. Maybe that explains why they are $31 apiece. *balk*

I have a crush on them, but I’m afraid I can’t rationalize spending that much money on a towel. Maybe I can just sew my own at home.

On the exciting actual bridal attire front (read: my dress), my alterations are starting on Friday! Major “SQUEE!” November 27th is exactly three months out from the wedding so I thought this is as good a time as any to get moving on it. Hopefully it won’t end up being too expensive.

And hopefully I have a lot of success staying away from all the delicious temptations that might cause me to not even fit into my dress come February. All I want for Christmas this year is WILLPOWER.

I recently was invited to visit the new home of my former clients. While there, I noticed a really pretty blue and white ceramic jar sitting in the middle of their kitchen table. Next to the jar was a small pad of paper and a pen. It was a wedding gift and it was called the thankful jar (Dagnes…correct me if I’m wrong on the name ). The premise being that any time you think of something that you are thankful for, no matter how big or small, you write it down on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. On Thanksgiving, you take out all the pieces of paper and read off what you were thankful for during the past year.

What an incredibly thoughful and amazing gift! I think as human beings, we do tend to forget all those little blessings that we have in our lives. These stressful times of high unemployment, war, and violence that is seen so much on our TV’s and in our newspapers (yes, I still get a newspaper) tends to make us believe that there is nothing to be thankful for in our lives. Yet life provides so many moments for us to be thankful for and we often forget about them when we are bombarded with negativity. A precious smile from one of my boys, a big hug from my husband, a nuzzle from one of my cats, a heartfelt note from a friend, a big thank you from one of my clients…..these are things that I am very thankful for every day, and sometimes, I think we tend to take for granted. Imagine if we did take a moment to write those things down, how overflowing that jar would be on Thanksgiving Day!

So to all those who have provided me with life’s many happy moments and blessings this year, I say THANK YOU! Oh, and I think I will be scouring the stores on Black Friday (yes, I will be out a 4 am…LOL) for a pretty little jar to place in my home.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Zuurfontein a farm near Brandfort were the setting for the wedding of Jacques and Elrie on 24 October 2009. I took the photos of Elrie on the farm which lend itself with some wonderful opportunity for some interesting angles.

After that we were of to Brandfort where the church ceremony took place in the Methodist church. This was quit a big occasion because it was the first wedding ceremony in 30 years to take place in the church.

The photo session with Jacques and Elrie took place on the farm and we got some amazing photos with nice warm evening light. The reception took place in a marques tent and with a lot of young people attending it was quit a lively affair.

What a wonderful day which i enjoyed very much.

The year of wedding shoots finally came to an end this past weekend and what a year it has been. We

The year of wedding shoots finally came to an end this past weekend and what a year it has been. We started off by attending the weddings of two couples as one of ‘those’ guests carrying lots of photographic equipment but weren’t the real photographers. Then , within the last two months, we’ve shot our first 3 weddings as primary photographers and have learned so much from these three days. Aside from all of the techinical mumbo jumbo (choosing iso, filters, apertures shutter speeds, carrying ladders around etc etc) we learned that shooting for a good 8-10 hours does bring on mental and physical fatigue toward the end of the day. Neither of us are caffeine junkies so that was never going to be a viable solution and there’s only so much that sugar can do (besides adding a few more fillings to my growing collection of 7 and Marianne’s 5). The best way I’ve found to keep the energy levels and concentration going is to be involved with the wedding and the people there. Each of the three weddings has had a very different ‘vibe’ to the day and how well you as the photographer settle into that vibe undoubtedly adds to your willingness to ask for certain shots, take them, and keep up the enthusiasm.

So, without further ado, here’s a few of the spur of the moment shots from this last weekend’s wedding and the mini story behind them.

Usually, wedding vows are sacrosanct, a protected bit of speech that gets memorised and repeated. Well, I don’t know if it was improvisation on the day or premeditated , but the groom certainly did some on the spot alteration to the enjoyment of all around and probably a red face here and there !

Some creative posing on the ‘car’ shot:

Some blokey antics by the groomsmen:

Hiding from the photographer maybe?

We hadn’t planned on shooting at the gate, so we just left them alone after positioning them and told them to do whatever they liked.

Celebrations in style with cigars

And of course the traditional bridal waltz was ditched for a bit of air guitar halfway through.

And finally, the shot taken for the night, and a close to 2009 for Marianne and me!

We now wait for 2010 to see what the year of the Tiger brings us. Thanks for looking and reading all of our dribble throughout the year.

So yes, my first proper post. I’m getting married next year, lots of people are surprised sinc

So yes, my first proper post. I’m getting married next year, lots of people are surprised since we’re only 21, however we’ve been together nearly 5 years, have lived together over 3 years and totally, completely in love and a perfect match. I think people are surprised because we are so young, but really in the natural, traditional next step in our relationship and I think it is sad that fewer and fewer people are willing to commit to a relationship to this extent untill much later in their lives, if at all.

I take the attitude that if I am happy and in love, why would I want to change it? Whereas, I have found others my age and older who take the attitude of “what if there is someone better?”, don’t you think that is a little depressing?

The other thing I don’t get is the traditions of weddings. Why do so many brides to be dream of the clichéd fairytale wedding when really it should be a celebration of you and your partners love, your relationship and your individuality. So why not go wild, choose what you love and don’t give a damn what others think. For me it’s the only time I’m planning on getting married so I want to make it totally ours and memorable.

So, like I said earlier, I’m not good at being concise, but this leads me on to this wonderful website find, Offbeat Bride, which has been providing me with hours of quirky ‘wedding porn’ and inspirational photographs and links. I hope you will enjoy it too: http://offbeatbride.com/

I only wish there was a UK equivalent of Offbeat Bride as it would be great to see some UK weddings and vendor recommendations, I’m having such a struggling finding the right things for our wedding. There used to be a marvelous wedding magazine in the UK called Black Meringue but it seems to have vanished, sadly, before I ever had chance to purposefully buy a copy!

Drop me a line if you find any quirky or kitsch wedding vendors, blogs or other sites.

So, the man of our dreams has finally popped the question. Time to pick out the dress!

WAIT! Not so fast!

Before you tie the knot, it is important to have a serious discussion regarding your finances. Although it may seem like a touchy subject, keep in mind that you will be making a lifelong commitment with this person, which will most likely delve into the realm of making sure the bills are paid on time. Asking these questions will help both of you come to terms with your separate spending habits, debts, and assets and will help you plan accordingly in terms of achieving-or maintaining-a comfortable lifestyle relatively free from financial strife.

TLC’s Ultimate Cake Off is one of my favorite shows. There’s just something so entertaining about watching people craft edible masterpieces. Plus, cake happens to just be one of my general interests. The other day, as I watched the bakers manifest their creations from mere sketches, I got to thinking: Wouldn’t it be great if brides everywhere could design their own wedding cake and bring their renderings to a local bakery for production? It would eliminate a lot of that “lost in translation” nonsense that goes on when trying to properly convey one’s artistic vision through color adjectives and sweeping hand gestures.

Turns out, I wasn’t the first one to think this. Brides.com allows you to digitally create a wedding cake, as does the software program by WeddingCakeDesignPro.com. These digital programs are perfect for those of us whose freehand drawing abilities stopped progressing at age of seven.
