Happy Thanksgiving Day to all!

The stone bridge that connects Old and New Towns in Wetzlar, Germany is one of the major tourists attractions, maybe just behind the The Dom…the almost cathedral that dominates the Old Town skyline. In this shot, taken low to catch the arch of the bridge, you get both.

Despite the less than ideal light, the Sony H50 manages enough depth of field for an effective shot.

August 29th

I was in Vancouver. There was a layer of ash over everything. There was snow in the background, in the mountains.

September 1st

I was living next to an odd river. I was upset it was fake. It was somewhere up north. I went into the river, it had no water. They always turned off the water in the Fall. I was standing in it, when suddenly someone turned on the water again. I was stuck in the river. There was a child following me.

September 6th

I was in a strange mall. I wanted to get a camera. It was a Canon and it folded up to be tiny and could be carried on a key ring, but still had all the available features.

September 7th

I was stuck in a mall. I couldn’t leave. One of the stores was closing down, so I stole something. There was a priest there. My car fell off a bridge into the water. I saw the word horseman.

September 13th

I was on a boat. There was a swamp we were going through. There were weird animals in the swamp, including a huge snake. I had to meet some strange man named Richard at a coffee shop.

September 15th

I was at a school reunion. Things were strange, I got lost. Every store was having a huge sale. Staci, a girl from school, had become a missionary. Suddenly, I was at a water park. I had to walk over a huge hole full of water to get to the rides. There was a couple that kept insisting that Ted Kennedy was still alive.

September 16th

I was with a strange, unknown woman. We were both looking at a map of North America. We were looking at places we thought should have waterfront property, creating floods. We were concentrating on the North. There was a judge living with her son in that area, for some reason we thought it should be flooded.

September 20th

I was in a mall in Washington DC, with another girl. She was modeling clothes. We were trying to steal tea. Suddenly, I was with Laura Bush. She was talking about her kayak that could fit in the bathtub. We were working on a calendar, I was walking a dog. The dog was trying to eat a poisonous plant, I wouldn’t let him. I tried to eat the plant.

September 23rd

I was at some sort of auditorium with Laura Bush, GW Bush and Obama. There was something wrong, something sad was happening. I was trying to help Laura Bush. I was showing her my cat.

September 26th

I was standing on a hill, watching the sea. There were a lot of people on the beach, having fun. A huge wave came out of nowhere. People went into the water and drowned. There was a car in the water. It was like a toy and got swept out to sea.

September 29th

I was in an airplane with a strange man who had wild brown hair and a wild beard. We were trying to get over the international dateline, but we were having problems.

October 3rd

There was a man, somewhere in the Middle East, amongst Arabs. He was not Arabic. He was walking through a very poor village. He got in a small plane to pilot it, it crashed in water. He lived, but had too many secrets. He had a pill, took it, and died. He was in very shallow water.

October 9th

I was riding a bike along the South American coast, something was wrong, the atmosphere was all weird and a hole opened up in the sky.

October 12th

I was in Africa. There was terrible flooding. I was trying to get to places on a bus. People kept trying to get into my backpack and steal things.

October 26th

I was looking at a floor, it was ruined by water and age. There was American money all over the place, but it was moldy and in bad shape. People were trying to grab the money, but it fell apart in their hands.

October 27th

I was in an old house, getting ready to move. Satan was changing bodies, he was in a little boy. My parents old buffet had stuff in it. Things were empty all over the Quad Cities, all the stores were closed. One of the parks had weeds and plant growth all over it, like nobody had taken care of it. People were gone.

Pedestrian Bridge, Texas: This beautiful arched bridge in Lake Austin was build byMiro Rivera Architectsand is used to connect the client’s main house to the smaller guest house on the other side of the pond. To make the bridge seem as natural as possible within its surroundings they made the decking and reed-like hand rails imperfect but still structurally sound.

—– —– —– —–

Kintaikyo, Iwakuni, Japan: The original Kintai Bridge was built in 1673 but collapsed due to flooding.. The rebuilt bridge survived for more than 200 years until a typhoon destroyed in 1950. The bridge that stands now over the Nishiki River has five wooden arches displaying an incredible amount of detail and craftmanship. Interesting fact: no nails or bolts have been used to build the arches, only clamps and wires.

—– —– —– —–

Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, Brasilia, Brazil: The JK Bridge in Brasilia is a lesson in elegant bridge design. The three huge diagonal arches over the deck of the bridge give the structure an amazing visual fluidity.

—– —– —– —–

Rolling Bridge, London, UK: Thomas heatherwick’s award-winning rolling bridge is an ingenious addition to the grand union canal system in London and is unique. Unlike regular movable canal bridges, the rolling bridge curls up to form an octagon by way of hydraulic jacks to let ships pass.

—– —– —– —–

Beipanjiang River Railroad Bridge, Guizhou, China: Beipanjiang River Railroad Bridge in Guizhou is an enormous railway bridge that was built as part of the ‘Guizhou-Shuibai Railway Project’. Connecting two mountains over a deep ravine, at its highest point the bridge’s deck sits 918ft above the ground. Parenthetically the bridge in connects two of the country’s poorest areas.

—– —– —– —–

Henderson Waves, Southern Ridges, Singapore: ‘Henderson Waves’ is Singapore ’s highest pedestrian bridge and is at the ‘Southern Ridges,’ a beautiful 9 km (six miles) stretch of gardens and parks. The deck of the bridge is made from thousands of Balau wood slats, perfectly cut and arranged, and along the length of the deck a snaking, undulating shell forms sheltered seating areas on every upward curve.

—– —– —– —–

Pont Gustave Flaubert, Rouen , France: This incredible vertical lift bridge is in Rouen, France, who’s spans weigh 1,200 tons each but can be hoisted 180 ft vertically in an impressive 12 minutes. The angular lift structures at the top of each tower weigh 450 tons each. The huge vertical lift allows even the largest cruise liners to sail through.

—– —– —– —–

Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea: This bridge supports two pipelines – one gas, the other oil – across the extremely deep gap in Papua New Guinea. If this were to be officially recognized as a vehicular or pedestrian bridge it would rocket to the top of the ‘world’s highest bridge-span’ with the pipelines at an impressive height of 1,290 ft above the bottom of the gorge. By comparison, the current highest bridge span belongs to the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado, hanging a mere 1,053 ft above ground level.

I really think I’m in love with this amazing place!! Yesterday I went for a drive around Fribo

I really think I’m in love with this amazing place!!

Yesterday I went for a drive around Fribourg City, and walked around parts of the Old Town.
It really makes me realise how young Australia is as a country, and how I love nothing more than to be swept away by the history of a place!

First stop – the bank!
I wanted to practice my French, but gave up as soon as I walked in the door! So my cousin asked the girl if she knew English, which she did a little bit – so money changing = a success!
Pretty awsome conversion rate, and the money makes me giggle with how colourful it is!

I already had to spend some of it buying a power plug convertor – silly me took my American convertor with me instead of my European one. Most expensive buy in a while! Seriously, don’t Australian’s visit this stunning place enough? But it was worth it – 2 cameras, a phone and my straightener that all need converting!!

We drove along a road that made me think about all those half romantic dreams I’ve conjured up about the French country side. It wound down to a café/restaurant, and a bridge that goes over the Sarine River.

I really don’t know how I let myself be tortured like this!! Horrible views right!

The views were amazing – to only have to drive about 15 minutes from home to this, is truly special!
My French is also getting pretty good – I understood a sign well enough to know it said something along the lines that it was mandatory I get on this thing that goes above the stairs!

We then went to another bridge, from which you could see Fribourg in it’s breath taking entirety!
It was starting to get dark, so the lights were slowing coming on, and when we got to a Church that was covered in Mason symbols, we sat back and watched Fribourg come alive for the night!

This Masonic Church was tiny, but had some of the wierdest statues around it! Jesus was posing like a model in one – sassy!
We might go back when it’s open to go inside, and then I’ll take proper photos. I only had my small digital camera with me yesterday, so wouldn’t have been able to do much with the lighting, like I can with my SLR. But thank you Panasonic Lumix, you’re doing pretty well!!

We drove to the centre of the Old Town, and it took several “are you serious?!” questions for me to actually believe that yes, in fact, that was a Prison right in the middle of the Old Town.
Apparently it’s only for petty criminals that were caught shop lifting and the such, so I did manage to breathe a little easier.

A little further down from the prison, is a bridge and river that brought to life the story of the lady in white!
Basically the story is that some kids were playing along the river bank and their ball went into the water, the lady came out and went to give them the ball, as the childen began edging closer to the water their parents started screaming for them to stop getting closer to the water, at which point the lady dissapeared. Spooky!
… and so is this photo I took!

So that was my little adventure for the afternoon.

This place is no less than stunning, the history will continue to blow me away, the people are fascinating, the air is crisp and clear, the scenery breathtaking and life is amazing!

I managed to create a panorama of one of my favorite locations at the Quabbin Reservoir, the Bridge at Gate 30. I say “managed” to create a panorama, which is not exactly true. I create quite a few of them, but they’re usually not sufficiently large for posting on Gigapan. Gigapan requires a 50 megabyte file, when it is a closed compressed JPEG. Photographers will note, that’s a pretty big file! This was created with a Nikon D3x, an enormously gratifying camera with which to work. The lens was the new NIkon 85 MM Tilt Shift, also amazingly sharp. Enjoy.

     Flood! Flood! Flood is everywhere!

Because of the previous storm sweeping all across the UK, several regions of the country suffered from severe flood. In Cumbria, conditions were especially serious: residents suddenly became homeless, bridge collapsed, and a policeman even died on eve of his birthday while he was leading the stuck traffic on the collapsing bridge.

It’s hard to imagine that there are such heavy rains and storms during winter time. Back in my country, floods only happen during the summer, and as far as I can remember, ever since the most severe flood happened in 1997, I can hear relavent news at the same time every year. Maybe it was because of the global warming, the weather is becoming abnormal. Normally there won’t be snow in my country until January or February, but this year, even as early as November, there has already snowed, and the weather turned to be very very cold, which was, rarely seen.

There are several Hollywood movies warning people what would happen if we just let the climate be as it liked. People usually get shocked when they see the movies, but forget it soon as the film is over. I don’t think the doomsday is coming as what “2012″ suggests, but if we human beings still don’t do something to stop the tendency, it’s not impossible that humankind will really face our own destiny somewhere near the year 2012.

The sound of the rushing water is heard

Pulling me towards it

Away from this path

It seems so easy

To follow that sound

Seems to have a life all its own

Luring me with its simplicity

Planks giving way

Empty space where once was solid

Drawing me towards it

Mental clarity finally wins out

Gasping for air as though drowning

Slowly placing one foot in front of the other

This bridge becomes sturdy again

Though the swirling waters call

Though the yearning to end it all

Beneath my feet still calls

Here is a page about the upper end of the old Limerick Navigation, with photos of the Ardnacrusha headrace, Castleconnell and its weir and quay, O’Briensbridge, Errina bridge and Doonass. There are photos taken over the last few days and older photos, showing normal (post-Ardnacrusha) levels at the same locations. The recent photos do at least give a hint of the levels that the pre-Ardnacrusha waterway coped with.

At time of writing, the ESB says it is going to release more water down the river to O’Briensbridge, Castleconnell and Limerick.

Photos of the lower stretches (Plassey, Corbally, the canal harbour and the Abbey River) will be posted later (floods permitting).
