Semi-trucks have very large blind spots which makes changing lanes difficult and dangerous for a driver. A lane change becomes exceeding more difficult if the truck lacks the proper mirrors. Semi-truck mirror placement is heavily regulated by state and federal laws. NTSB investigations frequently turn on how mirrors are placed.

Karen Sorensen of the Joliet Patch reports:

“A Chicago man was seriously injured Thursday when his semi-truck was clipped by another semi on Interstate 80, forcing his vehicle into the grassy median west of Briggs Street, Illinois State Police Sgt. James M. Powell said.

The accident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. when a truck traveling in the right lane of westbound I-80 pulled into the left lane and collided with a second truck already in that lane, Powell said. The impact caused the second truck to veer into the center median.

The truck driver, 38, was badly injured and transported to a Joliet-area hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to serious, Powell said.

Both lanes of westbound I-80 were closed for more than five hours. One lane of traffic reopened at about 5:30 p.m., but the scene was not completely cleared until about 7:45 p.m., Powell said. A gapers’ block into the eastbound lanes of traffic caused a long jam on both side of the interstate, he said.

It’s possible they may need to close a lane tomorrow to clean up any fuel that remains from the spill caused by the crash, he said.

The driver who caused the accident, a 30-year-old Chicago man, stopped at the scene and was issued two tickets. Powell said he did not know what charges were cited.”

(STMW) – A 30-year-old man died Saturday from injuries he suffered being hit by a Will County Sheriff’s squad car Wednesday night in southwest suburban New Lenox.

Andrew L. May of Joliet had been on life support at Silver Cross Hospital since shortly after the accident occurred about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the accident occurred as a deputy was on patrol heading south on Briggs Street near Elgin Avenue in Joliet Township. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street, but police said May was in the roadway “about 4 or 5 feet from the shoulder” when he was struck by the deputy.

The deputy was not injured or identified but has been placed on administrative leave, police said.

May remained hospitalized until he was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

The crash still is under investigation.
