For the locale folks of the desert state, Rajasthan, the festival of Holi is a whimsical event which

For the locale folks of the desert state, Rajasthan, the festival of Holi is a whimsical event which takes on an altogether special meaning and hue, colour and paint notwithstanding.

During the Hindu month of Phagun, Rajasthanis celebrate Holi by singing special songs called “Faag”, which celebrate the triumph of good over evil and the onset of spring.

The tradition of celebrating faag season has its own significance in the rural society which lasts till holi. There are reportedly different types of faags, for instance Krishna faag, which is voiced as a verse to Lord Krishna’s romps during the festival of Holi.

Apparently faags are eminently celebrated all over the India, especially in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Mathura and Rajasthan according to their traditions.

In Jaipur, except Janmashtami, Holi is celebrated grandly in Govind Dev ji Temple of Jaipur. During the festival, Faag, Raas and special Jhankis start from one month before holi festival.

Instead of color or gulal powders, flowers are used to play Holi here. The celebration shows the re-enactment of Lathmar Holi of Braj and Muslim artists pay homage to the immortal love of Radha and Krishna.

The history of Faag Utsav is growing since 300 years and the raison d’être for using flowers instead of color stanches from the belief that the use of the color hurts the idol of Krishna. The colorful affair is eventually marked by many cultural exuberant processions, like dancers wearing colorful dresses and painting their bodies in anticipation of a performance before the public.

The legends of Radha and Krishna are showcased through vibrant folk songs & dances of Holi at the temple for more than a week during the faag festival.

At the temple, the greatest artist of the world, Krishna, witnesses the art of numerous performers which are performed as offering to Krishna. The celebration of Faag utsav certainly broadens the meaning of Holi.

Link to song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtE6HHLfDIU

Meaning and context:

A song about virah… about longing…

The song, an original composition for Rituparno Ghosh’s Raincoat, is an example of the use of folk themes in a contemporary setting. The protagonists of the story belong to Bhagalpur, a historically significant city in Bihar, and thus, the words of the song take from the scenes and stories of that region.

The words also evoke images of braj- “Saghan saawan laayi, Kadam bahaar”. It was under the shade of the Kadam tree that the love of Krishna and Radha blossomed. The poet here draws upon that image and says that the Kadam tree blossomed in the monsoons (as lovers took its shade like Radha-Krishna). In the next line “Mathura se doli laaye, chaaro kahaar”, the poet refers to the kahaar men, who are principally water bearers and belong to a lower social class of the region. In India, earlier the bride was carried in a palanquin which was carried by these kahaar men, and the poet has spoken of that tradition here.

There is great beauty in the following lines:
“Apne nayan se neer bahaaye, Apni jamuna khud aap hi banaave
Laakh baar usme hi nahaye, Poora na hoyi asnan”

In India, the tradition is to bathe in holy waters of Ganga and Yamuna to absolve oneself of sins. The bath is called asnan in the North Indian dialect. The poet here says I cried (thinking what sins bereft me of my love) and I cried so much that it seemed like I bathed in them. It seemed like I was taking a bath of ablution in the holy Yamuna. But even after million such baths it seems that my sins have not yet washed off, my asnan is still not complete, and so I will have to wait much longer.

Finally, the poet says that now I shall only wear the sage like mark on my forehead of sandalwood that is worn by sanyasi (saintly) women. The sandalwood tree is the abode of snakes. In Indian poetry, “chandan garal samaan” is a common phrase that means sandalwood is equivalent to poison. The poet here says that the poison of the sandalwood mark, symbolic of renunciation,n should be the end of all this pain and suffering.

The Song:

Piya tora kaisa abhimaan…?

Saghan saawan laayi, Kadam bahaar
Mathura se doli laaye, chaaro kahaar
Nahi aaaye, Nahi aaaye
Kesariyaa balam hamaar
Angana badaa sun saan
Piya tora kaisa abhimaan…?

Apne nayan se neer bahaaye
Apni jamuna khud aap hi banaave
Laakh baar usme hi nahaye
Poora na hoyi asnan

Sookhe kes, rookhe bhes,
Manwaa bejaan
Piya tora kaisa abhimaan…?

Bol sakhi kahe kari saajo singar
Na pahni ab sana kaanchna haar
Khali chandan lagao amma hamaar
Chandan garal samaan

Line by line translation:

Why such pride my love?

Heavy monsoons brought blossoms to the Kadam tree
Four water bearers brought the bride’s palanquin from Mathura
But never came, never came,
My love, whose beauty is like saffron
The patio seems empty
Why such pride my love?

Teardrops flow from my eyes
With them, I make my own Yamuna
A million times I was bathed in them
But still my bath of ablution does not seem complete

Hair have dried, appearance has roughened,
Heart feels lifeless
Why such pride my love?

Why do you dress up so my sakhi
Don’t wear that diamond pendant
Only wear a sage like sandalwood mark (on your forehead)
That mark will be your poison

Meaning and Context:

This song from the movie Lagaan, recreates the magic of Maha Raas, originally enacted by Krishna on the full moon night of Sharad Poornima. All the young maidens of Krishna’s village were enchanted by the sublime beauty of his form and nature. Each one desired him as their own lover. Krishna, however, loved Radha and Radha alone. But he didn’t want gopis to feel let down on the beautiful full moon night, and so he took up multiple forms and danced with every gopi that night. The incident is recalled as the Maha Raas or Raas Leela and is celebrated on the full moon night of the Hindu month of Kartik.

In the movie, however, the scene takes place on the occasion of Janamashtami, the birthday of Krishna, which comes on the eighth day of the dark half of Hindu month of Saawan. The choreography is a mix of traditional Dandiya and classical dances. The Dandiya dance (dance of sticks) is essentially associated with this event of Maha Raas. The song is presented as a light-hearted duet, where Radha is jealous to see Krishna (or Kanha or Kanhaiya- his other names) always flirting the gopis, while Krishna tries to pacify her by reassuring his love for her.

Lyrics to the song:

Radha:
Madhuban mein jo Kanhaiya kisi gopi se mile
Kabhi muskaaye, kabhi chhede, kabhi baat kare
Radha kaise na jale?
Radha kaise na jale?
Aag tan mann mein lage
Radha kaise na jale?
Radha kaise na jale?

Krishna:
Madhuban mein bhale Kaanha kisi gopi se mile
Mann mein to Radha ke hi prem ke hain phool khile
Kis liye Radha jale?
Kis liye Radha jale?
Bina soche samjhe
Kis liye Radha jale?
Kis liye Radha jale?

Krishna:
O, gopiyaan taarein hain, chaand hai Radha
Phir kyoon hai usko biswaas aadha?

Radha:
Kaanhaji ka jo sadaa idhar udhar dhyaan rahe
Radha bechaari ko phir apne pe kya maan rahe?

Krishna:
Gopiyaan aani jaani hain,
Radha to mann ki rani hai
Saanjh sakhaare, Jamna kinaare
Radha Radha hi Kaanha pukaare

Radha:
Baahon ke haar jo daale koi Kaanha ke gale
Radha kaise na jale?

Radha:
Mann mein hai Radhe ko Kaanha jo basaaye
To Kaanha kaahe ko usse na bataaye?

Krishna:
Prem ki apni alag boli, alag bhaasa hai
Baat nainon se ho Kaanha ki yahi aasa hai

Radha:
Kaanha ke yeh jo naina hain
Chheene gopiyon ke chaina hain
Mili najariya, hui baawariya
Gori gori si koi gujariya

Krishna:
Kaanha ka pyaar kisi gopi ke mann mein jo pale
Kis liye Radha jale, Radha jale, Radha jale?

Radha:
Radha kaise na jale?

Line by line translation:

Radha:
When Kanhaiya meets gopis in flower gardens
And he smiles, and teases, and talks to them
How should Radha not be jealous?
How should Radha not be jealous?
It burns her mind and body
How should Radha not be jealous?
How should Radha not be jealous?

Krishna:
Even if Kaanha meets gopis in flower gardens
In his heart only the flower of Radha blossoms
Why should Radha be jealous?
Why should Radha be jealous?
Without thinking and understanding
Why should Radha be jealous?
Why should Radha be jealous?

Krishna:
Gopis are stars, moon is Radha
Then why does her trust wane?

Radha:
When Kanha is always looking here and there
How will poor Radha take pride in herself?

Krishna:
Gopis will come and go, Radha is the queen of heart
In the evening, my friend, on Yamuna’s bank
‘Radha-Radha’ Kanha calls out

Radha:
When they garland your neck with their arms
How should Radha not be jealous?

Radha:
If Krishna keeps Radha in his heart
Then why doesn’t he ever tell her?

Krishna:
Love has its own tongue, its own language
Kanha hopes the talking is done through eyes

Radha:
These eyes of Kanha
Take away the peace of gopis
If the eyes meet, they lose their mind
These pretty maidens

Krishna:
If love for Kanha resides in some gopi’s heart
Why should Radha be jealous?

Radha:
How should Radha not be jealous?

Meaning and Context:

The virhan is rejoicing to finally see her lover come home. She is asking her sakhis to join in and welcome him. Like Radha waited many long years to hear Krshna’s flute, she too has waited. But no more.

Aayo re… aayo re sajan… sakhi laayo re… layo re umang… sakhi ho….

Chan chanan chanan
Gunjegi aaj
Murli ki dhun

Man magan magan
Hokar ke aj nachey
Virhan ke saath saath

Aayo re, aayo re, Sajan
Sakhi, layo re, layo re,
Umang… sakhi ho….

Koyal bhi ku-hu ku-hu ganey lagi
Saawan ki rim jhim chaaney lagi

Aayo re sakhi, aayo re
Aayo re sakhi, aayo re

Cham chamak chamak cham nachey
Kaali ghanghor ghataye
Saawan ka odh ke aanchal
Bairan purva lehraye

Koyal bhi ku-hu ku-hu ganey lagi
Saawan ki rim jhim chaaney lagi

Man ki payal karey chanan chanan
Tan ki umang karey ghanan ghanan

Man magan magan
Hokar ke aj nachey
Virhan ke saath saath

Aayo re, aayo re, Sajan
Sakhi, layo re, layo re,
Umang… sakhi ho….

The chiming sound
Will echo today
In the rhythm of the flute

Lost in it the heart
Will dance today
With the lovesick maid

My lover has come
Look sakhi, he brought with him
Such joy… Oh sakhi….

The koel has started singing its song
The drizzle of monsson has also begun

He has come sakhi, he has come…
He has come sakhi, he has come…

With flash and glow they dance
The dark water laden clouds
Wrapped in the cover of monsoon
Like an enemy, the wind is blowing

The koel has started singing its song
The drizzle of monsson has also begun

The mind is filled with chiming of anklets
The body is filled with joyous uproar of clouds

Lost in it the heart
Will dance today
With the lovesick maid

My lover has come

Meaning and Context:

Shyam, as mentioned in another post, is not only a smoky grey-blue colour but also connotes the colour of Krishna and Krishna himself.

The song, a beautiful duet from Water, is a song of holi where Radha is asking her beloved Krishna to cover her with the colour of love. Holi has always been associated with Krishna, as he started this festival of colour. The holi of brij, the homestead of Krishna, the region of Gokul-Mathura-Vrindavan, is popular even today. The festival is still celebrated by the people of brij for a whole week with extraordinary vibrancy.

Even though the song is an original composition for the movie, it carries a very strong element of folk within. “Aa shyam rang me rang du” is a line very often used in folk songs of the region. Many of the other lyrics of the song like “rang-bhang ka hai mausam” and “utare kabhi na gori rang aisa tan pe mal du” are also very commonly used traditional lyrics. The song leaves us with vivid images of brij holi- dhol (a two sided wooden drum), gulaal (dry colour), bhang (home made intoxication) and, of course, shyam rang.

Lyrics to the song:

Aa shyam rang me rang du…
Mohey shyam rang rang de…

Utare kabhi na gori
Rang aisa tan pe mal du
Aaja…

Aaja re mayuri cham cham
Rang bhang ka hai mausam
Aaj nashe me chur door har gam
Mast hoke masti me jhume hum

Colour me with shyam….

It’s the season for colour and wine
Lets drain our sorrows with wine
Lets free ourselves and dance

Songs of lovers resound around us

Make your eyes meet mine
Let them meet
Quench the thirst of my eyes
Quench it

Make your eyes meet mine
Quench the thirst of my eyes
Love is calling, oh lover

Oh lover…

Meaning and conext:

This song from Raincoat is about the loneliness of virah. The poet imagines the soul of a lovelorn woman as stranded alone on a river bank. In an Indian village, it is customary for the women to fetch water from the river. It gives them a chance to socialize, and sometimes talk about their lovers. It is an image very often used in Indian poetry.

While all her sakhis (girl friends) have left for home, back to their lovers, the love-sick maid finds herself standing there all alone. She calls out to the majhi (the boatman) in the hope of finding some momentary comfort by sharing the condition of her heart. The solitary majhi, is the symbol of loneliness, and also of distant hope, as one day he may bring back the lover in his boat.

The Song:

Shyam dhale hai
Sakhiya ab laut gayi saari
Akele hum nadiya kinare…

Majhi tora naam to bata
Phir kaise pukare tujhe, kaise pukare?
Akele hum nadiya kinare…

Line by line translation:

The evening is setting in
All the sakhis have returned
Alone I stand at the river bank

Majhi tell your name
How do I call you, oh how…?
Alone I stand at the river bank

Meaning and Context: Krishna was brought up in Gokul, where he was brought up by Nand baba and Yasho

Meaning and Context:

Krishna was brought up in Gokul, where he was brought up by Nand baba and Yashoda ma, where he took his cows grazing for the day, where he stole milk from gopis (women of Gokul) and smashed their matkis (earthen vessels), where he went gallivanting with his sakhas (friends) and got into all kinds of trouble, where he played his bansuri (flute) from evening till night sitting listlessly under the Kadam tree on the banks of river Yamuna, where he met Radha and fell in love with her.

He left Gokul when he had barely come of age and went to Mathura to dethrone his deviant uncle Kans. After defeating Kans, he became the Lord of Mathura, a wide-reaching prosperous kingdom of the north. However, he missed his home in Gokul and all his friends and, of course, Radha.

The song Mathura Nagarpati from Raincoat is about Krishna deciding to give up his kingdom and go back home to Gokul. It is sung most delicately by Shubha Mudgal in the Brij dialect. Brij is the region of Mathura-Gokul-Vrindavan. It is associated with all stories of Krishna and Radha and their eternal love. This song evokes vivid images from the stories of Radha-Kirshna and resounds with the very bittersweet feeling that was characteristic to their story of love.

The song:

Subah subah ka khyaal aaj
Wapas gokul chal mathura raaj

Mathura nagarpati kaahe tum gokul jao?

Manohar vesh chhod nand raaj
Sar se utaarke sundar taaj
Raj dand chhod bhumi par vaaj
Phir kaahe baansuri bajaao…?
Mathura nagarpati kaahe tum gokul jaao?

Kaun sa anokha geet gahe pee kakool?
Raj path jaise aaj bhai dhool
Kaun sa anokha geet gahe pee kakool?
Birhan laage phir hridaya akool
Raj kaaj man na lagaao…
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?

Tumhari priya ab puri gharvaali
Doodh navan ghivoo din bhar khaali
Biraha ke aansoon kab ke ponch daali
Phir kaahe dard jagaao…?
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?

Pur naari saari vyakul nayan
Kusum sajja lage kantak shayan
Poor naari saari vyakul nayan
Raat bhar madhav jaagat bechain
Kaahe aadhi raat saarathi bulaayo…?
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?

Dheere dheere pahunchat jamuna ke teer
Sunsaan panghat mridul sameer
Dheere dheere pahunchat jamuna ke teer
Khan khan madhav birha madeer
Use kaahe bhool na paao…?
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?

Line by line Translation:

An early morning thought
The Lord of Mathura must go back to Gokul

Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?

Leaving behind such splendor, oh son of Nand
Putting away your beautiful crown
Giving up your specter that rules the land
Why do you again play the flute?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?

What quaint song do the birds sing?
That makes you give up your kingdom like it is dust
What quaint song do the birds sing?
That again harmonizes to your heart the woman you left behind
That has taken your mind off your kingdom
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?

The girl you loved is now married
Milk cream ghee is all she does the whole day
She wiped away the tears of separation long back
Why do you evoke that pain again?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?

All the women of city have anxious eyes
Flower strewn bed seems like a bed of thorns
All the women of city have anxious eyes
Madhav (You) keep awake all night uneasy
Why do you call the chariot driver at midnight?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?

Slowly reaching the banks of Yamuna
The river side is deserted, the wind blows sweetly
Slowly reaching the banks of Yamuna
The sound of khan khan (of her ornaments) is heard, separation is your wine
Why cant you forget her?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?
