The Wanted have gotten a reputation lately for being smack talkers, but did you know they’re also potty mouths? While the guys were in New York City they sat down with CBS Local to talk British slang — the good, the bad, and the very dirty.

We asked them to define a variety of terms, some of which are quite NSFW (ask your minky) and some which only sound dirty to Americans (what is a punter?)

[worldnow id=7111757 width=400 height=300 type=video]

The Wanted’s Brit Slang Glossary:

Gobbing — spitting
Tom Parker says, “I think girls spitting is pretty rank. We encourage males to gob all day long.” But Nathan Sykes adds, “Just not on us.” Max George says, “I prefer a swallower than a gobber.”

Minky — what little girls call their lady bits
Siva Kaneswaran says, “Is that like ‘stinky minky’?” Jay McGuinness clarifies, “Before [young girls] do sex ed, they call it flower or minky. You could never say…’Oh, I smashed her minky.’ It’d be like, ‘Ugh, what was she five?’”

C***-Up — mess up
The things the boys had to say about this term were too NSFW to show you.

Chuffed — happy
Jay explains, “I know the American equivalent. Stoked.”

Slapper — lady of loose morals
Nathan politely puts it as, “The sort of girl you wouldn’t take home to your mum.” But Jay is less reserved, calling a slapper a, “sleeps around, whorish, slut t****. She acts like a prostitute but she doesn’t take cash.” Okay then!

Toff — upper class, rich person
Tom says, “The Queen’s a toff.”

Punter — a regular
Jay translates this word for the 21st century, calling them, “A real life version of an online subscriber.”

Fanny — lady bits
The boys use a variety of Brit slang to describe this one, including minky and minge. Max delights in saying, “Stinky minky, sometimes pinky.” So now you know why Americans and their fanny packs are so hilarious to the Brits. And Max would like to compliment your lovely fanny.

Rat Arsed — wasted, drunk
Nathan carefully clarifies that this does not mean sticking any animals in your person for sexual pleasure. This inspires Tom to inquire, “Wasn’t there a rumor that Richard Gere did that once?”

Gusher — a seismic event that sometimes occurs when a woman experiences extensive pleasure
For the record, Nathan asked to add this to our list of slang terms, because he’d asked around the night before and been told it didn’t translate in America. Some ladies explained to him that we have a candy filled with fruit juices called Gushers. After some deliberation on how to explain it, Jay said, “When a man and a woman love each other…literally. She experiences an explosion of…” Tom interjected to save them all by saying, “Fruit juices.”

Now we completely understand how Nathan’s 19th birthday party was at the Playboy Mansion.

Rat Arsed — wasted, drunk
Nathan carefully clarifies that this does not mean sticking any animals in your person for sexual pleasure. This inspires Tom to inquire, “Wasn’t there a rumor that Richard Gere did that once?”

One Direction have blown up BIG TIME here in the U.S. over the last few months with their single, “What makes you beautiful.” The U.K. boy band have become the pulse of the teen generation. The “bad boys” have been photographed drinking beer and are now at risk of being sued for a million dollars by a U.S. band of the same name.

In an interview with MTV News, the guys shared some of their “British Slang”, check it out!

“Trousers” are pants and a “jumper” is a sweater. Louis Tomlinson said “fit” is a key word to describe an attractive person, explaining, “If a girl’s fit, she’s hot.” One Directioners might use “fit” to describe the “blokes” in 1D: “He’s a nice bloke,” Liam Payne said of the term for a guy. On the other end of the spectrum, Harry Styles let us in on a word for a special lady and romantic interest. “Quite slangy,” Harry explained, “but if someone was your girlfriend, you’d be like, ‘That’s my bird.’ ” And, finally, “sithee” means “see ya” or “goodbye.”

If you were hoping to become the “bird” of one of the members of One Direction, you may have your shot! The guys are coming to Las Vegas June 9th, get the info on the concert HERE! One Direction’s song consistently held the #1 spot on John Moug’s 8 Most Wanted for about 8 says straight, but have since been overtaken by Justin Bieber’s new single, “Boyfriend.” To cast a vote for One Diretion, simply text “What makes you beautiful” to 82985!

5:15 - home from work

8:30 (sometimes 9pm if I’m being selfish) – tuck little bug into bed

That leaves just over 3 hours for cuddles, playtime, story reading, and all-things-fun with my little one…not to mention supper at some point.

Because I sit all day…8 hours of “chair-butt”…I SO look forward to working out. In the perfect-weather world — 75, sunny with a slight breeze — I would get in a stroller run to and around the park so I’m not cutting into mommy-daughter time. Unfortunately South Dakota weather doesn’t accomodate my needs and by the time 8:30 hits…I have a mountain of laundry/dishes/cleaning/blah/blah/blah/yada/yada/yada that needs attention as well has the hubby, but yet I want to workout and blog and surf pintrest and this and that.

Sound familiar to anyone? If I am lucky, which I’m usually not these days, I get in about 45 minutes of hardcore working out through my Insanity workouts (more on them some other time). Lately though it’s been 15 minutes here or even 5 minutes there (which was the case this morning at 6:30).

For crazy days like this, I highly recommend BodyRockTV.

Since about Christmas time, I’ve been a major fan of their hard, sweaty quick workouts. I said QUICK, not quick and easy. You earn every bead of sweat that accumulates. First off, the instructor lady is like “CRAZY- you make me jealous of you abs -FIT;”

…second, she has a British accent…ok, in case you didn’t know, my hubby is British so I’m all for the accent and third, the workouts usually take about 12 minutes (with little or no equipment). I add a 5 minute warm-up and a good stretch at the end as well. There are days when I do just half the workout so I’m getting at least something in.

If you are looking for quick workouts that are motivating and effective, definitely visit this site here!

In the mean time, I’ll leave you with some British dictionary education. Did you know…

The term “fit” in England is not quite the same as “fit” in the US.

USA, “I need to workout, I’m so un-fit.” “He’s fit as a fiddle.” — Translation: In shape

England, “Check her out mate, she’s well fit.” — Translation: Hot, good looking.

There’s your international food for thought today!

Ace – If something is ace it is awesome. I used to hear it a lot in Liverpool. Kids thought all cool stuff was ace, or brill.

Aggro – Short for aggravation, it’s the sort of thing you might expect at a football match. In other words – trouble! There is sometimes aggro in the cities after the pubs shut!

All right? – This is used a lot around London and the south to mean, “Hello, how are you”? You would say it to a complete stranger or someone you knew. The normal response would be for them to say “All right”? back to you. It is said as a question. Sometimes it might get expanded to “all right mate”? Mostly used by blue collar workers but also common among younger people.

Anti-clockwise – The first time I said that something had gone anti-clockwise to someone in Texas I got this very funny look. It simply means counter-clockwise but must sound really strange to you chaps! I think he thought I had something against clocks!

Any road – Up north (where they talk funny!!) instead of saying anyway, they say “any road”! Weird huh?

Arse – This is a word that doesn’t seem to exist in America. It basically means the same as ass, but is much ruder. It is used in phrases like “pain in the arse” (a nuisance) or I “can’t be arsed” (I can’t be bothered) or you might hear something was “a half arsed attempt” meaning that it was not done properly.

Arse about face – This means you are doing something back to front.

Arse over elbow – This is another way of saying head over heels but is a little more descriptive. Usually happens after 11pm on a Saturday night and too many lagers! Some Americans say ass over teakettle apparently!

Arse over tit – Another version of arse over elbow, but a bit more graphic!

Arsehole – Asshole to you. Not a nice word in either language.

Arseholed – Drunk! Usually in the advanced stages of drunken stupor, someone would be considered “completely arseholed”. Never me, of course!

As well – You chaps say also when we would say “too” or “as well”. For instance if my friend ordered a Miller Lite, I would say “I’ll have one as well”. I often heard people saying something like “I’ll have one also”. You’d be more likely to hear someone in England ordering a pint of lager!

Ass – Your backside, but mostly a donkey!

Au fait – Another one of those French expressions that have slipped into the English language. This one means to be familiar with something. I’d say at the end of reading all this you’d be au fait with the differences between American and English!

For Christmas, my aunt gave me The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club by Gil McNeil. I had

For Christmas, my aunt gave me The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club by Gil McNeil. I had my reservations about reading this. If you have never seen it, the front cover has a picture of a blue couch, some knitting needles and a long knitted scarf in shades of blue and green. Kind of a turn off, I know.

But my Aunt gave it to me, so I thought I’d at least give it a chance. I’m glad I did.

I loved it. I picked up the next two books that make up the Beach Street Society Novels: Needles and Pearls and Knit One Pearl One.

All three novels have pictures of knitting accoutrements on the cover. If you don’t knit, don’t let that turn you off. I don’t knit either, and I really enjoyed reading these three novels. It is not a trilogy, so don’t think that you are embarking on a dramatic and epic quest for the perfect knitted ensemble. It’s about relationships, and the fact that one can find satisfaction and happiness with friends, food, and a damn fun hobby. Even if it doesn’t necessarily involve a man.

Jo Mackenzie, a recently widow with two young children, is leaving London for a small seaside town. She plans to take over her grandmother’s knitting shop. Jo starts a “Stitch and Bitch” group at the shop, to see if she can encourage more interest in knitting. The group of women talk, laugh, drink wine and eat great food all while knitting something fabulous. You laugh at all the irreverent statements made by Ellen, Jo’s saucy-mouthed best friend. My other favorite is Jo’s grandmother, who is so darn nice and supportive that I wish I had her for my own granny.

Although the book seems like it would be dull, it isn’t. It’s charming and witty. It leaves you feeling like you want to pop into your local yarn shop and pick up some needles and a pattern. I should mention that this book may cause you to have an overwhelming urge to start using British slang. I started calling my daughter “Poppet” after a bit.

Jo establishes herself in the small town by creating friendships with many of the town members. For example, there’s Connie and her husband (the Italian trained chef) who own the local pub. I think Jo reminds me of what most of us try to accomplish every day. We try hard to be courteous and nice to the people we run into, even though some days we just want to tell you to bugger off. I found myself rooting for Jo, simply because I think she is someone who I would want to be friends with. She’s honest, loyal, and kind. She also manages to get the upper hand against the villain in the book: Annabelle Morgan, the snobby PTA president who loves telling people what to do. (Admit it, you know someone who is annoying like this.)

So here is a sample of something I knitted after I read the books. Just Kidding!

When my daughter was born, my friend, Joyce, gave me this lovely hand-knitted dress.

If you are in the mood for something leisurely and charming, I recommend these books. Don’t be surprised if you start hunting around for a local Stitch and Bitch group after you have finished.

Rating: 4/5

I’m slightly behind on posting new posts, blame the Spanish sun (and pastries!) I’m trying to soak up or aprovechar live up every day I’m given here in Spain. On the 31st I booked my ticket for an out of Spain excursion with my very best friend, Hannah. Hannah has been my most cherished friend since middle school but moved to Wales to attend Cardiff University upon graduation. This was not a sudden desire, whimsical decision to leave Georgia for a continent across the Atlantic. Her mom was born there and her grandparents still live there. However cool her posh new European life is, we have been separated for what seems like an eternity. We will once again join together for a new installation of Hannah and Amy adventures when we travel to Dublin, Ireland together in March, it will definitely be beyond pants–British slang for totally awesome (I think)! On to current news…Here in Spain we visited the Jardí Botànic de la Universitat de València, or the botanical gardens. I felt like Alice herself walking past tropical lushness (some plants barren because it’s winter) regardless the mad-hatter would surely have found it a suitable location for tea.

Some of the girls thought it would be a marvelous idea to dress up and have a photo-shoot ANTM style-Fierce like Tyra-in the gardens (which we definitely plan on doing!) The next day I went to my first authentic futbol game and it was loca. Despite the fact we were in the nosebleed section, like we need a tampon up our nose to plug this bleed high, yet it didn’t stop me from enjoying the Valencia vs. Barcelona game, or looking at Pique through my camera zoom. Watch out Shakira becuase I do have plans of seducing and stealing your chiseled to perfection smoking hot boyfriend.

Thursday night seems to be the prime time that the Spanish students go out. On Feb. 2nd a group of Americans joined them to gather in El parque rio for a prelude to the main course of the discoteca called MYA.

My new Spanish friend Maria and I!

Being in the park would have been quite the unforgettable experience if it hadn’t been so incredibly cold. Regardless it was still an awesome night. Just a tidbit of information: the typical routine is to go out to the discoteca, stay out until 7 am, then return to your humble abode for breakfast. Craziness? Yes. Yet totally worth it? Yes. I can’t think of a better way to top off an extraordinary night dancing in a discoteca than with a bowel of cocoa krispies. Although I’ve had these opportunities to mingle, Valentine’s came and passed without my Spanish special someone dónde está mi novio? (Where is my boyfriend?) Pique just didn’t have time in that busy schedule of his. Alas do not fret I am here until May! Plenty of time for Pique to get his act together

The following story came to us from a NineMSN Staffer in Australia. It highlights not only why you should pay attention to what you put out there on social media, but also that there are people watching what you Tweet, and put on other social media sites. The USA is very sensitive about security issues, and as the following story shows, even a joke or a throw away line can land you in serious trouble.

Social Media is worldwide. As is true when doing business internationally, when posting on our social media sites, it stands us in good stead to be culturally sensitive, and aware of who may see what we are posting.

By ninemsn staff:

“Two British tourists were stopped from entering the US and held at the airport after they joked on Twitter they were going to “destroy America”.

Leigh Van Bryan, 26, was handcuffed and held in a cell with Mexican drug traffickers for 12 hours after arriving at Los Angeles airport with his 24-year-old friend Emily Bunting last Monday.

Mr Van Bryan had been flagged as a potential danger by the Department of Homeland Security after he tweeted his friend days before he left the UK, the Daily Mail reports.

“Free this week, for a quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America?” he wrote.

But when the pair arrived in the US, they were both detained by armed guards.

US officials ignored the protests of Mr Van Bryan and Ms Bunting, who tried to explain that “destroy” was British slang for “party”.

They were held for five hours on suspicion of planning to “commit crimes” and had their passports taken away.

Van Bryan was also questioned about a separate tweet, in which he quoted US comedy Family Guy.

“3 weeks today, we’re totally in LA p—ing people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin’ Marilyn Monroe up!” he wrote.

Officials searched through their luggage, reportedly looking for spades and shovels, saying Ms Bunting was planning to act as Mr Van Bryan’s look out while he raided Monroe’s tomb.

“It’s just so ridiculous its almost funny but at the time it was really scary. The Homeland Security agents were treating me like some sort of terrorist,” Mr Van Bryan said.

The pair spent 12 hours in separate cells — Mr Van Bryan was locked up with two Mexican drug traffickers — before they were sent home via Paris.

The pair must now apply for visas from the US Embassy in London before flying to America again.”

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A pair of U.K. tourists were arrested after landing in Los Angeles on terror charges after joking on Twitter they were going to ‘destroy America’ and ‘dig up Marilyn Monroe.’

Leigh Van Bryan, 26, was detained last Monday after landing in Los Angeles with his friend, 24-year-old Emily Bunting, according to the British Daily Mail.

Bryan was flagged as a potential threat after tweeting this message about his upcoming trip to Hollywood “@MelissaxWalton free this week for a quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America? x”

Bryan and Bunting told officials the term “destroy” was British slang for “party.” Despite the explanation, they were held on suspicion of planning to commit crimes and their passports were confiscated, the Daily Mail reported.

Bryan was also questioned about another tweet quoting the animated show, “Family Guy:” “3 weeks today, we’re totally in LA p****** people off on Hollywood Blvd and digging Marilyn Monroe up!”

Bryan’s luggage was searched for spades and shovels as a result.

The pair told the Daily Mail they were questioned for five hours, before they were taken to separate holding cells for another 12 hours. They were then put on a plane home via Paris.

“The officials told us we were not allowed in to the country because of Leigh’s tweet. They wanted to know what we were going to do,” Bunting told the Daily Mail. “They asked why we wanted to destroy America and we tried to explain it meant to get trashed and party.”

We just wanted to have a good time on holiday. That was all Leigh meant in his tweet. He would not hurt anyone.”

The Daily Mail says Bryan and Bunting must apply for visas from the U.S. Embassy in London before flying to the U.S. again.

Bryan’s Twitter account has been locked, barring any casual users from seeing his tweets. The account directs all press to contact a spokesman at South West News Service.

“Based on information provided by the LAX Port Authority Infoline – a suspicious activity tipline – CBP conducted a secondary interview of two subjects presenting for entry into the United States,” Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Jenny Burke said in a statement. “Information gathered during this interview revealed that both individuals were inadmissible to the United States and were returned to their country of residence.”

Inadmissability, she said, could include improper travel documents, prohibited activities or intent, smuggling of contraband or prohibited goods or criminal activity or history.

I miss the small bits of British slang I heard tossed about London. I miss walking on the pavement, not the sidewalk. I miss hearing cheers instead of thank you/you’re welcome. I miss going out for a pint, not a beer. I miss preparing for the week-end, not the weekend. I miss the colorful curse words and rampant use of the four letter words Americans frown on (sorry, Mom). I miss saying round instead of around. I miss hearing children say muh-ma and puh-pa. I miss going to the pub. Taking the tube. Walking the High Street. Living in a posh neighborhood. Fancying someone. Going on holiday.

I miss England.

“So, what do you think?”

“Think about what?”

“About the shoe?”

“I think it’s hideous. Who the fuck wears a shoe like that in public?”

“I would.”

“That’s because you’re batshit cray-cray.”

“What is it with you young people and your… speak?”

“You mean our language? Our language is just fine, thank you very much. You, on the other hand, make no fucking sense by wanting to wear that shoe in broad daylight.”

“You don’t understand fashion.”

“Yes, I do understand fashion, and I also understand that that piece of shit should be in the rubbish bin at once.”

“Since when did you become British?”

“Since you got me started on watching British telly.”

“Ok, you need to stop with the slang.”

“No, you CHAV!”

“Do you even know what a chav is?”

“No, but it sounds good!”

“Ugh…”

“You’re so… blah.”

Don’t mind this drabble; this is simply something I felt I needed to do to pass the time.

It sounded funny at the time…

“So why did you call it Bob’s Rants and Raves?” I was asked by a mate the other day. Well I said you are always going on about my “high-horse”. He just smiled.

It made me think what did these two little words mean well below is the answer. I think that they under reflection add together very well to describe exactly how I would wish much of the rubbish that I post on hereto be described.

Having said all that I hope to show I have some nice, kind things to say which will be shown through my desire to understand and adore all things natural from the smallest living things through “Mother Earth” and onto the Universe. So I will find it very difficult to come up with subjects.

Of course my love for Cricket, Rugby and Motor bikes may well have a significant contribution to make; for those who do not like sport stick with it nature will always overcome.

Not a bad day for England against Pakistan – but can we bat?? arr now there’s a question.
