Right off the bat, I want to admit that I find the word underrated to be overrated.  And overrated…well, that’s just…well…that’s overrated, too.  I mean, how can we, as consumers, public viewers, the opinionheads of the country, really know how to gauge the “ratedness” of a particular item/product/etc.  There’s the internet, but that’s only a fraction of the population.  A hefty fraction, but still, you’re leaving out other demographics.  There are box office rates and billboard and award shows and many other outlets that give us, the public, a peak into the majority opinion.  BUT…that still doesn’t determine what is “underrated” or “overrated”.  This opinion often includes those disinclined to go to the movie theater (like myself) and wait for DVD, or those people who don’t buy DVD’s in store – but rather from a street vendor, or get it themselves online.  It’s the same with music.  There are forums and message boards where people from around the world can talk/argue/bullshit about the media around us.  But still, how can you really know what should be considered underrated or overrated?  Some throw these words around, with the meaning behind it their own opinion, rather than everyone elses’.  For example, Johnny may have seen The Dark Knight and couldn’t find one redeeming factor in the duration of the runtime.  But what about the numbers?  It shattered box office records and made millions on top of millions, so Johnny here, would say, “The Dark Knight is overrated.”  It’s a blockbuster, though.  How many people go to the movies to see the blockbusters just because they’re the blockbusters?  I would bet a decent amount.  Then, there’s the hype.  Word of mouth.  People at work talk about Heath Ledger’s performance or Christian Bale’s death-metal-vocalist impersonation, and soon that word travels, and a good chunk of the populace are going to see it.  The movie earns a spot on the biggest moneymakers of all time.  Johnny must feel something here.  He must be thinking, “this movie is overrated”.  It makes sense.  It seems everyone and their mother has gone out to see this movie!  BUT, so has Johnny.  How many Johnny’s are out there?  For every person like me, who enjoyed the hell out of the movie, there’s someone who didn’t take away anything from the viewing.  Therefore, it wouldn’t be fair to call The Dark Knight overrated. 

Then, there’s music.  Like today’s pop music.  I can’t stand it, nor can I find any ounce of talent or heart or soul in the majority of what’s considered popular music today.  All that American Idol, Britney Spears stuff, or the Lil’ Wayne, modern rap stuff.  I see how popular it is, and just think, how overrated?  But once again, for every American Idol-loving person, there’s the opposite, the one like me, wondering what the hell happened to good music?  There’s usually an equal divide.  What’s underrated to one, may be overrated to another.  It’s all based on opinion – where there is no right or wrong.  It’s a touchy subject, therefore I tend to stray away, and worry only about the opinions of myself or the people close to me.

So why name a blog Criminally Underrated when I’m against the word choice altogether?  I’ll tell you why – because I believe it.  Who listens to the Little River Band?  Seriously?  Who?  Aside from the few songs on the radio, who else, besides a tiny portion, could name a Little River Band song?  Maybe the word/phrase I’m searching for is under looked. 

Little River Band is an Australian rock band whose heyday took place in the late 1970’s.  Their biggest hits in the U.S., ranging from 1975 to 1981 included “It’s a Long Way There”, “Lonesome Loser”, “Lady”, and “Reminiscing”, which peaked at # 3, making it their biggest hit.  By 1983, they had lost many of their core band members, including lead vocalist Glenn Shorrock and harmony vocalist/guitarist  Beeb Birtles.  Founding member Graeham Goble stuck with the band throughout the 80’s, trying to keep it fresh and innovative, but this is around the time when the band’s excellence started to decline.  They went for a faster, more aggressive (with the times) sound that just didn’t work for LRB.

I’m not saying they’re the greatest band in the world.  We all know that title is reserved for Tenacious D.  But somewhere between Crosby, Stills and Nash and The Eagles is Little River Band – with their harmonic choruses and smooth arrangements.  They also have a few country-tinged tunes (mostly found on the rare After Hours album which apparently the U.S. record company found “too dark” and had them record a new album which would be Diamantina Cocktail).  However, besides the hits, there are a great number of songs to be heard in the discography of LRB.  The tragic part of the tale is that the Little River Band touring today features no founding members.  It’s basically a cover band.  They played at a festival in my city a year ago, and I opted not to go because of this little fact.  If Shorrock, Birtles or Goble aren’t there, well, I’m not either. 

Now, the reason I call LBR underrated is that I’ve only met a handful of people who’ve actually heard of them.  One of them is my father.  This makes sense – he remembers them from when they were a successful rock band.  But what about now?  Why no resurgence?  You’ll hear younger people talk all day about CSN, The Eagles, Steely Dan, and other countless “classic rock” acts, but why no LRB?  Am I alone in this respect for the band?  Well, if I am alone, then that would certainly justify the title “underrated”.  There are not many forums or message boards where LRB is being discussed on the internet, and literally every record store I’ve been are missing any selection from this band.  Why is that?

Not that I think anyone cares, but I haven’t been around for a while due to school.  I like this blog, and while I may be quiet for a while I don’t think I’ll abandon it.

I haven’t bothered to watch the video because I honestly don’t care.  Britney Spears TM* should have enough money to hire someone that is capable of making a decent music video.  But since she hasn’t hired someone who could make a song and not a soulless piece of hook lines, that could be debatable.  Anyway.

What made me pick this song is that Britney Spears TM sounds like a five year old to me.  Reoccurring through out the song she effects a prepubescent, nasally timber.   She actually seems to have gone backwards in vocal maturity from “Baby One More Time” as that song employed more rich, deeper vocal sounds despite relying on her image as pedo-bait.  This song sounds like she is shrilling into a mic and some highly skilled engineers make a song out of it.

*Not to be confused with Britney Spears the person.  Britney Spears the Trade Mark is the collaborated effort of producers, make up artists, engineers and fat rich white men sitting in office buildings in LA.

New decade New music, Beyonce and Lady Gaga have token over the charts this past year. So don’t expect them to slow dowm for the 2010. Beyonce announced at her final concert in London that she would be reconding a new album for next year Beyonce’World reports. Also mega producer Rodney “Darkchild’ Jerkins also hinted on his twitter that he was working on somthing somthing for the super diva. The Beyonce haters and even some fans thinks she should give it a rest. I think Bey has one more album in her before she steps away from the spotlight at  for a while.

Pop sensation Lady Gaga said in a recent interview

The Fame Monster really is a new album, so I guess it’s kind of my second album, and then I’ll put out a third album I guess next year.”

GaGa will now join Beyonce, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and many others who are due to drop their next albums in 2010.

In the next couple of months I’ll be starting on my third solo album.

I always talk about what I’m going through at the time [on my albums]. The Lady Love album was filled with some of the angry records, the confused records, but it also had the sweet “I Need A U’s” and all of those things, so I’ll try and make another gumbo record, just mix it up. Hopefully I’ll be more in love on the next album!

I Need A U was one of the best songs Of this year. We need more of that please. Really excited for  next year. It’s going to go so hard yall just don’t know.

It’s easy to call Har Mar Superstar, the sexed-up alter-ego of Sean Tillman, a joke, especially compared to his folksy indie band Sean Na Na and old, bass-heavy noise/pop/punk rockers Calvin Krime. A hipster joke between 2002 and 2004, when Fab Moretti of The Strokes was his drummer and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a pre-super icon Beth Ditto appeared on his records, but now just an old joke by a man who doesn’t look as much like porn king Ron Jeremy as he used to.

But that would be unfair, because while Tillman’s lusty electro R&B can sound like his least sincere project, he does know what he’s doing: he’s written songs for J. Lo, Holly Valance appeared on 2004 single ‘DUI’ and has finished sets with faithful R. Kelly covers, although Britney Spears’ management turned down the lead single from Dark Touches, ‘Tall Boy’. It sounds like a Britney song – weird, clicky post-Neptunes/Timbaland electro-pop with Har Mar using the robotic voice she’s actually made her singing voice – but seeing as a ‘tall boy’ is either a beer or a boner it’s understandable that ‘her people’ turned it down (not that she’s shied away from raunchy).

Tillman can sing too, as he shows on bombastic ‘80s synth-pop ‘Sunshine’, with its wiry funk line, even if he can’t hit a falsetto; not for lack of trying on ‘I Got Next’s’ cheap electro and the anti-gangsta ‘Gangsters Want To Cuddle Me’. Most of the time though, he employs MCing that’s worse than amateur to spin grim innuendo (“let me taste your apple sauce”) or unleash streams of nonsense (‘Creative Juices’ references everything from Motley Crue to Streetcar Named Desire).

Despite the flaws, there are fun moments when Har Mar’s crotch isn’t the centre of attention. ‘Dope, Man’ is an upbeat Jackson 5 song reimagined by a sleazy small-time drug dealer, and the feisty punk-funk on ‘Girls Only’ and ‘Turn The Key’ turns down the sex factor. On the final track, Har Mar pledges to “keep our dancefloors burning”, shame he doesn’t do it more often. Originally posted at Die Shellsuit Die!

America’s Next Top Model has featured two shoots heavily inspired by the theme of “Circus”. Cycle 7 saw the models portraying the different characters who are often part of a touring circus.

Cycle 13 saw the models participate in a “Circus” themed shoot – but this time it also featured members of CIRQUE DU SOLEIL – a Canadian entertainment company, self-described as a “dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment.”

I’ve only ever been to the Circus twice in my life.

The first time, I went to see a touring Circus company in my local park and have very few memories of the whole experience as I was young. HOWEVER> I was fortunate enough to go to Las Vegas a few years back and went to see Cirque du Soleil’s “Mystère” at the Treasure Island Hotel. It was insane. I can’t explain how unreal and SURREAL the whole spectacle was. The performers perform like i’ve never seen anyone perform. They are able to move their bodies in ways I didn’t think were possible. They’re the best actors. The best dancers. The most innovative and creative beings. It’s such a journey – seeing their art live. I strongly suggest that all of you check out a Cirque du Soleil show once in your life!

og jeg er fremdeles mett etter veganjulebord. mmm. gløgg og pepperkaker, kaffe og middag med cashewnøttesteik og medisterkaker av TVP og havre og krydderier og søtpotetmos og rotfruktblanding og rødkål og grønn salat med saus til. mmm. mett. to runder. så et par timer med venting og underholdning og så dessert. herregud. mettere enn på lenge lenge. drakk et glass vann på Revolver en time senere. ble mett all over again.

prøvde danse det av meg  litt her og der. på John Olav Nilsen og Gjengen på Rockefeller, der gulvet til slutt gynget av hoppende mennesker, litt på Revolver helt til dansegolvet plutselig gikk fra å være dansbart til å bli fullstappa av mennesker som dyttet oss over på andre siden av rommet før vi helt rakk å registere hva som var i ferd med å skje, så på knøttlille og stortsett stappfulle Robinet. så nachspielfail. vel vel, you can’t win ‘em all. jeg er i det minste blitt en ræser på akustisk versjon av Lucky.må bare øve inn tostemt, så er vi klar for å ta over ethvert nachspiel.

A Sydney Childrens’ Hospital Staffer’s Self-interest Plot to Meet Britney was Foiled by Her Generosity to Young Cancer Survivors

Forget all the lip-sync-ing hype. This week Britney Spears has wowed audiences in Sydney with 67,000 fans attending her four Circus Tour concerts at Acer Arena . After a bumpy start to her Australian Tour, media hype about lip-sync-ing has died down and fans are obviously embracing Brit’s on-stage performances. There was no adverse publicity during her Melbourne or Sydney concerts. Her Brisbane run is set to go, as well as a return performance to Melbourne and a final concert in Adelaide.

Britney Spears is back on the cover of Rolling Stone in a belly-baring t-shirt with a corresponding article in which the pop star is candid about her oh-so-public meltdown. The issue hit stands Thanksgiving week and signaled another step in the right direction for Britney’s return to the top. Britney has recently returned to her signature shade of blonde, and if tabloids are correct in measuring her sanity based on her hair (brooding when brunette, crazy when bald; you get the idea,) then this is another positive step for Spears. The mother of two has been out of the press recently, choosing to spend her time either behind closed doors with her family at her Beverly Hills mansion or in the dance or recording studio diligently preparing for her new album. This is a welcome change from the Spears we saw last year who went from rehab to court, engaging in a vicious custody battle with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, and then involuntarily to psychiatric hospitals—twice! In her cover story with Rolling Stone Spears commented on her quiet life: “I feel like an old person now.

I do! I go to bed at, like, 9:30 every night, and I don’t go out for anything, you know what I mean? I just feel like an old fart!”

In the interview Spears appears to be a version of her former humble, sweet and unassuming self, but the constant media frenzy has undoubtedly hardened the Louisiana native as well. While she sang about her public image in her last hit single “Piece of Me,” which includes the lyrics, “I’m Miss Bad Media Karma/Another day, another drama,” Spears is reluctant to reveal that much of herself on Circus.

The pop star told Rolling Stone, “It’s scary to put yourself out there and be like, ‘Oh, God, is that cool?’ If you’re not going to really go for it, you can’t just go there halfway. But sometimes, when you go for it, you can’t lose.”

The first time Britney Spear graced the cover of the magazine was in 1999, the same year that “Baby One More Time” made her the official teen queen of pop. Clad in skimpy shorts and a bra, the fresh-faced Spears walked a fine line between innocence and scandal in the cover shot and interview, in which she discussed her Baptist faith while defending her choice to wear knee highs and a risqué school girl outfit in her now-famous video.

The following year Spears returned to the cover wearing a leather American-flag ensemble (yes, her famous midriff was showing again) to discuss how her debut record sold nine million copies. In 2002 the quote “Don’t treat me like a little girl” was emblazoned across Britney’s third cover and that same year the trend continued with a more adult Spears, with noticeably more cleavage, discussing her future. Flash-forward a few more covers and years later and the magazine chronicled her demise, but luckily Britney Spears appears to be continuing her ascent back to the top, and when you get your Britney Spears tickets you can see for yourself.

Ubrany jest zawsze bardzo dobrze, widać też, że lubi kolor czerwony, a to, że zamiast w GB urodził się w US wybaczyłam mu już dawno, bo nauczyłam się tego dzięki Antosiowi Rossomando. Niżej „Spaceman”.

W Bałtyckiej już od tygodnia masa świątecznych dekoracji, w telewizji masa świątecznych reklam, a my wciąż przed andrzejkami. Według mnie dopiero w grudniu powinno się to całe świąteczne szaleństwo zaczynać, ale może ja po prostu lubię marudzić. Brak mi wytrwałości, szybko się nudzę i ducha świąt czuję już na początku grudnia, a nie pod koniec. Ale nie no, właśnie zaczyna się najpiękniejszy okres w roku. Chciałabym tylko wyłączyć już Słońce i wrzucić do Kwidzyna trochę śniegu. Lepsze od budzącego rano zachmurzonego nieba jest tylko budzące rano zachmurzone niebo, z którego pada śnieg!

Dużo Eminema ostatnio. Odkąd mam na kompie „Relapse” pozycja albumu „The Marshall Mathers LP” stała się zagrożona i teraz już sama nie wiem, która płyta jest lepsza. Caaała ja. Chociaż „The Way I am” i „The Real Slim Shady” kopią tak cholernie tyłki, że nawet „Must be the Ganja” i „My mom” się chowają.

W związku z promocją singla „3” ekipa Britney wrzuciła do Neta grę, dotyczącą jej teledysków. Jak dla mnie miodzio! http://www.britney.com/us/britney-video-game

Driving in the car with my kids this morning a Miley Cyrus song came on the radio. I started to change the channel and I was verbally attacked. “STOP!” they cried, “We LIKE that song!” I turned to my daughter, age 17, surely a voice of reason. “Seriously?” I asked her. I mean, I get #1son and #2son liking it. It’s pop music and they’re 5 and 6. “Yeah,” she said to me with a look that said she was more than ready to defend her position.

I don’t get it. And quite frankly, I’ve never gotten it. Even way back in the day of Fleetwood Mac. I loved Fleetwood Mac. But Stevie Nicks? Her voice sounds like a cigar smoking chipmunk to me. (Uh-oh. I just lost a few readers I fear.   Thanks for stopping by!) When I hear her version of Silent Night on the album “A Very Special Christmas” it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me. How dare she massacre such a sacred song?

But then, I liked Rush. And Geddy Lee’s vocal quality isn’t exactly pure. Or Janis Joplin. Or Kim Carnes. Or Bon Scott of AC/DC. Even Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles had a touch of that chipmunk quality. But I could listen to her without cringing. What was it about Stevie Nicks that bothered me so? And what was the secret to her mass appeal?

And then along came Britney Spears. My daughter was in early grade school when Britney first hit the pop charts. I predicted her a teeny bopper flash in the pan. Whoops! I did it again.  I couldn’t have been more wrong. Another nasal voiced chipmunk dressed (or not dressed as the case may be) up as a credible pop singer. I just don’t get it.

I began formulating this post in my mind in the car. When I sat down to the computer to type I saw this article on msn.com. Evidently the Aussie’s are in an uproar because Britney Spears dared to lip sync her concert. I’m sorry. But ever since you could lip sync and get away with it pop stars have been doing it. Now the article I’m referring to actually brings up the Milli Vanilli debacle – but I’m not talking about lip syncing to someone else’s voice. I’m talking about lip syncing to your best recording or the one of your voice that been washed, scrubbed and tweaked in every way digitally possible to bring forth a version that is palpable to the ear. To some.

Music through the decades is a very interesting subject to me. I could spin 100 posts on the subject. But what interests me today is the highly marketable yet audibly marginal voices you hear on the radio. On American Idol last season (yes, I watch, unashamed) there are episodes when highly established pop singers perform. They sing live – as the contestants do. If you follow the program I’m remembering when Lady Ga Ga appeared. (I still giggle every time I hear that ridiculous stage name) She was horrible. Every AI finalist left at that point in the show had a better voice than she did. What is her appeal?

I’m not saying you need a PhD like Brian May of Queen or be an esteemed alum of the Juilliard School. Let’s try this. Let’s celebrate singers that can actually sing. Let’s honor people who have honed their craft and not simply covered themselves in glitter and called themselves a star. I could do that. We all could. When I turn on the radio I want to hear good music. Not the manufactured tones of a souped up studio mimed by a made up kewpie doll.
