My journey with music has been one of significantly less wanderlust than other hobbies and interests of mine. Sure, my brother used to call me “The Human Jukebox” for being able to recite just about any hit song’s lyrics in full on command, but that didn’t mean my taste in music was varied. Pop music has dominated my musical interaction since my very first walkman.

My first audio cassette was the soundtrack to “The Sound of Music” which I adored. Apart from this, my ears were pretty much limited to whatever my parents played with their fancy new CD player. This means I grew up with the likes of CCR, Buddy Holly, Madonna, The Top Gun soundtrack and Bryan Adams. I was still trying to figure out a common thread among the limited music that happened to reach me. The only thing I knew for sure was that music could inspire feelings of elation. There were enough dance parties in the living room to make the connection between catchy music and happy times.

By the time I got my very first boom box (oh yeah), I was completely taken with Alanis Morrissette. I think I can define a whole year of my musical past with “Jagged Little Pill”. I remember coming home from school and listening to that album from start to finish. This daily musical ritual was complete with lip syncing, my mirror reflection and various dance moves to reenact my nine-year-old self’s understanding of the rather mature subject matter. Take “You Oughta Know” for example. “I’m here to remind you of the mess you left when you went away” translated to a wagging finger, outstretched arms and a look of utter disapproval. Before Alanis graced my CD collection, my musical taste was driven by positive feelings. Alanis opened up the world of musical poetry for me: lyrics. And they didn’t have to be happy to be great.

After some brief affairs with Amanda Marshall, Jewel and a slightly longer one with Celine Dion, I was introduced to a group of girls who told me that if I wanted to be their lover, I would have to get with their friends. This brilliant marketing team sold themselves into the hearts of 10-year-olds everywhere. I look back on my time with the Spice Girls with fondness… They promoted “girl power” and the importance of friendship and even brought my friends and I to our elementary school stage in the Talent Show. A couple memories that stand out in my mind include my friend bribing me with an Emma Bunton snap shot to watch “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and my refusal to throw out Chupa Chup lollipop wrappers that boasted images of the fab 5. My mom’s eventual submission to my request for the most hideous white platform shoes and my subsequent bliss is a memory I will not soon forget.

It’s hard for me to count this as one of my musical milestones because I feel as though the marketing technique implemented on my impressionable young self was more responsible for the album purchases than the actual songs themselves. That being said, if their songs were one thing, it was catchy – something I was no stranger to.

The last performer that would achieve obsessive status in my life is still unrivalled. From the moment “Baby, One More Time” hit pop radio, I was hooked. I still remember staying up late in hopes of catching it with cassette tape and finger on the record button ready. Catching that song for future plays was a feeling of intense elation that is hard to come by.

Since her first single to her latest album, I’ve been there, though my commitment to the purchase of her albums has more to do with loyalty than taste at this point. Britney Spears will always have a special place in my heart, but again, I think my engagement with her content had more to do with the packaging than the material. Her lyrics never brought me to tears, never inspired reflection but MAN did they ever get in your head. To this day, when I hear a Britney song, my 13-year-old mentality comes flooding back and the seriousness with which I mimic her reservoir of classic dance moves remains the same. It always will.

Since that time, my musical experience has been more or less limited to Top 40. A relatively substantial interest in singing meant I spent a lot of my time belting songs by artists I felt I could imitate vocally, rather than merely listening to tracks on my ipod like so many of my friends. I would defend pop music with a fierce determination saying things like “creme of the crop” and “it’s popular for a reason”. While I maintain these ideas to a certain extent and see NO issue with enjoying some Biebs, I have grown to decipher between the artist and the performer and the value of the former over the latter.

The musical influences listed above are exceptions to my listening habits. Listening to an entire album is a relatively new concept for me. I overestimated the media’s ability to provide me with the “top” songs of any given album and underestimated the value of experiencing this work of art as it was meant. As a collection. As a story.

I had always been a proponent of experiencing art in its original form and trying to eliminate potential influences. I would object to any alterations of a dish presented to me, fighting for the right of the dish to stand alone as the chef intended. I would refuse to watch movie trailers for fear of their influence on my perception. I never realized the disservice I was doing to music.

And then there was Keane.

And then there was MUSE.

I think these two deserve their own post. Suffice it to say I changed my ways. The depth of engagement with these bands surpasses anything I ever experienced with my previous musical paramours. These guys broke my fear of commitment. And I think I’m in love.

By now you’re surely familiar with Britney’s fairly Britney-less “Scream and Shout,” where, with the exception of backup vocals and a few lines delivered in a faux-British accent, she’s basically been reduced to an android-like sound bite. This is fine by me, since 1) the song owns, and 2) all of our pop stars are robots anyway (paging Rihanna). As long as she continues hitching her wagon to the likes of will.i.am or his ilk, Brit will be sitting pretty.

But let’s turn our attention to the remix. Of course, a pop song of this caliber couldn’t be left alone — Waka Flocka Flame, Weezy, and most unfortunately of all, Diddy, have piled on in this slower reworking. The result is the aural equivalent of mixing all your paint colors together: muddy, purplish, and generally repellent. We lose all of the fun swagger of the original in favor of nearly six minutes of gratuitous cursing and shouts of “YOLOOOOOO” that make me murderous. The lesson here? Sometimes you shouldn’t mess with a good thing. Also, Diddy: just stop. God.

A marketing professor with his whole class were screaming their heads off as they were running out of their class. It is believed that the Koloronopi monster somehow showed up in class. The emergency alarm was triggered alarming students to evacuate the building. The marketing professor was so worried if the Koloronopi Monster would hurt any of the students or even himself. “When I saw the Koloronopi Monster the first thing I thought about was my family and if I would be able to see them again or not.”, the professor said.
