Starring : Eric Lasalle,Brittany Murphy and Bruce Davison.
Loved the Impending doom of whole movie.
Truly a roller coaster of terror,” Will the ground/road hold up as I drive or run?”
The effects are great,really.
Watching this film on SY FY channel,Was probably fun…But the dvd has all kind of extras and really needs to be noticed.
Eric Lasalle(ER) steals the film,In a good way with such an honest and true character.
Bruce Davison (Knight Rider) really plays these distinguished leaders well,Didnt mention “Mad Scientist” once !
Brittany Murphy has a challenge ahead of her as a Sy Fy Heroine,’nuff said.
The best scenes are of Brittany’s Husband and Daughters journey to safety and Eric’s scenes of trying to save his mother( We can all relate to this endeavor).

The Dead Girl (2007) directed by Karen Moncrieff stars Toni Collette as Arden, Piper Laurie as Arden

The Dead Girl (2007) directed by Karen Moncrieff stars Toni Collette as Arden, Piper Laurie as Arden’s mother, Giovanni Ribisi (Rudy), Rose Byrne (Leah), James Franco (Derek), Bruce Davidson (Leah’s father), Mary Steenburgen (Leah’s mother), Brittany Murphy (Krista) Josh Brolin (Tarlow), Kerry Washington (Rosetta), Marcia Gay Harden (Melora).

This is a very complicated and carefully told story that unfolds in five chapters. It starts when Arden finds the body of a dead girl in a field in the rural landscape where she lives with her mother. Arden tells the police and becomes a local celebrity which leads to her being asked out on a date by Rudy who works in a grocery store. Arden is played beautifully as someone who is caught in a stifling and cruel relationship with her ailing mother. She breaks free from that and leaves with Rudy.

The next chapter shows Leah, the morgue attendant who is living with the pain of a missing sister, and the effects of that. The story here is about how the various family members are trying to deal with having had the older daughter gone missing without any resolution. They don’t know if she is alive or dead and they don’t know what happened to her. Leah, who is deeply depressed, just wants it all to be over. Through a series of circumstance she believes the dead girl is her sister and that almost frees her until she finds out she was wrong.

The third chapter deals with a woman whose husband goes away on long road trips and the infected, seriously twisted relationship between husband (Nick Searcy) eventually leads to the wife discovering a storage locker where her absentee husband keeps trophies in the form of bloody clothes and jewellery and things of that nature. The wife (Mary Beth Hurt) understands that her husband is a killer and she has to deal with that knowledge somehow.

The fourth chapter shows the mother of the dead girl, Melora (Marcia Gay Harden) trying to understand what happened to her daughter, finding out where she lived, that she worked as a prostitute and that she has a daughter. She works through all this and decides to take care of her granddaughter.

The last chapter shows the dead girl herself, Krista, and her last day. She comes across as a damaged soul in a lot of ways, but she is also stronger than you would think at a first glance, and the viewer gets to see some of that too.

It’s so rare to see a film that actually features women in this way. We’re talking beautiful talent, skilled work and honed dialogue showing actual women as opposed to Barbie dolls, with hard choices to make portrayed with all the depth and fullness that these wonderful ladies are capable of. That alone makes this worth watching. In some ways they are all victims and they all rise above, change their lives and move through the world as best they can.

It’s told in inverted order and without sentimentalism. It’s absolutely fascinating and gut-clenching to watch a performance like Mary Beth Hurts and seeing her make the wrong choice, seeing how poisoned her thinking is from what must be a long and deeply infected relationship. It is a movie about human interaction and all the ways in which women can get caught in bad circumstance just as much as it is a movie about a murder.

Complex, intelligent and completely engrossing without any kind of moral soapbox action this movie gives the manifold leading ladies a chance to show their skills.

How did this movie not win more awards?

STANDPOINT

While I’m not writing this blog or reading a book or doing something of a social nature or whatever the hell else I feel like, I am a bartender. I like being a bartender. I like serving drinks, talking to people and making them laugh. It’s important to like what you do. For those of you out there who don’t like your chosen occupation, get out while you still can. That’s my advice to you. So there.

In any case, there’s one aspect of bartending that grates on my fucking nerves – listening to people drone on and on about something that matters so little to everyone everywhere and no one yet realizes it.

Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of pointless nonsense about one subject in particular. You see, I bartend in a little town called Skippack. Down the road a ways is a slightly-larger, but no more important, town named Collegeville, cleverly because of the fact Ursinus College is located within it.

But nowadays, no one’s talking about Ursinus. To be fair, it’s likely they weren’t anyway. Nevertheless, there’s only one thing everyone wants to talk about no matter what: the grand opening of the Wegmans, a supermarket that, apparently, has the ability to capture the collective consciousness of everyone within a 45-minute drive.

It’s all anyone can talk about. So automatically I hate it. In general, I have a problem with anything that no one has a problem with. That’s mainly my problem with almost everything.

Here’s the thing. I don’t want to talk about a place you can go to buy food. (a) I’m not particularly dazzled by recollections of an, until now, never before seen selection of cheese. Also, (b) I’m not entirely impressed by the fact there’s a pub inside a supermarket. In addition, (c) I’m not remotely interested in the largest selection of seafood in the area. (These three things, by the way, are almost always offered as the main reasons one would ever go to Wegmans, although not the only ones.)

Granted, I am a single, 35-year old male (temporarily) living in an area greatly overpopulated with parents and children. For parents, it is a unique opportunity to provide for your family and afford yourself a few drinks while doing it, instead of having to wait to get home, unload the groceries, make dinner and put the kids to bed before opening a bottle of wine, or four, and get your buzz on. I am not ignorant of this fact. As I’ve been more exposed to parents as an adult, I’ve figured out that good parenting is directly proportionate to the amount of weekly alcohol consumption. It wasn’t that way when I was growing up but that’s the way it is now. At least, for the most part. Not saying all you parents out there are getting bombed every night. But a lot of you are. I can’t blame you. If I were a parent, I would probably be within your ranks.

In any case, hearing people swap stories about their first (and second and third) trip to Wegmans is about as depressing a level of converation that can be reached.

I refuse to participate.

So I’m not going. Even it means never talking to anyone again. Or, at least, until I move downtown in January. Then, I’ll have to talk to all the single folks about how fresh everything at Whole Foods seem to be. But, somehow, it doesn’t seem like it’ll suck half as much.

QUOTATION

The weirder you’re going to behave, the more normal you should look. It works in reverse, too. When I see a kid with three or four rings in his nose, I know there is absolutely nothing extraordinary about that person. → P.J. O’Rourke

TUNE

Sometimes, all it takes is a killer line in a song to make listen to it about 93 times – over and over. Such is the case with Mike Doughty’s tune, “I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress To Keep On Dancing.” It’s a good and quick song that features the line, “I’ll assess the essence of the mess…” Not sure why I like that so much. But I do. And that’s that.

GALLIMAUFRY

→ If you haven’t seen the video footage of University of New Mexico’s women’s soccer player, Elizabeth Lambert, you should. This chick is so completely crazy, I’m surprised I’ve never dated her.

→ Just want to officially thank the Philadelphia Phillies for coming oh-so-very-close to winning back-to-back World Series. I know the whole organization has been waiting for me to weigh in. Once again, I will state Philadelphia is a “baseball town.” I will keep saying that until everyone believes it. Because it’s the truth.

→ In a world gone mad, sometimes I read some news that alleviates all the numbness and actually allows me to feel again. The fact Steven Tyler has officially left Aerosmith was not that kind of news. I’m sure there’s a large group of people out there who care when a middle-aged singer leaves a band that hasn’t contributed anything musically solid in decades. I’m just not a member of that group.

After a really stressful week, I decided to browse Netflix’s recommendation list. One movie poster I noticed was for “The Ramen Girl” starring Brittany Murphy dressed in a kimono sitting in a very awkward position. This film has been rotating in my queue for quite a while, so I thought I would give it a shot. What’s with the name “Ramen Girl?” It has everything to do with the movie: Girl + Ramen.

Before I get into the movie review, here’s a brief history of ramen noodles and the introduction of the dish into Japan.

Ramen (ラーメン, らーめん, 拉麺 ) is a Japanese noodle dish that originated in China. From the research I’ve done, there wasn’t an exact time period when this dish was introduced in Japan. Ramen is served in meat or fish-based broth flavored with miso or soy sauce. Some of the ingredients include kombu (kelp), katsuobushi (skipjack tuna flakes) niboshi (dried baby sardines), beef bones, shiitake mushrooms, onions and sometimes corn.

Ramen became increasingly popular in Japan during the early 20th century. In 1958 instant noodles was invented by Momofuku Ando, the Taiwanese-Japanese founder of Nissin Foods. There’s even a ramen museum in Yokohama called the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum. It’s used in the film as a place where Brittany Murphy’s love interest takes her. In Japan, high-end ramen restaurants are called izakayas (ramen-ya). These are popular places where there can be 10-20 seats at a bar or three tables.

“The Ramen Girl” is about, Abby, a spoiled American who rushes to live in Tokyo with her boyfriend. He leaves her alone in Tokyo because he’s a “traveller and he’s not feeling the relationship.” Not sure what to do next, Abby finds solace in a neighborhood ramen shop, unable to speak any Japanese. She works in a law firm as a copywriter and she is barely given any work to do. She sees the ramen shop as her sign to begin her long journey as a ramen chef.

She begs the old chef to train her, but he is not a delight to work with. He makes her clean everything, including the barely non-existent toilet in the restaurant. The two are complete opposites, which make for hilarious moments during the film. She stomps her feet and yells at him while he calls her an “idiotic girl” in Japanese. Eventually, she works her way up to learning how to make broth (boiled with a pig’s head) and chop ingredients.

Like all typical romantic comedies, Abby is not going to be left alone. She meets a Japanese-Korean businessman played by Sohee Park. He’s very attractive and helps play off some of the more ridiculous moments of the film.

I thought the film was worth watching and perfect for wanting something light. It’s very predictable, but what chick flicks aren’t? There were a few times when I wondered why the director included specific scenes in the film. For example, Abby is letting customers take sips of her ramen soup. She was told by the chef’s mother she needs to “feel the ramen” and to “let the spirit guide her.” (It sounds like something out of “Star Wars.”) Abby uses her sadness and tears as her spirit guide to making the perfect bowl of ramen. Everyone at the table begins to burst out in tears because one probably will never get married and an older woman is upset due to her husband not having sexual relations with her for 15 years. (That’s a bummer.) This entire scene seemed out-of-place and strange.

Overall, it was a very simplistic chick flick, but worth the watch. It’s funny to watch the chef yell at Abby in Japanese and her trying to cope with her minor linguistic skills. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of ramen because I’ve only had the instant noodles one can buy in the supermarket. After watching Brittany Murphy prepare it in the film, I’ll have to give it a second try.

Do you not know what Megafault is? Don’t worry. Until this morning, neither did I, but now I do, and it’s time to spread the gospel. People, this is Megafault:

Without so much as a trailer, the first thing that occurred to me was that I really need to put Brittany Murphy on Google alert. Between this and The Ramen Girl, I’m beginning to suspect that any movie starring Brittany Murphy is a film destined bad movie excellence. Coming from the producers that brought us Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and originally airing on SyFy are just shitshow icing on the train wreck cake. Seriously, I need only this bargain bin DVD cover to know that this movie’s destined for greatness.

Of course, saying that would discount the Megafault trailer, which is a whole new realm of terrible I never actually believed attainable:

Erm. Wow. Just wow.

There are bad B-movies, and there are deliberately bad B-movies, and then there’s the totally scientifically plausible movie about a massive fault that threatens to rip the world in half that stars a rather haggard looking Brittany Murphy and features this quip:

What’re you gonna do? Declare war on an earthquake?

Basically what I’m saying is that Megafault is a profound work of art. And the work of a serious auteur:

Et tu, 2012?

Happy Feet (2006)
★★ / ★★★★

An emperor penguin named Mumble (Elijah Wood) was born without a knack for singing, but his talent lies in tapdancing. His colony, aside from his childhood friend (Brittany Murphy) and mother (Nicole Kidman), doesn’t like the fact that he’s different and one of the oldest penguins believe that Mumble was a curse because ever since he was born, food became more scarce. (Talk about correlation does not mean causation.) Determined to prove that his tapdancing has nothing to do with the famine, Mumble, his short penguin friends and Noah the Elder (Hugo Weaving) went on a journey to search for the “aliens” (they were actually humans but they didn’t have the term for it) and kindly ask them through whatever means to stop taking their food. I like children’s movies but I hated the singing and dancing in this movie. I believe those elements took away some of the power (and time) to produce a well-developed story. The message about the humans’ destruction and disruption of the food chain was apparent but there were far too many extended singing and dancing sequences. (And it didn’t help that they weren’t that great to watch or listen to.) My favorite parts in the picture were the scenes that involved real danger for the penguins, such as being chased by a hungry seal, killer whales and birds. Yes, the animation was nothing short of spectacular but it doesn’t make up for its too light a tone about death and destruction. There were definitely some darker moments, especially in the second half when Mumble reached “heaven,” but I felt like George Miller, the director, could have pushed the envelope a little further by showing the audiences certain realities. After all, the point of the picture was the show that animals in the South Pole were struggling for survival. In fact, I think this film would have been far superior if it had ended in a bittersweet tone instead of a typical living-happily-ever-after note. Having said all that, I would have been harsher with this film if it was not intended for children. Given its flaws, it was still pretty entertaining because it had other messages such as tolerance, self-esteem and true friendships.
