The famous Brno Christmas market starts today. After years of bummer and bad reputation, the Mayor promised this year should be different.

For years the market was operated by a private company which could dictate the product categories to be sold in the wooden “huts” on the main square. People wanted traditions and the Christmas spirit, but many of the huts sold pyjamas, cheap underwear and other junk.

The city government argued that it had practically no control over the products. It became apparent that the municipality had concluded  a bad contract and there was no way to back out of it and almost all citizens of Brno had to wait for the contract to expire.

Húú, jó régen nem írtam, itt csak zajlanak az események, és nincs időm semmire!

Őszintén szólva, az utóbbi időben (a bulikon és mindennapi ilyen-olyan programokon kívül) nem történt semmi extra. Most a nyugis időszak van, már kb kialakult, kikkel töltöm a szabadidőmet, mik a programok. Persze még most is ismerek meg új embereket, de azért már egy összeszokott társaság vagyunk. Főleg portugálokkal vagyok, finnekkel, görögökkel, franciákkal, spanyolokkal. Nagyon jó érzés nagyon sok embert ismerni. És itt tényleg mindenki nagyon rendes és jófej.

Szóval már teljesen megszoktam az ittlétet, és persze kezd egy kis rossz érzésem is előjönni, mert már csak 4 hét van hátra… Igazából annyit tudok mondani, hogy az Erasmus szerintem az egyik legjobb dolog, ami valaha is történhet az emberrel. És ezt én mondom, aki mindigis ódzkodott az ilyen hosszú távú “nemotthonlétektől”!!…

Na jó, a sok lelkizés után, elmesélem, hogy mint a címben is láthatjátok, ismét látogatóm volt, Balázzsal egy nagyon kellemes hétvégét töltöttünk el Prágában. Hmm, már nagyon hiányzott! Prága amúgy nagyon szép! Budapesttel ellentétben nagyon koncentrált a belvárosa, minden, amit egy turistának érdemes megnéznie, gyalogszerrel megjárható útvonal. Főleg este nagyon szép volt. Egyébként teljesen tele volt, annyi turista volt, hogy néha alig lehetett megmozdulni az utcákon!!

…said the Mayor of the City of Brno Roman Onderka to his Deputy Martin Ander during a session of the City Council, the iDNES.cz news server wrote…

The two politicians are coalition partners. Onderka is a social democrat and Ander is from the Green Party. Ander sought explanation from the Mayor how come a former municipal police officer who was found guilty of battery works for the MP again – as a civilian. Normally employees of the municipal police must have a clean criminal record. The exchange between the two politicians resulted in the insult… Here is how the Mayor explained himself…

In every relationship, there comes a time when you have to express your feelings in two or three words. A mayor is not made of stone, he has a heart and feelings.

However, according the another Deputy Mayor, Daniel Rychnovsky (Christian Democrats) the city coalition is like “a married couple who fight a lot but decide not to get a divorce for the sake of their children”. The local elections are scheduled to take place in June 2010.

If you ask me, I have nothing against these words in politics, if they are used under similar circumstances (face-to-face exchange). Sticks and stones… Mayors can have secret girlfriends and they can use the F-word from time to time, provided they pay attention to ordinary local issues, as they are required to…

According to authorities, it is most likely a matter of weeks. So far there are only a few hundred confirmed cases of the “swine flu” in the Czech Republic, most of them “mild”.

Institutions, movie theaters and even schools would remain open to the extent possible, because “healthy” children can not stay at home and ill children for whom their parents don’t  find babysitting would go to daycare centres anyway. “Closing down schools is not a measure to prevent or resolve pandemic,” public hygiene office head says.

People are buying out face masks but they haven’t started wearing them, yet…

Moreover, many people have recently caught the “regular” flu, which is unusual, because the numbers of patients with the regular flu usually increase in February, not November…

Megvolt a bajuszbuli is, és igen, készültek képek is! A bulit egyébként egy lakásban rendezték meg, mert van pár Erasmus-os, aki nem a koliban, hanem bent a városban lakik. A lakás egyébként egy „nemcseh” számára kiejthetetlen nevű utcában van, ezért kitalálták, hogy elnevezik a lakást Guatemala-nak.

Szóval a bajuszbuli Guatemala-ban volt múlt hét szerdán:

Some people in Tesco probably think that the first company or store that reminds people of the upcoming Christmas will win the most customers and have them spend money. Tesco in downtown Brno put up Christmas decorations this week, i.e. almost two months before the Christmas Eve and one month “before winter”.

The store even has a TREE in the lobby.

This particular store is an old-fashioned department store. It has aisles with Tupperware next to groceries or underwear. The goods are usually “no name” and the atmosphere is absolutely terrible… Especially the clothes are hideous…

Be it as it may, having a Christmas tree in late October is ridiculous. Of course, it is a business strategy but in terms of holidays and observances it totally destroys the spirit…

There are two ranches in villages in the northern part of Brno that are in fact Brno boroughs. Both of them are departure points for hiking trails. One of the ranches is in Oresin and one in Sobesice.

The “CH” Ranch is the one in Oresin. It offers horseback riding lessons and it has its own restaurant. It is located on a hill overlooking Brno and it can easily be reached on foot (a paved road) from the number 70 bus terminus. The fee is CZK 300 per hour (Oct 2009).

Panska licha is the one in Sobesice, or between the boroughs of Sobesice and Lesna. Unlike the CH Ranch, Panska licha is also a club. It is significantly larger and it has huge meadows. Also part of the facility is a three-star hotel and restaurant. It can be reached by the bus number 57.

Unfortunately, it seems like employees of the ranches and horse owners like to use the marked hiking trails for their rides, so people (mostly families, as these trails are very easy even for children) must constantly watch where they are going…

There is a very interesting building in the borough of Obrany. It is located right next to the Svitava River and across the street from a tram terminus, downtown Brno is a 15-minute ride…

I am sure there is a reason why no construction developer has turned the ruin into a trendy apartment building. Let’s start with the overall condition, which of course can be improved. But then there is the issue of heating, it is a well-known fact that rooms of this size are hard and expensive to heat, considering the technologies used in this country. Moreover, floods are also an issue…

When it comes to lofts, experts argue that the target group (potential buyers) is also relatively small… these people would have to have the millions to invest and the guts to accept some aspects of life in such a house at the same time. I might be wrong but it seems to me that in the U.S. loft apartments are for singles — and once they have families or babies, they move into a picket-fenced suburb house. It would not work the same way here…

I think there is only one project when a former factory has been turned into an apartment building: the Moravan project (a former textile factory, I think…). Most of the units are small studios, or one-bedroom apartments… (more information on this project coming up…)

Újra itt vagyok, friss élményekkel!!

Azóta volt a magyarországi prezentáció, amiről ha minden igaz, láthattok egy képet idelent. Sajna csak ez az egy kép készült, és őszintén szólva, állandóan elfelejtem magammal vinni a fényképezőgépet, de ígérem, mostantól igyekezni fogok!

Szóval a prezentáció nagyon jól sikerült, bemutattuk Budapestet, Balatont és meséltünk a Hortobágyról. Igazi magyar ételek, és híres magyarok a nagyvilágban! Ja, és még megmutattuk, mi mindent találtak fel a magyarok. Nagy volt a hüledezés! De jól sikerült, élveztük nagyon.

Aznap volt a Management prezentációm is. A krízismenedzsmentről tartottam előadást. Nagyon jól sikerült ez is, a tanár elismerően bólogatott, úgyhogy teljesen megnyugodtam, és az angol sem volt gáz…

Persze aznap este jól megünnepeltük a történteket, azt hiszem valamikor reggel 7 körül értem haza. Másnap is buliztunk, mert csütörtök este rendezték meg AZ Erasmus bulit. Ennek keretében mindhárom Brnoi egyetemről összehívták az összes Erasmus-os diákot, szóval nagyon sokan voltunk. Ez is kicsit sokáig tartott…

A héten nem nagyon történt még semmi, óráim nem is voltak, mert ma nemzeti ünnep van. Ma este pedig Halloween- party lesz, amire kötelező bajuszt viselni. Hm. (Igen, igen, megpróbálok képeket készíteni!)

Ez az időszak most nem nagyon szól másról, mint az állandó bulikról, de hát ez is benne van az Erasmus-ban. A suliban legközelebb kb. két hét múlva fog érdemleges dolog történni…

Amúgy már teljesen megszoktam az ittlétet, egyre több embert ismerek. Nagyon jó érzés menni az utcán, és kb. minden ötödik emberrel megállni beszélgetni. (…mert ismerem őket )

Az időm legnagyobb részét egyébként a portugál barátnőmmel, Marlene-nel töltöm, aki nagyon jól beszél angolul, így állandóan tanulok tőle.

A hétvégén tervezzük páran, hogy elkirándulunk Prágába. Még nem voltam, és nagyon kíváncsi vagyok. Szóval valószínűleg ott leszek péntektől vasárnapig.

No, megpróbálom beszúrni ide ezt a képet magamról, hogy lássátok, milyen ügyesen fogom a mikrofont, és milyen jókedvem van!!

Tjekkerne er katolikker, og et temmelig religiøst folkefærd.

Tjekkiske muslimer i byen Brno vil gerne bygge en stormoské. En moské, som ifølge næstformand for den muslimske menighed i byen, Jalal Atassi, størrelsesmæssigt passer til antallet af muslimer i byen og til de aktiviteter, som muslimerne gerne vil stå for.

– Den eksisterende moské opfylder ikke længere vores behov. Den er for lille. Vi har ikke plads nok til folk ved bøn, og vi har ikke egnede lokaler til de aktiviteter, vi gerne vil arrangere, fortæller Jalal Atassi.

Muslimerne i Brno råder på nuværende tidspunkt over en mindre moské. Moskéen, en hvid bygning med grønne søjler og arabiske påskrifter på facaden, ligger i gaden Videnska i udkanten af Brnos centrum. Den er bygget for 11 år siden, og allerede dengang var der en stor debat om, hvorvidt muslimerne skulle have lov til at bygge en moské i byen. Der er på nuværende tidspunkt ingen konkrete planer om, hvordan den nye stormoské skal se ud, men allerede nu er planerne stødt på protester.

– Jeg respekterer retten til religionsfrihed, men er generelt meget foruroliget over nogle af muslimernes krav. Tolerance må ikke være ensbetydende med naivitet, siger næstformand for det kristendemokratiske parti KDU-CSL David Macek og henviser til publikationer udgivet af Det Muslimske Fællesråd i Tjekkiet, blandt andet bogen “Islam og sekularisering”.

– Forfatteren siger, at islam har sine egne love, som er vigtigere end samfundets love. Jeg mener ikke, at vi skal give plads til trossamfund med den type budskaber. Vi skal ikke gentage de samme fejl, som man har gjort i Vesteuropa. Jeg er helt klart imod en stormoské i Brno, siger han.

Halihó!

Újra itt vagyok! Eltelt majdnem egy hét, és már egész sok minden történt velem.

Kezdem a sulival. A tantárgyak nagyon jók, érdekesek lesznek. Van két kiemelten jó, a Management és a Quality Management, amiket még nem tanultam ilyen részletesen otthon, szerintem ezek nagyon hasznosak lesznek. Meghívtak külföldi egyetemekről is vendégelőadókat, és találkozni fogunk vállalatvezetőkkel is.

Nagyon örülök, mert mindent értek, amit mondanak a tanárok. Az angolomat azért még kell finomítani, sajnos még nem annyira gördülékeny, és választékos, de rajta vagyok!

Az emberek nagyon kedvesek. Főleg Erasmus-os diákokkal vagyok, portugálokkal, spanyolokkal, görögökkel, franciákkal, finnekkel. Még nem ismerek sok embert, de minden nap egyre több emberrel ismerkedem meg.

Az esték elég változatosak, van, hogy csak a kollégiumban maradunk és összegyűlünk főzni valahol vagy beszélgetni, de be is szoktunk menni a belvárosba bulizni. Egyébként nagyon nagyon hideg van, ezért sokan nem szeretnek kimozdulni. Sokan viszont már nagyon várják a telet, mert pl. a spanyolok és a portugálok között van olyan, aki még soha életében nem látott havat! hát majd meglátják.

Minden szerdán összegyűlik az összes Erasmus-os, és megnézünk egy-egy prezentációt, amit mindenkinek a saját országáról kell tartania. Az idő előrehaladtával egyre vadabb és érdekesebb prezentációk születnek, vannak, akik komplett show-és kvízműsort rendeznek. Most szerdán mi jövünk Magyarországgal, valami nagyon jót kell kitalálnunk! egy magyar fiú van még itt velem. Ezután mindig Erasmus-os buli van egy Remix nevű helyen a városban. Nem nagyon különbözik bármelyik budapesti szórakozóhelytől, mondjuk a Morrison’s-hoz tudnám hasonlítani. Tegnap este egy másik helyen voltam, a Livingstone-ban, ahol annyi ember volt, hogy mozdulni sem lehetett… de nagyon jó buli volt! az éjjeli közlekedés nagyon jól megoldott, az éjjeli busz közvetlenül a kollégium előtt tesz le.

Az árakról: minden nagyon olcsó. három „menza” (étterem-jellegű) van itt a kollégium és az egyetem környezetében. 400-500 Ft-ból (40-50 CZK) szoktam megebédelni üdítővel együtt. Egyébként a belvárosi éttermekben sem vészesek az árak, egy tál étel itallal kijön kb. 150 CZK-ból. A szórakozóhelyeken a sör kb. 20 CZK, a belépők 50 CZK körül vannak, de szerencsére nekünk pár jobb helyen ingyenes, mert kaptunk egy hallgatói kártyát az egyetemen.

A hétvégén egyébként nem nagyon buliznak az itteniek, amit nem nagyon értek, pl. szombaton nincs semmi, a szórakozóhelyek üresek. A bulinapok a szerda és a péntek. Legalábbis ezt mondják, akik már kb. egy hónapja itt vannak. Ma nem hiszem, hogy megyek valahova, mert szerdán már prezentálnom kell Management-ből, és készülök rá.

Szóval, most eddig ezek történtek. Nagyon jó itt, a kollégiumi létet is kezdem megszokni, egész vicces tud lenni.

Majd jelentkezem! És legközelebb igyekszem képeket is csatolni az eseményekhez!

For decades the main square in Brno is the place where the city’s Christmas tree is erected. This year citizens of Brno may choose among four trees the one they like the most. They can vote on the website of the Tourist Information Centre – whether they like tree number 1, tree number 2, tree number 3 or tree number 4. The deadline is November 15.

Speaking of winter, it is only October 12 but according to the most recent weather forecast it should SNOW today… damn.

Halihó Mindenki!

Megérkeztem Brno-ba! Igaz, már péntek óta itt vagyok, Balázzsal bejártuk a várost, a kollégiumba viszont csak ma költöztem be. Nem mondanám, hogy álmaim szálláshelye, de tényleg: megteszi, nem panaszkodom, sokkal rosszabb is lehetne. Három görög lánnyal vagyok együtt, két szoba van, és közös a fürdőszoba, meg a konyha. Ők már kb. egy hónapja itt vannak, és gyanús, hogy azóta egyszer sem vitték ki a szemetet… Majd ha jóban leszünk, szólok nekik.

Suliról: öt tantárgyam lesz, szerda, csüt, pénteken vannak óráim. Így holnap még nem tudom, mit fogok csinálni, az biztos, hogy elintézem, amiket el kell, megnézem az egyetemet stb. Az egyetem egyébként itt van mellettünk, nagyon szép nagy, modern épület.

Brno-ról: nagyon szép kis városka, a belvárosban mindenhol csak sétáló utcák vannak, és nem olyan nagy, be lehet járni az egészet. Az épületek nagyon szépek, mindenfelé szökőkutak vannak, és csendes terek. Nekem nagyon tetszik, nyugis kis városka.

Na jó, egyelőre ennyi, minden rendben van! A következő bejegyzésben már biztos több mesélnivalóm lesz, most csak gondoltam, bejelentkezem.

Brno is a relatively small town and it has three “key transfer points” where pickpockets like to get on and off trams and rob people as they enter the vehicles. All they have to do is “create a crowd” in which the victims have to stop or where they lose control over their luggage (purses, most often). And tram drivers know there characters really well: some of them use the PA to announce “dear passengers, please pay particular attention to your belongings”, and some of them publish footage of the pickpockets on YouTube… Like this guy…

Gotta say, he is really brave. His face can be seen and recognized in some videos (from the tram depot, for example), and so some friends of these Roma pickpockets can look him up and beat the hell out of him…

The Morava River (March in German), flows south to join the Danube at Devin, near Bratislava. The broad Morava ‘valley’ is the main route to the north, especially through the Moravian Gate into Poland. The main rail lines were built in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when the whole route was under a single administration.

Vienna (Wien, population 1.7 million) and Bratislava (population 427 000) are about 55 km apart. The line north from Vienna, on the west bank of the Morava, is the Vienna – Břeclav line. The line north from Bratislava, on the other side of the river, is the line to Kúty, which has a connecting line to Břeclav.

Břeclav (population 26 000) was intended as an important rail junction, and it still is. North of the station, the line splits. One line goes to Brno and Prague (Praha). The other continues on the west bank of the Morava, toward the Moravian Gate, Ostrava, and Silesia. This is the former Kaiser-Ferdinands-Nordbahn, begun in 1837.

On this line is another junction at Přerov: the line to Olomouc (population 102 000) diverges here. When Czechoslovakia became independent, the line Prague – Olomouc – Přerov – Žilina – Košice was developed, as its east-west rail axis. This route uses a curve just north of Přerov station: if trains serve Přerov, then they must reverse. That also applies to to route Prague – Olomouc – Ostrava. North of Přerov, these routes share the Moravian Gate line for about 25 km, to Hranice, where the Žilina line diverges. The low pass in the Moravian Gate is about 2 km north of Hranice station.

Finally, there is also the Morava east bank line, north of Kúty. After Skalica, it is more of a local line: Skalica is now the border station between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. At Uherské Hradiště, the separate east-bank line ends: it crosses the Morava to connect to the west-bank line.

The straight and level alignments along the Morava, are ideal for new high-speed rail lines (HSL). A logical pattern of high-speed services along this corridor, does require new connections across the Morava, and the abandonment of junction stations such as Přerov and Břeclav. The proposal here is, that HSL services through the corridor serve only 6 cities: Vienna, Bratislava, Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava and Žilina. In turn, that requires upgrading of some regional lines, such as Brno – Olomouc ( line 300 and line 301), and Ostrava – Žilina (via line 320). No existing line would be closed: they would be upgraded for better regional and inter-regional services, connecting with the European-level HSL services.

The proposed pattern of high-speed lines is:

• a line west of the Morava from Vienna to Ostrava,
• a line to Brno, diverging from the first line, north of Břeclav
• a line east of the Morava from Bratislava, with a bypass of Devínska Nová Ves, joining the first line via a new connection at Holíč (link D, purple)
• a connection from the western line to the eastern line, approximately from Angern an der March to Závod (link A, orange)
• a connection from the eastern line to the western line south of Břeclav, from Závod to Rabensburg (link B, blue), or
• a connection from the eastern line to the western line, along the E65 motorway from Sekule to north of Břeclav station, by-passing Kúty and Břeclav (link C, green).

All these links cross the Morava. The flood-plain directly alongside the river is almost uninhabited, and much of it is a nature reserve. There are only two bridges south of Břeclav. The shortest cut through the protected zone is link A, Angern – Gajary – Závod. The new alignment itself would be about 23 km long, but most of that is through agricultural land.

The link from from Závod to Rabensburg (link B) would be about 12 km long, but it would cut diagonally through the protected zone. That is a good reason to prefer link C, which would run alongside existing infrastructure (motorway, and avoids the station at Břeclav. That line along the E65, by-passing Kúty and Břeclav station, would be about 25 km long.

This bypass would connect to line 250, the line from Břeclav to Brno (population 405 000). This 60-km alignment is also suitable for high speeds, if the curves between the straight sections are improved.

The link from Holíč (link D) would not cross a protected area: if it by-passed Rohatec, it would be about 12 km long. It would join the line Břeclav – Přerov, Czech line 330.

The existing alignment through Přerov northwards can be by-passed entirely, by a new 20-km alignment to the east (red line). High-speed trains from Olomouc, to Žilina and Ostrava, can be re-routed via a new north curve (dashed line), about 10 km long. Trains from the south toward Olomouc, can prossibly use the existing alignment, if the curves near the station are improved. If not, a shorter third bypass (blue line) can be built west of the station.

North-east of Přerov, the high-speed line would follow the existing alignment only approximately. A new or upgraded line to Žilina would diverge at Hranice: see the item on a possible Trans-Carpathian tunnel to Žilina. After the Moravian Gate pass, the Ostrava line follows the Odra (Oder) river. The alignment there lacks the long straight lines along the Morava, except in Ostrava itself. The city has a population of 315 000, the industrialised region around it, 1.2 million. HSL alignments north of Ostrava are not considered here, but certainly a new direct line is needed, from there to Rybnik and Katowice.
