I’ve been working with the guys at Kiddimoto Ltd these past few weeks illustrating and designing their new brochure and I’m very happy to see how the finished print job turned out.

The job required new illustrated backgrounds on every spread (8 plus cover front & rear), new photos of all their products (each of which needed to be cut out and a clipping path made) and then an additional A4 separate stock list.

An immensely enjoyable job from start to finish.

I spent my Sunday afternoon going through a ton of old magazines, conference brochures and other 8-1/2″ x 11″ printed materials I’d been filing on some bookshelves of my home office. It was the first time I’d purged myself of stuff like this in four years and I only hope the recycle collector has enough room on his truck for it all.

Funny thing about this process though. I found myself looking at all this paper differently than ever before. Even though I’m constantly tossing newspapers into the recycle bin, the enormous stacks of magazines I got rid of really made me feel like I was unloading what’s becoming a bygone era. I almost felt like I was throwing out old phonographs or 8-track tape players.

As I prepare to leave my job of the past 3-3/4 years once it’s terminated next week, I’ve come to the realization that as chief editor for a national business publication in charge of every letter and image that’s printed and posted on our Website and e-newsletters, about 95% of the files I kept throughout my tenure were on my computer. I threw out almost all my file folders because most of them I had inherited from my predecessor. And they’re pretty useless now.

Having grown up with so much print all around me, I feel like we’re really smack dab in the middle of a major transformation from print to digital. Because my wife Donna does a lot of catalog and online shopping, we still get plenty of catalogs. And catalogs are far from dead yet. So are magazines. Like I said, we’re right in the middle of this shift.

It’s hard to say how soon we’ll move toward the end of this transformation, but I just found it a bit eerie today, because it really began to sink in that the shift is taking place for real now. The reality is, I believe the message that people like Al Gore have been preaching for years is starting to sink in on people in a subtle sort of way. Perhaps it was accelerated a bit by the recession or the rising cost of mailing printed publications like magazines and catalogs.

Hard to say, but it’s happening.

Hello family, friends, & foes! (If you are a foe, let me know so we can work on that) I know I know, You’ve been waiting for me to post for ages. Well good news… Here it is. Life been great lately and has slightly steered me in a diff direction. I have some exciting news to announce fairly soon, but until then, stay in suspense. Cashmere has been at work and we have some exciting new projects coming down the pipe. We were also showcased in a recent art show called “Revitalization of the 21 Century Church” at Roberts Wesleyan college. We were honored to be asked to enter our work into this show. Northgate continues to be the most amazing church to work and be a part of! (Sorry I’m Biased) We have some new things going on there as well like video of our weekend services. The photography side of my life is becoming more exciting! I am getting opportunity to shoot some pretty cool events/people/things. Like you for instance. I have thoroughly been enjoying fall and all that it brings like the hints of snow and 8 truckloads of leaves jsut from my backyard. Well I don’t know if enjoy is the correct term for that.  I finished my project for winterim today!!!!!!!!! It’s a logo, a poster, and a brochure, which you obviously cannot see the inside of.

One of the critical pieces of your media kit is your capabilities brochure.  A capabilities brochure describe your organization and the services it provides. The brochure should have your organizations logo and tag line visible. The tagline is phrase you want people to associate with your organization. The vision and mission statements are included in your capabilities brochure. Your organization’s goals and objects are briefly explained in the publication. The capabilities brochure list the different services and programs your organization offers.
You can create your own brochure using Microsoft word, Microsoft publisher, abode pagemaker or other desktop publishing software. Capabilities Brochures can be created from services like vista print.

Wrapped up on the Infinity Salon Brochure yesterday. Looks great and I’m glad the salon values consistent branding!

If you have a blog, I’d like you to consider the following questions:

Is your blog comprised mainly of regurgitations of recent company press?
Do your blog entries contain more links to other people’s articles than to your own ideas and content?
Are you blogging on a topic that YOU find interesting instead of a topic your target audience will find useful?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then you might be a blog imposter.  A blog imposter is someone who posts information on their blog WITHOUT the goal of encouraging learning and conversation with their target audience.

People and businesses are becoming more web-savvy these days and are realizing that their web sites will rank higher if they frequently update their blogs.  So, while people are doing a better job of realizing they need to refresh their site’s content frequently, some people are mistaking blogs for press releases, or even company brochures.   Press releases and company brochures are not evil things mind you –but they ARE NOT documents that encourage two-way communication, which is supposed to be the purpose of your blog.

Your blog entries should entertain, provoke, question, prod, and educate your target audience.  Yes – these kinds of blog entries are more difficult to write than simply re-purposing a press release – but in the end, you’ll be a MUCH better resource for your audience, and isn’t that the point of your web site to begin with?

What other ways have YOU seen people be “blog imposters?”  I’d love for you guys to name more examples than the three I mentioned above…

Last night I was ransacking my school stuff because I was searching for my copies of our college’s journal, Momentong. Momentong is the comic issue our College Journalists publish every December where they make fun of professors, students, and everything College of Science. I can’t remember why exactly I was looking for it last night. I guess I figured I needed a good laugh, or remember how we used to laugh at them, but now that I think about it I don’t think I was sad last night. Maybe I just felt like ransacking. Felt like taking a trip down memory lane. I knew it wouldn’t be nice, considering how my college life went, but I still dared. And in my ransacking I came across old handouts, scratch papers that I kept for some reasons, my notes, the serious issues of our college journal, and no Momentong. Frustrating, much?

• My notebooks have always been untidy. I have not the best handwriting and I used to cramp everything up in a page for some courses I was interested enough to pay attention and take notes of.

• I doodle. Especially when I get bored. I found a page of my Socal Issues handouts the back page of which was filled with drawings and letterings. It made me remember my Social Issues class. I was sitting right across Dracula, we were facing each other. We took the class at a laboratory so the tables are huge and we sat around it. We were not very interested with the class, or how the professor was teaching it, so we would either be talking secretly or be playing paper games.

• I found my copy of our thesis draft. Thesis was hell. Not because it was too hard but because I had to deal with Dracula after everything went complicated and uneasy. Even up to the last minute that we were preparing for our defense we still weren’t looking at each other and making comments indirectly.

• I found my Graphology handouts! Yey! Now I can know your personality just by looking at your handwriting. Don’t let me near your notebooks. Kidding. I don’t think Graphology is very accurate, honestly.

• Was I really that bad in Spanish and was I really that good in Chemistry? Well, I never paid attention to my Spanish classes so..

• What are these Periodic Table of Elements doing here? I laughed when I saw a number of copies that are not mine. One was Dracula’s. I saw how bad his handwriting was and it made me smile, for reasons I do not know. One was my bestfriend’s. I remember I borrowed it because I lost mine. And one was someone else’s but it doesn’t have a name on it. So guys, if you want it returned just tell me. I know how attached you are with Chemistry.

• Brochures. Lots of them. Some random student gave me these when I was still a freshman. Join the blah blah organization. Really, I never liked joining organizations. There’s a reason why people call me JC the Loner.

It was nice looking back how nice life was before it was made complicated by his and my doings. I had a lot of people with me. Too bad the relationships I had with them was not strong enough to last and stand the crap we were given. We probably made wrong decisions too.

It didn’t exactly make me sad last night while I was thinking about it. I guess I was overwhelmed with the memories that were being refreshed in my mind. But earlier when I woke up I began to feel the sadness. I felt empty.

Was everything worth it? Was I really supposed to live my life in division?

I live and forget. After I get nostalgic and live, I hope sixteen hours or so is enough to make me forget and live again the next day.

And where is that fucking Momentong?

We shot the Singapore River night skyline photo for the following NUS FASS posters and brochure. We would like to thank NUS for allowing us to use them for our portfolio.
