New Pokemon: Pikachu, Caterpie, Weedle, Kakuna, and Metapod
Main Pokemon Level: 9
Items to Collect: Poke Ball, Potion x1
People to Talk to: Three Bug Catchers

Head north to Route 2 and enter the building at the end. This is now Viridian Forest.

There are five new pokemon that you can catch here: Pikachu, Caterpie, Weedle, Kakuna, and Metapod. Only catch the first three. Kakuna and Metapod are too hard to catch with a regular Poke Ball.

Enter the second door and head left. Follow the path and turn right to pick up a Poke Ball. Head back south turn right, continue going past the kid head north along the path and fight the first Bug Catcher on your right. The kid has a :L 6 Weedle and a :L 6 Caterpie. Since these are grass pokemon, your Bubble will not do much affect. Use Tail Whip once to drop its Defense and then use Tackle three times. Do this for both Caterpie and Weedle.

Now head north to fight your second Bug Catcher. He will have three pokemon. He will start off with a :L 7 Weedle. Use Tail Whip once to lower its Defenses and use Tackle twice to finish him off. He’ll now throw out a :L 7 Kakuna. These are easy. You can either choose to use Tail Whip to lower his Defense, but it won’t do much seeing as all Kakuna can do is use Harden which builds up his Defense. Or you can just hit him with Bubble till he dies. I will go with the later. For some reason your Bubble has more affect on Kakuna then your Tackle. It will take four Bubble at most to kill him. He will then throw out a level 7 Weedle. Use Tail Whip first then kill it with Tackle. By now Squirtle should be at at least :L 11.

Head north, turn left, and then head south. Continue to follow the road till it splits. Go right and pick up a Potion. Turn back and this time go left.

Head north and fight the last Bug Catcher. He will only have one pokemon, a :L 9 Weedle. Use the same tactic. Lower his Defense with Tail Whip and finish him with tackle.

You should now be leaving the Viridian Forest with a :L 13 starting pokemon and three new pokemon; Weedle, Pikachu and Caterpie.

Pewter City

Items to Collect: None
People to Talk to: Nurse, Mart Attendant, Jr. Trainer

Continue north towards Pewter City and heal your Pokemon. Stock up on supplies too. Now head west to the gym. As soon as you walk into Brock’s Gym just head north to be stopped by a Jr. Trainer. He has two Pokemon; a :L11 Diglett and a :L 11 Sandshrew. If you have Squirtle you will have a breeze with this Gym since rock- type Pokemon are weak against water- type Pokemon. Just use Bubble to kill them both. Once you beat him head north and talk to Brock.

From high school I “just” went to college, which is how people from Westmount generally saw it. I chose to apply to Early Childhood Education pretty randomly, among applications to sign language interpretation, and I’m not sure what else. I decided to go to Mohawk College for ECE, essentially because I was generally a fan of children, I figured.

Although self-doubt and general tomfoolery had led me there, going to college was the best choice I had ever made.

The first thing I learned during this program, was that I am pretty smart, and might even have academic potential. The second thing I learned is that I have a passion and talent for working with and for young children. Not to toot my own horn or anything. I wanted to keep learning about the field! Trying to go to University after college was kind of hard; Ryerson told me to take actual University credits before being accepted, Guelph has still literally NEVER responded to my application, and Brock accepted me.

Going to Brock University was the best non-decision I was ever forced to make.

For one, I obviously met some of the most amazing people, and living and working in residence was the very best thing ever. But also, when I started I decided that if I made it here I wanted to go to UBC for my MA in Early Childhood Education, but I had doubts. Once I started though, it turned out I had figured out how to succeed in school. More importantly, I learned AMAZING things from AMAZING Professors. More accurately, I UNlearned so much, and realized my love for feminism and tearing apart the things we take for granted. This has totally guided my perspective on life, and absolutely inspired me to do the whole 9 yards of academics.

As the story goes, I did follow that dream to UBC, and now I’m on the brink of a Ph-fucking-D at the University of British Columbia, with full four year funding. (As a side note, although rejected by UofT for my Masters, this year I will turn them down for their offer of a PhD with four year funding).

I know bragging isn’t great, but I’m genuinely in awe of how I possibly made it here. I can’t wait for the PhD to come, and then to finally exit studenthood and possibly inspire students to re-look at the world and realize they can go much further than they expected.

Thanks to every amazing person who has, and will continue to support me along my academic journey, I am eternally grateful.

Now let’s get one thing straight off the bat—In this piece I’ll only be referring to first generation Pokemon since the next generation is dead to me. I hate when people try to keep updating things when their original plan was already successful. Pokemon was perfect and they ended up ruining it.

I think Pokemon started out as a card game and evolved into an empire somehow. It might have started out as a Gameboy game, but I’m pretty sure the cards came first. When the TV show aired, it was good, but it was basically just an add-on to the Gameboy game. Same story pretty much, just with the addition of new characters.

Ash Ketchum was the main character—eventual Pokemon master. He was just your average anime kid with big dreams. Where he comes from, being a Pokemon master means being able to train your Pokemon (that you catch yourself) to be unbeatable, healthy, perfect creatures. You don’t have to have all 102 Pokemon to be a master, but your Pokemon have to be practically perfect. Have I lost you? Good.

Ash must have been at a crossroads in his life because he decided to leave home to catch Pokemon and become be best around. He meets up with this Pokemon specialist, Professor Oak, who gives him his first Pokemon. In the game you can only choose from three: Bulbasaur (a plant Pokemon who eventually evolves to the awesome Venasuar ), Charmander (a fire Pokemon who can evolve to the powerful Charizard), or Squirtle (who later morphs into badass Blastoise). These are all wicked choices and for some reason in the show Ash gets to choose Pikachu. This really shouldn’t be, but that’s how the story goes. Pikachu should eventually evolve to Raichu but never does in the show which is frustrating. Pikachu is an electric type Pokemon and usually ends up shocking people when it’s annoyed.

So Ash goes on his journey with Pikachu. Usually Pokemon are stored in Pokeballs, but Pikachu is a disobedient POS and walks around all the time. The first city Ash comes across is Pewter City. I think. I’m not even sure anymore. I’m making this up as I go. To win a badge (I forget why badges are important, but I think it has something to do with being the best), Ash has to fight the gym leader at the Pewter City Gym. Before you get excited, when I say fight, I mean fight with their Pokemon.

Brock is the leader of the Pewter City Gym and he has absolutely no eyes. I’ve never seen a more accurate portrayal of Asian eyes. And I can say that because I have really small eyes myself. Brock’s Pokemon are all super annoying rock-type Pokemon. Pikachu beats him easily and Brock feels totally embarrassed and joins Ash on his journey. Oh and Brock gives Ash the Boulder Badge. Sweet Brock, good one.

The next town they come across is Cerulean City where they go to the gym to find 3 gorgeous girls, Daisy, Violet, and Lily—The Sensational Sisters. These sisters were the leaders of the gym, but they kept getting beaten by other trainers so they let their ugly little sister Misty take over. I guess their parents decided to quit with the flower theme when Misty was born? Misty’s Pokemon are all water-types which proved for a dangerous battle with Pikachu. Eventually Misty loses and she gives Ash the Cascade Badge. Sweet.

Daisy, Violet, and Lily.

After that Misty decides to travel with them because she can’t be around her pretty sisters anymore. Or at least that’s what I like to think.

The team is pretty powerful with all of the Pokemon and keeps traveling from town to town to defeat everyone they can.

Sometimes they run into the scheming Team Rocket, a daring duo who want to steal Pokemon to make money. They never end up winning, which is frustrating because I always cheer for the bad guys. Team Rocket is made up of only two people, Jesse and James. James, even though he never says it, is gay. I know this because he occasionally likes to dress up as the girl whenever they go undercover. And his voice gives him away. And his hair cut. And his clothes.

Between them, Jesse and James have a Meowth Pokemon which is a cat-type Pokemon that eventually turns into a Persian. Their leader Giovanni has a Persian, I believe. They also have a team motto that I’m not going to write out because it’s kind of long, but I sadly have it memorized.

The rest of the story line is basically Ash gaining more power, more friends, and Team Rocket being hilarious. I think there’s a love story between Misty and Brock or Misty and Ash but I can’t really remember. It’s been too long since I brushed up on my Poke-knowledge. I just know my parents were embarrassed of my brother and I during this whole stage of our lives.

well as I have not been out these past few days, I thought I would take my camera out with me. There was a little fog in the distance, but there was also snow on the ‘Cat’s Back’ of the Black Mountains, and I had hoped to have taken some good pics, but the sky was just plain old grey as usual, but never the less here are a few of the pics I took of the ‘Cat’s Back’:

Back about a week ago, we noticed a funny smell in the air, but could not work out exactly what it was. On getting to the end of the drive in the field next to ours about 200 yards away I found about 30 ton of this steaming lot. If you look to the right of the 2nd pic you can see our home and how close we are to it. Lovely I thought, that is really going to stink if the weather warms up. Just hope they spread it before it does:

Had a busy day today which now as I am writing this really has taken it out of me to be honest. Stupid really, 18 months ago, my day out would not have bothered me in the slightest, but as I have probably mentioned plenty of times before in this blog, I only need to do a small amount and it really hits me for a day or two.

Finally managed to catch up with an old friend, a little awkward really as we have not seen each other in over 6 months and have hardly spoke either, but I am glad we met up, and hope it all goes back to normal now. We were in Hereford as we had an appointment with our sons Psychologist so talk about his tic’s. It seems that after being told several times by several different doctors and so on that our youngest does have Tourettes. I am afraid that this is something he has inherited from me, although these day I can almost surpress most of them, but there are times when I do them and don’t notice.
He does not have the Tourettes where he shout swear words all the time, and I so hope it never does get to that stage, his is much more muscular at the moment.
I, on the other hand if put in a stressful situation such as speaking in public really blast out as many obsenities as possible, not something I am proud of or notice I do, but this was the reason I did not want to give a speach at my wedding, until some knob head got up on stage and called me up to give a speech. Well you can only imagine how that went.

Spent this afternoon arguing with this chap on the telephone over the transfer of a domain name that he does not own, but then when these web design companies do not hand over the certificate from Nominet, no matter what you say, or how much a client paid for the domain name in the beginging, as long as they have that sheet of paper, there is nothing you can do except pay for what is legally yours anyway again, but at a much higher price. There are plenty of them about, so if you are thinking about have a website built, don’t spend a penny until you have that certificate in your hands. Then start with the web design and NEVER BEFORE.

BROCK GETTING READY FOR SPRING

He is in ICU with pancreatitis and the doctors are saying that his kidneys are failing. Below is a link to a video update on his condition. Networking is not just about getting connected for a job – as a young student networking means becoming familiar with the larger adult community.

It is your role to find opportunity and learn what kinds of goals businesses make,  listen to the stories of how people work together to make and meet said goals. Maintaining relationships and understanding how to leverage networking is a more advanced lesson. For the level of experience at E1G, and most post-secondary students, your networking goal should be broken down to practice how to approach and maintain a conversation about topics you may not know anything about, to ask appropriate questions and listen, recognize accomplishments and congratulate appropriately, and be able to share your own accomplishments appropriately with confidence.  Here is a great article recently on thestar.com with 6 Key Strategies for Networking focusing strategies to lower your anxiety while networking.

That, my friends, is the Boulderbadge. The first badge of the Kanto region Gym circuit (at least, the first one that the main character of FireRed is perfectly paced for. I bet she’s only the hero because she happened to start in the one town that was surrounded by level 5 pokemon. Everyone else in the world has to struggle and maybe catch a high level pokemon that is trying to kill them from a nearby area or maybe fly to the daycare? Who knows, level design is weird when applied to real life at times, but I digress). Okay, on with it.

We last learned that rivals are horrible people. So it’s good that I have yet to run into either one of them again, though I fear of their appearing. They tend to be assholes about it.

Going up through Rt. 1 was fairly uneventful, though I don’t think I’ve ever visited the mother figure in a pokemon game as much as I had while grinding leading up to May and a little bit after it. Mom inexplicably knows how you heal your pokemon, after all. Or maybe it’s just all that rest? Sweet, sweet, magical, all disease curing rest? Yes, that.

Flame Lord was looking pretty buff and on the cusp of spontaneously changing his genetic code, so I though it be best it move on and find a parcel to deliver or something. Enter Viridian City, where everything is green all the time, as the signs like to tell you! Pokemon Center? Check! Grumpy old man in need of coffee? Check! Random man in the mart with parcel in hand recognizing Ruby via undoubtedly magical methods (maybe he’s an expert scrier? Looking into crystal clear pool of water, watching me from a distance?)? Check! Back to Professor Oak!

With a Pokedex in hand, pokeballs were next on the list. Flame Lord needed some friends to fight for as it was, or he’d grow up to be simultaneously lonely and self absorbed. And no one wanted that. No one. Old man has had his coffee and hands over some pokeballs after catching a pokemon midtown, and it’s off to the races. The races in question are actually Rt. 2. The rules dictate that the first pokemon of this route is eligible for my party! And so Infante the Wingull joins my party. The name probably needs some explaining. According to wikipedia, Infante was a title and rank given to children of Spanish and Portuguese kings that were not heirs to the throne. Important to the nobility in terms of status, but not so much in function. That’s how I felt about Infante, I just didn’t see her as much more than a flying surf machine eventually. But she still has a chance to prove herself, I though to myself. I wouldn’t go ahead and leave her unused if the opportunity presented itself. That changed a bit as I tried to train Infante and had her almost die multiple times. Shelved for the moment, will return later.

Some more training and Flame Lord spontaneously convulses and becomes Charmeleon! I can’t imagine what kind of pain is endured during that process, but he comes out stronger so it all works out. Before leaving for the Viridian Forest and trying my luck at getting any bug pokemon that wasn’t a Caterpie or a Weedle, I decided to hit up Rt. 22 and see what kind of randomized pokemon goodness I could catch for myself. So imagine my delighted surprise when out of the tall grass appears an Elekid! Before long, Electoduke was working his moves alongside Flame Lord. I trained them both up in the Viridian Forest and the rest of Rt. 2 leading to Pewter City.

Knowing that Brock has a rock type user made me a bit nervous, knowing that I had to rely of Flame Lord’s Metal Claw to take them out. And yes, I could’ve trained up Infante, but I just didn’t have it in me. Something about Infante puts me off, so I trained up Electoduke instead. I decided to take on Brock with Metal Claw and Thunder Punch in hand.

The trainers leading up to Brock posed no challenge and gave Flame Lord another shiny new level to distinguish himself from the common rabble. A little talk with Br ock about gyms and it’s time to fight for that badge! First up, Phanphy. One-shot with an Ember, no big deal. Next, Brock decides to strut his stuff with his Onix, his highest leveled pokemon at 16. It was rough, Flame Lord’s Metal Claw was only able to strike off between a third and fourth of Onix’s HP while Onix did his best to Rock Tomb the speed out of Flame Lord. Indeed, Flame Lord went from attack first to second consistently, but through pure attrition and the magical properties of a potion Flame Lord felled the foul rock snake whilst still in the green of life. Now, the next little guy is what gave me trouble. Enter Kabuto.

This battle is what made me realize I should at least know the subtypes of the pokemon presented to me. I had no idea Kabuto was a subtype water, so his water gun almost kills Flame Lord as I hastily potion him back to health and attempt to hit him with Metal Claw. Except Kabuto had somehow found the time and luck to Sand Attack the crap out of an already slowed down Flame Lord to the point of not being able to hit something a foot in front of him. Eight tense potion uses later, I decided to try to erase the stat changes by switching in Electoduke.

I didn’t expect to have Electoduke do much for the battle, so he threw a Thunder Punch with me expecting okay results. Instead, Electoduke  found a fire in his heart at seeing Flame Lord so horridly thrown around and one-shots the accursed Kabuto. As I begin to celebrate the small victory, Brock produces his final pokemon, an Omanyte. At this point, Electoduke himself is brushing off his shoulders as the next Thunder Punch sends the Omanyte back into the fossil its ancestors crawled out of. And thus, a Boulderbadge was won, though not nearly as smoothly as it should have been.

So, learned lessons

1. Train more than you think you need to, and whatever it is you do that is more than what you think you need to, train even more than that. It can’t hurt.

2. Figure out BOTH types of the pokemon to be faced, no matter what you think the overall gym type is. This ain’t the old Kanto, and it’s full of surprises.

3. Train Infante! She could’ve helped!

Roger and Brock look so tiny next to the big boys…

Brock tied it at 54 on Luke Hummel’s sixth 3-pointer of the game with 57 seconds to play. White Oak then held the ball to run down the clock and Anderson kept the ball the entire time before blowing past a defender to the basket.

Brock tried to set up a final play but a long pass to Tre Ewell misfired when Ewell slipped and fell and the ball flew straight to a White Oak player.

Skylar Sutton scored 14 points for White Oak (37-1), which won its second consecutive title.
Hummel scored 18 for Brock (32-6)

It was a casual, quick project the first time around. The second version is vibrant with color and there’s actually a plot with exposition and everything! Yeah, for real! Look for yourself (click to enlarge):

You’ll notice that we didn’t get very far. The hours needed to create the pages increased as our techniques became more advanced. We also came to understand the finer thinking required to maintain the relationship between the images and the text. Essentially, we kept learning that we needed to put more time into the project to make it legitimate.

Well, this was a short attempt to revitalize Thrill of the Hunt that ultimately failed. Luckily, we weren’t done there. Not even close. Motivated by the improvement, Brian and I continued to make the webcomic even better.

ANYWAY! Down to business.

Raw is tonight, and RAW GOES OLD SCHOOL!

For those of you who don’t remember, in 2010, Raw did an episode in which everything was completely retro. Raw took a time machine that went back to the 1990′s, with the old school Raw layout, with old school legends, Piper’s Pit, and all sorts. It was all retro – and that episode wasn’t that memorable in my opinion. Aside from a few laughs (like the Iron Shiek!) it wasn’t something that lives long in the memory. Hopefully, on the road to Wrestlemania, things are a little different this time around. What’s there to expect tonight (or tomorrow morning if you’re in the UK)?

The Legends

Yeah, there are legends returning tonight who showed up in the last one. We have “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes! We have Mae Young (this woman is clearly off her rocker! How old is she?). Mean Gene Okerlund and his beautiful moustache! We have “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan! We have Sgt. Slaughter! We have “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase (speaking of DiBiase, when was the last time his son was on WWE TV?). We have the Honky Tonk Man! And we’ve also got The New Age Outlaws! It’s always great to see them on WWE TV, and who knows, they might even compete tonight! They’ve been doing some house shows, and it’d be great to see them do more than just a promo. And last… but not least…

THE NATURE BOY! The Limousine Ridin’, Jet Flying, Kiss Stealin’, Wheelin’ Dealin’, Son of a Gun! Ric Flair is back on our screens after he showed up on Raw and passed the torch to The Miz if you will, by gifting him the Figure Four Leg Lock. It’s always good to see the Nature Boy on Raw! Ric Flair, you absolute legend! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It’s Time To Play The Game

Triple H is on Raw tonight! No doubt to move along his feud with Brock Lesnar, who’s ass he kicked last week on Raw in that epic brawl at the start of Raw. Expect Triple H to challenge Brock to a match at Wrestlemania 29. Brock is not here on this Raw, so don’t expect some kind of altercation between the two. Maybe Triple H and Paul Heyman will engage in a war of words. I don’t know. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what they do to amp up the anticipation for the match at Wrestlemania.

The Rock Decides To Show Up

The WWE Champion was NOT present at last week’s Raw. Fortunately, he has decided to show up tonight on Raw, and probably will engage in a confrontation with Wrestlemania opponent John Cena. I’m not exactly thrilled with the fact that all of The Rock’s appearances on Raw are this hyped up. -.-

Weed The People…. err… I mean We The People

Yes, the road to Wrestlemania 29 continues for Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger. The Mexican Aristocrat and The “Real American” will no doubt collide again, and that means… Zeb Colter is on the mic. This guy, love him or hate him, is GOLD on the mic. He flat out owned Del Rio on the mic last week, and he’s definitely going to be the guy that’ll push Jack Swagger higher and higher. Hehehehe. I’m sorry. A Jack Swagger weed joke had to be done.

What’s Next For The Shield?

The Shield is ON A ROLE, and a good Wrestlemania program should definitely be on the cards. It seems that The Shield will engage in a feud with Sheamus and Randy Orton judging by what happened on SmackDown! which I am so opposed to. The Shield NEED something big for Wrestlemania. They’ve been the hottest stable in a while in WWE, and they can NOT be put out with a lame-ass feud with the same old people.

CM Punk’s Road To Wrestlemania

Well, CM Punk is not going to the main event of Wrestlemania 29 as WWE Champion. But, surely WWE has big plans for him leading up to the event. Which could include…

THE UNDERTAKER!

Undertaker is reportedly in Buffalo tonight (where Raw is held) so there is a possibility that he may confront the man who called himself GOD last week, CM Punk. Undertaker vs CM Punk seems an inevitability if Undertaker is healthy and the Road To Wrestlemania for these two could start TONIGHT!

So it’ll be an interesting RAW to say the least. Legends Return! Egos Increase! Gods Collide! Race Wars Continue! And Tonight… RAW GOES OLD SCHOOL!

1. The first was casually done for Brian’s class during the second half of junior year. It has no color and there was no drafting.
2. The second version was done at our leisure because we liked working together and liked the project (and at the very least were flexing our respective skill sets). It took place at the end of junior year and a little bit over that summer. It has color and a comprehensible plot.
3. The third was a concentrated effort to produce quality work for my final project as a college student. It has marvelous illustrations in vivid detail and a refined, mapped out plot. This was the primary focus of our final semester.

Brian and I improved in our crafts during college as one would expect, but what was so cool was that this project evolved alongside us. Each version improves upon the last, dramatically.

The first version is the shining example of a writer’s work after one draft–there are grammatical and syntactical tragedies as well as struggles with plot clarity. Fortunately it was primarily graded on the illustrations. Have a look (and click the images to enlarge):

There’s a bit more to this idea than simply adventuring anthropomorphic animals. Two of them are anthropomorphic animals Brian and I actually imagined as kids, completely unknown to the other (we met in college).

Brian had doodles of Fritijof the rabbit from his younger days. I had invented a bulky platypus named Magnus in middle school. We were astonished by the coincidence and immediately wanted to integrate them into Brian’s assignment. We didn’t want to make one more important than the other, so we introduced an equally ferocious beast to round out our squad: Brock.

Anyway, we consider the first version comical at this point. Our second attempt at this project was much better. Here’s a teaser:
