It was the perfect couch for making forts with cushions and blankets. A favoite activity for my younger brother and I. The navy velvet-like couch had 4 plush cushions that we often used to construct the walls of our forts.

This particular day, tired of fort-making, I stacked the cushions on top of one another, 4 high, like a tower. Then I instructed my little brother to climb on top. Dangerous? No way. You’re supposed to do the standard sibling test before attemping such feats yourself.

As he perched on top, the cushion tower swayed from side to side and with one lean to far to the right, they toppled over toward the cushionless couch, brother falling last. The fall left a nasty gash on his forehead from the base of the couch where the cushion should have been.

My mom’s insticts kicked in as she found a clean white rag in the basement, tied it around my brother’s head, shoved us both in the car and flew off to the emergency room–on a weekend with my dad out of town. Once at the hospital, I was so guilt-filled, I could not come into the hospital. I sat in the car, waiting, feeling like a horrible big sister.

He came back with several stitches, and I never used my brother as a guinea pig again.

Brother has a comprehensive line of embroidery machines, and it can be bewildering to figure out the differences between the machines.

The most economical machine, and the most popular brother machine for embroidery made for the masses, is the Brother SE270D. The SE270D has a D for Disney.

It is a computerized Sewing and embroidery machine with 97 built-in designs including 27 designs featuring Disney characters and 98 stitch functions. It features Brother’s exclusive new quick-load thread cassette system. This means that simply place a spool of thread into the cassette, insert cassette into machine and the needle is threaded automatically! This unit also features built-in embroidery designs, 1-step auto-size button holes and many other time-saving features.

The brother feature of auto-threading is common in several other manufacturers and models too.

The next step up is the Brother SE350. It is considered high-end according to Brother, though this is a classification of the consumer market. It features 67 built-in stitches, 98 stitch functions, 70 built-in embroidery designs, a push-button automatic thread cutter, effortless bobbin loading and a built-in card

slot enabling use of thousands of optional embroidery designs. There are 10 styles of one-step automatic buttonholes along with the bobbin Quick-Set feature. There is an LCD screen on this machine. It is a machine that I personally own, and am very satisfied with it.

The Brother PE700 is an embroidery only machine with a 5″ x 7″ embroidery area! The PE700 recognizes all Brother memory cards (Disney Memory Cards excluded) that work with a maximum 5″ x 7″ design area. There are 136 built-in embroidery patterns which include scrollwork, florals, quilt patterns and various other designs.

The PE750D is a close cousin of the PE700, but as you would guess, the D means Disney, and this machine has 52 Disney designs. At 650 stiches per minute, the machine is no slouch.

The best home machines are around 1200 stiches per minute as far as I know.

Again, keep in mind that these PE700 and 750D machines are in the embroidery only section.

Innovis and Duetta are Brother embroidery lines, and things get a little blurry here, at least for me.

The Innovis 4000D is one of Brother’s most advanced machines. It is the top of the line Innovis and

has a maximum embroidery speed of 1000 stitchesDmin. There are 2 USB ports and a very large maximum embroidery area of 12″x7″. Of course, there is a color LCD with touch screen.

The Duetta 4500D is also a top of the line machine. The motto is “Do It All. Do It Better.” The Automatic Height Adjuster™ (AHA) feature, the extra-large quilting extension table, and bright LED lights. This includes a quilting feature.

The top of the line machine is the Brother Quattro 6000D. This is an amazing machine with quilting, sewing, embroidery all included. There is almost 50 square inches of work space – 10 inches to the right of the needle and 5 inches of height. The LCD screen is high definition. The LCD also gives a zoomed in view of the needle area. You can also integrate with applique with this machine, and it inclues 600 designs.

Feet pound erratically on uneven stairs that I take at top speed, flashing a jagged key, twisting an oval knob, heart racing past a pile of summer shoes. I bolt the door behind me. This reminds me of a recurring dream I had when my window overlooked Broadway and the train tracks. The creature was snarling with black matted fur and cold eyes. I pushed my brother inside and saw it going for my mother. Her foot caught on a stair and she fell forward. Someone inside slammed and locked the door. I stared through glass and screen. I saw my mother’s eye disappear down the dog’s throat. I tried to scream and move. I tried to shake the bed. I saw the ceiling and heard a familiar voice.

Jokes aside, I selected this place to be the food venue for a dinner with Stacy, the brother, and Mark.  Lately The Redhead was distinguished by being the final review for the outgoing New York Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni.  That boosted its popularity.  What also will help is the face that it will soon be in a feature on Thirteen about mom and pop restaurants in NYC (I saw a man filming the dining room and asked the waitress about it).

The Redhead is yet another establishment which doesn’t really take reservations, and you must show up early in order to avoid a ridiculous wait.  Around 6:30 on a Tuesday night was just about right.  I wasn’t too fond of the table, kind of an island in the flow of traffic, but beggars can’t be choosers.

We started off with the bacon peanut brittle which was not what we expected.  Because you think brittle and conjure up a sticky rectangular piece which will snap your teeth in two.  This peanut brittle was essentially beer nuts with tiny bacon pieces.  And some spicy taste.  More bacon please.  I’d probably pass on these next go round.

This fried chicken impressed me and I’m kind of skeptical about fried chicken in that if it’s not KFC, it’s probably not worthwhile.  I’m very picky about the dryness of the bird meat.  But The Redhead’s fowl was out of this world.  So moist and oily, with a crunchy buttermilk exterior.  And the cornbread and salad weren’t too shabby either.

I finished the meal with liquid dessert, a wee glass of moscato.  Perfect!  Mark had suggested moscatos during an earlier conversation, and seeing a moscato in the dessert section made it clear that I needed to order that.  Dessert wines are the best!  Stacy let me sample her toffee cake with buttermilk ice cream, delicious (liked the hints of lemon zest).  Also the best, take home goodies.  The espresso cookie was more like a brownie and had hints of sea salt.  Sweet.

I purchased the Brother Se 270d Embroidery Machine as a replacement sewing machine (I had worn out my other one). I wanted to start embroidering and mongraming, but sewing was my main function. I have LOVED playig with this. The only negative I would say is the auto threader, but if you buy the smaller spools it works fine. Mine is missing something that is supposed to allow you to use larger spools, so I have to improvise and it is a REAL PAIN. For a novice embroiderer I would say it is a good starter machine. The hoop size is only 4X4 which can be prohibitive, but for my use it is fine.Since I use it a LOT for clothing, I love the buttonholer and button features and the auto cutter is convenient.If you are mainly going to embroider, I wouldn’t use this one as color changing is time consuming, invest in a multi color machine with a larger base for true embroidery.

I got <a href=”http://www.bestsewingmachineforsale.com/brother-xl3510-sewing-machine”>Brother Xl3510 Sewing Machine</a> for Xmas last year after reading hundreds of reviews for different machines. I definitely wanted a manual sewing machine (after hearing/reading about lots of problems with the computerized), one could go through some heavy materials- particularly fleece, and wasn’t horribly fussy to deal with.

In general, it’s easy to use and works really well. It’s easy to thread normally (I can’t figure out the automatic threader).

Sometimes, as with most manuals, the needle will skip. You really need to listen for problems with the bobbin and stop as soon as you hear it. Sometimes the bobbin doesn’t catch quite right and it gets itself tangled in the casing. If this happens, you’ll have to really pull gently to get your project to move up enough to carefully cut the threads out. Not a huge deal, just something to be aware of.

The only real complaint I have about it is the underpass under the arm is much too small to do any enormous projects (like a bedspread).

If you buy the case with this, as I did, be aware that the case does not snuggly fit the machine and the machine can bounce around and some of the delicate metal parts on the top can bend. This happened once when I put it on the floor of my car to transport it to a friend’s house to do some work. The piece bent back easy enough.

I was with Chris in our local shopping centre. We were meeting up with his mom because we had said we’d look after his little brother for the day. He seemed really happy to see us but Chris’ mom didn’t look well. She looked like she was quite ill. We brought Chris’ little brother into a big department store where everyone liked to hang out.

Chris had to go to the toilet so it was just me and his little brother. But then he said he needed to go to the toilet too. He ran off to the bathrooms and I realised I shouldn’t just wait for him to come back, I should wait outside the toilets. I legged it up to the toilets like it was an emergency or something and I was out of breath when I got there.

I met a girl who I used to go to school with but we’d had a fight and hadn’t spoken in years. She was wearing our uniform from work so I asked her had she gotten a job in the cinema. She started going on and on about it and how much she loved it and how great it was that we’d be working together and so on. I couldn’t get away from her but when I finally did, both Chris’ brother was back from the toilet and hadn’t noticed me standing outside.

This is where it gets kind of disturbing. I went to join Chris’ brother back in the main part of the shop. He was sitting on the ground with his arms around his knees looking really really scared. It was clear something had happened but I didn’t know what. I ran up to him and when I reached him I found out that these guys who were sitting behind him had poured something on him, like oil but I’m not sure what exactly it was. I picked him up and held him in my arms while absolutely screaming at the guys. Chris came up at this point and told me to leave them as cleaning up his brother was the priority. I knew he was right so we took him back to the bathrooms.

The dream skips a bit then because the next bit has me meeting Chris on his break from work. It looked more like McDonald’s than a cinema though. I had bought chocolate nuggets (and spent ages picking them out) to share with him on his break. Our manager and another worker were standing beside us though so I offered some chocolate to them. Chris made a face at me as if to say I was sucking up to the manager so I stuck my tongue out at him. Our manager took some chocolate but the other woman said she had gone off chocolate ever since she had gotten a bad box of it one Christmas. I think that was the end of it.

I was so frightened for Chris’ brother, I woke up feeling horrible. I guess even though it was just a dream I felt responsible for it.

–Brother? Brother can you hear me?

He could hear, though whom he had no idea nor why the voice seemed to rise from a background of white noise. Brother Crawford was sitting on the ground, moist soil and green tufts of grass but could feel a stern rocky terrain beneath him. The air smelled of fish and honeysuckle.

–Are we near the river?

–A stones throw, yes, Brother.

Limp legs barely lifted him aloft. He was standing on a rocky shoal in the center of the White River rolling swiftly by in green and brown shades of sunlit sparkle. Brother Crawford began to panic. The water pulsed and eddied around his small island, eroding it grain by grain, pebble by pebble, carrying the debris southward to join the Wabash, flowing on into the Ohio before becoming lost in the Mississippi to be swept out into the vastness of the sea. His foothold was dwindling rapidly.

–What do i do?

–Find a clear spot upstream and head for it.

Brother Crawford felt deja vu, thick and suffocating, leading him into an inevitable moment, a preordained circumstance. Things came back to him, in a swift rush of images and feelings, washing away his sense of time and place.

–That is what you said to me that day.

–And what we did.

–But i got there and looked back. You were gone. They told your parents that an undercurrent took you away. i thought maybe i saw your hand, drifting backwards downstream but i’ve always wanted to think it was a tree branch.

–It doesn’t matter now, Brother. Find a clear spot upstream and head for it.

–i already said you told me that once before. Look what happened.

–Yes, Brother. i did, and you made it safely home that day. Take my advice and just leap.

–It’s awfully hard to find a decent place to jump from here.

–It usually is. Just do the best you can, Brother.

Brother’s island was nearly half the size now as it had been, sand sweeping downstream as steady as if falling through an hourglass. He was alone on the island and no longer felt comfortable there, the river glassy and bright inviting him, parting to embrace his body as it broke the surface.

In my Creative Writing class, we’re working on our short stories to finish out the semester; and one of the main criteria she lists that has to occur in our stories is that the protagonist has to undergo a change.  They can’t be the same person they were at the beginning of the story.  It’s understandable–it’s what makes good reading.  And writing, for that matter.

During class on Tuesday, she discussed how, in real life (obviously), people change all the time.  We are not the same people we were at the age of twelve–and I’m certainly no exception.  At the same time, however, you have to think… there’s also the quote:  “People NEVER change.”  And somehow, that’s true, too.  Small parts of people, the parts that make them the people they are everyday, remain constant.  Yet still, somehow, changes are made everyday in who we are.  In essence–both remarks are true.

The past few days, I’ve been thinking–and as I always like to say, that’s always a bad thing–about how much things have changed lately.  I spent about four hours with my brother tonight, and it was honestly the highlight of my day.  I’ll be brutally honest, when I’m around family, that’s usually never the case.  But it’s true–I really had a good time.  For the first time, that I can actually recollect, my brother and I had a real, one-on-one, open conversation.  He told me things I didn’t think he’d ever tell me.  For once, I felt like I had a real brother.

I know that’s kind of sad–but it’s unfortunately true.  But I’ve noticed how much he’s changed since I knew him about two years ago.  Maybe that’s one of the ways I became so bitter, pessimistic, cynical, and harshly sarcastic over the past six-to-eight years–maybe I learned a bit of it from him.  I realize now, it was mainly out of defense and deflection.  (Being angry is so much easier than allowing yourself to be vulnerable.)  But I see now how much he was like that THEN.

After tonight, he seemed much more at ease–even with everything still going on–and definitely more upbeat.  He’s got that silly, kid-like giddiness back again–the joking sarcasm back in his demeanor, that nips instead of snapping at you.  He reminds me a lot like the brother I knew when I was a kid–the dorky pain-in-the-ass I loved hanging out with–and I missed that so dearly.

Plainly put:  he’s happier.  As am I.  In the past year, we’ve both changed a lot.  I think, what it was, we each needed someone to show us that life doesn’t have to be so one-side-tipping-the-scale.  I mean, it’ll never be perfectly balanced, obviously… but to know that there can always be a somewhat medium is hope enough.  I think we both needed the right people to help us see that.

I’m glad it happened.

In other news:  I’m now up to 19 cranes.  I found old Spring Awakening posters from my college’s production last semester–and figured, “Hey.  These would look pretty damn cool as cranes.”  And voila!–a new one to the collection (this was two days ago, mind you… haha).

I just wish it wasn’t bloody PINK yarn I was stringing them all together with, lmao.

Please know you have profoundly helped me grow to who I am today (I hope that’s not a bad thing!). I apologize off the bat for the bad grammar. This is a very stream of consciousness letter. I am thankful for so many people this is going to sound like an acceptance speech. If only I had an award to go with it!For some reason, I feel more thankful than ever. Going through a transformation of sorts puts everything in perspective. When I lost my job this past June, I would have never guessed I would have felt more alive and have met some of the most amazing people. I never dreamed I would be on television/radio and also have a blog, which has had to date over 15,000 hits. I am grateful for EVERYONE who visits day after day!

It was only yesterday we were singing to Mr. Boscia’s music, seeing Mr. Rossi throw a desk, cutting class, going to the prom. Now some of you have your own families. Keep me in your heart, as I do with you.

Wagner College gave me amazing inspiration to find myself and meet professors and life-long friends who inspire me daily. There are many ways you can gain an education as I learned in my years at Wager!

This young man came along with his sister, (a few posts back) to get his picture taken, while I took some for her Senior pictures. When I first met him, I recognized his “cuteness” right away. It wasn’t until later, when I really looked at him through my lens, that I saw……”The Look.”

So,…. I think he favors Sean Connery, in “The Look” kinda way. =0)

Maybe it’s the brown eyes, or the eyebrows…different eyebrow arching. Nonetheless, this is one cute kid and I really enjoyed talking while we walked from place to place taking pictures. He came up with a lot of his own poses…very creative!

I used this shot on my blog for his sister too, but I love this one. They have a very loving “brother and sister” relationship, so this fun shot makes me smile even more.

The parentals and the brother and I came here on a Monday evening because the mother unit wanted Italian within walking distance of the hotel.  Since I wanted to accrue more OpenTable points, I found this place La Giara which seemed to fit the bill.

I didn’t really need to make a reservation since the place was rather dead.  I’d rather have a place undercrowded that overcrowded though.  At least we could hear each other easily and had attentive service, though the waitress’s Eastern European accent was rather thick.  Lucky for us, Monday nights are $9 pasta nights.  Good deal since the usual costs are about $13 to $16.

The family shared the bufala caprese appetizer ($11.50) which was “bufala milk mozzarella, plum tomato, basil, oregano and extra virgin olive oil.”  It also came with bread and olive oil tomatoes on crostini.  Yum.  We also shared a red wine with was yum.

The brother and I shared a pear and walnut salad which was not too thrilling.  It was okay but needed more cheese since it advertised cheese.  As my main, I ordered spaghetti in lamb ragout and pecorino cheese ($13.50).  I found this dish to be comforting and satisfyingly lamb-y though it was toeing the line into blandness.  Plus I got extra freshly grated cheese on top, and we all know that cheese can improve nearly any dish.

I felt bad for La Giara since it could have used some more business.  At least we were doing our part.  And it’s an appealing cozy space, with candles on the tables, white walls accented with dark wooden beams, wine bottles as decor, and so forth.  You can do it a favor and go Mondays.
