Benefits of a Brown Sugar Scrub (www.buhterup.com)

http://www.buhterup.com

The benefits of a brown sugar scrub described below are six reasons why you will love including brown sugar into your natural skin care routine.

1 – Exfoliation

Brown sugar has tiny particles that provide just the right amount of texture to gently exfoliate the skin. Exfoliation, or the removal of dead skin cells from the skin, should be done on a regular basis. It is a process that makes skin look and feel healthier by improving skin circulation and riding it of toxins. Exfoliation also increases the production of collagen that gives skin its tone and elasticity.>

2 – Smaller pores

Exfoliating the skin with a brown sugar scrub cleans and tightens pores giving the skin a more even uniform appearance; pores look smaller, skin tone more even. It can also diminish the damage to the skin caused by acne and other skin conditions. It eliminates fine lines and diminishes the signs of aging.

3 – Healthier skin

Sugar contains glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid an ingredient that keeps skin healthy. It moisturizes and conditions the skin while protecting it from the harmful effects of toxins. Using a brown sugar scrub improves your skin’s ability to retain its natural moisture balance.

4 – Dry skin remedy

More benefits come from brown sugar’s property to be an excellent treatment for people who suffer from dry, itchy scalps. Using a scrub as a pre-treatment prior to shampooing can eliminate dandruff, moisturize the skin and ease itching and flaking. After a brown sugar scrub hair looks healthy and shiny.

5 – Soothing aromatherapy

The wonderful sweet smell of brown sugar provides a soothing aromatherapy. It is relaxing and a perfect addition to any spa treatment.

Brown Sugar Scrub

This scrub will make you feel soft and smooth. The natural Brown Sugar buffs away dry skin cells and helps to hold moisture in you skin. With its moisturizing ingredients like Sweet Almond Oil and Vitamin E, this scrub ensures that your skin is left completely hydrated and revitalized.

Brown Sugar: Excellent exfoliation for sensitive skin.

Lemons: Natural disinfectant, deodorizer and astringent is a natural body cleanser and skin lighter.

Oats: Relieve dryness. Restores natural moisture balance to help heal minor irritations.

This particular scrub has lemon, which works as a natural disinfectant. It will open up and cleanse clogged pores. The oils from the mixture will leave you with soft, healthy glowing skin.

1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup sea salt 2 tbsp coconut oil or olive oil 1 tbsp of honey 2 tbsp of freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tbsp of your favorite essential oil (I recommend bergamot for energy, eucalyptus or spearmint for stress relief and lavender or jasmine for something more relaxing.) Mix all the ingredients in a bowl until it turns into a paste. Apply to moist skin in circular motion using your fingertips to help skin cells slough off faster. Rinse off with warm water. Apply your favorite moisturizer. Results: smooth, soft glowing skin.

Just tried this Brown Sugar Scrub from SpaPlayground.com, and it is so nice and yummy and exfoliating!

The leftovers from my scrub. Kinda gross-looking, but it smells and feels quite good.

Here is the recipe I used:

brown sugar, about 1 cup

olive oil, 1/2 cup

vanilla extract, 1 tsp (for nice smell)

honey, 1 tsp (optional)

The recipe says you can use it on your whole body, but I just tried it on my feet and legs, and it feels very nice. My feet feel very smooth. However, I smell a bit like olive oil now… maybe I should have done a better job washing it off.

I’m never buying brown sugar again. Period. There’s no need. It’s sugar and molass

I’m never buying brown sugar again. Period. There’s no need. It’s sugar and molasses. That’s it. Well, it’s also a kick ass song by The Rolling Stones, but that’s neither here nor there.

You can save that other canister where you were keeping the brown sugar (which, let’s face it, unless you do more baking than the average person, your brown sugar has probably just dried out into a mass of crusty junk), and use it instead for coffee beans or tea bags (giggle) or candied walnuts.

I’ll concede that it would be good having a half cup or so around for general use sprinkling on oatmeal or grits or whatever. But I’ve come to realize there’s no use keeping around entire 1lb bags of the stuff except around the holidays when you’re doing a lot of baking. Otherwise, make that goodness fresh. Fresh goodness is always better than crusty goodness.

So, today’s Skullery Skills is also kind of a recipe post that I’ll link back to whenever I post anything that requires brown sugar. Let’s get to it.

What You’ll Need

How Much

granulated white sugar

1 c

molasses

1 T (light brown)
2 T (dark brown)

1) In a medium sized bowl, use a fork or hand mixer* to stir together the sugar and molasses until completely mixed. There shouldn’t be any lumps or streaks of molasses left.

*Update: my friend Mel recommends a pastry cutter.

2) Done.

Put it, not in your face, but in whatever your recipe calls for. Or, scrub your body with it? People baffle me, man.

Makes the equivalent of 1 cup fully packed brown sugar.

Pro Tip: If your recipe calls for more than a cup, I’d suggest using a hand mixer, unless you got the arms for it.

Sugar, sugar… ohhhh, honey, honey! When I first moved to Florida, I worked at a spa for a few

Sugar, sugar… ohhhh, honey, honey! When I first moved to Florida, I worked at a spa for a few years. It was a fun job, and I also learned a lot about skin care. One of the most important things I learned is that most over the counter skin care products contain parabens. This just another word for preservative, but it is linked to cancer and skin aging. Just look on the back of your face and body wash– scary right?

After I quit the spa, I was able to stretch my freebies about six months before I had to start purchasing my own products. I found that I could not afford them because they expire very quickly and often are expensive. As I started looking for alternatives, I realized I could make my own products from household items. Over the next few weeks, I’ll update some of my tricks and tips. While I probably spend about the same as I would if I were to purchase my skin care products from the drug store, I am saving myself peace of mind of knowing that what I would put in my body for food is the same product I’m using to care for my skin.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 Tbs. coconut oil (sold at a local health foods store)

1 Tbs. honey

Mix products together and scrub skin! You can replace coconut oil with olive or sunflower oil if you want, but I think coconut smells the best. Sometimes I’ll add a tsp. vanilla extract if I want a different smell!

A friend includes other ingredients in her scrub including coffee and grapefruit juice! Check it out here: Pretty Posts

Have fun with your gorgeous, shimMERy skin!

Its Friday! And what an awesome day it is!! Spring has sprung in New York, flowers are blooming and the cherry blossoms are looking as gorgeous as they always do. I love this time of year, the energy is rising and everyone is getting ready for the warm months to come. I cannot wait to be engulfed in summer’s warm breeze.

Since its Friday, it’s love your skin day and I’ve got a sweet treat for ya’ll. I had been looking for a good scrub that would polish the skin and that was moisturizing enough so as to not dry out my face. I’ve tried many that range from drugstore brands to the ones only sold at beauty departments and I can’t really say that many are better than others. In the end the sole purpose of the scrub is to polish away the dead skin that hangs out on your skin. Why do it with harmful chemicals you can’t even pronounce?? Right?

It took a few tries and a little online research until I found what I think is the best, behold the sugar scrub. It is truly amazing! I use it on my face, I use it on my body, hands, feet… it’s awesome! The best part about it is that brown sugar has its natural benefits as it contains glycolic acid which promotes vibrant, healthy skin, not to mention its anti-bacterial and moisturizing properties. You are probably thinking: “why didn’t I do this before?!” I know. Let me be your sugar momma.

Sweet Brown Sugar Scrub

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp honey

a few drops of water

Mix all ingredients together until sugar is completely soaked and it forms a gooey substance. Scrub, scrub, scrub. Pat skin dry and follow with your moisturizer. Remember to treat your skin gently… you’re not cleaning your bath tub. =)

You can eliminate the honey if you like, I add it because it has antioxidants, anti-microbial and cleansing properties. It adds a little more moisture to the skin as well leaving it soft and supple. The olive oil alone for this recipe is good enough so if you don’t want the golden syrup just substitute the tablespoon of honey for olive oil instead. I keep a little jar of this in my bathroom for whenever my skin needs a little polish.

Enjoy the treat and have a great weekend. Happy Friday!

Xx

This was all sparked by my wonderful friend Roxanne! We have known each other for over 20 years. We can go a year without talking and when we do it’s like we’ve talked everyday for the last year! So last night we were talking, I was telling her about My Coupon & Mary Kay Passions, and she was telling me about her DIY homemade BROWN SUGAR BODY SCRUB & DIY homemade COFFEE BODY SCRUB for CELLULITE Passion! So in honor of her today, I am going to share her secret recipe with you.

•Benefits of a SUGAR BODY SCRUB: One of the little know properties of brown sugar is that is anti-bacterial. Used in World War II to treat wounds, sugar has anti-bacterial properties that make it an ideal beauty product. Not only does it exfoliate, but it won’t cause infection should you roll over a slightly nicked heel or a small cut. A good brown sugar body scrub is composed of a few elements; brown sugar, oil and an essential oil. The sugar exfoliates gently while the oil (typically olive oil or safflower oil or sesame oil) lubricates to prevent damage to the skin. The essential oil (typically lemon or lavender) leaves a fresh scent and masks the scent of the oil.

please do NOT….

Don’t use brown sugar scrubs on your face. The skin on your face is very delicate. Using a brown sugar scrub on your face can result in tearing and scratching of delicate skin, especially around the eyes and mouth, so use this type of scrub on other, less delicate areas such as the skin on your knees, elbows, legs or feet.

1 cup brown sugar (to gently exfoliate without drying)

•Benefits of a COFFEE BODY SCRUB: No more cellulite. While coffee is wonderful for many reasons, it is actually the caffeine it contains that provides the added health benefits as a scrub. When coffee is applied to the surface of your skin, it helps redistribute fat cells and decrease the formation of cellulite.

•Problems with varicose veins. Many people accept varicose veins as a necessary evil–either as a sign of getting older or a predisposition inherited from Mom or Dad. Now with a coffee body scrub skin care routine, you may be able to prevent varicose veins or even make them vanish! The caffeine in a coffee scrub acts as a vascular restrictor–shrinking blood vessels, thus helping to reduce varicose veins.

….Alter the measurements according to how much you need, more or less will work

2 cups of ground caffeinated coffee (decreases the formation of cellulite)

*Note: The coffee grounds should be very fine. Put the grounds through a coffee grinder twice, if necessary. You may also use grounds after you brew yourself a pot of coffee. Instant coffee works too!

2 cups of raw sugar or white sugar (to gently exfoliate without drying)

3 tablespoons olive oil or sesame oil (to moisturize)

Optional:

I had such fabulous success with my batch of Salt bars that I thought…why can’t I do this with sugar? I should have prefaced this with the information that the only thing I cook is soap. I don’t make food and my family is good with that… for a good reason!

My soap was doing just fine until I added a pound of brown sugar to it and then it turned into taffy. I molded it just to see what I would have in the morning but I’m not holding out much hope…

The Next Day – The soap did harden up to a point. I cut it into bars and it’s a bit sticky inside but it smells really good and I think that with some extra cure time we may have something here…

I’m headed out of town tomorrow morning for the remainder of the week so I’ll put these bars on the shelf and see how they look on Saturday night. I’ll keep you posted…

I have always been a fan of scrubs but sometimes they can get a bit pricey. Making my own scrub is something I have wanted to do for a while, along with a trillion other things. My “I want to make” list is VERY VERY long and I am just now starting to get around to some of them. Anyways, if you Google “DIY Scrubs” you will get a million different recipes. How do you choose?? Well for this one I was looking for something really easy that I could put together with things I already had. I checked out a few recipes and they were pretty similar just switching out a few things here and there. I decided to put together my own mix and match recipe.

For my recipe you will need…

1 cup of brown sugar

1/3 cup olive oil

2 tablespoons of honey

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

You will also need

a jar with a lid. Try for something air tight. (Hobby Lobby is having a 50% of sale on glass jars right now)

a large spoon for mixing

a small spoon or small spatula for getting out the perfect amount when ready to use

a mixing bowl if your jar is too small to mix in.

Measure out your brown sugar

Add to your jar or mixing bowl

Then add the olive oil, honey, and vanilla right on top.

Mix it all up till it looks something like this

You can add more brown sugar or olive oil to get the consistency that you want. At the last second I decided to add some ground cinnamon to it.

Now you can test it out. Use you small spoon or spatula (or just your fingers) to put a small amount in your hand.

Rub it all over your hands and then rinse with warm water. The olive oil will make your hands feel slick. Just rub it into your hands. In a couple of minutes they will just feel ultra soft and moisturized.

Now you can just store your jar by the sink and make your hands, or whole body, feel silky smooth!

Couple of tips…. I like my olive oil to have some strong flavor so my scrub smells like sweet olives and less like sugar. If you want something that smells sweeter use a lighter olive oil. Next time I think I’m going to try some coconut oil. Oh and remember that the sugar will settle so you will need to give it a little stir before you use it. I plan to keep experimenting with scrubs. When I find something else I like I will definitely share it with you. Now go check your cabinets! I am sure you have everything you need already. Whip some up and pamper your self, or some one else !! This would also make a GREAT gift for your friends, mother, grandma, MIL, teacher, anyone! Just jazz up the jar a little. Enjoy!!

Every winter I get terrible dry skin on my legs and hips, and lotions are just never enough (not to mention the alcohol in them only makes things worse). So this year I started looking at some other options to try and help me out.

I actually found this great home remedy on Pinterest and was an original recipe from Paula Deen. I used the same ingredients just edited the amount of oil I put into it, keeps it from being overpowering and not as dangerous in the shower. Not to mention its dirt cheap and most women keep these basic staples stocked in their pantries already.

1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
1/4 cup Extra Light Olive Oil, can substitute another carrier oil of your choice
1 teaspoon Vitamin E (cut open Vitamin E liquid gel caps)
1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract , optional (or your favorite citrus essential oil)

In a medium mixing bowl, combine oil, vitamin E and vanilla. Add the brown sugar and mix well.

To Use: In the shower, apply to skin and rinse. Can be used daily. I use it as my last step before getting out of the shower. Not recommended for use in a bath tub due to the sugars.

I have the WORST itchy legs. Its worse after I shave, and gets even worse (if thats possible) a day

I have the WORST itchy legs. Its worse after I shave, and gets even worse (if thats possible) a day or so after I shave. Luckily, I get a break in the winter when I shave about once a month. Gross, right? But I have to! They itch SO bad that I wake up in the middle of the night scratching, and dont realize I have literally scratched my legs raw and bloody. Even more gross right?

Now that it is spring/summer time, Im having to shave every other day again, and I cant sleep at night. Ive read a lot online and I found that there are many MANY other women with my same problem and no solution. Doctors try to put them on meds or tell them to change soaps, and the common story is that they have all tried everything- hot water, cold water, different water, soaps, shave gels, neither one, different razors, new razors more often, organic scrubs and washes, oral medications, different lotions- and NOTHING WORKS!

I did find that the reason for the itch is that when the hairs grow back they get stuck behind dry skin, so it was suggested that I (we) try natural exfoliants. Some say it worked, some didnt. But I happened to have shaved the day before yesterday, so I itched BAD yesterday, and I was willing to try anything.

Anyway, here is the recipe I made up, using several other recipes as a guideline.

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup sea salt
2 tbsp honey
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp olive oil (I would have preferred almond or sunflower oil, but I didnt have any)

And since I was already in my baking ingredients, I ate a few chocolate chips. Mmmmm!

I mixed it all together in a bowl, and rubbed it on my legs in a circular motion. Then I shaved. And did it again.

There is enough left over for me to exfoliate again after my shower today. Like my little jarring method?

Had I not spread this all over my legs, it just might have been a good start for a cookie recipe! For now, Ill just be happy smelling like a cookie. A freshly shaved, non-itchy cookie.

By the way, Ill update later as to whether or not it worked. For now, though, its working!!! YAY!

I’ve been really caught up on this whole exfoliating thing lately… mainly because it mak

I’ve been really caught up on this whole exfoliating thing lately… mainly because it makes your skin super soft and more touchable.

A simple nudge on the warm always generates a great response… I love it!

In all honesty I can say that there really isn’t a lotion that I use to make my skin soft and plush. Actually, scratch that… baby oil gel works wonders right out of the shower. Anyway, I’ve been experimenting with exfoliating different parts of the body other than the obvious.

First, try exfoliating your LIPS. Your lips always get dry, especially during the winter, and sometimes can leave them looking crusty and unattractive (even with your alleged lip hydrant). Dry skin can sit on the surface, and who wants to kiss that? Mix a little brown sugar and water until it gets to a pastes’ consistency. Slather onto your lips, rub together and rinse for smoother lips.

You can also exfoliate your ARMPITS. I know personally, that scrubbing with a washcloth doesn’t get rid of a darkening pit. My absolute favorite exfoliant is Elizabeth Arden’s Green Tea Scrub (it’s not discontinued, but any sugar scrub works just fine).

Exfoliating your ELBOWS also helps to cut down on darkening. Same goes for the knees. Sloughing away that dead skin can help to reveal the radiant skin underneath!

Give it a shot, you honestly have nothing to lose. When you exfoliate it’s kind of like shedding skin. A newer you comes out of the shower looking better than ever!

Sephora also has a Sugar Scrub that will be in my bathroom soon! I’m an exfoliating FREAK! If you think I’m crazy, think again. It’s a cheap spa treatment and leaves you skin more supple than a newborns. Try it!

I’ve been thinking a lot about the push and pull of inspiration and distraction the past few days. I can’t seem to balance the two out.

The house is a mess. That pile of papers and shoes and yarn and odds and ends go untouched (but not unnoticed) for another weekend.

But last weekend I:

Baked beer bread.

And made homemade truffles

And drew a silly picture for my Valentine.

Oh and whipped up a batch of brown sugar scrub.

And started the new week with Valentines Day dinner a day late,

process? Yep, me too. But were can you find a scrub like that? Nope, you don’t have to spend hours online looking for it, just walk into your kitchen.

Your kitchen? Sounds too good to be true. But with a few household items, brown sugar, olive oil, vanilla, and a couple other things you can be scrub-ified in no time.

First item, brown sugar. Who new something could be so yummy and so good for your skin. It’s less harsh then normal sugar, and better smelling, plus it melts with water so it’s impossible to over scrub. Take around 2 cup for you whole body.

Second item, olive oil. Olive oil is a great moisturizer and will leave your skin baby soft. Mix in about 1-1 1/2 table spoons.

Third item, vanilla. Mix in as much as wanted, I suggest 2 drops. The soul purpose of this is the smell. Mmmm, mmm!

This item is optional, a couple drops of lemon, or lemon extract. Once again the purpose is mainly for the smell.

What I like the best after using this scrub? The smell! I end up smelling like warm cookies. Yummy!

She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. (Proverbs 31:13)

At the bottom of the closet in our spare bedroom, there is a large Rubbermaid tub. The tub belongs to me and holds a variety of interesting items: vegetable glycerin, oatmeal, aloe vera jelly, brown sugar, joboba oil, olive oil, several essential oils, Epsom and Kosher salts, honey, as well as many measuring cups and spoons. I call these items the tools of my trade.

Whenever I bring my tub down to the kitchen JT usually says, “Hmm, I see my little alchemist is about to begin her work. I wonder what she’ll be making today.” I love to mix up heavenly-scented, skin pampering treats for me and my friends.

One of my favorite treats to make is a brown sugar body scrub. I found this simple recipe online a while ago, but I do not recall where I found it. It makes a thick, rich sugar scrub that leaves your skin soft, smooth, and smelling delicious!

Simple Brown Sugar Scrub
1 cup ground oatmeal (I use our blender to grind it.)
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup Epsom salt
½ cup scented body lotion
¼ cup baby oil

Combine oatmeal, white sugar, brown sugar, and Epsom salt in a large bowl. Add the baby oil and lotion and stir into a thick paste. This makes enough scrub to fill a 16 ounce container.

To use: Stir the scrub to redistribute the oils that have risen to the top. Apply the scrub in the shower after your skin has been cleansed. Place a bit of the scrub in your hand or onto a bath mitt and massage it into your skin (from your shoulders to your feet) using gentle circular motions. Do not rub too vigorously or you will scratch and damage your skin. Rinse with warm water, pat yourself dry, and apply lotion to your skin. When done, be sure to rinse out the tub and shower fully because the oils in the scrub will make it slippery.

Though this recipe is great as is, I’ve modified it to include more natural products such as aloe vera jelly and jojoba oil. Tinker with the recipe to customize it to your liking. Play with the ingredients to create a scrub that suits your skin type (dry or oily) and matches your scent preferences.
