Am fost unul din utilizatorii Google Browser Sync pe vremea când încă mai foloseam Firefox. Ideea era foarte simplă dar oferea portabilitatea scurtăturilor web cât și a parolelor și a altor date din browser. Proiectul a fost oprit în momentul în care apăruse o nouă versiune Firefox și își facuseră apariția alte servicii asemănătoare; Google a decis oprirea proiectului prin neactualizarea extensiei și mai târziu oprirea serviciului complet.

Apoi am încercat și alte alternative, ca LastPass, dar îmi lipsea simplitatea specifică aplicațiilor Google, prezentă și in Google Browser Sync.

Folosesc Google Chrome încă de la primele versiuni, pe canalul de dezvoltare, și sunt foarte mulțumit de ceea ce oferă el: simplitate și rapiditate.

Introducerea sincronizării scurtăturilor web în cadrul browserului Chrome este o supriză placută și după o zi de testare simplă mă pot declara mulțumit. Desigur mi-ar plăcea și o iconiță draguță undeva în browser care să îmi indice momentele de sincronizare(cum era la Google Browser Sync), eventual configurarea periodicității sincronizării dar sunt sigur că Google va avea grijă și de îmbunătățirea serviciului până la lansarea în versiunea stabilă a browserului.

Notă: Pentru cine nu știe, pentru folosirea sincronizării în Chrome e nevoie de ultima versiune de Google Chrome din canalul dev, pornirea browserului cu flag-ul – -enable-sync(as in cratimăcratimăenablecratimăsync) și de introducerea unui cont Google în setările browserului.

Google Answers

Question and Answer service. Allows users to post questions and also answer the queries of other users. Google has stopped this service on November 26, 2006; luckly they have archived all past information’s and posts for reference.

Google Browser Sync

Google Browser Sync freeware from Google came online on 8 June 2006, and as of June 2008 has been discontinued. This allows users of Mozilla Firebox up to versions 2.x to synchronize their web browser settings across multiple computers via the Internet. It is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 (and Google will not make it compatible, see below).

Google Deskbar

A desktop mini browser feature was integrated or similar feature was there in Google desktop.

Free Search

Discontinued with the introduction of Google Custom Search.

Hello

A feature which allowed users to send images to their blog, this service was discontinued with the arrival of the Picasa much superior than former.

Joga Bonito

A social networking site like Orkut, but meant for football fans collaboration of Nike and Google.

Lively

3D animated chat program launched on July 9, 2008 and closed December 31, 2008.

Local

Discontinued and with a new integration of Google Maps.

Page Creator

With the arrival of Google Sites this service was discontinued by Google and all previous info’s were reinstated to Google Sites. By 2008 they stopped accepting sign ups. Preferably an old man in a new cloth with a bit more of resistance.

Catalogs

Search engine for over 6,600 print catalogs, which are acquired through Optical character recognition. This service has been discontinued January 2009.

Dodgeball

Google’s acquired mobile social service site which stared in 2005 discontinued by 2009 with initial of Google latitude.

Google Notebook

Perhaps a big upset for its previous users, this allow users View and add notes to your Google Notebook. This feature was discontinued January 2009.

I’ve pretty much had enough of Mozilla’s Weave. It’s a real shame as it looked like a really good tool but it’s just so unreliable.

For the last week or so I have been unable to login and sync, consulting the activity log told me that my username and/or password were not recognised. Strange, as I have kept the same details saved ever since I started using the service.

Tonight I finally found a password reminder link on services.mozilla.com but to my utter annoyance, when I filled in my username I was told that my account did not exist! Excuse me?

So, apart from the fact that I can no longer sign in, I was getting pretty tired of the frustratingly slow sync times, especially when I just wanted to shut down my computer and get the hell out of the office!

With the news that Google have just launched their brand spanking new browser Chrome, it makes me wonder if Browser Sync was discontinued as a similar tool will be released for Chrome. Time will tell but I’m seriously tempted to just get rid of Weave and look at alternatives. Delicious seems like a reasonable option.

I wonder if anyone has made any progress on getting Browser Sync to work with Firefox 3 yet. Anyone know?

Google is now distributing the Browser Sync source code under the BSD license and is making it available through a Subversion source control repository on the Google Code website.

Although not much now, it would be a good idea to keep an eye there.

Al momento sto provando Debian Etch (di nuovo). Come credo tutti, non riesco a fare a meno di almeno due estensioni: Google Toolbar e Google Browser Sync.

Come dovreste sapere, il team di Mozilla ha proibito di utilizzare il branding “Firefox” al progetto Debian, dal momento che all’interno dello stesso venivano effettuati alcuni cambiamenti, quali l’utilizzo di un logo personalizzato.

La decisione finale è stata quella di effettuare un fork, Iceweasel, che sarà sincronizzato con il codice di Firefox >= 2.0 (la versione attualmente presente nei repository di Etch è la 2.0.0.2).

L’aver cambiato nome al browser ha imposto anche un cambiamento alla stringa User-Agent. Per questo motivo, le applicazioni web che utilizzano questo campo per determinare che browser si sta usando (quale, ad esempio, quella che avvia il download delle suddette estensioni di Google dopo aver accettato la licenza) non funzioneranno più.

In realtà, almeno nei due casi su citati, per saltare l’ostacolo basta aprire una nuova finestra o un nuovo tab nel browser, e inserire gli indirizzi diretti da qui scaricare le estensioni. Oppure, molto più semplicemente, fare click sui link che seguono:
