Still give a break for the beauty stuff

I’m a Firefox user, also a so-called fan.

And just a brief description, Firefox is a web-browser created by Mozilla Foundation. Latest information indicates its share about 25% of global web traffic (see here); which means now the world’s number 2 web browser, second from the Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Until now, Firefox application has been downloaded over 1.2 million copies, and still counting.

As a fan, I encourage everyone who pass by and read this blog to start using this wonderful browser right away. See this link for Why will it be better to switch over to Firefox ?

Needless to say about the better features and performance ; online marketing is the key success factor of Firefox, and perhaps, the entire Mozilla’s community. Using the right marketing tools, channels, and techniques, Mozilla has established a true world-wide community. Million of people around the world are jointly working toward the project’s objective (i.e.; making a better browser) everyday.

Undoubtedly, by leveraging this world-wide resources, Mozilla foundation could run the projects very successful at low cost. Online marketing plays its role as a way to form up a community of people, either they are users who want to share feed back on the product’s performance, or  super-experienced software developers who want to share their skill fixing bugs, whoever you are, the community can pull you to the online community, “get involve”, and be part of the product you like.

Need to communicate to the public ? – let the people speak for you

Need feedback from users (customers) ? – let they talk to you directly

Need someone help fixing error ? – let people help fix it for you

Need someone support your users ? – let people help each others (for you)

A good way to look at what Mozilla’s marketing team is doing with Firefox community is to look at spreadfirefox.com. The web site is a central playground of Mozilla’s marketing campaign; called “Spread Firefox” aiming to get people involve and participate with Firefox activities. By achieving this, it is the way to communicate the product new features to the public using “word-of-mouth” style. Also several activities have been launch regularly to gain public awareness. Last year (2008) they launched “Download Day” to promote Firefox 3.0 release. This year, they are having party globally, to celebrate 5 years anniversary of Firefox.

Not only as a fan, but also as a marketing student, I think it’s very interesting to keep looking at spreadfirefox.com activities and promotion. It gives me the view of marketing techniques, how they get people involve more and more from every places in the world, how do they get ideas from people (as to follow the philosophy of web2.0), or how do they come up with new ideas of marketing activities, all across the world, at a very low budget !!

Let’s see what they try to get people “ACTIVE“. Most of these ideas came from the contribution of the world-wide fans, not just from the marketing team !!

Ich glaube ich bin mal wieder der Einzige, der ein “Intensiv-Feature” einer Web2.0-Applikation nutzt: Die DM-Funktion von Twitter ersetzt einen großen Teil meiner Mails inzwischen. Was, wenn man nicht diszipliniert genug ist – hüstel – die unwichtigen DMs sofort zu löschen – hüstel, hüstel – zu einem großen DM-Haufen führt. Clevere Clients können natürlich auch DMs löschen, aber die Clients haben meistens nur einen begrenzten Ausschnitt des Archivs. Und wer bei Tweetdeck denkt, er hätte die DMs gelöscht muss nur einen Blick auf die Webseite von Twitter werfen…

Wer Tabula Rasa machen möchte, dem sei das Bookmarklet DM Deleter aka DM Whacker empfohlen. Einfach in die Favoritenleiste des Browsers der Wahl ziehen, dann auf die DM-Seite bei Twitter gehen und dann sieht das ungefährt so aus:

Achtung: Das Teil ist Beta – und ja, es löscht wirklich ALLE DMs wenn man das möchte. Also Vorsicht mit der Option “all dm’s” da oben. Man kann dann fernerhin noch auswählen ob man die DMs eines bestimmten Followers löschen möchte oder DMs mit einem bestimmten Text.

Das ist auf den ersten Blick sicherlich recht nützlich. Ich hätte aber gerne ein Tool, mit dem man alle DMs vor dem Löschen zumindest sieht und diese dann eventuell aussparen kann. Manche Information per DM möchte man ja dann doch noch längerfristig aufbewahren. Das kann man mit DM Wacker leider nicht, wer aber auf einen Schlag seine kompletten DMs löschen möchte für den ist das Tool genau richtig. Aber wie geschrieben: Vorsichtig, es ist Beta.

With the open sourcing of Google Chrome OS as Chromium OS project, people have started building the OS on their own and a couple of them can be found here and here. I have tried out the build that is available as a torrent mentioned in the TechCrunch article, but could not login to the OS (Network not connected and offline login failed) in neither VMWare nor VirtualBox on a Leopard. However, it logged in fine in VirtualBox on Ubuntu 9.10. The performance though was terribly bad. There is also a USB bootable image available here, which I have not tried out yet.

I have downloaded the Chromium source code and have built the OS image and ran it successfully on both VMWare and VirtualBox. The code is downloaded as a tarball for this build process. If you wish to make changes to the code and contribute, the source should be downloaded using git, in which case, the Chromium depot tools need to be installed as a prerequisite.

What is Chrome OS?

Chrome OS is a lightweight OS designed to be used by netbooks, focused only on the web. It is built on top of the Linux kernel and aims to be faster, simpler and secure.

What it is not?

Chrome OS is NOT a replacement for desktop operating systems. You can’t just go and replace your current OS with Chrome OS!

Build Process:

I have done the entire build on my 32 bit Ubuntu 9.10. The image works fine in VirtualBox in the same machine and also on VMWare in a Leopard. The steps in brief are:

1. Making the local repository
2. Creating the build environment
3. Including Chrome browser
4. Building the platform packages
5. Building the kernel
6. Building the final OS image
7. Converting the image to a VMWare image
8. Converting the image into a bootable USB disk (optional)

Creating the local repository took about an hour to complete. Other steps are relatively faster; the building of the platform packages and the kernel took 10 minutes each and the final OS image itself took 5 minutes. Conversion into a VMWare image requires qemu. Do a sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm before starting the conversion.

How does it work?

The OS is nothing but a browser, well almost! The OS boots and you have a nice blue screen (no, not the BSOD ) asking for the username and password. A Gmail account is required to login to the OS. The build number below the login screen is unique for each build of the Chromium OS image.

On login, the user is directly taken to the Chrome browser and everything the OS has to offer is available right there. It’s all about the web!

Clicking on the Chrome logo on the top left corner gives you a list of web apps (even Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail). Orkut is missing, but Facebook isn’t Almost all the websites that I use regularly worked fine. Flash too works great without any noticeable problems.

On the downside, command line access sucks (Do Ctrl + Alt + T to access the terminal). Typing ‘exit’ at the command line does not take you back to the browser right away. It never did for me, at least! I always ended up typing ‘exit’ about 4-5 times and suddenly the browser will appear. Also the OS becomes unresponsive in both VMWare and VirtualBox if left unused for a few minutes.

The minimalistic UI seems to be a cautious approach. There are two themes available right now – GTK+ and Classic. The look feel at the moment is not at all good. But we can expect Google (and the Open Source community!) to improve on this in the coming months.

The OS is targeted at those who use computers almost solely for accessing the Internet. It is simple and nicely done. But the performance of the Chrome OS is not satisfactory on a virtual machine. The user interface also needs to improve quite a bit.

Keeping all the data in the cloud could be a double-edged sword with potential paranoid users trying to avoid Chrome OS just for that reason. Google is betting on the fact that the market for net-books will increase in the future and that users who want to connect to the Internet fast would prefer an OS which lets them do that without much difficulties.

Photowhat? Yeah, that’s right, these guys have gone and created a streamlined version of Photoshop (Elements if you like…) that works in your browser. For. Free. Not quite sure how they’ve got away with ripping off Adobe’s UI and menus but it’s bloody impressive that they have and all the key functions are here. For a bit of light web-image-manipulation-on-the-go, this could be just the thing!

gerade habe ich den neuen opera browser (version 10.10) heruntergeladen. ich kann nur sagen das ich mit diesem browser sehr zufrieden bin. testet den 10.10 doch auch mal.

Ez jó hír. A SeaMonkey ugyanis a régi Mozilla Suite utódja. Ez még a régi (nem-)biznisz, itt még érezni az alapítványi hátteret, ez még az .org-os nem a .com-os Mozilla.

Suite-hoz illően benne van a böngésző, a levelező, a html-
szerkesztő és a chat is. És minden platformra (Win, Mac, Lx). Windowson el is kezdtem állandóra használni.

Al sinds februari heeft Google laten weten dat er voor de browser Chrome extensies beschikbaar zouden komen. Tot nu toe was dit alleen nog voor de ontwikkelaars-versie beschikbaar. Het lijkt nu toch ook echt voor de ‘normale’ gebruiker beschikbaar te worden. Gisteren kondigde Google namelijk aan dat het Chrome Extension dashboard is geopend.

Als dit werkelijk aanslaat zou dit een grote stap kunnen betekenen in de strijd tussen de browsers. Google Chrome staat bekend om zijn snelheid en troeft de andere browsers met grote voorsprong af. Het nadeel tot nu toe was echter het ontbreken van de extensies.

Word Google Chrome hiermee de nieuwe Firefox? Of zal Firefox terugslaan met een nieuwe, snellere browser? Post jullie mening in de comments hieronder.

I have two computers. A five year old laptop, still going strong with the original operating system installed on it. It is pretty bare in terms of ad ons and other apps on it, but it is functional. It works as a writing implement and as a way to show vids (via the HD or the DVD drive) on the go. I also have a newer, flashier desktop, just over a year old, with all the original bits, plus lots of funky ad ons. It really is a souped up machine.

Anyhow, switched on my laptop this morning to do my blog and when logging into gimpspace, (that link will soon no longer work) I got this message:

All good things come to an end. My computer is no longer cool enough to hang out with the hip young things and Tom. So sod it, I can no longer be bothered with myspace. It looks like another ‘bye-bye’ alongside my facebook exit. But unlike the facebook drop out, this has been forced upon me by myspace itself. I was quite happy to keep the account ticking over and to copy and paste my blog onto my profile but as I have no urgent need to upgrade my laptop, then my hand is forced and I must say toodles to ‘Tom & Co’.

Interestingly, ‘myspace’ gave me my first outlet online. Long before I actually ‘made’ my own websites, or even got blogging seriously, my outlet to the wider world was via myspace. It is with a slight twinge that I am deleting this account, but with regards to the bigger picture, who really cares? My laptop has outlived my gimpspace account. Let us see what else it outlives…

Si tratta di un sistema operativo basato su una piattaforma linux che nasce con l’idea di un sistema pensato quasi esclusivamente per internet, tutto il sistema operativo un un grande browser che ingloba la navigazione web, social network, mail, video, musica, documenti.
Promette di essere molto leggero e stabile.
