There are days when my life feels like this, when memories fill your head and you can’t get past them.  As much as I try to believe that you can’t change the past, the difficulty lies in if/how you allow the past to affect the present.  Even the most clear-thinking person allows themselves to drift back and wonder “what if..”.

I am happy to report that, despite my curious nature, I did NOT go into the belly of the beast on Friday.

Black Friday is for crazy people.  Those who make the choice to rise too early and stake their claim at whatever retail store, are either smart shoppers or off their rocker.

I guess it depends on your perspective.  Some would say that having a plan, shopping as a team, and work the stores to their advantage is smart shopping.  I will give them that much.  It’s a logical approach to the chaos that is Black Friday.

But most shoppers aren’t like that.  It’s a mad dash, grab what you can and sort through it later.  That’s a more primeval approach, and the most entertaining.  Nothing more stimulating than standing in the aisles at Wally World and watch the trailer trash duke it out over a cheap, “Made In China”, piece of junk.  I work with a “kid” – some kid, he’s twenty years younger than I – who works at Wally World.  Some of the stories he’s told are too much.  One example are the people who slept in the aisles, waiting for the sale to begin.  That’s a bit extreme. 

So, I am proud to say I avoided that scene, partly because I work at the ungodly hour.  But if I had the time and opportunity, I still would avoid that scene like the plague.  The closest I came to penetrating the perimeter and going deep into enemy territory was making a stop at our locally-owned music store for some fresh additions to the Christmas/Solstice music library.  It was on the way home.  I could easily avoid the mall traffic.  And it was worth it.  I was hoping to find a rare John Fahey Christmas CD, but no luck.  What I did find was just as good:  some Windham Hill Christmas compilations.  

I love the WH catalog.  It brings a sense of serenity to the chaotic sturm and drang that is the Christmas season.  I got a good laugh many years ago, when I was working for the college radio station.  George Winston was all the rage at the time.  But Somebody got the bright idea that if it’s instrumental, then it’s jazz.

Nice try.  Then  somebody in the music press referred to their music as  “New Age”. 

Wrong again.  How about  calling it “accoustic music”.  Pure and simple.   It’s another example of how the record industry loves to label and compartmentalize music.  They need to do it for marketing purposes.  They deduce that if it doesn’t have a label that identifies the music, then no one will buy it.  No wonder the recording industry is losing money to digital downloads.  They’re so busy trying to keep the old marketing formula, charging outrageous prices for CD’s and not grasping the concept that it’s so much cheaper to download.

Let’s move on, shall we.

Windham Hill artists are great to listen to in the evening.  The music helps me relax, and WH is definitely relaxing.  It’s also great for setting a mood.  It’s been awhile since I’ve gone down that road.

Sometimes, while listening to a new disc,  I’ll discover some interesting takes on a familiar tune.  I put on one of the WH Christmas discs when I came home.  I sat down in The Man Cave to unwind a bit, closed my eyes to take in the music, and sat bolt upright, surprised by one of the tunes.  The artist alludes me at the moment, but it was a guitarist interpretting “Angels We Have Heard On High”.  The surprising, and very cool part, was that it was  played as a Brazilian samba.  It was great, it totally worked, and it made me smile.

Personalisation

Personalisation is a technique provided by many websites, it involves gathering user data that provides the end user with content relevant to their individual preferences. I am firmly in support of web personalisation, having examined the effect and gained from it personally.

The initial advantage it that it enables the browsing experience to be more enjoyable as it made more efficient for both parties. A fundamental advantage of this method as it provides a better platform for building a one to one customer relationship. User’s are more likely to return and purchase from a company familiar to them as it caters to their needs through personalised content.

Personalisation is becoming more widespread, examples of personalised content include Youtube, Itunes (Genius feature) and HMV. Amazon is an example of good practice in website personalisation. The retailer have refined their procedure so the most relevant content is published to the user.

There are several instances, however, when personalisation does not work correctly, and is seen as a liability for a customer’s shopping experience.  The method is often prone to error, recommending incorrectly to the user. It is also too dependent on the volume required from the user. This means it needs a large amount of varied customer data in order to recommend the appropriate content.

Pada saat di warnet, terkadang akses internet terasa melambat, mungkin dikarenakan banyaknya jumlah pengunjung yang memakai akses tersebut. Dalam kata lain, Bandwidth yang tersedia di setiap user semakin kecil.

Salah satu cara untuk memprecepat kinerja Mozilla Firefox adalah dengan memanfaatkan setting Mozilla Firefox tersebut. Adapun langkah-langkahnya sebagai berikut:

1. Buka halaman baru, lalu ketik “about:config” di address bar

2. Cari kata-kata di bawah ini lalu rubahlah seperti yang ada di sebelahnya:

• network.http.pipelining; “false” dirubah menjadi “true”
• network.http.pipelining.maxrequest; “4″ dirubah menjadi “30″
• network.http.proxy.pipelining; “false” dirubah menjadi “true”

NB. untuk merubah “false” ->”true” atau “4″ -> “30″ bisa dilakukan dengan double klik.

3. Setelah itu, klik kanan pada bagian yang kosong/putih lalu pilih new, integer lalu isikan kolom pertama dengan “nglayout.initialpaint.delay”. Tekan enter satu kali dan masukkan angka “0″ lalu enter.

4. Restart ulang Mozilla Firefoxnya.

SAN FRANSISCO – Mailing list Bug Traq mempublikasikan data adanya jenis serangan baru yang menyasar browser Internet Explorer (IE) Microsoft.

Menurut Symantec, serangan tersebut bertujuan

untuk mengkritik kelemahan yang terdapat pada sistem cascading style sheet (CSS).

“Setelah melakukan uji coba menyeluruh, kami menemukan bahwa serangan ini menyasar IE 6 dan 7. Serangan tersebut untuk menunjukkan adanya kelemahan dalam sistem CSS Microsoft. Kami harap ke depannya kelemahan itu bisa segera diperbaiki,” tulis juru bicara Symantec dala

m blog resmi mereka, Senin (23/11/2009).

“Saat ini terjadi, penyerang memiliki kemampuan untuk menyisipkan serangan pada website, menginfeksi pengakses potensial. Terlebih dahulu, mereka akan mengarahkan pengakses pada laman web atau situs bervirus yang telah mereka rancang,” terangnya.

Dalam kasus seperti ini si penyerang memerlukan JavaScript untuk membobol IE. Akibatnya pengguna IE harus menonaktifkan JavaScript dan hanya mengunjungi website yang terpercaya hingga Microsoft menambal kelemahan ini.

Browser tabs are a great idea. You can open various sites at the same time and flick between them. You can save the lot and have them load up next time you browse the net. This is useful until there are so many tabs it takes time to scroll from one to the other.  This is a problem for me these days as I don’t get to surf the net to the extent that I might like.

Said offspring are not immune to lying about their age to acquire access to social networking sites. My view is that if the little ones are being this street smart the parents should adopt the “if you can’t beat them then join them” approach – sit down with the children and engage with them, discussing what websites are really all about.

I was browsing a gay social networking site when I came across this headline. It said that one must be able to satisfy his partner in order to be truly happy in life.

What was that supposed to mean? I thought of sending this guy a message, or a really violent reaction to be exact, but hey, there had been a lot of similar hair-raising headlines before this one. So instead of being unproductive, I should take this time to collect some headlines that really blew me out of my senses.

“Guys, back off! I’ve been hurt too much already. Here’s my number 09***-***-****.” – I messaged this guy and pointed out that he is self-contradicting. He deleted his number afterward.

“No conversations to those with no face pictures, and I don’t have one. My body is enough.” – If his rule applies to him, no one should be sending him a message.

“Wanna have some fun? Just joking, I’m not that kind of person.” – Jokes are really half-meant.

“I’m in love with myself and I want to find guys who are willing to have sex with me.” – There are more narcissistic guys in there, but I have to say that this is the most blatant one.

“Just hanging out and looking for somebody hell worthy of a time to make life worth miserable.” – Just what is he trying to say?

“Hi, what we are doing? Bye.”- I don’t know, but it made me laugh.

“It’s not easy to be born a man but it’s too hard to live like a real man. Relationship is the greatest approdishock.” – Aphrodisiac, anyone?

“Surviving the mind field out there.” – He must have meant mine field. But if he really meant mind field, he must be a really stupid guy, perhaps a troglodyte from the early periods of the uncivilized society.

“Hi, this is ******* from Baguio City. I’m just here to gain friends. It’s a boring life, work and house only. For security reasons, I cannot post my pictures, but here’s my Friendster account: *****@*****.com.” – But he is willing to share more than pictures.

“Straight doing unstraight stuff.” – Then you are not straight.

“I am not here for sex, I am here for friends. Don’t bother me if your intention is to have sex because I am not interested. But I go for sex.” – So is he or is he not after sex?

“Hi! Anybody there? Allow access to recalcitrant verminous annelid, hippopotomonstrosesquidalean as well.” – He must have copied it from some trivia page.

“My thalamus dictates that I’m emotionally unstable but I’m happy that my hypothalamus releases natural opiates.” – A Nursing student who is trying to show that he is studying his lessons.

I would have to say that I edited these headlines to maintain the integrity of my blog. Anyway, what you say can really reflect the contents of your head. In journalism, the headline says it all. If you make a bad statement for yourself, then you are sure to make a laughing-stock out of yourself. This is not to say though that all the guys in that site are dumb. There are a few exceptions, and the rest are about banalities, picture exchange, and of course, sex.

So what am I doing there? I am still hoping to chat with someone really interesting and be a real exception.

While browsing through the countless images on FFFFOUND! I discovered something about myself that I find quite interesting…enough to share it with you.

I’m drawn to photographs of people’s shoes.

I’m not sure why, but when the photograph is from the waist down, I find it a lot more interesting than if it was a shoulder upwards photograph.

To me, there’s more mystery to the photograph and there’s room for personal opinions as to the story behind the photo. Full body shots just lack the allure of photographs that leave things out.

It’s weird how all of a sudden you can discover something about yourself you never knew at the most random moments.

I’ve found countless full body photographs that I love, but if there was a full body and a waist down photograph of the same subject, I’d prefer the latter.

Good news, everyone! Apple’s app store is notoriously messy, disorganized, etc, etc, etc and mplayit has decided to do something about it!

And in a rather ingenious way too, may I add.

Who better to recommend apps to you than your friends? mplayit has built a Facebook app on which you can recommend and share iPhone apps with your friends. Additionally, apps come with full videos, pictures, and text describing functionality.

The smartest thing about this is that the social media network already exists. The developers don’t have to wait for the iPhone app sharing network to slowly build itself. Oh Facebook, you really are useful after all!

I spend an awful lot of time poking around in the App Store in both iTunes and on my iPhone, just in the hopes of finding something new and exciting to download and use on my device. It’s not an ideal situation, and I often wish Apple (s aapl) would throw out its tired model and completely restructure the App Store from the ground up.

There’s little chance of that happening, but a new Facebook app could help make the App Store more navigable, and do so with a little help from your friends. Mplayit is a new service being offered on Facebook that aims to bring some sense to the jungle that is the 100,000-strong App Store using a more intelligent browsing system based on recommendations and demos.

The idea is that there’s no one better to recommend iPhone apps you’d like than your friends. Using Mplayit, friends can make recommendations via the app which will appear on their profile page and in the news feed. That way, you’ll have a trustworthy source when you’re shopping for new software for your device.

By far the most useful aspect of Mplayit during my brief use of it was the app recommendations and shared apps. The rest, including popularity, search and categories, is already available to users via the App Store itself.

I’m not exactly sure how apps get onto the recommended list, since I would assume that they would be the ones which are the most recommended, but then what’s to differentiate them from the shared app? Whatever the methodology behind their selection, the fact remains that they are good picks, and well-deserving of attention. The list provides a good variety, too, covering apps with a range of functions instead of just presenting, say, all the top Twitter apps.

The best part of Mplayit, from the standpoint of people who need to see to believe, is that most apps come complete with videos and images previewing the functionality of the software running on an actual iPhone, and a full text description, too. That’s what puts Mplayit ahead of other iPhone app discovery sites like AppShopper.com or 148apps. Of course, each app also includes buy links that redirect you to the App Store, and a link through which you can add the program to your collection, which helps Mplayit track app popularity and recommendation information.

Many people are reluctant to use Facebook apps because of privacy concerns and fears of spamming the news feeds of friends, but after trying out the service for a little while, I haven’t found any cause for concern with Mplayit. The best part is that you can still use most aspects of the app without granting it access to your profile information.

Mobile ad firm AdMob recently released a study that illustrated the massive growth in web-capable smart phone ownership over the past year. A year ago, the Motorola Razr was the top phone in the U.S., and the iPhone was the only unit in the top ten with touchscreen capabilities. Only a year later, half the phones on the list have touchscreens, six have wi-fi capabilities, and six have app stores.

As mobile web browsers increase in popularity, the magazine and newspaper industries have no choice but to play catch-up. Many magazines now have a digital editions that you can flip through on your phone, and prominently feature downloadable apps as well, like this Better Homes and Gardens app for the Blackberry. E-readers like Kindle are also increasing as popularity. Smart phones have already become part of the fabric of journalism.

Print journalism is still trying to find a way to catch up with the traditional internet; how can it cope with yet another sea change in the way people access content? Just how important is it to own a smart phone if you’re working in the journalism industry?

I’m back.  This time, I am walking a bit humbler, but a little bit jaded and stunned.  I made a promise to My Love that I would not write about her, and I will keep it.

But I return with a boatload of questions about myself.  Some are ones that I cannot answer.  That’s why I am going into therapy.  The appointment has been made  – November 30.  As much as this forum has allowed me to do similar work as therapy, I need the feedback and support that you cannot give me.

I will continue to write, but nothing similar to my posts on My Love.  At the moment, I wonder how my life will play out over the next year.  People keep telling me that it will get better.  I heard the same things after my divorce, but I had My Love as a sounding board.  That’s why I need therapy; I need the feedback.

SO……..

I’ll be back from time to time.  Nothing of the regularity for the last four months, but you never know.  I might get on a streak and then you’ll get sick of me.

If you surf the web for just one hour a day…that will add up to 15 days a year or over two full weeks at the computer.

That’s only half the story as since most of us are awake approximately 17 hours a day (as we need to sleep) the number is 21.5 days of usable time.

If you factor eating and other necessary functions, that number climbs to the majority of a month of usable time over the year.

Now consider how much time is being taken from you if you average even more time on the web.

Surfing web pages is like the digits in Pi (3.14159…) in that they are both unending, seemingly unrelated, aimless strings of data.

To be fair, at least sometimes the first few digits of Pi can be useful in mathematics.

One way to discourage an internet binge is to limit the comforts when browsing the web.

1) Adjust the monitor so it is too bright or too dark.

2) Turn the monitor 15 degrees in another direction so one can see what is on the screen but not with ease.

3) Choose a chair that one would normally not use (it is not balanced right, rickety, shakes etc.).

4) Keep the door/window open on a cold day.

If these ideas don’t do it, how about coming up with something else that works?

Malam yang dingin, membuat seorang mahasiswa berjalan sendirian yang larut dengan kesendiriannya karena mengikuti kuliah di IT Telkom yang penuh dengan duka dan lara.

Mahasiswa keren itu sedang mencari-cari kuncinya yang hilang. Mahasiswa tersebut bernama G@#$fg(taulaaa). Karena habis kuliah information retrieval jadi harus pandai-pandai searching kunci yang hilang.

Beeeuhh ... datang preman

Tiba-tiba ada mahasiswa lain datang, dan meneriaki mahasiswa tersebut dengan teriakan,”Maling… Ayo Hajar!” Tiga mahasiswa tersebut mempunyai informasi yang sama tentang keberadaan maling yang selalu meresahkan mahasiswa.

Ketika berhasil menemukan kuncinya, dan berusaha menyalakan motornya, mahasiswa keren tersebut bingung dengan adanya teriakan maling tersebut. Mahasiswa keren hanya bisa bingung dan pasrah, karena tidak bisa melakukan information retrieval.

Di bali “bade” merupakan wadah yang digunakan untuk meng-arak orang yang telah meninggal dunia(layon) secara beramai-ramai oleh keturunannya dan masyarakat setempat menuju ke kuburan/setra untuk diaben. Hal ini sebagai bentuk penghormatan kepada orang yang telah meninggal dunia.

pemidahan ke wadag

setelah sampai dikuburan, layon dipindahkan dari bade ke wadag untuk dilakukan prosesi ngaben bersama wadag tersebut. Wadag merupakan sebagai simbol kendaraan sang roh menuju ke alam roh (swah loka).

setelah menjalani berbagai tahap upacara ngaben barulah dilakukan pembakaran layon. Hindu percaya manusia terdiri dari 5 unsur(api,tanah,air,udara,ether) dan jika manusia tersebut meninggal maka harus dikembalikan seperti semula. Pembakaran layon merupakan prosesi untuk mengembalikan layon menjadi unsur api,tanah, dan udara.

dalam ngaben setelah pembakaran layon maka layon yang telah dikembalikan menjadi tanah(abu), maka prosesi selanjutnya abu tersebut akan diarak menuju pantai untuk dilakukan pengembalian ke unsur air.

sesampainya abu layon di pantai, maka selanjutnya abu layon tersebut akan dihanyutkan ke tengah pantai untuk mengembalikan layon ke unsur air

Malam yang indah.

Malam yang indah. Mobil-mobil berlalu lalang sesuai dengan kehendak pemiliknya. Mencari keinginan dan informasi yang diinginkan oleh pemiliknya. Karena setiap orang pasti akan menemukan informasi tentang arti hidup ini.

Berkas cahaya pada malam ini menandakan cahaya juga bisa memberikan informasi kepada semua orang. Berkas cahaya ini menunjukan tingkat kesibukan di kota besar. Infromation retrieval.. itulah yang terpenting saat ini.

Tempat makan

Tempat makan di pinggir jalan. Semua tempat makan punya keunikan masing-masing. Pada tempat ini memberikan informasi tentang dinginnya malam, sunyinya malam. Semuanya tergantung kita dalam menggali infromasi tersebut.

Nyala lampu pada malam hari, menandakan aktifitas yg masih berlangsung meskipun hari sudah malam. Lampu ini memberikan informasi kepada kita tentang kesetiaan lampu untuk selalu menerangi manusia.

As a belated gift, I will continue to use you for the foreseeable future as my primary web browser. That is until something better comes out – Google’s Chrome is supposed to come out before Christmas on the Mac.

Can’t believe Firefox is five. Here is my journey. In early 2006 I only knew of Internet Explorer as the main web browser. In Spring 2006, I jumped onto Firefox on the recommendation from a close friend. He was using the fox and was zipping about the web, adding extensions and opening windows in TABS. Firefox was the only browser on the block to have tabbed browsing at the time. It changed the way I browsed. I never looked back. IE was archaic compared to FF.  At the end of August 2007, I bought a MacBook. With OS X 10.4 came Safari. Safa-what? I need my FF was what I thought. FF was slow as hell on my MB. It hoggged RAM like no other, spiked the CPU, heated up the computer…it was nightmare. I eloped with Safari. When Firefox 3.0 was set to go down on June 30, 2008, featuring major RAM reductions and faster page rendering, I joined the millions of people worldwide in downloading it on day one to help set the world record. Indeed, it was much improved. I abandoned Safari and switched back to the fox. I’ve been using FF 3.5 as my main browser ever since.

Whew. That was a mouthful wasn’t it? Even with Safari’s 4.0 being snappy, I can’t live without the plug-ins/extensions that can be installed for FF. Take one plug-in called “Ad-Block Plus.” It blocks advertisements on all web pages. I installed it earlier this year and I haven’t seen an advertisement on the web ever since. No wonder I’ve been so much more productive this past year!

Firefox is an open-source web browser. Because the code is not locked in a closet somewhere sealed beneath 10 layers bullet proof glass, anyone who wants to modify it to their liking can do so. Customization is key for a useful FF experience. No two installations of FF will be the same if each one is customized to the individual.

Here’s to many more years of Firefox! As a bonus, let’s see if the majority of people even know what a browser is.

Google’s Chrome will bring some competition to the web browser arena. It is already my web browser of choice on a Windows machine. The beauty of Chrome lies in the small application size, stripped down interface and FAST FAST page rendering like no other. Chrome is already for Windows and is expected to be released before Christmas on the Mac. Can’t wait!
