Before jumping into the case of Rifqa Bary, allow me to mention two outstanding articles that serve as a backdrop to her case. The first article was written by Nidra Poller,an American who moved to France in 1972 and is a journalist, novelist, and translator. Her article is entitled,Europe’s Woes America’s Warning. http://mideastoutpost.com/archives/000541.html. She makes a number of good points, here are a few:

…All of western civilization is under fire. As promised during the campaign,Barack Hussein Obama is making a radical change in American policy. Not of course the glorious change his worshippers promised themselves, but a troubling shift toward dhimmitude….Europeans who do cherish their freedom try to organize, speak out, influence their governments. They see-or saw-America as a refuge,a haven,a beacon of liberty. Many see Israel as a sterling example of resistance against global jihad.Though life looks quite normal on the surface,we are living in a perilous, highly volatile situation in which, normal life is a battlefield.

That is a key point. Will we compromise away our freedoms, our liberties, all in the name of tolerance? Will we (in politically correct fashion)allow Sharia Law,the mistreatment of women by their Muslim husbands and/or fathers? It is already happening in Europe on a large scale. The second article is by Bruce Bawer, written in December of 2006- While Sweden Slept.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, associated with the Economist magazine, has awarded the title of world’s most democratic country to Sweden. For many observers, this is not only wrong-it is staggeringly, outrageously misinformed.

Sweden is after all,a country in which the people are fed by their political, press, and intellectual establishment an unvarying diet of propaganda promoting the socialist welfare state, demonizing Israel, and whitewashing Islam. As for America, the official view was neatly captured in a post-September 11 editorial in the nation’s largest newspaper,Aftonbladet, which assured readers that the terrorists who attacked New York and Washington weren’t Sweden’s enemies but simply hated “U.S.imperialism,”a reasonable position given that “the U.S.is the greatest mass murderer of our time.” Such views, taught in Sweden’s classrooms and enshrined in Sweden’s state-approved textbooks, are reiterated daily by Sweden’s mainstream press organizations, all of which are either government-owned or government-subsidized.

Dissent is powerfully discouraged. In Sweden, whose murder rate is currently twice that of America and where Muslims now constitute over 10% of the population and are disproportionately unemployed and prone to violence, the Swedish press routinely depicts America as crime-ridden. Polls show that the majority of Swedes are deeply disturbed by their country’s dramatic social changes and highly critical of the policies that brought them about.Yet the crime and violence generally go unreported,so only rarely does any of the criticism seep into the press.Though two-thirds of Swedes question whether Islam is compatible with Western society, this issue is simply not open for discussion.

http://www.nysun.com/opinion/while-sweden-slept/44831/

Rifqa Bary (17 yrs.old) has fled her home in Ohio to a Christian community in Florida. She fears for her life, and believes her father has plans to murder her (Islamic “honor killing”).Such killings have occurred in America, and Europe, and are sanctioned by Sharia Law. To hit some high points of the story:

Apostasy is punishable by death in Islam. If the parents are devout there is the possibility they would feel honor bound to kill her.

Her father’s mosque-the Noor Islamic Center is known for its jihadism,Jew,and infidel hatred.

Rifqa has been a Christian for at least two years,if not four.

A Florida judge has placed her in Florida foster care pending another hearing to be held Sept.3.

Thus far the mainstream media has been biased towards the parents and against Rifqa. There is an obvious ignorance of Islam and what could really happen to Rifqa. Even Fox News has done a sorry job of reporting this story. Here are some links that give an in depth look at the story. Pamela Gellar at Atlas Shrugs has been in the forefront of this. Please read the letter that Nidra Poller sent Pamela. What is happening to Rifqa is a common occurrence in France. This is an important case for America, for Christians, and for freedom of religion in this country.

May we bold for Jesus Christ.May we be salt and light in a fallen world.Compromise leads to half truths which are no truth at all,or to silence.Fear and cowardice are not becoming to the sons and daughters of God.If we wish to glorify the Father,we will stand against evil, for His glory and kingdom.

Now when he went to Natzeret, where he had been brought up,on Shabbat he went to the synagogue as usual. He stood up to read, and he was given the scroll of the prophet Yeshayahu.Unrolling the scroll,he found the place where it was written,

The Spirit of Adonai is upon me;therefore he has anointed me to announce Good News to the poor;he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the imprisoned and renewed sight for the blind,to release those who have been crushed,to proclaim a year of the favor of Adonai.(Luke $:16-19)

“Dialogue” with fascists, øur føkken ass (it’s 6pm: have you strangled your inner fascist today?); Stephen Pollard reviews Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom by Bruce Bawer, a Norway-dwelling American critic, in Sunday’s NYTBR:

More pernicious, perhaps, is the refusal of institutions that depend on freedom of speech for their very existence to stand up for that freedom. Bawer analyzes the story of the 12 cartoons of Muhammad published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September 2005, which is emblematic of the “surrender” of his title. When the paper was attacked by radical Muslims for daring to mock Muhammad, solidarity from other newspapers in supposedly free nations across the globe was paltry. The response of political leaders was even worse. Rather than confronting a blatant, indeed self-proclaimed, attempt to ensure that Islam could not be treated like any other subject in a free country — that is, mocked, criticized or satirized — politicians and editors simply cowered in fear of retaliation. Even those newspapers that offered words of support to Jyllands-Posten refused to reprint the cartoons.

Almost the only leader to show any backbone was the Danish prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen. His response to a demand by Muslim leaders for a meeting was to tell them that “it is so self-evidently clear what principles Danish society is based upon that there is nothing to have a meeting about.”

Paul Barrett / Washington Post

Bruce Bawer’s latest book comes wrapped in the American flag or, more precisely, wrapped in a jacket depicting the Statue of Liberty gagged with an American flag. It’s an arresting image meant to convey an alarming message: Muslims on a “cultural jihad” intend to stifle free speech in the United States and destroy our liberty. They may succeed, Bawer warns, because they receive aid and comfort from liberal dupes flying the banner of “multiculturalism.”

Bawer, an accomplished literary critic, has addressed this subject before, in a book published in 2006 called “While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam Is Destroying the West from Within.” There he wrote about the increasing tension between majority populations in cities such as London, Paris and Amsterdam and their often alienated Muslim immigrant neighbors. Bawer stirred controversy by painting Muslims with crude brushstrokes suggesting ubiquitous and intrinsic Islamic extremism.

Much of “Surrender” merely updates that earlier volume. In his new book, Bawer indulges in such unsubstantiated declarations as: “While there are such things as moderate and liberal Christianity, there is no such thing as a moderate or liberal Islam.” And: “To put it briefly and nakedly, the West is on the road to sharia,” or the rule of Islamic religious law.

Forgoing the temptation to dismiss Bawer’s latest work as a polemical retread (because most of it actually deals, again, with events in Europe), one might focus on his depiction of Muslims in America. “Surrender” ’s cover, after all, advertises a book about the United States, and the author expends considerable energy extolling the First Amendment in contrast to less tolerant-sounding words from the Koran. Training his gaze on the United States, Bawer produces a muddled picture. He neglects to take note of the fact that, on average, the American Muslim population is better educated, better off economically and better integrated socially than its Western European counterparts. Not surprisingly, American Muslims have been implicated in far fewer terrorist plots since 9/11 — and no successful ones.

This is not to say that the toxic mixture of religious zealotry and anti-Western ideology that poisons some European Muslim enclaves is altogether absent from the United States. Bawer could have looked at the tiny minority of American Muslims who harbor real hostility to the mainstream: men like the three Muslim brothers from Albania who were sentenced to life in prison in April for conspiring to kill American soldiers at the Fort Dix, N.J., military base or the four men arrested in New York last month in an alleged plot to bomb two synagogues in the Bronx.

Instead, he implies that innocuous Muslim social and spiritual organizations favor religiously inspired violence. One he singles out for condemnation as an extremist “front group” is the Islamic Society of North America. I happen to have interviewed numerous members of ISNA and attended their gatherings. Bawer provides no evidence that he has first-hand experience with the group, but, in any event, his attack seems wildly misleading. ISNA has tens of thousands of members who are led by middle-class immigrant engineers, physicians, academics and entrepreneurs. Its current president is Ingrid Mattson, a moderate-minded scholar born in Canada who years ago converted to Islam. Most ISNA members, it’s fair to say, disagree with most American Jews on relations with Israel. But by and large, these are Muslims seeking a constructive role in American society. They adhere to various strains of Islam: some orthodox, some less so. They are increasingly engaged politically. Many supported George W. Bush in 2000; in 2008, they rallied to Barack Obama.

Bawer veers into self-parody when he asserts that Muslims have cowed skeptics into self-censorship and inaction: “Artists and writers avoid Islamic themes and settings; police officers avoid Muslim neighborhoods.” His own work shows that critics of Islam have no trouble publishing. I counted references in “Surrender” to more than 15 of his allies: prominent columnists, bloggers and authors. As for the notion that the police, FBI and immigration authorities steer clear of Muslim neighborhoods, one need only consider the thousands of Muslims who have been arrested and deported from the United States since 9/11 — some justly, some unjustly — to verify that Bawer has lost his bearings on this topic.

Paul M. Barrett is a journalist in New York and the author, most recently, of “American Islam: The Struggle for the Soul of a Religion.”

“For the Justice of The Sunset Maker, the chief function of art is to preserve what little it can of life. [...] Justice is a poet of a world in which loss is ubiquitous, sorrow inevitable, and adult joy always bittersweet, a world in which the genuinely heroic act, for a literary artist, is not to thrash about uncontrollably, raising a manic and ugly din, but to fashion a body of work whose beauty and poise and gravity in the face of life’s abomination may, one trusts, help it to endure.”

“Justice’s genius for distancing: as much as any sonnet of Donne, it [the poem "The Summer Anniversaries"] represents not an indulgence in personality but an escape from personality’s restrictions; the specifics take on a symbolic weight, and one does not find oneself wondering (as one does with much confessional verse) about the poem’s degree of autobiographical accuracy.”

“Justice distinguishes between writing about himself, which he tries not to do (‘I’ve always felt that it was an author’s privilege to leave himself out if he chose,’ he has said, citing with approval Eliot’s now-unfashionable theory of the impersonality of the poet), and writing about people and places that have been important to him. Indeed, though his family and friends proliferate in The Summer Anniversaries, Justice attempts to restrict himself to the role of the observer and chronicler, and when he is present (or, more accurately, when there is an I in the poem that one tends to identify with the poet), he does his best to objectify his experience, to place mythic elements in the foreground, and to exclude the irrelevantly personal.”
