Previously, I posted about jerudong park. I didn’t mention about the bumper cars as I didn’t see them functioning at that time. I drop by again and found that the bumper cars were still available. My wife took long shutter speed pics of the rides that night. Here is one of the bumper cars.

It interesting to see that in all that random movement, there is an obvious circular pattern. Click on the picture to go to her flickr page. I’m going to post her other pictures as soon as she’s done with them. Check her website for more pics at www.attiev.com

Being super IT Literate :p , a lot of friends and family members often ask me whether exam result were online. whether it was o level, a level, psr or pmb.

It used to be easy. 10 years ago, someone in MOE would either photocopy a print of the list or copy the softcopy on disks(some had viruses because of this ), then people could find it from chat rooms (remember mirc?) a few years ago it started popping up on blogs and websites like bruneiexam.blogspot.com, threecents.wordpress.com, ranoadidas.com and anakbrunei.org.

But recently in 2008, MOE has been more “careful” with releasing the information, this happened since MOE had an MOU with a private company to release the information via paid SMS. There is also an “issue” of Individual Private information (but then that’s only the name and result so there is not much risk). even bloggers at that time were “warned” not to post it as that would go under revealing government secrets. And so like any other good citizen, they obliged. But now even if the results were not revealed through SMS, the information is still not released to the public online. Some people will just say just go to MOE office and check.(hmmm…i wonder if that applies to MOE depts in other districts..)

So to answer the question. I don’t think you can find them online anymore. I have tried in vain. But if you are persistent (more than me), then Good luck in finding them. And please share with me if you will.

It was cool to be able to see the information online wasn’t it?

Didn’t have to travel far to be disappointed. Imagine waiting 15 minutes to 1 hour in the car with all that anticipation.

Didn’t use much fuel to get a single line of information. On average a trip would cost about $2-$10 depending on your distance and your car type.

Didn’t have to pay 3 cents or 3 dollars to get that information. Although $3 would still be cheaper if you have to buy fuel worth $10.

Didn’t have to wait to get back from holidays overseas to look at the result. I wonder how much the SMS would have cost in that situation.

You could check your friends results and tell your friends the good/bad news. People do this looking at the bulletin board anyway. So what is the difference with looking on a board on the internet?

I believe the role of the government is to govern the people, to help them, so that the people in turn will be grateful and contribute to the government’s efforts. To bring the nation forward, and not backwards. I had hoped that MOE would learn from 2008, but apparently it hasn’t. Lets just hope they make the right decisions in 2009. Because in this case as citizens, what else can we do but express our opinions and upsets.

Oh btw, if any MOE officer is reading this. Could you please work on making the website less heavy/lagging. Sure the designs nice looking, but it slows down the whole PC, and loads very slowly on some connections.

The Sultanate of Brunei is a small but thanks to natural gas and petroleum resources very rich count

The Sultanate of Brunei is a small but thanks to natural gas and petroleum resources very rich country located in Southeast Asia. It is surrounded by Malaysia and has two parts physically separated by Malaysia, almost being an enclave. Strategically located on the South China Sea, close to vital sea lanes linking Indian and Pacific Oceans, it has an exclusive economic fishing zone that extends as far as Louisa Reef in the southern Spratly Islands although it makes no public territorial claim to the offshore reefs.

The tiny, but thriving, Islamic Sultanate of Brunei perches on the north western coast of Borneo, completely encircled by the East Malaysian state of Sarawak which divides it in two.

It has a population of 350,000, nearly seventy percent of which is made up of Malays and indigenes from the larger ethnic groups like the Murut and Dusun the rest are Chinese, Indians, smaller indigenous tribes and expats.

The national language of Brunei is Bahasa Malaysia, as spoken in Malaysia. English is also widely spoken.

They enjoy a quality of life that is quite unparalleled in Southeast Asia, with the literacy rate a staggering 93 percent of the population. Education and healthcare are free houses, cars, and even pilgrimages to Mecca are subsidized taxation on personal income is unheard of and the average per capita salary.

The explanation is simple oil, first discovered in 1903 at the site of what is now the town of Seria. That said, the problem remains that Brunei is more expensive than neighbouring Malaysia or even Singapore hotel prices in the capital are at least double those in nearby Kota Kinabalu or Miri.

Most travellers still end up in Brunei either because of an enforced stopover, or as a stepping stone to either Sabah or Sarawak. In the latter case, however, it can work out cheaper to take an internal MAS flight between Miri and Labuan or Kota Kinabalu rather than bussing it through Brunei.

Bruneis climate, like that of neighbouring Sabah and Sarawak, is hot and humid, with average temperatures in the high twenties throughout the year. Lying 440km north of the equator, Brunei has a tropical weather system, so even if you visit outside the wet season usually November to February theres every chance that youll see some rain.

The food in Brunei is very similar to that of Malaysia, though unlike Sabah and Sarawak youll find a good deal of Indian and Bangladeshi dishes here. Alcoholic drink is illegal.

People on both sides of the issue of Global Warming are thoroughly convinced that they are correct.

People on both sides of the issue of Global Warming are thoroughly convinced that they are correct. Both sides use scientific data to back up their claims. Those who stand to make a massive amount of money off of this debate are relished with the controversy, but the following verses are what people of the world need to be prepared for and fear the consequences of ending up on the wrong side :

2 Peter 3:7 (New International Version)
7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

Hebrews 10:26-27 (New International Version)

26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

Hebrews 12:29 (New International Version)
29for our “God is a consuming fire.”

Revelation 16:8-9 (New International Version)

8The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire. 9They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.

Revelation 20:15 (New International Version)
15If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

John 14:6 (New International Version)

6Jesus [Yeshua in Hebrew] answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

2 Peter 3 The Day of the Lord (New International Version)
1Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.[a]

11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.[b]That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul [Shaul in Hebrew] also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

17Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. 18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ [Yeshua HaMashiach in Hebrew]. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

Hebrews 4:13 (New International Version)
13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

First thing I noticed when I walked into Manggis were these “hanging green ball thingies” which lined the walkway.

Isn’t this cute?

Here’s my quirky taste making an appearance again. Wedding favours are always something unique at weddings, but I also try to find a unique way to shoot them.

Kelly, Cyndi and Guan watching as the parents make their entrance into the ballroom first.

Final adjustments to Kelly’s dress before they enter…

Laughs as Guan makes a speech.

First exit… I processed this a little bit more heavily than usual. Just loved the background colours of orange, green and a dash of purple, so I added more pop to them.

Kelly’s friends prepared a very entertaining slideshow for the couple.

Two of the entertainers…

These four really put on a good show for us.

So did these four, it seems. :p (taken by Livie)

I had the pleasure of shooting Kelly’s brother’s wedding earlier this year, and I was really happy to get a call from Kelly asking me to shoot hers as well.

I shot this wedding with Jeff, and a huge thanks also to Livie who helped me with a lot of behind-the-scenes shots.

It was the earliest I ever woke up for a wedding… got up at 4am and I got to the bride’s house at about 5am!

I went for a friend’s brother’s wedding, and saw my ex school mates from CHMS. Just some snapshots, for fun.

18th Dec 09 – Life’s gotten very busy this December, there’s are lot of photos for slight editing, projects to do and plans to be made. Reports for 4th KPMC is not yet done too.

Anyway, I had fun today with the themed photoshoot with Armie, Alina, Diana and the rest of the gang, along with Azam and Azme just now. I met K Pang, a make up artist for the first time and ‘Abdul’, a very nice photographer from a wedding I attended just now. I’m tired, rest first. See you guys around.

If you haven’t heard, b-mobile has subsidized iPhones 3GS’s with a b-mobile subscription

If you haven’t heard, b-mobile has subsidized iPhones 3GS’s with a b-mobile subscription contract of 18 months. This is one of the first subsidized mobile phone price plans I’ve seen in Brunei. The other would be DST’s October promotion offerings that offered a Nokia E75, Nokia E52 and Sony Ericsson C901 with contracts of 6 months. With b-mobile having first introduced their mobile broadband Zoom! which was followed up by DST’s Go!, what I hope to see is more competition among the 2 mobile phone providers which in the end leads to the consumer winning. Recently in Singapore, M1 and StarHub released their iPhone plans which led SingTel to change their previous plans (most notably the increase of free data to 12GB, from a typical measly 500MB/1GB), so as consumers we have to love competition.

I went down to b-mobile to find out more about the iPhone and they mentioned that is it the never locked version and that they are handling the mobile phone service while AV Electronics handles all the other iPhone/Apple/iTunes/Applications related aspects of this deal. While talking to the guy at the bmobile counter he did mention that bmobile was getting the iPhone and DST was going to get the Blackberry. Rumour has it that the Blackberry will be reveal next year but timing is still not confirmed. If it does come to fruition people will be happy (especially the High Commissioner of Canada, who urged Brunei to set up a Blackberry Network).

Initially when asking about the HTC Touch Diamond Pro and Samsung Jet (which was a few weeks back) the guy told me that the details would be released later, but on further inquiry today I was told that both are available but you would have to custom order it and the personnel could not disclose the price plans as marketing was not present. I find that awkward that they are selling a product but have not disclosed the pricing. Anyway the price plans for the subsidized iPhone are as follows.

Note: Contract is for 18 months and the total costs listed are based on the prices for locals that included 1 annual license fee of $25 and a deposit of $50. For foreigners add another $50 to the total cost (as deposits for foreigners is $100 vs $50 for locals).

Note: Beyond the free data, the user is chargeable at 20c/MB up to $40 at which the user can use unlimited data

If you are planning to take b-mobile up on this subsidized iPhone I would recommend subscribing using the Smart $65 Package as it has the lowest up-front payment, the cheapest in the long run and provides the best in terms of perks (especially the unlimited data). With the iPhone you use it as a broadband modem at it would be easy to exceed the 1.5GB/3GB of the 2 lower priced plans and considering that $40 corresponds to 200MB which isn’t much at all. If you take the $65 package, the iPhone can be considered as a Zoom! subscription ($65/month for iPhone vs $60/month for Zoom!) but has so much more benefits.

If you’re looking for a iPhone or even if you’re just looking to get a mobile broadband subscription (Zoom! from b-mobile or Go! from DST) I would recommend the Smart $65 Package bundled with the iPhone of your choice. You get an unlimited broadband connection which can be tethered to your computer wherever you are and the highly coveted iPhone which is currently the best smartphone platform at the moment.

It’s just nine years old, but as you’d expect, this resort on the South China Sea beachfront in the small Malay sultanate ruled by one of the world’s richest men — originally built as a royal palace by the sultan’s kid brother to the tune of more than US$1 billion — has been in the front ranks of Asia’s top hostelries ever since. With 420 rooms, suites, and villas on a lushly landscaped 45-acre (180-hectare) spread, the palatial joint is awash in soaring columns and all manner of sumptuous finishes — marble, teak, silk, gold, you name it.

Plus, everything here is big — from the atrium lobby to the guest rooms (we’ve been in some Manhattan studios smaller than these bathrooms), and the amenities just go on and on: not just a lagoon beachfront, five restaurants, five pools, tennis courts, gym, and 18-hole Jack Nicklaus links, but even a movie theater, live stage theater, and bowling alley (one big drawback for the non-abstemious: no booze, according to Islamic practice). The Empire makes a great base for exploring the mosques and water villages of the sultanate, along with ecotourism in the Borneo rainforests that begin right outside the gates. Rates are more reasonable than you’d imagine, starting at B$250 (US$180/£108) per night, with special promotions sometimes even less. More info: www.TheEmpireHotel.com.

The Guest of Honor was the Minister of Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) – Pehin Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj. Bakar. The attendees consisted of the competition participants, representatives from government ministries and departments, parents and friends of the participants, liveWIRE members and committee.

I was to busy volunteering that I didn’t thought of taking pictures. Hope the pic gallery on livewire-brunei’s website updates soon.

Met him for the first time in Korea 09 during KPMC. He’s a very nice guy, despite his huge size, he’s not harmful at all. LOL. ↑

As mentioned, he came here to visit Brunei 1st Inter-School Wei Qi (Go) Tournament, and due to my hectic schedule, I couldn’t spare much time with them (xinwen and the gang).

So I am now back from Brunei since I was invited by Xinwen to Brunei to be their chief judge in the Brunei 1st Inter-School Weiqi (Go) Tournament 09.

I have always been amazed by Xinwen and his team in promoting Go in Brunei and this inter-school tournament is indeed another big leap forward to encourage more people to play Go. To show my support to him as well as sort of representing the Malaysian weiqi players as well, me and my wife bought the Air Asia flight last Wednesday. It was a trip that almost didn’t happen as we were on the verge of canceling the trip as something unexpected happened but finally we were able to go.

The tournament was casual but well organised. The best part of it is it has a very close feeling to it, everyone is nice to each other and the mood is very jovial and positive. There are more on the tournament on Xinwen’s blog.

On Brunei itself, it is a rather quiet place, peaceful and with really good roads (perhaps so that the Ferrari and Lamborghini can speed through them). The mosques there are nice and there are quite a lot of mosques there. If you would like to have a peace and quiet life where a lot of things are relatively cheap, such as cars, houses, petrol etc., then Brunei will be a good place to live.

However, if you are the Las Vegas sort, you will easily find yourself easily bored. It will be good, however, to go there and stay to detoxify yourself from too much partying though.

In a way, Brunei or more particularly the Bandar Seri Begawan area since we mostly ventured around there, reminds me of Ipoh or Kelantan. Quiet and peaceful where everybody almost knows everybody and every place is just within minutes from one place to another. The typical Bruneian are really nice people, always very polite and obliging.

So perhaps there is another event next year and if there is a chance, I will perhaps visit Xinwen and his family again. And yes, Xinwen’s family is really nice and pampered us well

Here are some pictures (picture credit: the ever excellent Jayden Sia):

Do take some time out out fill in the eGovernment Citizen Survey

What is the purpose?

With the input from the community this survey will help the Prime Minister Office to identify which e-Government services are important to the citizens.

The survey is 28 pages in total and can get pretty time consuming. A compiled version is available here if you want to peruse the questions or even if you want to prepare your answers before answering the real survey.

This is organized by the Prime Minister’s Office, Infocom Federation Brunei in collaboration with E-Government National Centre and BAG Networks. I have to say kudos to the people in charge for taking the initiative for getting the public’s stand and input on something as important is this. I hope other organizations will take an example and try to communicate with the public to understand what is desired. This will help save time and resources of implementing a system only to find out that it is not wanted, thus not used and thus goes to waste.

Participants stand a chance to win prizes such as:

a Lenovo Ideapad S10

a Canon IXUS 860 IS

a one night’s stay at Palm Hotel

If you are inclined to meet the people in charge and ask further questions there are two more roadshows this coming Tuesday (15th December in Seria) and Sunday (20th December in Temburong)

A decade ago, the Jerudong amusement park was the main destination for visitors of all ages. The admission fee was free and featuring lavish rides. But after a few years, the entrance fee was imposed to help to boost the park’s income. This reportedly put off domestic visitors who complained that many of the rides were closed despite the charge, or were dangerous and run-down. Since then, the Park has undergone investment in both rides and facilities.

The Jerudong Park official has announced to the public that the Park will once again open its doors to visitors starting on December 12, 2009. All rides are offered at a discounted fare. The playground offers rides such as carousel, the paddle boats, junior & adult bumper cars, the Orbiter, the Caterpillar and Super Karts.

“We have new garden features and we have revived the waterfall feature near shooting gallery. We have done a lot of reshaping of the landscape with new tree features and rock gardens,” informed Wilhelm A Bayona, JP’s Family Entertainment & Events Coordinator. In the future, there is a possibility of wedding being held in the gardens, he added.

Admission fee:

Free

B$8 family ticket for 5 rides OR B$10 family ticket for 8 rides.

I stumbled on a news article that JP was gonna be free again. Well the Entry was, and I think that was good enough. I went and checked the day it was free on Saturday, 12 December 2009 to see what has changed.

For the uninitiated, JP was completely free when it opened up. From the entrance to all the rides. It wouldn’t be a surprise for every weekend the placed was jam packed. JP was so famous that people from miri, limbang and singapore would make a trip to brunei just to come to JP! But then JP change the rules by charging entrance and the rides. the traffic was less, JP degraded.

It felt so cool to have Jerudong Park entry to be free again. The parking lot was a bit more occupied then usual. Then at the entrance there were people actually going to the counter to purchase the tickets for the rides. I just went in.

Inside, the main field and the playgrounds were filled with children with their families. It was so heart warming to see parents spending time with their children.

I went to “the meeting place” which I never remembered to be the name of big snakes and ladders game. Never noticed the words of Goodness, Love, Faith and Truth on the border of the board. I remembered there was a bear with a rolling dice in its head, but it wasn’t there anymore. I guess have to bring your own dice… is there a dice app for mob? I know there’s one for iphone…

Passed by the place where I used to play rollerblades, felt a strong urge to play again.. Then I went around the carousel to see some kids playing in it. And some people riding those boat cycle things (what is the name of those things?).

On the far end, we spotted a statue of a triceratops with its 2 triceratoplings (yes i’m making that one up).

Played the Gliding Toy thing (seriously, some one please tell me the correct names for this things). I almost got some blisters on my palm playing those. My increased weight only made it worse. but I’d still play it again :p

The shooting range was still there. You’d shoot a target(i think using IR), and the targets moved and may shoot back water.I saw a little kid holding the rifle like a bazooka. That was cute.

It such as a shame that most of the rides were not there anymore, like the Pirate ship, I remembered playing that and waiting in line again to play until I got sick… literally. Well at least there is still the Mini Pirate ship, that tickled my stomache. funny feeling

Some parts of the place was still under renovation and some roadblocks were improperly placed. But I know JP Management and Staff will do their best to improve JP.

It was nice to see most of the playground being filled with kids. I think its a great idea just to have JP entrance for free. People will see the rides and they will pay to play them if they wanted to. I hope that JP will return to its former glory. As it would benefit the businesses surrounding it like the hotels and the restaurants to have more visitors from around Brunei and Beyond.

Good luck JP!
