Our grandson Ben Lackey is one of our favorite humans. He made the studio his home this weekend and we had 48 hours of intense art lessons sprinkled with lots of deep and meaningful conversations, leaf raking, wood gathering, dog training , leftovers and laughter.

A senior at Seton Hall Prep in NJ this year, Ben is pushing himself hard to finish his high school career on a high note while he waits for those big envelopes to arrive with good news from the colleges that he hopes to attend next year.

It was a heartwarming gift to be able to sit across the table from the confident young man who only yesterday we were cradling in our arms. But there was some serious work to do and we had a blast helping each other out.

I recycled my old digital camera to Ben in exchange for some heavy lifting around the log cabin… we got our chores done and Ben got this rainbow on one of his first shots…

The best part is always seeing the grandchildren reflected in Pat’s eyes…

And the apprentice made sure that the young artiste stayed focused…

Except for lunch breaks…

And Finn’s own personal reward…

It’s all about teaching the eye to see and the heart to understand and the hand to follow that lead… this student gets it and is well on his way…

Mas deixando a introdução de lado, o post do dia vem falar do Photoshopedia.com. Esse site de recursos para Photoshop só vem com os de melhor qualidade e é difícil passar mais de uma página sem querer baixar nada.

I have been looking for a good foundation brush for a while. I know MACs brushes are supposed to be the best but i don’t really want to pay £24.50 for one. So i went into Superdrug to look at the GOSH make-up brushes but they didn’t have any foundation brushes left so i was just browsing around looking at make-up and saw a wall with brushes, tweezers, lashes etc. And i came across QVS, they have a really big range of brushes and for this price i thought i would try the foundation brush, because for that price, if i didn’t like it, then it wasnt money down the pan.

The packaging says that it is new, it’s professional quality, has soft nylon bristles and can be used with oil or water based make-up. For foundation application, synthetic is definitely best, natural hair brushes tend to become clogged with liquid make-up and you end up wasting product. A synthetic brush glides smoothly through, distributing product evenly.

I think it’s great! I seem to need less foundation because is spreads it all out evenly across my face and the result is flawless application. Fab value for money!

Have you ever wondered what types of foundation to use to achieve that “baby soft, smooth” finish? As always, the first step in accomplishing this look would be to seek professional skin care routinely, and to keep in mind that professional skin care can be affordable. Besides general skin care, other factors are the tools that you use (i.e. brush, sponges). Knowing what types of foundation is best for your skin type, and the finish you are seeking i.e. matte, natural matte, satin, or dewy. Let’s begin discussing foundations for skin types:

Oily skin: For oily skin, the foundation most recommended is a water-based foundation (meaning water is the main ingredient). This skin type should stay away from oil-based foundation. When researching products be aware that some products that are labeled oil-free simply means free of mineral oil, but may contain some content of oil that binds the properties. (We will discuss ingredients in greater detail in the future). Another recommendation for oily acne prone skin is to use a silicone based primer before application. Silicone helps the foundation to go on smoothly. All skin types can use a silicone base primer. Water-based creams or alcohol-based liquids can be used under the foundation. If medicated gels are applied they need to be allowed to dry before the foundation is used. Liquids, powders, and aerosol foundations are suited for this skin type. For skin with many comedones (blackheads), sheer foundations are best.
Dry skin: Oil-based products are recommended for dry skin. Oil-based and some water based foundations with a moderate degree of oil will give you the best chance of retaining moisture in your skin. The oil will give a semi-matte finish, and will be easier to apply. Cream sticks are suited for this skin type.
Sensitive: Sensitive skin types should use lightweight foundations that are hypoallergenic and non-comedegenic.
Combination: If you have combination skin (like dry skin with oily T-zone) then you need a makeup that has moisturizers in it but is also oil-free and provides shine control for your oily spots. There are many makeup choices for combination skin. This skin type should concentrate on picking products that best suit whichever problem is worse — oiliness or dryness.
Scarred skin: Cake foundations are recommended, as well as a silicon base.
Mature skin: Mature skin with concerns of fine lines & wrinkles should use a firming foundation. Mature skin, as well as dry skin, should refrain from using mineral-based foundations due to their settling into the lines and causing the finish to look blotchy.

Tips: # 1 It is very important to know your skin’s undertone coloring. Are you warm, cool, or neutral? Warm tones are yellow, orange, or red orange. Cool tones are blue, blue green (olive), or blue red (pink). Neutral tones have equal amounts of warm & cool colorings. Some professionals also view the undertones in ranges such as: very light, porcelain or white, ivory, cream, pink florid, sallow, olive, tan, brown and ebony. Foundations should be matched to your natural skin under tone and should appear as if you have nothing on. Keep in mind that the purpose of a foundation is to even out the skin tone, minimize imperfections, and give the skin a smooth, healthy glow. During the course of a year, it is recommended that you use one of two foundations. One shade for summer and another for winter. Skin tones tend to lighten during the winter months and become darker during the summer months.
#2 Before applying foundation be sure to always apply a moisturizer first, then your primer. A primer is not to replace your moisturizer. The reason behind the moisturizer is that if your skin is thirsty for moisture when applying foundation the skin will absorb the foundation thinking it is hydrating; leaving an uneven coverage. For women who want coverage that is the same consistency as a tinted moisturizer, but delivers more coverage, a great way to achieve this is to add a little of your liquid foundation along with your daily moisturizer.
#3 SPF- Sunscreen is important and can’t be stressed enough. The number one cause of aging and damage to the skin is sun exposure! Sun protection is the most important skin care product you can use everyday. The first and most important defense against wrinkles is the daily use of sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher. It can be in your foundation or moisturizer and it will help to prevent new wrinkles from developing and existing ones from getting deeper.
#4 When applying foundation be sure to apply foundation a little below the jawline. Also, if taking photos be sure to touch up the ears.

I was walking through town last week trying to get some pictures of the leaves before they were all gone. I came across this house with the little red tricycle on the porch. I wondered whether it was left there by a child after taking it for a ride or was merely a decoration placed in front of the red door.

I am going to be posting mainly work by Japanese poet Yosano Akiko. I focused on her work a lot as an undergraduate; she is wonderful and fierce. And as Herschel, my mentor, always says: no translator worth his or her salt can work on a piece without considering the larger themes and subtleties present in it. In light of that, I will be mixing in some commentary!

So the idea behind this D-D challenge came after I stumbled upon Johnson Koh’s blog 10Steps.SG and found a tutorial entitled “Making a Beautiful Pair of Fantasy Eyes.” It looked pretty cool and I thought it would give me a good excuse to fool around with photo manipulation in Photoshop, so I suggested the idea to Tatge and started looking for a nice pair of eyes. I used an image a found on Flickr, Tim in sanhazzay’s Mr Gray Eye, as a starting point and started messing around using the tutorial as a general guide. I ended up with the eyes posted below. During all this I learned a lot more about using Blend Modes and Adjustment Layers, however, the real lesson learned here was Brushes, Brushes, Brushes! So much creative potential that I was almost unaware of until now. I ended up download lots and lots of new brushes after finding a list of free Photoshop brushes on Tutorial Blog and now I’m in the midst of making sense of it all… which should keep me busy until I think of a new Design-Dhursday challenge for next time.

A friend once asked me back when I had hair, “How do you know which hair brush is the right on

A friend once asked me back when I had hair, “How do you know which hair brush is the right one for you?” I never really thought about it. Over the years I’ve tried several types of brushes, combs and such and just simply stuck with what felt good on my scalp and left my hair looking and feeling healthy, but not frizzy.

So I thought I would check it out and see for myself which commonly available hairbrushes offer the best protection and the most ease of use.

In order to carry healthy, manageable hair throughout your life, you need to learn and practice the following tips early in life and never forget them. The main goal is to protect and prevent your hair from being damaged.

Brush and comb your hair as infrequently and as gently as possible (Your fingers will do the trick). Do not use a brush on your hair when it is wet and start with a wide-toothed comb first. Be sure not to over-brush dry hair. Never twist, tousle or wring your hair dry in a towel, but instead squeeze it dry gently using your hands.

If your hair maintains a lot of static, it could be due to dry weather, dry indoor air or a fine hair type. However, you can also get static if your brush has plastic bristles or tines. In this instance, switch to a natural bristle brush or mist hair spray on the brush and restyle. Handle your hair as little as possible. Avoid direct sun exposure and don’t over do coloring or perms.

Now choose your brushes carefully.

As I have found over my years of brush use, all hairbrushes are not the created the same. Some are best for styling; others are ideal for creating smoothness or curvy waves. A lot of brushes are available for specific purposes. Once you find out what your needs are for your hair length, texture and style then you are on track. Check to see which type of brush your stylist uses. If you like it, buy it. This selection could change if you decide a short cut is more your style.

Here are some examples:

The Paddle Brush

This brush is flat, wide and is best for brushing out long hair and creating straight, smooth styles. It can also give you a mini scalp massage. Because of its shape and size this brush should not be used to brush layers. It will never add volume, which is what layers are for.

The Cushion Style Brush

This brush is for medium-length hair that is naturally smooth or straight. The flat bock reinforces the hair’s sleekness. These brushes will make the most of box shaped bob’s, the graduated cut and a disconnected outline. It’s called the bi-level cut.

Sculpting Brushes

These brushes are great for adding volume to short, textured styles that need some movement. They are great for backcombing. The best hairstyles for these brushes include short cuts, round layers and texture outlines like razor perimeters and choppy ends.

Thermal Round Brushes

These brushes can be found in all sizes, including small, medium, large and jumbo-sized barrels. When used with the heat of a blow dryer, the smaller brushes act like rollers and create curl. The larger ones smooth out locks and add body. This is a favorite among professionals. The metal core heats up, shaping the hair from the inside out. Some good thermal brushes are Beautee Sense and Olivia Garden.

Thermal Flat Brush

This brush acts like a flat iron, smoothing and straitening the hair when used with the heat of a blow dryer, thus leaving it with not bend or lift. Whichever brush you use, hold the hair taut with the brush to create tension. This stretches the hair so it can form the new shape. It also adds shine and polish to your look.

In closing, be sure to look for brushes that have ball tips that are molded as part of the bristle. Ball tips that are glued or otherwise attached can pull hair and damage it. Good brushes are an investment; if they are good quality and well cared for, they should last for years and your hair will be much healthier because of the extra attention you have given to selecting the proper brushes.
