Unul din primele personaje de desene animate pe care le-am vazut si mi-au placut a fost Popeye Marinarul.Probabil ca cei mai multi dintre voi.El este un personaj care a fost prezent la inceput in benzile desenate,animatii,filme,reclame,carti,radio,televiziune,jocuri,afise…peste tot unde poate aparea un personaj.Este o legenda si merita atentia .

Popeye Marinarul, celebrul erou de desen animat, iubit de toti copiii care mai devreme sau mai tarziu l-au descoperit cu ajutorul ecranului televizorului, a fost la inceput un erou de benzi desenate. A fost creat de Elzie Crisler Segar, aparand pentru prima data in banda desenata Thimble Theatre pe 17 ianuarie 1929. Nici macar creatorul sau nu banuia ca acela era doar primul pas al unei povesti parca fara sfarsit. Dar Segar avea sa isi dovedeasca intuitia in crearea de personaje care vor face legenda. Popeye era un marinar care vorbea intr-un fel aparte, avea antebrate foarte musculoase si pufaia in permanenta dintr-o pipa grosolana. Prin intermediul benzilor desenate Popeye calatorea prin toata lumea si trecea prin aventuri care ii tineau cu sufletul la gura pe cititori.

Nici in desenele animate intriga povestii nu este mult diferita, dar de aceasta data Popeye are si o iubita, longilina Olive Oyl, pe care personajul negativ, uriasul

Bluto (mai tarziu Brutus) incearca mereu sa o cucereasca. Si de aici luptele dintre cei doi, pe care Popeye le castiga intotdeauna cu ajutorul spanacului, care ii da o forta supraomeneasca. Acest artificiu, care apare in desenele animate si foarte rar in benzile desenate, a salvat industria de conserve de spanac din Cristal City, Texas, pe atunci aproape de desfiintare. Locuitorii au fost atat de recunoscatori incat mai tarziu au construit o statuie a eroului in centrul orasului.

Chiar daca Popeye este cel putin fizic la antipodul eroului clasic, foarte multi iubitori de benzi desenate si de desene l-au comparat cu un alt erou american, din aceeasi perioada, care avea sa faca inconjurul lumii : Superman. Ca si acesta Popeye are reguli morale la care nu renunta niciodata si lupta impotriva raului, pe care il invinge de fiecare data. Popeye s-a intalnit pentru prima data cu publicul pe 17 ianuarie 1929 ca un personaj secundar intr-o banda desenata

care incepuse in 1919 ca o cronica a aventurilor lui Olive Oyl, ale fratelui ei Castor Oyl si ale prietenului ei, Ham Gravy. Cum publicul l-a indragit din start pe marinar, acesta a capatat un rol tot mai important, pentru ca in final sa o cucereasca si pe Olive, chiar daca aceasta avea tot timpul sa fie ba rautacioasa, ba dragastoasa cu acesta. Banda desenata realizata de Segar a avut o intreaga istorie, formandu-se treptat o impresionanta galerie de personaje diverse, multe care nu aveau sa mai apara si in desenele animate.

Chiar si Bluto, viitorul rival de moarte al lui Popeye, avea sa apara o singura data. Scenariul era mult mai complex decat cel al viitoarelor desene animate.

Popeye The Sailor – primul episod

Dupa moartea lui Segar, in 1938, mai multi artisti au continuat serialul de benzi desenate, cel mai important fiind Bud Sagendorf, care intre 1958-1994 a continuat aventurile marinarului cu pipa. Fostul asistent al lui Segar a incercat sa pastreze aspectul clasic al desenului, desi a adus modificari sensibile, creatiile sale fiind usor de recunoscut. Serialu continua si astazi, in paralel fiind editate nenumarate albume cu aventurile mai noi si mai vechi, Popeye avand de multe decenii si propria sa revista.

Dar lumea tiparului parea sa fie prea mica pentru Popeye, asa ca urmatorul pas, foarte firesc de altfel, avea sa fie in universul animatiei. Benzile desenate au

devenit in 1933 un desen animat, produs de Fleischer Studios (condus de fratii Max si Dave Fleischer) pentru Paramount Pictures. Popeye insusi si-a facut debutul pe marele ecran ca personaj intr-un desen cu Betty Boop din 1933, intitulat chiar “Popeye Marinarul”. Tot atunci a fost lansat si celebrul cantec “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man“, scris special pentru acest desen.

Vocea personajului a fost la inceput William “Billy” Costello, care avea sa fie inlocuit ulterior din 1935 de Jack Mercer, din cauza problemelor de comportament.

Mai multe actrite si-au oferit vocea pentru Olive Oyl, dar cel mai mare succes l-a avut Mae Questel, care fusese vocea si pentru celebrul personaj Betty Boop si care avea sa joace acest rol pana in 1938. Nici Bluto nu a fost neglijat, vocea sa fiind pe rand actori ca Gus Wickie, William Pennell, Jackson Beck si Pinto Colvig. Datorita desenelor animante Popeye a devenit mai cunoscut ca oricand, depasindu-l la jumatatea anilor 30 chiar si pe celebrul Mickey Mouse, prin intriga simpla si mai ales farmecul vocilor si personajelor. Vocile erau inregistrate in acea perioada dupa ce filmul era terminat, asa ca actorii trebuiau adesea sa improvizeze si sa gaseasca noi linii de dialog, care sa se sincronizeze cu ce se intampla pe ecran.

Fleischer Studios au produs 108 desene cu Popeye, 105 fiind in alb-negru. Celelalte trei erau episoade speciale, in care Popeye se intalnea cu Sindbad, cei 40 de hoti din povestea lui Ali Baba sau cu Aladdin. Cand fratii Fleischer si-au mutat studiourile in Florida, in 1938, pentru a profita de scutirile fiscale ale statului, nu intentionau deloc sa renunte la Popeye, asa ca au continuat productia. Episoadele realizate continua povestea, dar schimbarile sunt vizibile : animatia este mai luminoasa si mai putin detaliata, incercand sa imite stilul Disney. In 1941, cand razboiul devenea o realitate tangibila si pentru America, Popeye a fost inscris din nou in Marina SUA, primind in locul costumului clasic o uniforma specifica.

Fleischer Studious s-au inchis in ianuarie 1942, cand Max si Dave au fost nevoiti sa demisioneze din cadrul

companiei. Paramount a cumparat firma si i-a schimbat numele in Famous Studios, numindu-i in conducere pe Seymour Knietel si Isadore Sparber. Productia desenelor animate cu Popeye a continuat. In aceasta perioada Popeye aparea in spiritul propagandei celui de al doilea razboi mondial, luptandu-se cu soldati nazisti si japonezi, pe care, cum era de asteptat, ii invingea. La sfarsitul lui 1943 seria Popeye a inceput sa fie produsa in Tehnicolor, o schimbare benefica pentru public. Famous/Paramount a continuat productia seriei pana in 1957, realizand in total 125 de episoade, pentru a vinde drepturile de autor catre AAP (Associated Artists Productions). Acesta companie a fost ulterior cumparata de United Artists, care ulterior a fuzionat cu Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, cumparata la randul ei de Turner Entertainment in 1986. Turner a vandut ulterior drepturile de productie pentru Popeye catre MGM/UA in 1988. O buna parte din episoadele realizate in alb-negru au fost refacute in culori in anii 80, pentru a profita de enormul interes inca prezent pentru aventurile haiosului marinar. Turner a fuzionat in 1997 cu Time Warner in 1997, iar in prezent compania Warner Bros. detine drepturile de productie pentru Popeye..in America . In 1960  King Features Syndicate a comandat o noua serie de desene Popeye, dar de aceasta data pentru televiziune, ceea ce s-a si facut, 220 de episoade fiind realizate in doar doi ani.Popeye Marinarul a devenit proprietate publica de la 1 ianuarie 2009, odata cu expirarea drepturilor de autor asupra legendarului

personaj de desene animate.Acest lucru este valabil doar pentru tarile Uniunii Europene, unde perioada de valabilitate a unei marci inregistrate se intinde pe 70 de ani. In SUA, drepturile asupra marcii Popeye vor fi in continuare valabile, pana in 2024. In Europa insa, din 2009, oricine va putea sa produca postere, felicitari si tricouri si chiar sa creeze benzi desenate cu Popeye, fara sa aiba nevoie de autorizatie sau sa plateasca pentru folosirea marcii (Popeye este unul dintre primele personaje animate faimoase din secolul 20 ale carui drepturi de autor expira. Betty Boop si Mickey Mouse ii vor urma).

Dar Popeye nu isi arata deloc varsta, fiind nu doar personaj de desen animat, dar si de jocuri video, reviste de benzi desenate si chiar filme de lung metraj si jucarii diverse.

Spanacul, o leguma care poate nu este preferata de prea multi si mai ales de copii, a fost folosit in desenele animate ca sursa de putere a lui Popeye. Acesta, de cate ori avea nevoie de mai multa forta pentru a-si infrange adversarii sau pentru a o salva pe Olive din mainile lui Bluto, scotea din buzunar conserva deja celebra, o deschidea si manca spanacul, pentru a deveni apoi un super-erou.

Introducerea spanacului in poveste s-a datorat unei simple greseli de tipar dintr-un studiu, in care spanacul era prezentat ca avand de 10 ori mai mult fier decat in realitate. Inspirati si amuzati de idee, creatorii lui Popeye i-au oferit acestuia aceasta arma secreta. Datorita popularitatii eroului si vanzarile de conserve de spanac au crescut enorm, pentru prima data parintii avand un argument solid pentru a-si convinge copii. Iar aceasta crestere a vanzarilor a salvat industria de conserve din Crystal City, Texas (care si-a onorat eroul cu o statuie). O a doua statuie a fost construita in orasul natal al lui Segar, creatorul lui Popeye, Chester, Illinois. Abia in 1954, in episodul “Mitologia greaca”, este povestita originea consumului de spanac in istoria familiei lui Popeye. Inaintasul roman al lui Popeye, Hercules, obisnuia sa miroasa usturoi pentru a-si creste puterea inaintea unei lupte. Cand raul Brutus scoate mirosul de usturoi cu ajutorul cloroformului (o nepotrivire frapanta) Hercules este infrant si aruncat pe un camp cu spanac. Dupa ce mananca frunzele verzi, Hercules devine de zece ori mai puternic si isi infrange fara mari greutati adversarul.

Before we brought Julianna home I was very concerned about how Brutus, my 4 year old French Bulldog, would respond to the new addition to our family.

It would be an understatement to say that my dog is a little on the spoiled side.  Juan and I got Brutus the weekend after we got married and he’s been our pseudo-child.  It was very important that we did whatever we could to ease his transition to the updated version of our family that included Julianna.

It’s been so cute to watch him with the baby.  When we first got home from the hospital Brutus didn’t quite know what was going on, but he definitely knew that something new and strange was in the house.  I was sitting on the couch with the baby when Juan brought Brutus into the house for the first time.  The Bru quietly & cautiously circled the couch & the kitchen.  We picked him up & let him smell the baby and I believe that like Juan & I, it was love at first sight.

When Julianna cries he gets up to make sure that Juan & I know that she’s upset.  If we would let him,  he lick her all day long.  This apparently is how dogs comfort & show affection to their puppies.  I like the idea that Brutus thinks of Julianna as his pup.

A 7-year-old learning how to swim is nothing new unless it’s an 800-pound grizzly bear.

Brutus the bear slapped the water a few times then gingerly backed into the East Helena pool while onlookers gawked late last week.

Casey Anderson was teaching Brutus, who was born in captivity, how to swim and catch fish for a National Geographic special called “Expedition Kodiak,” scheduled to run next year.

“I’ve had him since he was the size of a cupcake,” Anderson said of Brutus, who served as best man, or bear, in Anderson’s wedding.

Anderson grew up in the area and learned how to swim in the same pool where Brutus was getting his lesson.

Brutus, though, drew more of a crowd, and an electrified fence was put up around the pool to keep Brutus from wandering through town.

At the pool, Anderson used a fish on the end of a pole to help Brutus develop his fish-catching skills. Next up, Anderson plans to return with Brutus to the Montana Grizzly Encounter in Bozeman, where Brutus will learn to catch live fish.

Twelve-year-old Mauri Erickson walked over from her house to see the swimming lesson.

“I think it’s really cool that there’s a bear swimming in my favorite pool,” said Erickson. “He’s a lot bigger than I thought he would be.”

Another title for this post could have been Chocolate Garden, however…I’m a sucker for profanity. I love all the browns together mixed in with the Garden & Gauze top from Pididdle. The combination goes  nicely even without accessorizing. Minimalism is the new “it”.

B.O., her sister E., E.’s daughter A., and I started the day with a light breakfast at Starbucks (I ordered a cinnamon dulce latte). Then the four of us went to the Bioparque Estrella, boarded an open truck, and went on a simulated safari. E. bought about five large paper cups of food to give to the animals, and we each had a cup. There were only four of us, so somebody, probably E., was holding two cups.

The camels were surprisingly, shall we say, forward.

In Your Face, and Up Close & Personal

Not expecting the animals to stick their necks within the truck, B.O. had been keeping the food between her legs. One of the camels (we think it was “Brutus”, a two-humped Bactrian camel) reached in and grabbed the food right out from between B.O.’s legs, giving her a HUGE fright! Afterwards, B.O. was muttering “Brutus, stupidus, idiutus…”

A man sitting just to our right had a similar fright. He was feeding a camel, and suddenly a second camel shoved its head in the way, trying to get some food, too. Everybody became wary of the camels, who were tall enough to reach into the truck and grab food!

Then the four of us went to a “magic town” close to Monterrey, the Villa de Santiago (here’s a description in English).

There, we went to a restaurant named Los Escamoles. Here is a picture of the wash basin in the men’s room. I was informed that the ceramic used for this sink probably comes from Puebla.

At this restaurant, I tried a distinctly Mexican/Aztec food called escamoles.

This has been described variously as either the eggs or the larvae of ants. Sounds a little scary, doesn’t it? But surely you’ve eaten caviar, perhaps on sushi? Think of this as an insect caviar. I was expecting escamoles to be salty, like caviar. But it wasn’t that salty at all. In texture, it was kind of like a pasta al dente; and in flavor it had a mild, nutty taste. (This reminds me: I read somewhere that wichetty grubs are eaten as an ethnic food in Australia, and that they have a nutty taste.)

Another dish that I tried was a pepper drenched in a nut sauce, studded with pomegranate arils. This was chiles en nogada, one of the most famous dishes in México, and the recipe is from the same place that produces the nice ceramics, Puebla. The colors (red, white, and green) celebrate the colors of the Mexican flag; and the dish is available only seasonally, in August and in September.

Later in the evening, I attended a wine-tasting event at Buké Restaurant. The theme for the evening was wines from Piedmont, Italy. Three red wines were paired with food. Here’s the announcement for the wine-tasting:

Luigi works for a wine importer named Enotria; I gather that they actually specialize in Italian wine.

Afterwards, B.O. took me to an area high in the mountains named Chipinque, which is close to a famous mountain formation known as the “M”. There, we took some night-time photos of Monterrey.

The release of mass murderer by Scotland’s Authorities.

Pan Am Flight 103 was Pan American World Airways’ third daily scheduled transatlantic flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. On Wednesday 21 December 1988, the Boeing 747-121 named Clipper Maid of the Seas was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members. Eleven people in Lockerbie,  Scotland, were killed when large airplane sections fell down over the town.  As a result, history has named the event as the Lockerbie Bombing.

In 2001, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, a Libyan, was found guilty and convicted of involvement in the murder  caused by the bombing and sentenced to life imprisonment. On 20 August 2009, the Scottish Government released him on “compassionate grounds” to return to Libya, he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer and told he had a life expectancy of less than 3 months. Does he really have cancer, It is irrelevant.
The first stab came from the UK. How:

As we can tell by what The WSJ wrote : “Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, meanwhile, owns a $16 million mansion in London’s northern suburbs and maintains close links with Britain’s leading business figures. Earlier this summer he was a guest at the villa owned by the Rothschild banking family on the Greek island of Corfu. Another guest was Lord Peter Mandelson, Britain’s business secretary and a close ally of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.”
Mr. Mandelson is no other than Peter Benjamin Mandelson, Baron Mandelson, PC (Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council is a body of advisors to the British Sovereign. ) who had to resign twice under Prime Minister Tony Blair under the shadows of impropriety:
First resignation: In December 1998, it was revealed Mandelson had bought a home in Notting Hill in 1996 with the assistance of an interest-free loan of £373,000 from Geoffrey Robinson, a millionaire Labour MP who was also in the Government, but was subject to an inquiry into his business dealings by Mandelson’s department. Although Mandelson alleged he had deliberately not taken part in any decisions relating to Robinson, he knew he should have declared the loan as an interest, and he resigned on 23 December 1998
Second resignation: In January 2001, it was revealed Mandelson had phoned Home Office minister Mike O’Brien on behalf of Srichand Hinduja, an Indian businessman who was seeking British citizenship, and whose family firm was to become the main sponsor of the “Faith Zone” in the Millennium Dome. At the time, Hinduja and his brothers were under investigation by the Indian government for alleged involvement in the Bofors scandal. On 24 January 2001, Mandelson resigned from the Government for a second time insisting he had done nothing wrong.
He made several speeches outlining his strong support for the European Union. He was close to two Shadow Cabinet members, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, each regarded as potential future leaders
Mandelson became a close ally and trusted adviser to Blair. He was Labour’s election Campaign Director for the 1997 general election, which Labour won by a landslide.
Some early background, He was educated at Hendon County Grammar School. at St Catherine’s College read Philosophy, Politics and Economics and in the late 1970s became director of the British Youth Council thus became a delegate in 1978 to the Soviet-organized World Festival of Youth and Students in Havana, Cuba and several future Labour cabinet colleagues. Elected to Lambeth Borough Council in September 1979 and retired in 1982 not pleased with the course of Labour politics.

Other evidence suggesting the British government, rather than its weaker Scottish partner, was the driving force behind Megrahi’s release has emerged in the form of a letter Ivor Lewis, a junior minister at the British Foreign Office, wrote to Mr. MacAskill on Aug. 3. In that letter, parts of which have been leaked to the British press, Mr. Lewis tells Mr. MacAskill that there is no legal reason not to accede to Libya’s request to transfer Megrahi into its custody under the terms of an agreement reached between Mr. Blair and Gadhafi senior in 2004 to strengthen U.K.-Libyan diplomatic ties. This agreement was negotiated in the wake of the historic nuclear deal.

Libya is the biggest provider of crude oil to Italy by far and its sovereign wealth fund may yet prop up some large Italian companies, but Silvio Berlusconi is discovering – like Gordon Brown of the UK – that to deal with Muammar Gadhafi can be a double-edged sword.
When he flies to Tripoli on Sunday, the Italian prime minister will be the first western head of government to greet the Libyan leader since the homecoming of the convicted Lockerbie bomber which has sparked a furore in the US and the UK. Oil and business ties are expected to top the agenda when Mr Berlusconi joins Colonel Gadhafi to celebrate the accord they forged a year ago under which Italy said it would pay $5bn (€3.5bn, £3bn) during 25 years as reparations for its colonial rule, which lasted from 1911 to 1943.
In return, Libya made a deal about boat people leaving its shores and is to give Italian companies priority in infrastructure projects, such as Finmeccanica’s aerospace(see stock below) venture with a Libyan fund and its award last month of a €541m railway signals contract. Libya’s sovereign wealth funds seek stakes in Italian companies, including a possible 10 per cent holding in Eni, the energy company controlled by the Italian government.
Before he flies to Libya this evening, Mr Berlusconi has a related but potentially more important meeting closer to home, with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s secretary of state.

Finmeccanica, the Italian leading aerospace, defence and security company and the Libyan Investment Authority (“LIA”), the Libyan sovereign wealth fund, and Libya Africa Investment Portfolio (“LAP”), an Investment Fund owned by LIA, share the view that Libya and the Middle East and Africa countries will offer, in the near future, significant investment opportunities in a broad range of industrial sectors in which Finmeccanica is present at a global level and they intend to leverage on their joint capabilities to access new markets working with local customers and partners.

In this context, Finmeccanica, LIA and LAP have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of a strategic cooperation in Libya and other countries in the Middle East and Africa regions. Under this MoU investment opportunities will be pursued in the aerospace, electronics, transportation and energy sectors for civil applications.
